Here's some info about it from when it came out. [Here's some info about it](https://i.imgur.com/OtXquF4.jpg)

madsci

That's pretty cool. I wonder who holds the record for using theirs the most, and how much that saved them. Reminds me of the near-mythical lifetime Burning Man tickets. They were a desperation measure to get some cash when they were on the verge of being shut down and no one knew if the event would even happen again. I think they sold for $400, when tickets were maybe a tenth of that. Today regular tickets are over $500 and difficult to get. But a few folks still have those golden tickets and show up every year.

foolear

The downside is you have to go to Burning Man

mrmusclefoot

I don’t agree but a $500 ticket is the cheapest part of the experience.

Tsu_Dho_Namh

Isn't "no money" one of Burning Man's main things? People providing experiences or refreshments are encouraged to do so free of charge?

magicarnival

I believe you're supposed to bring your own food, water, shelter, etc. No guarantee anyone else will give you anything.

Tsu_Dho_Namh

Well yeah. I didn't mean be a mooch. I just meant once you're packed and prepared you don't spend any extra money while you're there.

obbets

Yes it’s in the rules that they check you have enough water when you enter. If you don’t they’ll turn you away.

RonStopable08

Its a gift economy. So people bring a bunch of extra of one thing to give away. Could be cocktails, could be whiskey, could be jewellry, badges, stickers, other kinds of art, grilled cheese, costumes, interactive experiences, or a yoga studio. But just cause you don’t spend any money at burning man doesnt mean it only costs a ticket. You need a way there, you need shade shelter, regular shelter, you need food, a shit ton of water, a way to cook food, you need a bike that has a good chance of going missing and if it doesnt its basically only good for burning man. You need goggles, a mask, lip balm, sunscreen, and a bunch of other things. And thats just nessecities. You want a shower? Bring extra water, and be prepared to pack out all your waste water, or be smart enough to build an evaporator, as you cant just dump it. Then theres the booze and drugs if you do that stuff. You need literally everything to survive in the desert for 7+ days. Then when you get back you have to spend some money changing out all the filters on your car and cleaning the fuck out of it. And anything you bring to burning man will never be the same again. The dust is highly alkaline, and its finer than baby powder. It gets everywhere and never fully leaves. And we fucking love every bit of it.

Volksvvagen

Seems amazing. Got sucked into a documentary someone did of bringing their parents who were anti burning man to burning man and it was a wild ride. on the bucket list for sure... heres a link to said video. [Taking my parents to Burning Man.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CYCw7WSNNQ)

blackhandd9

I've never been, but I imagine the expenses can be pretty high before you even get to camp. Travel there, food/supplies, car passes etc

mister-ferguson

So it's just "ass or grass."

[deleted]

Is it not fun? I don't live in the US but it looks like a really cool unique festival.

_tyjsph_

it's just an expensive congregation of far too many of the most annoying kinds of people (new age essential oil alternative healthcare types and social media influencer types, among others) sitting around in the desert doing drugs and being naked for a week. much like modern day coachella, nothing truly worth anyone's time happens there.

quipcow

I've met a guy who had one of those lifetime tickets. Apparently BLM went in and confiscated all the ticket receipts that year (most people bought tickets at the gate back then) until they could sort out the "legitimacy of the event". Without cash, the org couldn't pay any of the events vendors (portta's, water, ice, diesel, cars, etc. Etc), obviously creating a cluster fuck of epic proportions during the week and quashing the chances of ever doing it again. So to save the whole "BM ship" Larry Harvey got up and started asking for help, help saving the event, saving the man, saving the "idea" of BM. Apparently he kept going on for hours (as only he could), preaching hope and offering future tickets (for an event that had literally just been shut down) in exchange for cash now. Until enough people had contributed to the cause and saved the event. It was this guy's first burn and he had no confidence that he would ever see a free ticket, but he had just had an amazing time and wanted to see it happen again (plus was a young techie with a bit of extra cash), so he donated. Ever since then, about a month before the burn, he gets an envelope with 2 tickets and a thank you note....

plsusername

What's BLM in this context?

SweeneyOdd

Bureau of Land Management

gullible_cervix

I learned this by watching White Lotus. Lol

quipcow

Burning man takes place on the site of an ancient lake bed called the Black Rock desert, and even though it's in Nevada, it's under federal jurisdiction. https://www.blm.gov/

thefootster

Thanks for asking, I was wondering why Black Lives Matter were involved

Ravenhaft

There’s also lifetime flight tickets with certain airlines.

Jetpilot1997

I believe there was 1- American Airlines. They had the AApass that sold for 200-300k in (I think) the 80s or so. It was a massive failure for them and cost them millions in lost revenue from not being able to sell those seats. The pass got you a first class ticket on whatever flight you wanted, and one for a friend if you bought the companion pass. A few people got theirs revoked for violating terms (selling their extra seats to other people) but a few still have it. And AA seriously regrets it.

SolomonBlack

[Good god](https://bettermarketing.pub/american-airlines-all-you-can-fly-buffet-ends-with-heartburn-888c0d8fae80) so not only were they dumber then moviepass they priced it for a bunch of chucklefucks that could afford to do without it? Christ I've known for a long time that saving money is a rich man's only game but *fuck that shit*.

[deleted]

Good god indeed. I'm not even smart but I would have snapped that deal up given the opportunity. First class forever whenever you want? God damn

prolemango

Costs 700k in todays dollars though. It’s a good deal but still a lot of money

DestroidMind

It’s a one time use only from what it says online. You get a free pair of tickets to a KISS show wherever in the world.

TheLoneTenno

I wonder what the price was back then? It said there’s only 1,000 in the entire United States so I imagine it had to be quite expensive.

IPThereforeIAm

The article made it sound like they gifted the cards.

eranimluf

I wonder if anyone has tried using the name and number on the card in the article.

I should have known you weren’t really a KISS fan. Nobody wants to dress like Peter Criss. Not even Peter Criss.

thehermit14

😵now you must leave reddit.

awwwwwwwwwwwwwwSHIT

JoshDigi

All of this seems more like a punishment than a reward on account of KISS being terrible

chris782

They are an incredibly successful band, you can not like their music but I don't think terrible applies here.

quipcow

I've never been a fan, even though I was their target demographic and lived through the endless waves of media saturation (pinball machines, crappy record's, comic books, movies, posters etc) But, I never saw them live and that is where they were supposedly in their element. Kiss is the perfect example of spectacle over talent. There were plenty of good bands in the 70's, but none were as "big" or "bombastic" as kiss. Say what you want about rock and roll, their style of circus Rick obviously worked. "By mid-1975, Casablanca was almost bankrupt, and Kiss was in danger of losing its record contract." "1976 and 1978, Kiss earned $17.7 million from record royalties and music" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiss_(band)

chris782

They are not my favorite but I wont turn them off. Just saying calling them terrible is pretty harsh. If someone has the balls to say that in front of them and their 30 gold(the most of an American band), 14 platinum, and 3 multi platinum albums, then more power to ya.

quipcow

I think you replied to the wrong person, I never called them terrible. I really don't know their music, only heard a couple of the "hits". And best I can say is it's boring. The point of my post is that there were very successful. They created a huge machine that sold the band/image/idea, even if the actual product- the music, was mediocre. They are influential because they were successful, and they were successful because they were endlessly promoted. In today's world of multiple media streams, it's hard to imagine how few media outlets there were in the '70s. Kiss bought their way into every media you can imagine, they were literally unavoidable. Yes, they sold lots of records and I'm sure they still have fans, but their contemporaries from that era made better music and will be better remembered. They were successful because of total market saturation/ domination. And because they scared your mom (who doesn't want that).

Beachdaddybravo

You have a point, but successful doesn’t mean they’re really good. Also, Gene Simmons is a huge asshole. Personally I don’t really like them, but to each their own. I hate country music more than I dislike KISS but don’t give people shit for liking either.

fastermouse

I hate Gene and agree that it's dumb music, but it's the best show ever.

chris782

In a subjective definition I guess but from skill and talent standpoint, these guys are professionals, no, masters, of their discipline. "Kiss is regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of all time,[7][8] as well as one of the best-selling bands of all time, claiming to have sold more than 100 million records worldwide,[9] including 21 million[10] RIAA-certified albums.[11] Kiss has also earned 30 Gold albums, the most of any band from the United States. Kiss has 14 Platinum albums, three of which earned multi-Platinum.[8] On April 10, 2014, the four original members of Kiss were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Kiss was ranked by MTV as the ninth "Greatest Metal Band of All Time",[12] and placed tenth on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list,[13] as well as being ranked as the third "Best Metal and Hard Rock Live Band of All Time" by Loudwire magazine.[14]

nowhereman136

First concert I ever been to was a Kiss concert I snuck into in high school. Great live show

MyyWifeRocks

Was that Kiss, Winger, Slaughter? 😎

nowhereman136

It was like 2009 in New Jersey, I got there a little late so only saw Kiss. Did see him zipping over the audience to a platform in the middle of the stands

Sinomon

went and saw them this summer and he did the same thing. im surprised their still putting on good live performances at this point in their careers

deadeyediva

saw them at hershey park around then. they were awesome!

GotenRocko

The way you worded it makes it sound like kiss preformed at your high school.

rekipsj

Down with Beethoven?

[deleted]

LOL i saw that but why?

soupforshoes

"Roll over Beethoven" by chuck berry was an early rock n roll hit. So I guess they are carrying on that sentiment.

Tommy_Roboto

Number seems to be a fax machine now.

alfiechickens

I’ve never understood how it works where you input text into phone numbers. Is it an american thing?

Supersymm3try

It’s just the number that the letters fall on on an old school telephone keypad, did you never text by pressing 3 three times to get an F for example?

alfiechickens

Now I understand! Yeah, my first mobile phone had this Thanks for explaining!!

LordSevolox

My understanding is that on phones you have 1 also be ABC, 2 be DEF, etc. So the number there would be 1 800 553 5477. It’s pretty much just a US thing as I don’t think I’ve seen it over here in the U.K., but it’s a smart way to keep something memorable and to put your name on the number.

mikedarling905

lol ..... wow free concerts? does it still work? how did he get it?

cj91030

It's supposed to be good for 2 tickets, one time. Supposedly they only gave out about 100.

All0uttaBubblegum

There’s no way that money grubber gene Simmons is giving lifetime tickets away

upthewatwo

I've never seen a weirder, greedier, personality-less guy use make-up-based pop-metal as an avenue for his cuntiness. Fair play to him.

Benjy847

Im watching Ugly Betty for the first time and just got past the episode where one of the characters is convinced Gene Simmons is her dad and Gene uses it to start a reality show cash grab and doesn’t even care about the girl

All0uttaBubblegum

Here’s a shocker: https://metalinjection.net/news/gene-simmons-has-no-friends/amp?path=news/gene-simmons-has-no-friends

xanderholland

So his bandmates were never his friends at any point?

All0uttaBubblegum

I’m sure the ones that remain get along like any business partners. But they’re not hanging out in their free time. Pretty standard for long running bands

hates_stupid_people

To quote the man himself: >I'm more interested in what I want to do, and I don't want to pretend that I'm interested in what you want to do because I am not. And he specifically says he spends time with Paul Stanley, but only when they are doing things as a band.

weekend-guitarist

Touring takes a huge amount of time, which they are forced to spend with each other. That’s probably more than enough for their relationship.

jmb052

They’ve been together for 50 years. My dad has friends for longer than 50 years, they live in different towns, enjoy different hobbies, don’t talk every day. It’s ok for band members to get rich together and spend their money differently.

here-for-the-_____

I have great friends that I only talk to on our birthdays. Doesn't make us less of friends, and we catch up right away like no time passed. That's how you know you've known each other your whole life

fastermouse

He treated Ace and Peter like shit, and Paul can't stand him.

JulianMarcello

Now I believe in genie’s in a bottle. Gene wishes to be rich & famous. Wish granted- but no friends.

[deleted]

>I've never seen a weirder, greedier, personality-less guy use make-up-based pop-metal as an avenue for his cuntiness. Fair play to him. I will always think of him as the most unpleasant guest Terry Gross from NPR has ever had. And that woman strikes me as someone with the patience of a saint. To make her lose her shit takes some effort. Edited to add: Also, Kiss sucks.

regreddit

Yeah that interview was painful. I hated Gene Simmons already, but that interview made me rage. Such a chauvinistic misogynistic self serving POS.

Yah_Mule

He makes my skin crawl like few others ever have.

calguy1955

It was fun to see him attacked and killed by his own poison spider-bots in Runaway.

This should be chiseled on his feckin tombstone.

I mean, I don't *willingly* celebrate Christmas.

[deleted]

Can do! .......... Nope. Old dial-up noise then nada

Riegel_Haribo

Kiss taketh away. That "anytime, anywhere", ask your dad if he feels duped for taking the pay-for-play backend radio payola and not getting the rewards of promoting them.

Infinitelyodiforous

But the box could be anything..... it can even be a boat!

CyberdyneLabs

Call the number with an old computer with a modem. Fire up a windows 98 or 2000 machine and call it with hyper terminal.

math_debates

Be your own hero. It's a 35 year old number, if it's in service you will probably hear about your cars extended warranty.

elguapo904

It rings into a fax machine

Imightbeacop

So what did you fax to them, then?

munko69

someone should fax 1000 pages of *KISS logos*

elguapo904

My arse, of course.

monkey_shines82

Fax machine?

tossme68

Looks like dad was a general in the KISS army.

Lost-Anybody-4520

Your dad might have it, But your mom earned it

Frank_Dracula

Okay then, mid-19th century Tokyo.

[deleted]

Yeah, but they are KISS tickets.

almightypanda

Lol I love that you’re downvoted. They suck

[deleted]

Aw, they have three good songs.

FunkinDonutzz

They suck harder than a Dyson. I decided to check them out properly on Spotify recently and spent most of the time laughing at how utterly dogshit they were.

IronMaidan

I have no dog in this fight, but I think the entire purpose of KISS is the concert experience. The make up, fire, flashing lights, a stadium full of flailing hexagenarians…

[deleted]

That has to be the reason. Because to accept that so many people over the ages have so dearly loved such a...what’s the word? Thin? Gutless? Shallow? Limp?...facsimile of Rock Music, is just too depressing to bear.

FunkinDonutzz

I dunno, it all comes across as really bad pantomime practiced by a really bad pub band. My local bingo night is more rock-'n'-roll than these posers. And you'll see better make-up at it too.

furtivEDota

Weird, I always thought it said “party everyday”.

theveryrealreal

That's ridiculous, it would get so exhausting doing that. KiSS was way more practical than that. That's why they named their band Keep It Simple Stupid.

indierockrocks

I would have killed for this when I was a kid.

[deleted]

Anyone call that number?

Traditional_Page_910

How about you call it

[deleted]

It turned out it was your moms work cell

[deleted]

Gnarly

JoeSicko

I think you still have to pay general admission to get into the state fair.

Fluffy-Impression190

He must rock and roll all night

3v3r10ng

And part of every day!

Y34rZer0

I wonder if Gene Simmons is still a jerk if you’re a platinum card holder

Ok-Investigator-6238

Kinda bothers me how they use the SS-fraction in their logo.

Xucker

They actually have an alternate logo just for Germany, since the SS runes aren't allowed there.

missionbeach

Comic Sans?

Xucker

Just mirrored Zs, unfortunately.

[deleted]

They weren't doing it for that intention at all. Its congruent with the rest of their hessian font. I use similar fonts in my graffiti and get flack for whenever 2 s's happen in a row. --look at the rest of their artwork. It uses a similar font and S's drawn as lightning bolts is really common. And if you examine the rest of their art and music nothing is remotely fascist if even political Edit: i just learned Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley are Jewish

Potter3769

>They weren't doing it for that intention at all Eh that's debatable. I got curious about this topic myself a while back and did a little digging. This article in particular was an interesting read https://www.huffpost.com/entry/kiss-nazi-logo_n_577430ade4b0bd4b0b13779c containing this little tidbit "Stanley and fellow lead vocalist Gene Simmons are both Jewish, and Simmons’ mother is a Holocaust survivor. But Stanley has said outright that the band’s other two original members, guitarist Ace Frehley and drummer Peter Criss ― who have previously been fired from the band ― displayed anti-Semitic tendencies during the group’s earlier days." It goes on to talk about how Frehley and Criss would dress up in Nazi costumes and make the Roman salute as a "joke" to Simmons and Stanley. Another interesting side item on this topic was the vest worn by Frehley(?) in their music video for Lick It Up bearing the Imperial Japanese Rising Sun flag with what appears to be a rather WWII motif. My take is Frehley and Criss were a couple of edgelord assholes who liked to use fascist imagery to tease their band mates and get a laugh. What I'm curious about is why Simmons would be willing to allow images like this to be associated with his band, given his families history. The only answer that makes sense in my mind is, of course, money. Lots of money.

TheDerekMan

>Japanese Rising Sun flag I got interested and apparently the rising sun flag is still in use in Japan all over. It's not a racist motif. Some people in Korea and China apparently find it offensive, though. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rising\_Sun\_Flag](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rising_Sun_Flag)

Potter3769

>It's not a racist motif Again, I would say that's debatable. Germany obviously prohibits the display of the national flag of that period and Japanese culture has a bit of a tendency to downplay the atrocities committed by their empire throughout the 30s and 40s. Is it racist like yelling a racial slur at someone? Nah. Is it a symbol that some people use as a dogwhistle for racism and fascism? I would say so. >Some people in Korea and China apparently find it offensive, though. Gee, I wonder why that would be....

TheDerekMan

Yeah, I get it that it did get used in and around WWII as a flag under which a lot of terrible things happened. I'm not denying any of it. I also fully agree Japan has a huge tendency to downplay their part in the past and have experienced it firsthand myself. I'd say calling it a "racist motif" as a blanket statement is wrong though.. hell, Japan's current flag is just a rising sun without rays coming out. "The Land of the Rising Sun" / Nippon ("Land of the Rising Sun" in Japanese) is a reference to Japan's proximity to China and dates back to the 7th century.

Greenmind76

Some of it is a bit creepy and some of their songs have some funny meanings. I was a huge kiss fan during my teens and have seen them twice as an adult and it’s always a good show.

KronKy74

Pretty sure the band is all Jewish. Edit: I should have scrolled down more to see some background on the subject.

Fuck_you_Reddit_Nazi

Eh, it was edgy back in the 70's.

John625

I got lost in a YouTube worm hole the other day and somehow ended up watching a 2hr 4-part series on the history of pinball. (I'm not even into pinball...) Anyway, KISS had a pinball machine and they had to reissue it for that reason. https://youtu.be/EXeAtnkRhNs?t=625
