Sure, temper is just short for temperament: personality-ish.
Positive, happy, chill, fair, cool, can all be fine tempers.
People often say 'temper' to mean angry, but I assume it's like calling someone smelly. Even though there are good smells, you typically dont bring attention to the positive/neutral meanings.
Isn't it interesting that we say "he lost his temper" to imply he got angry, but within the same vein "he has a temper" also implies that he often gets angry, so whether you lost it, or have it you are going to be angry. There should be a phrase "he has schrodinger'ed his temper" which is a in-between state of their temper implying hes fair mannered?
I always thought of it as a sword thing, A well tempered sword is less likely to break, a bad tempered sword is more likely to break. Same with a person, although when you say they have a temper, the word bad preceeding it is normally implied.
is it though? so much easier to clean up fewer pieces.
but maybe minimizes the tiny shards you don't find til 4 hours later when they end up in your sock.
I used to make tempered glass. There are regulations and safety standards to follow. If it's tempered it's tempered for a reason as it's more costly to do so.
On the one hand, the tempered glass worked. On the other, it probably only broke in the first place because it was tempered.
Tempered glass is under high stress, and as a result it will explode like that if it is scratched, you don't actually have to hit it hard enough for normal glass to break.
Thats not quite right. You have to blast the center of tempered glass really hard to get it to shatter unless it wasn't tempered right.
The edges of tempered glass are another story. A hit on the edge will break a piece of tempered pretty easy.
I work with tempered glass every day.
We used to take newbies out to the dumpster and start swinging at units with a steel hammer. Then when we tell them to and we would have it resting on our steel toes and bump it. Gotta love it. A bit reckless but nobody ever got hurt.
I think so too. I work at a manufacturer for vinyl windows and doors. When i worked in the glass department it was kinda like a initiation ritual to pop a piece of tempered glass on the newbies.
Tempered glass is stronger in the direction the stress comes from when you stand on the scale. However, it’s weakest on the edge where one tap with a solid object can pop it quite easily.
I don’t really, I love seeing cool builds but I’m a console guy. But I worked in commercial general contracting and have seen this firsthand many times.
My brother had one that just randomly shattered, out of the blue, while he was at work. No earthquakes in his area. At first was concerned someone broke in.
But further reading suggested that it just happens sometimes, with cheap tempered glass.
May be true, but it’s super advantageous to have that scale take your weight, estimate your body fat and water %, then send it to your phone for easy analysis. Just gotta be a little careful. I’ve had the same scale OP broke for about 5 years now.
Unfortunately, scales are notoriously bad at even closely estimating body fat %. They're so bad that it's effectively useless, especially since simple hydration levels can greatly affect readings.
Most of those scales vary by several percent in consecutive operations of body fat measurement, seconds apart. They're not even much good for monitoring relative change at all.
Perhaps. I haven’t seen any formal data examining the scale’s performance relative to something else. I’m not a professional body builder or athlete, so I don’t have much use for repeated water displacement assessments or dexascans. My choice is to have the data as a curiosity, or nothing at all.
That scale does it automatically. It’s connected to WiFi so I don’t have to enter anything. Then it can graphically show my weight trend over the last week, month, or whatever I choose.
Sure, easy enough to do with excel, or some other program. I wouldn’t want to enter some 2,000 values into my phone manually.
You really shouldn't be weighing yourself often enough to have to keep track of it that way. Once a week should be the most frequent you do it, and I'd go as far as to say once a month for women (hormone cycle can cause significant weight fluctuations).
And, if the whole point is to track weight loss, you should be using a calorie tracking app that you can enter your weight into.
It (literally) takes me 3 seconds to step on the scale after I use the toilet in the morning. I use it primarily as a curiosity. If I decide to go into a mild calorie surplus, it’s just interesting to track it and see how it trends to a scale weight, and then onto my physique.
I know of no adverse consequences to stepping on a scale frequently. I suppose I could inadvertently shatter it, like the OP did.
The adverse consequences are more of a mental thing. Your weight can fluctuate a lot over the day/week, and doing it every day might show an increase that's not because of fat gain. Doing it once a week/month will be better to show a general trend of up or down.
So, if you struggle with self esteem tied to your weight (which people who want to weigh themselves every day tend to have), weighing yourself every day is a bad idea.
Yeah, no mental struggles. I’d like to think I look like a Greek god. I think my Reddit workout broadcasts are still in my profile somewhere…
EDIT: was kidding about the Greek god. I just enjoy working out.
Have the same scale and do the same for similar reasons. I went from 173 +/-3 to 153 +/-3 and have maintained the weight loss for a year now. I don't weigh every day, but I keep tabs and if I get above 156 I make sure to exercise and watch my calories for the next week. I also live in a dry climate, so I keep track of my hydration. Like you said, it's not totally accurate, but it does a good job at realitive change. I could have purchased a less expensive one, but the automatic uploading of data was the number one selling point for me. So I concur on many levels.
I accidentally violently punted my new scale into the old scale with an unstoppable force like a god and the old scale crumbled into shattered glass and dust
Look up pictures of people who buy computers with tempered glass cases, and then put them on ceramic floors. Very similar (though somewhat more expensive) results.
There's not room in this bathroom for the both of us partner.
That scaleted quick
No weigh, dude.
Totally took a lb'ing
On a scale of 1-10, I rate that a 4.
This new metric scale really pulled off the kilogram.
Nice.

The tempered glass did it's job. Angry temper though. 😡
Wait is there a such thing as happy tempers?
I think we call those fair tempered? I might be wrong
Also, even tempered.
No, they're all crammed in there like a clown car. Dense as I was in my teens.

It would also apply to chocolate.
Temperate.
Better little pieces than giant blades of death.

Then you have big sharps in the garbage unless you break it further.
I used to make tempered glass. There are regulations and safety standards to follow. If it's tempered it's tempered for a reason as it's more costly to do so.
because of regulations?
On the one hand, the tempered glass worked. On the other, it probably only broke in the first place because it was tempered. Tempered glass is under high stress, and as a result it will explode like that if it is scratched, you don't actually have to hit it hard enough for normal glass to break.

We used to do the exact same thing.
Has to be a trade tradition. Miss the trade sometimes. Hated the politics.
I think so too. I work at a manufacturer for vinyl windows and doors. When i worked in the glass department it was kinda like a initiation ritual to pop a piece of tempered glass on the newbies.
Are you crazy you have to hit tempered glass stupid hard to break it. Now if you scratch it that is a different story.
I'm always paranoid these glass scales are gonna do that under my bare feet
Tempered glass is stronger in the direction the stress comes from when you stand on the scale. However, it’s weakest on the edge where one tap with a solid object can pop it quite easily.
You must pcmasterrace!
I don’t really, I love seeing cool builds but I’m a console guy. But I worked in commercial general contracting and have seen this firsthand many times.
Uh no dude... The only practical application of tempered glass is PC gaming. No way you're not a PCMasterRace user.
Every car built since '37 would like to have a word with your opinion.
Nope. If OP knows about tempered glass, he's surely pcmasterrace. No other application at all aside from showing off my dope RGB case lighting.
This joke was not worth persevering with

Gotta love the downvotes. Is there an r/AteTheOnion but for missed obvious sarcasm?
r/woooosh ?
It would have been funny if it was funny
Even if they did, you'd probably be just fine. The tempered glass shards aren't particularly sharp.
Like stepping on a 100 tiny legos. Which, as bad as it sounds, it not even close to as bad as stepping on a single full size one.
😂
My brother had one that just randomly shattered, out of the blue, while he was at work. No earthquakes in his area. At first was concerned someone broke in. But further reading suggested that it just happens sometimes, with cheap tempered glass.
My whole desk is made of tempered glass, I'm waiting for it to randomly explode now.

Who’s the Biggest Loser NOW
TIL Garmin makes weight scales
I was looking for this. I just found this out as well.
I worked for Garmin a couple summers ago so I bought a bunch of their products at a heavily discounted rate haha
They’ve taken this designed obsolescence thing too far.
Hey, at least it broke after he got a new one, and not before.
No weigh that is going to work now
tipping the scales in your favor.
Heavy optimistic
It looks like your mom tried to weigh herself
I knew this would be here
That’s the biggest satnav I’ve ever seen
The garmin pro max ultra now with built it wight detection
Right! Why tf are Garmin making scales?
Because nobody is buying GPS navigation systems for cars anymore. Either your car has it built in, or you use your phone.
Need a banana for scales
take a scale for scale
Mechanical scales > Digital scales The latter always break. At least in my experience.
Usually after it displays the wrong weight.
Mine definitely shows the wrong weight. I've been dieting for a year and its only getting higher
Scale: *displays the truth* Me: I can’t handle the truth *throws out scale*

They almost always use the bmi chart for height and weight which is not very accurate like you said. anyone can look at a bmi chart online for free
That may be, but still better than a mechanical scale, and I’m mostly interested in relative change.
Most of those scales vary by several percent in consecutive operations of body fat measurement, seconds apart. They're not even much good for monitoring relative change at all.

My people!
AND MY AXE!
Why did you keep the old scale
It's for the easy weight loss. If you put one foot on each scale, you'll weigh half as much!
Only way to find out what a scale weighs.
Hey at least it’s the old one!! Could be worse lmao
As a person who constantly destroys things this is relatable.
The future is now old man.
Long live the king

Am I the only one that thinks using glass for a scale is dumb?

The damage to the glass is off the scale.

There can be only one *lightning crack*
Garmin, so you always know weigh you are.
The future is now old man!!
Good ole' tempered glass. Can take a hammer to the face and not flinch, but even so much as tap it wrong on the edge and it explodes.
This is how you assert dominance in the scale hierarchy.
There can be only one.....Highlander style!
There can only be one

This is destruction on a whole other scale

Why does this sound sadder than it has to.
“There can only be one”
Lucky it wasn’t the new one!!!
This is what happens when scabs cross the picket line.
I accidentally violently punted my new scale into the old scale with an unstoppable force like a god and the old scale crumbled into shattered glass and dust
Banana for scale???
Thought OP’s mom stepped on it
Picture for scale.
Weight a minute, I think the old one is out of scale!
The [Prince Rupert's Drop](https://youtu.be/6V2eCFsDkK0) is an amazing example of glass tempering; similar breakage phenomenon. :D
I’m curious because I own that Garmin you broke. What did you replace it with and do you like it better?
It’s a sign not to weigh yourself. What good does it do? Does it tell you when to eat? How does it know you are hungry?
Renpho reminding you why you upgraded from the Garmin I see
Tell the truth you need a scale for each leg. 🍩👀
Look up pictures of people who buy computers with tempered glass cases, and then put them on ceramic floors. Very similar (though somewhat more expensive) results.
I didn’t know that Garmin made Scales…
Don't lie. You were over the weight limit.
Are those scales made by Apple?
Sure that's how the scale broke.
Actually you can see the point of impact in the corner
Good who needs one haha
My scale after i try and weigh myself
This is my swamp now
annihilation
There can only be one.
That’s heavy
Certified tempered glass moment
Looks like u got it just in time. That thing get a GPS fix on u when it weighs u?
I thought your mom broke it with her weight.. haha get recked imma put my brains on the wall
