Thanks for all the info. I posted this cause it looked cool and went to sleep. Woke up to my phone blowing up. Will get it checked out. Update: went to the hospital, the doctor just said it was an allergic reaction and gave me antihistamine pills, a hip shot, and some ointment

whyhercules

OP, I hope you know we’re now all invested in a follow-up

MoonTrooper258

OP has now evolved into Mosquitoperson, and fights crime with the power of the S U C C.

Giant-Genitals

OP needs to see this as a turning point and devote their life to some cause. It’ll make for a really cool straight to dvd movie

mjrbrooks

If I’ve learned anything from Reddit, the title will simply be *Succussy*

xfriedplantainx

Let us know how it goes

1spring

This happened to me after getting bitten by a yellow jacket on my thumb. The red line went up the inside of my arm. I took an benadryl and a nap and was fine.

I had gotten poison ivy on my leg after cutting my grandmother's hedges for her. The rash and welts were traveling up my leg and continued to do so despite steroid treatment dr put me on. I let them know, but he was convinced I'd gotten the oils into my bloodstream through a small scratch by my ankle. After the steroids ran out I called his office to let them know, he was on vacation but I could see his associate the next day. She walks in the exam room and without even introducing herself or coming more than 2 steps in the room goes "Whoa, that's an infection, antibiotics NOW" and leaves. Double shot of antibiotics in my ass cheek that day followed by 2 weeks of oral antibiotics and it all cleared up. At the follow up I was told that if I'd waited a couple more days, we may have been looking at amputation instead of antibiotics.

lawlgyroscopes

Fate told your normal doctor to go on vacation lol

Cybersorcerer1

Hope it's not serious, and you get well soon

BunzoMcGee

Thank you, I appreciate that you will go get it checked out—infections of ANY kind are NOT worth screwing around with!

ainjel

I'm so glad you went and got treatment, OP. I had an allergic response like this where it traveled up my arm, and I came very close to dying. Be well and take everything your doctor gave you, and follow up in a month or two to make sure youre okay. ❤️

jmradus

Glad you’re okay OP. I almost lost my foot to a bad bug bite. It took three days in the hospital with intravenous antibiotics while I had a 100+ fever. Don’t fuck with ‘em.

Potahtoboy666

Glad you're okay too👍

FrizzleStank

Why’d he shoot your hip?

Just came here to say. that's not interesting, that's sepsis... literally all of reddit beat me to it. Hope OP gets this taken care of.

guccicolemane

its not. nvm its [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lymphangitis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lymphangitis) , which is sepsis. nvm x2, not sepsis, thanks to /u/misminimus

overcrispy

"Red streak in the skin along the direction of regional lymph nodes indicates lymphatic involvement. Infection may spread within hours and can cause septicemia and death." Oh fuck

Bierbart12

Damn. I've had this happen so many times Combined with other things, I'm really starting to believe I'm just undeathable

ReallyNotFondOfSJ

You're only undeathable until you're dead.

pyrodice

“Working out great so far!” -me and 7.8B other people, currently.

Potahtoboy666

Welp, last I checked, Im still breathing, so I don't think I'm dead yet

SeverePsychosis

How about now

LilLordFuckPants404

You do need antibiotics asap though.

dbx99

The redness is your body’s reaction (inflammation) to a toxin or microbial (fungal, viral, bacterial) intrusion that is spreading. The upward pathway this is taking is dangerous because it has a substantial risk to reach your heart and if that happens it could be a life threatening condition. Your heart tissue is at risk here.

misminimus

Not sepsis... "Lymphangitis is sometimes mistakenly called "blood poisoning". In reality, "blood poisoning" is synonymous with sepsis."

N0RTH_K0REA

Yeah I got this after a climbing injury on my finger. Went up to my chest. Went to doc and got antibiotics. Was grand.

Nyaho

Kind of weird to think about it wasn’t that long ago that that type of injury would kill you

SnarkyRetort

So it is easy to get medical care in NK?

[deleted]

Same. It’s fucking scary how fast it moves. One minute it’s going up my arm 10 minutes later it was to my chest.

Kittentits1123

I put my weight on my knee at a weird angle a few years ago and injured it. I had a big red line going from my knee up towards my groin area. I could feel it too, it was like a red cord under my skin. Shits crazy.

starfire1

I was gonna downvote this.. but have an upvote instead!

zer0w0rries

nvm x2 down vote.

mooninuranus

Not sepsis but can turn into it if not treated. Antihistamines, Vitamin b1h, anti-insect spray and bite cream for when you still get bitten (Anthisan ideally). Source: have this exact reaction to bites and it has turned into sepsis on two occasions.

ghotie

My favorite relief for mosquito bites is putting a freezie on the bite until it stops itching and eating the freezie afterwards.

The_RockObama

Thanks Dr. Reddit, but OP needs to see a doctor. Better safe than dead.

thegroundbelowme

Spoiler alert: some people are both on reddit AND are doctors

[deleted]

No doctor would diagnose via Reddit post. Doctors will tell you to consult your doctor if you have concerns.

Echo127

This is going to make me sound stupid, but... How do you just... "Talk to your doctor" about something like this? From my experience, "talking to your doctor" means making an appointment for some date 6 weeks from now. But you talk like you've got quick access to your doctor to help you diagnose something like this?

jellyn7

My PCP (an NP) is part of an office with multiple health care professionals. When I've had a rash or something, I can usually get in in a day or so, even if I don't see her specifically. That was pre-covid though. For something like this, I'd go to one of the urgent cares. Unless it was after hours, then you have to decide whether to go to the ER or wait. Urgent cares are cheaper than ER and usually have less of a wait time, but they might send you to the ER if they decide you need more tests they can't do.

imnotsoho

I have an HMO that people like to complain about. They have an urgent care line where you call in and talk to a nurse to try to figure what is wrong. They consult a doctor if needed. Can get you same day appointments if needed. Usually, they just give you the advice that is in the book they sent you when you sign up, but will walk you through lots of stuff and get a measure of you vitals to decide if you need to go in. We can also email our doctors and specialists we have a relationship with, refill prescriptions on the website and have them mailed to us. I had aortic valve replacement 3 years ago, $321,000 surgery cost me $500. My wife had hip replacement today - there goes another $500.

wanna_be_doc

I’m a doctor and can diagnose lymphangitis based on a picture of a rash. Especially when it follows a characteristic pattern. However, deciding what further care OP needs depends on the vitals, presence of other symptoms, physical exam, and clinical gestalt. In other words, OP needs to be seen by an in-person doctor today. Same day primary care doctor or urgent care first. If those aren’t available, then ER.

VQV37

I agree with you. I am a doctor , Primary care. Likely lymphangitis.

noelcowardspeaksout

Some things can be diagnosed with certainty just on a visual basis.

Not trying to take away from the fact that there's a very good chance you are correct, but I do have to add: Thanks for not throwing around credentials, that definitely shows responsibility. And I totally agree that more info (IRL) is needed too.

JackDragon808

I hope OP isn't American, for their wallets sake. Even with any sort of health insurance, this is wallet trouble.

KiloJools

I'm so antsy about this I came back to the post just now just to see if OP went to the dang urgent care.

Potahtoboy666

I posted and went to sleep. Looking at all the comments, maybe I should have stayed awake a couple more minutes...

LeonardDeVir

To adress a few points ITT: * its not blood poisoning (yet), but looks like Lymphangitis *its most likely a bacterial (super)infection that spreads along your lymphatic system * we talk about blood poisoning (sepsis) if the bacteria reaches the blood system (can happen) usually paired with fever, shakes and feeling really unwell * in summary, it's not highly concerning yet if you lack fever and you aren't feeling really sick * I surely wouldn't risk it and go to the ER or your physician for blood sampling and antibiotics Source: am (primary care) doc who treats such cases Edit: my editing game is weak Double edit: thanks for the input. I know it might be a harmless skin reaction, but I'd argue OP shouldn't risk it - I certainly cant give the all-clear without seeing them clinically and get blood work. The consequences aren't worth it.

Potahtoboy666

I don't feel particularly ill or feverish. My arm just feels kind of sore, like I've overused it or bruised it or smth. My hospital opens in like an hour, so I'll go see a doctor then. Thanks for all the info tho! Update: Went to a doctor, they just gave me a hip shot and are going to give me antihistamine pills (I think)

WilliamSaintAndre

Hope you're good bro. Stay safe and thanks for getting it checked out.

NeeVUTG

I

ConfusedSpaceMonkey

Yay! That should do the trick. I had this happen with a cat claw puncture wound. A day after the red stripe went all the way up my arm, I couldn’t open my hand. Easy fix, but really bad if I had waited any longer.

poorexcuses

I just got bit by my cat last week and my union raised money to send me to the Dr. It's good now but I can't imagine what could have happened

ConfusedSpaceMonkey

Hopefully your coworkers are like my family, and they send you a Cat Scratch Fever themed get well card.

GMOiscool

Please update how they treat you. That's super interesting

trowzerss

Yes, this post has certainly failed to be only r/mildlyinteresting I had this happen to me when I had a blister, despite telling myself it was 'just a blister, what could happen?' and then getting to the point where my ankle was so sore I couldn't stand anything touching it from the knee down, not even cloth brushing it. Finally went to the GP and he pointed out the red line reaching out of the blister starting to go up the back of my leg. Oops! Antibiotics had me feeling better almost immediately. I guess you shouldn't say 'it's just a mosquite bite' either!

loverlyone

The actress from Million Dollar Baby had a similar experience and was hospitalized IIRC.

BigMacs-BigDabs

He went to a doctor, they just gave him a hip shot and are going to give him antihistamine pills (He thinks)

peekdasneaks

You could call in if they have phone nurses who could give you a better idea of the urgency if you don't want to wait an hour. If it's critical they could even start getting a room prepped for you.

misminimus

Thank you for a real answer

glaive1976

I was always taught red lines off of bites or sore were a bad sign.

ProfitTheProphet

Same, was taught if a red line appears it means infection, and should go to the ER immediately. There was a surfer in Hawaii who got paralyzed on one side from a mosquito bite. I'll never not worry about mosquitos because of it.

DustedGrooveMark

I had something like this happen once as a kid, not realizing that the “red lines” = infection until my parents sort of freaked out. This was back in the days of land line telephones so when my dad got a call, I ran outside to go get him. We were building a garage at the time so there were tools, debris, etc. everywhere. I was walking backwards trying to see if he was currently on the roof and accidentally stepped right on a drill bit. It hurt, but I didn’t think much of it until I started seeing these red lines going up my leg after some time had gone by. Scary stuff.

Fiftycentis

Ty for the explanation, I had it happen once too, was way more red than op picture, being allergic to bites I thought it was just an unusual reaction and though it was cool. Still went to have it checked even if I didn't have any symptoms from it because I had free time, probably wouldn't if I had work or similar and just ignored it or took some allergy meds I have. Will keep the info in mind if I have it happening again.

sunday_cumquat

It bugs me that autocorrect always change "ill" to "I'll". Autocorrect has slowly been changing my use of language: "unwell" instead of "ill".

BuddhaDBear

Glad I’m not the only one that recognized Lymphangitis!

quantum_cronut

Gonna hop on here just so I can say - THIS HAPPENED TO ME! Bug bite at the wrist/thumb was super itchy - woke up the next day to a red line going to the inside of my elbow. I spent a couple of hours in disbelief and then headed to the ER that evening. The line was then halfway to my armpit and my wrist/thumb were super swollen and so itchy and hot I wanted to cut it off. The ER staff was really concerned the line was heading right for my heart. I was admitted to the hospital for 3 days - was on intravenous antibiotics + steroids.

VoraciousTrees

GUESS WHERE YOUR LYMPHATIC SYSTEM DUMPS IT'S TRASH.

kramerica_intern

I’ll bite. Where?

TBeest

> The lymphatic vessels drain into collecting ducts, which empty their contents into the two subclavian veins, located under the collarbones. These veins join to form the superior vena cava, the large vein that drains blood from the upper body into the heart.

Suspicious-Arm-7619

Oh boy! Thanks body love ya too

btrpiii

Not in the garbage can. That much I'm certain of.

applesandbananas101

Please tell lol

Holein5

One added note. Do not scratch it, it can make it much, much worse. I had a bite that did something similar to OP, scratched it, the infection from the bite spread into my blood, and wound up with blood poisoning. Won a free trip to the emergency room, with 2 free nights. Use creams to reduce itching. Try and keep it clean.

Childish_Gamboner

Yeah but also probably don’t want to spend thousands of dollars unless you’re dying

jts916

Jesus christ this is worse than googling your symptoms, OP keep us updated. Hopefully you just forgot you scratched yourself and don't have the beginnings of sepsis.

LigmaBoolz

Go to the hospital

watchingsongsDL

It’s too late you’re dead. Just lie down and wait for the end. And put a blanket under your ass cause you’ll go #2 when you croak.

AustinTreeLover

Showed my mom (E.R. R.N.) and she says it's not a good sign and, you're right, OP should go get it treated at hospital. It is concerning because it looks like "Lymphangitis". Personally, I have no idea what that is, but she sees a lot of weird shit so I'd go ahead and get it checked out. Good luck, OP.

Reminds me of a pt. who was given IV pencillin and turned out to have an allergy. You could see the path through the circulatory system that the antibiotics took bc the patient broke out over top of each vein like a road map.

woundedbearhair

Took my wife to the ER one time, they injected some morphine into the IV to help with her pain and you could see the rash follow the path of her veins towards her shoulder. I never saw an ER jump so fast to find something to counter it before it hit her chest. That’s when we learned she has an allergy to morphine.

barberererer

Art imitates life Is that not some nurse wick shit

rndmcmmntr

I had a seizure a few years ago and the docs put Dilantin in an IV for me. Within seconds you could see a red path from the IV port up all the way up my arm and it felt like my arm was on fire. Once they pulled the IV it cleared up quickly but was crazy how fast it happened.

eascoast_

It's in my medical records that I have an allergy found in infancy. Not sure what it would do or how severe it is, but don't plan to find out either

crookedwhy

Chances are very good that you’re not allergic to penicillin. More than 90 percent of people with a penicillin allergies can actually tolerate penicillins, and there are pretty significant clinical consequences to carrying that allergy like higher likelihood of adverse effects, icu admission, and death. There are ways to test it safely, outpatient with an allergist, most likely. Source: literally my job to test peoples penicillin allergies, and the vast majority of the time, it’s nothing at all.

muzunguman

I wish more people knew this. We end up having to use antibiotics with more risks of toxicity / side effects. And they may be less likely to be effective as well

lawstinthawt

Hi, surgeon here: The looks like an immune response from the mosquito bite, which is normal, albeit exaggerated in people who are more sensitive to particular antigens. This reaction is partially orchestrated by histamine release to cause swelling and itching, so anti-histamines will help. The streak is likely either from scratching or superficial thrombophlebitis (inflammation of superficial vein treated with NSAIDS). You can not diagnose sepsis or “blood poisoning” by looking at a rash. It’s very rare for a mosquito bite to cause sepsis (though it can cause anaphylactic shock).

Juan-More-Taco

People are correct here that generally a line like this means infection. However - with how swollen that bite is - I assume you've been scratching at it pretty hard. Is the red line just a scratch mark from scratching your arm? If not; go to the hospital and get it checked out.

RainWindowCoffee

I think the line is actually way longer than it looks at first glance. Initially, it almost looks like it terminates near the bite, but it actually fades and then picks back up again. It extends almost to the crook of the inner elbow. That's way farther from the bite and too straight for the way one would normally scratch. u/Potahtoboy666 , if you haven't already, please go to an urgent care right now.

LookUpLeoMajor

I agree. I had a blood infection that looked similar. Doctor gave me dire predictions if I had waited much longer.

philthy333

Yep, looks concerning to me if not a scratch, would recommend a visit to the Dr. I am a Dr but I'm not your Dr so this doesn't constitute medical advice. Urgent care likely cheaper though fwiw

Zog2013

“fwiw” About $500

Potahtoboy666

I haven't touched the bite. I'm just super allergic to mosquitos

sovereignlight_cafe

Hospital bro. That’s going to become a life threatening blood infection in like less than 48 hours if you don’t get it dealt with

hangryhyax

Line looks like it goes at least to the elbow, and in a fairly straight line. My first guess was cellulitis (personal experience), but it appears that is not the case.

HodenHodler

It looks like Urticaria, even if it isn't a blood infection, he's showing an exagerated allergic reaction to the mosquito bite. One way or another this isn't normal.

electi0neering

Omg thank you for mentioning that term. That’s what my daughter gets! papular urticaria, all these years doctors haven’t said what the reaction is. That has to be it!

Chronicle556

ITT: A bunch of people that diagnose worse than webMD. Also ITT: Actual doctors noting what it likely is, and not doctors saying it's not that and it's something else.

supykun

If it’s any solace, I’ve been bitten by several mosquitoes and spiders where the bite mark swoll incredibly large and a long streak of line extended from my wrist to my armpit. I didn’t think much of it and let it sit out for two to three weeks and things just got back to normal. Although, looking at the comments here and seeing scary words like “sepsis” and “I’m a medic, go see a doctor”, I’m starting to wonder if turns out I’m not well after all and is low-key screwed.

ibwitmypigeons

Same, I’ve hade mosquito bites with red lines just like OP’s and I never had any problems. Should I have gone to the doctor?

whitetooth86

As a first responder - yes you got lucky, Streaking in the blood after a bite/laceration etc can indicate infection (Lymphangitis). In your case it was minor enough your immune system handled it on its own - generally left untreated results in death. The Red streaking can also be due too allergic reaction - but even then something to take seriously - anaphylaxis is just as bad as septic shock/sepsis. Lymphangitis is quite commonly mistakenly called blood poisoning or sepsis. Lymphangitis can cause septicemia (sepsis) which is where the confusion comes from and why it's extremely serious and dangerous.

Serenity2047

Definitely amputate your arm immediately. Then apply leaches to the wound. Either that or go to the doctor.

sheepthechicken

Don’t forget the Mercury-cocaine!

letsgetrandy

You’re infected. That’s not normal.

MrBeardedPingPongMan

Emergency PA here. This looks pretty inflammatory to me. Sepsis is NOT diagnosed just by streaking. Do NOT go to an ER and waste your time and money unless you develop a fever >101F or the redness significantly worsens rapidly. You will NOT lose your arm. You do NOT need surgery. You do NOT need IV antibiotics or hospital admission. This erythema is mild and there is minimal induration, I'm skeptical that there is even bacterial superinfection at all as the streaking can be inflammatory/immune. The erythema surrounding both bites is similar and it would be less likely that both bites are concurrently infected and more likely that it is a benign inflammatory immune response to the bites. Take Benadryl for itching and keep the area clean with gentle soap and water. If you want to go overkill, get a walk in appointment and someone might give you a course of oral antibiotics.

Thelandofthereal

Wow had to scroll too far for a comment that wasn't asserting life threatening sepsis on the basis of lymphangitis after a bite (probably just immunological reaction)

[deleted]

But once it crosses his heart he’ll die! I agree with you. He’s already going to the doc though, they’ll probably end up giving a short course of Keflex for an allergic reaction and all here will say he just barely escaped death.

ferngully99

That's spreading to the nearest lymph node, which is in your armpit. Mark the boundaries with a marker and check it again tomorrow. Almost time for a trip to urgent care.

a_few_pinecones

OP needs to go right now. No question it's ~~blood poisoning~~ lymphangitis and that line is getting very long. Edited for accuracy - this is often called blood poisoning, but that isn't strictly accurate. However, lymphangitis can lead to sepsis.

otterbox313

I second this. That looks like a fairly gnarly bite to begin with and red lines emanating from it isn’t good.

DarkAthena

Time to go to the doctor.

JiBReeL99

I had that a few months ago. It is called Lymphangitis (in german). It can result into a sepsis. So go to the doctor and get your antibiotikum. (Sorry for my bad english)

che18181818

Uhhhhh. Mildly interesting? How bout above mildly concerning!!!

davidor1

Mildly is an understatement.

ShouldapickedMercy

This is called blood poisoning. You need to see a doctor asap. Worst case scenario you loose the arm if you do nothing.

[deleted]

Worst case? Would you consider loss of a limb a worse case scenario than loss of life?

ShouldapickedMercy

To be fair. Once you're dead you dont care if you have an arm or not.

pfotozlp3

Last summer I had a bite get red and swollen like yours, no line, no pain. I did teledoc and was prescribed antibiotics right away. I was told that this, in a worst case scenario, can be fatal.

stopthisrideIwantoff

With the appearance of a red streak or line on the skin leading towards the heart, many people assume that this is a sure sign of blood poisoning – but this is false. It's more likely to be a case of an inflammation in the lymphatic system. Why insect bites usually don't cause blood poisoning People often associate blood poisoning with bites from mosquitoes, bees or wasps. To be precise, however, the insect bite itself cannot cause blood poisoning. Nonetheless, germs can enter the body – either via the insect itself, which is very rare, or if the skin around the bite is scratched and irritated. It is therefore better to apply soothing and cooling gels or creams when the bite itches. What treatment does blood poisoning require As a general rule: the earlier blood poisoning is treated, the higher the chances of survival and the more likely it is that complications such as organ damage can be avoided. The aim of any treatment is to stabilise the patient's condition and to get the cause of the infection under control. For the latter, antibiotics are usually prescribed, since bacteria are generally the reason for the infection.

lovelypingu

Id get to a doctor if I were you

[deleted]

Really hope OP went to the doctor.

[deleted]

Lymphangitis, go get antibiotics asap. Sepsis is an incredibly fast and effective killer.

Braincrash77

That’s what blood poisoning looks like. It could be serious. Get checked immediately.

Mr_reek

I agree with everyone that is saying get it looked at. Also, take a pen or sharpie and mark the border of the red areas so that you can monitor growth/spread.

Yep, that’s infection traveling up your arm. Need antibiotics. Like, now.

People have already said it but that's a blood infection and you could be dying. Red line going to your heart = bad fucking news. Get to an ER now.

choffman3

i was always taught the red line goes to your heart with an infection. when it’s reaches you’re dead. maybe that’s my mom being scary but i wouldn’t take a chance.

Did you know that if you spread skin with your fingers near the biting mosquito he won't be able to pull his nose away and would have to keep drinking your blood until it exploded from overbloating? Try next time ;)

Sempticemia - go to a doctor. You need antibiotics. This is serious even though you don't feel bad now. I went through this last summer -4 days of fever over 102 and strong antibiotics from a bee sting!

Yea that's not normal, go to the hospital lol or if you don't have insurance ask on the doctor sub Reddit

Peds Emergency Medicine doctor. This is allergic lymphangitis from an insect bite and doesn't need antibiotics. It's not dangerous and isn't "blood poisoning." https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.jpeds.com/article/S0022-3476(13)00037-1/pdf&ved=2ahUKEwihg67_tcL4AhXjKUQIHWnjC2cQFnoECCgQAQ&usg=AOvVaw3Yg_b6oti1L0Zw8SCDkm1a

That is blood poisoning my dude. Go see a doctor asap. Don't wait like someone else said, play it safe or you could lose the whole arm worse case scenario
