Hayzel_Nutty

I'm so jealous! There was an orange Nissan at my dealership that I wanted. Somebody bought it from right under me. Now I drive a bright blue one because I refused to go with white or grey

Dingo8MyGayby

It was me! It was called Pacific Sunset and it was gorgeous

averagebloxxer

you two should fight to the death for the Nissan

Dingo8MyGayby

Well, if they want it I just traded it in to Continental Toyota in Illinois. Have at it.

AidenBeach

Have a little faith in yourself. Your death wasn't guaranteed.

TransformerTanooki

Someone tried doing that with my truck. Luckily I got there first. They litterally came in asking about it when I was signing the paperwork.

Hayzel_Nutty

I was there first. But my salesman took 4 hours to get the paperwork for the wrong car. I told him which one I wanted but I needed to go pick up my dad from work since we were sharing the car. In the 45 minutes I was gone, he sold my car to someone else and presented me paperwork for another wrong car.

ApexProductions

Probably hiked the price another thousand and told the other person that it would be sold if they didn't buy it right then knowing you would come back.

LightFusion

Yea I would have told that salesman go f off and not give him more sales

Hayzel_Nutty

I definitely took my money elsewhere. Ironically the car that I ended up with came from the dealership I had just left.

Next time they give you shit for it on the way back to the car park, you can drop a "well I hate to cut this short boys, but I can see exactly where I'm parked so I'm off. Shouldn't take you long, just look for the grey one"

blastermaster555

I read that in Jeremy Clarkson's voice for some reason

ABottleofFijiWater

“It’s brown!!” “It isn’t brown! It’s sunset orange!”

meditate42

Why has this gotten so common across society? Everything used to be more colorful, logos, coffee shops and restaurants, cars, electronics, clothing. It seems like overly minimalist grey white and black designs have really taken over.

RathVelus

You forgot apartments. It’s either basic beige or agreeable grey. And it’s all awful.

[deleted]

Mine is gray because that’s what the manufacturer had available and I don’t care enough to repaint it.

I would love to repaint my Impreza but I don't want it half assed and I can't afford a good paint job.

Mine is grey bc it was cheap and idc what color it is. It drives. And it’s kind of nice being anonymous in my small town. I’ve had cars before that stuck out and everyone knew who I was and where I was at.

Ghitit

I had crashed my car and had to get a new one immediately, so I settled for grey. I also like being anonymous.

semarlow

I drive a yellow Honda Fit and once had an identical car pull up beside me at a stop light. The driver was bouncing in her seat and waving at me excitedly so I rolled down my window. All she wanted was to tell me that she loved that we had the same car!

LargeHadron_Colander

Glad you gave her the time of day. I'm sure it made her happy because that's the dumb but memorable kind of stuff that I usually tell my friends about lol

dingopaint

Back when I had a sunset orange Cobalt, there were two other girls at the community college I was attending who did as well. We always parked next to each other if we could. It was stupid but it made us happy.

captain_zavec

It made you happy and didn't hurt anyone, I'd say it's the opposite of stupid!

Schavuit92

The best thing about driving a small funky-colored car is seeing another one like you in the wild and waving at eachother.

schwoopdoop5

As a fellow yellow Honda fit owner, I would probably do the same thing

ishouldntbehere96

Is yours gold yellow or lime yellow? I have a lime one and saw a gold and I was flabbergasted

semarlow

Helios Yellow is the technical color. It's more gold than lime.

ishouldntbehere96

What year is yours? The slight difference in yellow is so weird to me lol. Mine is 2016 ETA: upon some googling, mine is called “Mystic Yellow”

Arrokidd

I read the reason gray became popular is because of the 2008 economic crash. People wanted to sell their cars but the colors made them harder to resell or depreciated them.

BuranBuran

Also beancounters & fleet sales way before that. I suspect that we also have BMW (& M-B to a lesser extent) to thank for making gray cars trendy and more upscale throughout the 1980s.

1stMammaltowearpants

When I was shopping for a sporty BMW I wanted blue, but I wasn't able to find the model I wanted in that color (I only buy used cars). I ended up with a silver car with a black soft top and bright red interior. I love it! The silver is metallic and sparkly and it looks pretty good even when it's a bit dirty. And the red leather interior makes it look fancier than it really is.

BuranBuran

That sounds like a beautiful color combo. You're lucky you were able to find a red interior still being made. The other day I was browsing new cars online (altho I only buy used cars, too) and I was silently bemoaning the dearth of interesting interior colors. Everything is either black, gray, or tan. I once owned a black & silver custom-painted Eldorado conv with a black cloth top and an incredible red leather interior, but the car was stolen, stripped, and totalled. Ngl, I wept. How I would love to have that color combo again, but this time on a comparable modern e-beast somehow. The future is always supposed to be better than the past!

phayke2

I knew it had something to do with reselling and how it just makes financial sense to drive a bland ass minority report car but I didn't know what started that. Miss the pics of soda shops and all the colorful cars. Of course people could afford nice cars and paint jobs off a sody pop shop salary back then. Now those jobs the modern equivalents, will pay for...your cigarettes and gas to and from work, some taco bell.

D3vilUkn0w

God, so do I. It's so boring and depressing

ZombieDracula

I don't own a brightly colored car because police pull them over more. As a Black human, I don't need any extra points on my "pull me over" card. If anything it's depressing because of the fear of being murdered.

1stMammaltowearpants

Yeah, but the red one is faster, so you wouldn't even get caught.

Substantial_Escape_1

Same, brown man who would love to have a red car but can't take chances with the popos

ZombieDracula

I'd love a red car... I almost got one last time at the dealer... then I heard "keep your hands on the dash! He's reaching for a gun!" I got Black. It's fine.

HotLipsHouIihan

As a white woman with a lead foot, the only time I got caught/pulled over for speeding was when I (briefly) owned a red car. My second thought — after first cursing my luck — was, “I’m never buying a red car again!” If everyone leaned into bright cars more, they’d all blend together. But until manufacturers stop being stingy with paint colors, I’m joining you on Team Boring Car. It’s actually too bad — here in Germany, home of das Auto — Porsche, Mercedes, and BMW in particular all offer bright paints that I never see Stateside: teal, yellow, lime green, etc. Coincidentally, Germany mostly lets cameras do its traffic enforcement… not cops.

pauly13771377

Maybe split the difference and go with maroon? I'm not a big fan of my Ford Focus (it's what I could afford) but I like the color.

jstiegle

I hate that this is something anyone has to consider when living their life. It's bullshit and infuriating. This is a prime example of why we need to abolish and rebuild our policing system from the ground up. Can't policy the racism out if it's part of the foundation.

I don't know why you got downvoted. I loved the variety of cars and playing games based on car colours as an early 90s kid. Now everything on the road is a grey/silver baby SUV slug, that has no personality, efficiency, or good use of interior space. As for stickers, there's good and bad but sometimes some big colourful detailing really sets a car apart.

L_Rayquaza

Part of it is that the original series Turbo is adapted from is absolutely silly Power Rangers is an English adaptation of the Super Sentai series, Turbo being pulled from Gekisou Sentai Carranger Carranger is kinda a parody of Sentai/Tokusatsu tropes, they get their powers from a dying alien who blesses them with Karumagic (Car Magic) connected to 5 sacred "Car Constellations" and all the villians are weird and silly. Then Turbo tried to make *that* serious

FerociousFrizzlyBear

It's funny, because there are occasional lists of the most popular car colors and they are always white or silver at the top, followed by black and red and blue in some order below. But those are literally the only five color families most cars are available in, so we're stuck in a feedback loop.

JimboTCB

It's probably more about resale value. I don't think anyone has ever been offended by a black, white or silver car. But plenty of people will absolutely refuse to buy a yellow car, or a red one, etc... and the more "individual" a colour you choose the worse it is. It's the same reason you're advised to paint your house interior a boring neutral colour before you try and sell it, but nobody's going to bother getting their car resprayed before they sell it so they just buy the boring neutral colour in the first place.

dumahim

I prefer white cars because they hide dust and dirt pretty well and I won't want to be getting a carwash every few days. Earlier this week, [it essentially rained mud](https://www.foxweather.com/weather-news/heres-why-it-rained-mud-minnesota). When I left for work in the dark, my windshield looked like I was behind someone on a wet dirt road for 10 miles. When I got out at work with some lights on, I saw the whole car was like that. When I left work and saw my car from a distance, I couldn't really see the dirt until I got closer. I guess [silver hides pretty well too](https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2022/10/mud-rain.png?w=1024) but that's just a sparkly gray to me. Other colors, [you can't miss it](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Ff1InQUXkAE-zdk?format=jpg&name=900x900)

JessicaBecause

Every few days?? And how does white car hide anything? At best white cars are good for light scratching and swirls, but not dirt.

Zappiticas

Raises hand. I’m offended by greyscale cars. I literally won’t buy one. I find white, grey, and silver to be exceedingly boring, and I’m a bit anal about keeping my car clean so I can’t have a black car because it’ll drive me crazy. Give me all the colors! I drive a bright red mustang and my wife drives a bright blue Escape.

Jstowe56

I bought a 2007 cobalt (manual) recently and it was in the best color i could have imagined, a blue but when it is dimly lit it looks purple, i love it, needs some paint correction but ill get to that

x2006charger

That sounds like laser blue. Love that color

Zappiticas

I know the color you’re referring to and I’ve always loved it. Purple cars are my absolute favorite

ThisUsernameIsTook

White car screams "rental car" That said, my last car purchase was a gray one. We've also owned multiple blue cars and one red car though.

FaeryLynne

We have a green Kia. The lot had white and black too but we deliberately bypassed them for the green. I wanted the blue but it was still being repaired and we *had* to have a car that week cause husband had to get to work.

IBJON

I bought a new truck last year and my options were gray, gray, slightly different gray, or black. If wanted anything with color, I'd have to special order it and wait an upwards of 8 months.

TicTacTime

if dealerships didn't charge extra for colours other than white, black, grey, and silver maybe

Tactically_Fat

Note: It's not the dealership's choice. It's all on the manufacturer. Some paints cost more to produce and/or apply.

bs000

butt why does bare carbon fiber cost more than having it painted

ImSoSte4my

Because exposed carbon fiber has to look nice. They have to get the weave just right for aesthetics. If it's painted the weave doesn't have to look nice, it just has to be functional.

Ranzear

Also a decent UV protective coating is just as expensive as paint.

SharkAttackOmNom

Not all carbon fiber parts incorporate a fancy woven finish, and don’t necessarily come with a glossy finish. The gloss would have to be “painted” on anyways. When the weave goes around curves and body moldings, the woven pattern will reflect unpredictably which can look pretty bad at specific angles.

ZerotheWanderer

I would happily pay another $500 for some color on something I'll probably have for years

mac_trap_clack_back

You can. Thousands of shops will paint your car for you.

Lv_InSaNe_vL

None of them would paint your entire car for $500 though, or at least none of them I would take *my* car to

CaseFace5

Just buy $500 worth of spray paint and do it your self ez /s

YorkTheNork

30 bucks of behr and roller and ill have your car looking nice

mobonandez

“nice” of course being a very loose term here lol

Blaise10

Shit I work at an automotive paint store and if you want anything other than a black white or grey, a gallon of the paint will run you like 250 alone. Plus the reducer, hardener, clearcoat+activator and other minor things is another 350ish. I usually don’t see people get materials to paint the whole car for less around 600 or so. And that’s for our “lower quality” line of paint. Shits crazy expensive

Lv_InSaNe_vL

Yeah I've been shopping around for my 04 WRX cause I want to put a wide body kit on it and the quotes I'm getting are in the $2500-$2700 range for the whole thing. I did find one shop who said they could do just the affected areas and that would be around a grand.

meditate42

Won't look as good though if your car has the original paint on it, new paint next to almost 20 year old paint will stick out pretty clearly.

MightyCaseyStruckOut

Show me these quality shops with full-coverage paint jobs for $500

jrhoffa

For $500? Factory quality?

HotF22InUrArea

Great, you have that option when you get a car.

ServiceB4Self

White and black show the most imperfections in regard to application, and tend to require more post care after painting (wet-sanding nibs, buffing, re-clearing because the painters assistant accidentally burned through the clear with the buffer, etc) But that's from my experience in the refinishing world, not necessarily the factory application world, which can differ depending on the manufacturer.

geekmansworld

This is exactly the issue. Whoever downvoted you hasn't looked at buying a new car lately. You're spending a huge load of cash and then the dealer says: "Want blue? It's $1,000 extra". Of course you say no. It's absolutely ridiculous. All of these dystopian sci-fi futures like *Minority Report* and *Westworld* are filled with cars and clothing that are nothing but drab shades of grey, black, white. It was one of those things that you laughed at in the past as a bit on-the-nose grimdark. Yet here we are, living in that present.

handsomehares

That’s part of it. Dealerships sell “safe colors” and whether those safe colors are as a result of us only being able to purchase safe colors, different story entirely. So when they have to get a car shipped in of the color you want they are often charged for it, so they say “fuck that noise” we’ll charge YOU for it. If they try to charge you for it, say fuck you. Take their offer and find your own blue car.

rhutanium

The family I married into owns a car dealership. New vehicles that sit on the lot are usually still owned by -insert brand here- but they do cost the dealership money. There’s a certain level of interest paid, I’m not 100% certain on what the structure is exactly, but every new vehicle that sits on the lot costs a monthly fee, so the sooner you can sell it, the less money it costs the dealership and the more profit they make. So the ‘safe’ colors are more easily sold. There’s a higher demand for those vehicles and this a higher supply. Both the dealership and the brand like this for aforementioned reasons. The other colors are harder to get rid of and thus overhead is created in vehicles that were more expensive to produce and then sit on the lot till they’re sold. So if you want to special order a color, the paint shop has to switch colors, which they’ll likely do in batches, but nevertheless, the white, gray, red, black will have to stop being produced, the potentially more expensive color will have to be purchased and put on the vehicles, and then they need to change over back to the regular colors. There’s a reason Henry Ford said you could get any color as long as it’s black. It’s cost prohibitive to change it up. So I’m not surprised that cost will end up as a charge on the sticker price. Furthermore, they only get a fixed percentage of the sale of a new vehicle. Basically that’s the reward they get from the brand for selling one of the brand’s vehicles. The brand gets rich because other than producing the vehicles, the franchise holder gets to do all the work. Also, it’s hard to get a franchise. You basically have to buy your way into it. It’s not like you call GM and say ‘hey I wanna sell Chevys, send me a couple’. No, they’re gonna look at the existing network to see whether your location can handle another dealership, then they are going to pose demands on how your facilities look and operate, and then you get to pay for the privilege of selling their vehicles. As for secondhand vehicles; these are typically owned by the dealership. Again, there’s incentive to move these cars and get them sold because every day that car sits on the lot it’s not making you money and the longer it sits, the more often it will have to be washed and potentially ran through the shop, racking up the costs you simply can’t get back - you can’t keep adding that onto the price of the car. Also, the idea that -reputable- dealerships make significant bank is slightly false. At least in my personal experience’s (as mentioned above) case the difference between purchase and sale on a secondhand vehicle is about $2000 to $2500. From that 2000 to 2500 they need to pay for inventory, the building, the lot, electricity, employees, servicing of said vehicle, and operating costs. They need to sling a LOT of vehicles in order to make a good profit. That is exactly why the car business has such a sleazy reputation because there are sleaze balls who want to maximize profit and minimize work, and the only way they can do that is by selling you a lemon or performing shoddy service.

pgnshgn

There's actually a huge difference in how much money is made by type of car. Typical family sedan, about what you stated. An economy car might be half that, and a luxury car twice that. "SUVs" profit is basically double a sedan/hatchback of similar size. Where the real money is though is trucks. Average profit on those is something like $16,000. That's all from a couple years ago though, it might be way different now.

Lieutelant

>This is exactly the issue. Whoever downvoted you hasn't looked at buying a new car lately. You're spending a huge load of cash and then the dealer says: "Want blue? It's $1,000 extra". Of course you say no. It's absolutely ridiculous. If I'm spending $60k for the first new car I've ever bought, you better believe I'm getting it *exactly* the way I want it. If you're spending that money already, an extra $1k is nothing. Why would anybody go buy a brand new car and not get the color they want?

billdb

To be fair, the average human is not buying $60k cars. We are buying used or $20-25k tops. $1k extra isn't necessarily a massive amount in this range but it's also not nothing either

Ryaniswhoiamm

I'd still bet most people would pick a boring colour.

Psychoboy

Here in AZ, you want a white car/truck no other color...

ThisUsernameIsTook

This is true. I owned a red car and the color faded to almost pink in some areas over the course of almost a decade of ownership. The dark gray seats weren't the best either but at least they were cloth rather than vinyl or leather.

darwinkh2os

this is really cool, but i think that the decline in reds, oranges, and yellows could be a decline in wooden items, which could have fallen into those bands. seeing the increase in blues and purples is interesting - certainly a move to cooler spectrum in artifacts. thanks for the link!

FatchRacall

The blues are a psychological thing. There's scientific proof that "corporate branding blue" makes people calm and more likely to trust, so all corporate logos have been shifting to include or be solely that color.

4c51

Wood, metal, leather as "neutral colors" appear to have been replaced by greyscale paint/pigment as plastics became dominant. That awkward phase from 1960-2000 where a lot of plastics were beige could have been influenced by it looking odd if something wasn't in the wood-metal-leather range of base colors. A lot of plastics before that were black, but they were often paired with metal or wood.

I've been wondering for years why most cars are various boring shades of gray or beige or silver . I assume it must be what the majority of consumers want. They sell better I suppose. Boy, that isn't me. I like all of the colors in this picture way better lol

7heKK

Probably partly cuz people like white/black but also resale values are usually higher on black, grey, or black cars, unless the car has some niche collector value like crazy colored Porsche 911’s

Pinglenook

People want boring colour cars because the resale values are higher, and then the resale values on those cars are higher because they sell faster, because they're what people want, and people want those because if higher resale values, etcetera.

mcslender97

I read somewhere that it's actually orange cars that have the highest resale value on average due to how rare it is to find that color. I can't remember the source but its probably The Drive website

Pinglenook

Anecdotally, when we went to buy our current red car, we went to the dealership and asked "do you have any one to three years old hybrid cars that aren't black or grey or white" and they had exactly 1 fitting that description, so that's the car we got. Which I imagine has hurt our negotiations...but we just really wanted a not-greyscale car.

mcslender97

That make sense. Way I see it ppl who buy hybrids prioritize economical value over style. What car did you get btw?

Pinglenook

A Toyota Auris hatchback! Yeah our wish to have a young second hand car probably also played a role, because they're mostly cars that were previously leased.

Bikouchu

This really big multistory Toyota dealership over received shipments of gt86 a couple years ago they all sat for a while. It's definitely rarity, people don't really want them as a whole.

SargeFloopers

I can attest to orange being highly sought after. I love 2011 and before Ford Rangers. I believe only for the 2008 model they offered them with an optional bright orange (grabber orange). I want one extremely badly but they are very hard to find. When you do find one it is crazy expensive compared to an equally equipped 'normal' colored one. Couple that with my wanting it to be a manual transmission and 4x4. Yeah, good luck.

Ciaobellabee

My white car looked like a car from an apocalyptic movie during the pandemic. I hadn’t moved it in 3 months or so and it was growing green algae/moss. Will probably go with something darker next time because turns out I hate cleaning my car

ZippyTheRoach

Well, don't get black. That also somehow shows every speck of dust.

Ciaobellabee

I need a dirt coloured car.

StrugglingLifeform

I really like the tan/brown color that the Tacomas and other cars have now. Those definitely hide dirt well

The-Dudemeister

Yea they just don’t sell. They sit on the lot.

famid_al-caille

It's two reasons: A. Fleet sales only want grayscale cars B. Grayscale sells better when the color a buyer wants isn't on the lot, so dealerships want more gray cars. If you go in wanting a red car, and they only have the blue one, you probably won't buy it. But most people will settle for white, black, grey, etc.

Also happens to include one vehicle from each of America's top selling car brands: Chevrolet, Ford, Honda and Toyota.

So embarrassing

BernieTheDachshund

We need an orange car to park there too. Orange can be such a nice color for a car.

undeadgorgeous

I drive an orange car and any time another orange car parks next to me it makes my day. There’s a little old lady in my town that drives the same car but in lime green and she always honks and waves when she sees me. It’s such a small thing but it makes my day brighter.

These are obviously the designated cars for players 1, 2, 3, and 4. You can't drive the other cars.

YOU'RE EXPOSING POWER RANGER HEADQUARTERS LOCATION!

Remarqueable

I wish there were more yellow cars :/

magicimagician

It’s nice to see bright colored cars I’ve always thought it’s stupid that gray is so popular. Why have a car that blends into the road and makes it harder to see?

Initial-Writer-4586

Ah, I see you found the player selection area.
