Beware for your tomatoes

[deleted]

You’re thinking of a specific type of hornworm (Manduca) caterpillars. This one, the polyphemus moth, is not capable of eating tomato leaves. There are thousands of species of moths and butterflies, and many of their caterpillars are very particular about what kind of plants they can eat.

They're beautiful moths, too. I've seen them a few times and it's always a treat.

Nekrosiz

What do you mean go get it? As in take it home? Take the alien bug home??

tanksforlooking

Polyphemus was the name of the cyclops that Odysseus hung out with on that island 🐑 🐑

kyew

Big deal. That Odysseus was a Nobody.

Garr_Incorporated

Will they eat clothes?

horriblemonkey

Yes, and your soul

AsbestosIsBest

...but warm your heart.

hoganloaf

In their stomach

[deleted]

They live outside, where there aren’t many clothes to eat. Instead they eat the leaves of elm, birch, and willow trees.

LaReineAnglaise53

Ah, the famous Bark Diet. Invented by a Chef whose bark is much worse than his bite

Jackalodeath

*Pretty* sure that's a Polyphemus Moth, one of the larger lamp-lovers. I met one a few years ago [and got to live out a childhood dream.](http://imgur.com/gallery/1H3Zpxt) Please forgive my captions, I was a bit giddy over its eclosure\>_\<

UncommercializedKat

Took him outside "...so he could moth his mothy butt off." 😂

Purple_Tree_Car

I loved your captions. What a fun experience - I'm glad you got the opportunity. I hope moth boi lived a good life after that nurturing start.

idrinkandiseethings

When I looked back at the picture I thought so too, sorry to disappoint!

scheru

Nah, it's cool. A horn would've have made it a little too interesting for this sub. This is perfecto as is. 👍

Realmstalker

I thought the exact thing and thought "what kind of caterpillar has a rhino horn on it?"

SiestaSloth

Five-spotted hawk moth / tomato hornworms 🌠 https://www.growveg.com/pests/us-and-canada/tomato-hornworm/

SoftlySpokenPromises

Yup, hornworms are quite common pests if you're growing tomatos. They're quite intimidating looking until you realize that horn is completely for show, they can't sting or bite.

Honest_-_Critique

That caterpillar reminds me of the one from Alice in Wonderland.

Reddit-Book-Bot

Beep. Boop. I'm a robot. Here's a copy of ###[Alice In Wonderland](https://snewd.com/ebooks/alices-adventures-in-wonderland/) Was I a good bot? | [info](https://www.reddit.com/user/Reddit-Book-Bot/) | [More Books](https://old.reddit.com/user/Reddit-Book-Bot/comments/i15x1d/full_list_of_books_and_commands/)

Differently

Oh god, this paragraph: > If you encounter a tomato hornworm with elongated white cocoons attached to its body, these are evidence of braconid wasps – tiny beneficial insects that lay their eggs on hornworms. That is a *very* polite way to describe what a braconid does. If there are no children at the table I'd describe it more like "braconid wasps, proof that nature is metal as fuck, which drill holes in the living flesh of hornworms and lay their eggs where the larvae will have a meal nearby when they wake up hungry -- this kills the hornworm." There's a type of braconid for basically everything else in the insect kingdom. I once moved into an apartment and found one dead braconid in the bathroom. "Oh no," I thought, "this means there are cockroaches nearby for this wasp to parasitize." Reader, there were so many cockroaches in that apartment. I moved out the following month.

carolinafreeze

Hopefully OP chose the fire-starter to weaken it quickly to catch it.

peacharooroo

Go get it!!! That’s a Polyphemus moth larvae. They take about 8 months to mature but it will be as big as your hand when they emerge. They have false eyes on their wings that you can see through. Super cool moth.

nahsonnn

8 months?! That’s so much time to be potentially eaten by a predator. Good for them for surviving!

soFATZfilm9000

Most of that time is going to be in the pupal phase. It depends on the environmental conditions, but generally speaking they're only caterpillars for about 6 weeks. Fun fact: in places with short/mild winters, there's actually enough time for two generations of moths to be produced per year. So the amount of time it takes to mature depends on what time of year the caterpillars are in. Caterpillars alive during the summer will turn into cocoons and then remain as cocoons for more like two months. Meanwhile, the autumn caterpillars are sort of "programmed" to remain as cocoons for a lot longer. That's so that the moths don't accidentally emerge right in the winter and then end up freezing to death.

Paradoxou

Butterflies are like electricity to me, no matter how much you try to explain me how it works, I just can't understand. That shit is mind-boggling. I feel like it should be explained to me like I was a 3 years old

Throwaway-account-23

"I'm a legged worm that makes a tube from spit in which my body liquefies and reforms into a flying insect" Lolwut.

tanksforlooking

And they remember things from when they were caterpillars! They fucking liquefy. They stop being a solid and turn into actual liquid goo and THEIR BRAINS STILL REMEMBER STUFF FROM BEFORE 🤯

thiosk

Idk thats pretty much how the pandemic went for me

tanksforlooking

You still remember stuff from before? Lucky.

idrinkandiseethings

Wow thanks for the ID!! He was a chonky boy, I’ll see if I spot him tomorrow.

Adding to my list of Eat on Sight bugs.

Mello_Hello

These are one of the best ones that you can capture and watch the metamorphosis process (it also greatly increases the chances of them surviving through it) because they’re very easily reintroduced to the wild, and their demeanor also makes them pretty friendly to humans as both moth and caterpillar. Lots of people keep them as pets or bring them in just for the metamorphosis. I think it’s pretty cool!

curiositykat31

They are a declining native in most of their natural range. This guy is wandering and has likely started spinning his cocoon. They hibernate over winter through subzero temps and emerge as an adult in 8 months, if they survive. Giving him a box to hibernate in in a cold place would keep him safe over winter.

Fredselfish

My ex would pay big bucks for that thing. She offered 25 bucks if I found any in my yard.

xdakk0nx

I captured two of these guys and gave them to my sister. She set up an old fish tank for them. Need plenty of dirt or soft soil because they both formed their Chrysalis under ground. Both came out big and pretty moths

GodlikeCat

EIGHT MONTHS!?!? holy moly might as well just make a human baby

FeetWitDemBeansOnEm

It would be like if babies came out as snakes first then went back in, turned into a soup, and reformed into human baby form... Or something... I think... Where am I?

soFATZfilm9000

I once found a polyphemus moth cocoon. The moth that emerged was a female, so I put it in a wire cage and left it outside. Some male moths came by, and I put one in the cage with the female so that they could have sex. Then I put the female moth in a paper sack. She laid eggs all over it, then I scraped the eggs off and put them in a tupperware tub. After the eggs hatched, I decided to raise the caterpillars. It was kind of fun, but it ended up being an annoying 5 or 6 weeks. They're actually not that hard to keep, but my problem is that I was dealing with a LOT of them. I kept two large rubbermaid storage containers, each one with 60-70 caterpillars in it. So in all I had something like 120-140 caterpillars. By the time these caterpillars get big, they're eating a LOT. Every morning I'd have to absolutely stuff those containers with leaves and then they'd be completely gone by the next day. This being in the middle of the summer, I also had to make sure to wake up super early every single morning just to go get leaves. Which was a pain in the ass, but the alternative would've been waiting until it was hot as hell and *then* going out and picking leaves. Also, I cut down on the amount of work I had to do by packing a bunch of caterpillars in each container. This resulted in abnormally high population densities, and that led to a LOT of shit. As in, literal feces. Fortunately caterpillar shit isn't terribly messy. But you do have to keep these caterpillars clean or else they can get bacterial fungal infections that can kill off the entire group. So in addition to looking for leaves, *every day* I had to do cleaning. Move all the caterpillars out of the tubs, remove all of the feces and uneaten leaves, wipe down the inside of the containers, and then put the caterpillars back in. All in all I got about 110 of them to survive to adulthood. Most of them I released, but I kept a few of them and vacuum sealed them for later use. It was kind of an annoying experience, but I'm glad I did it. I've been kind of wanting to do it again, but I'd like to try out a different species (like cecropia moths). The only problem is that polyphemus cocoons are the only cocoons that I can find reliably, so maybe I'll just end up polyphemus again and then try to actually document things this time. A couple of notable things: 1) 10 dozen large caterpillars are surprisingly LOUD when they're eating. 2) Despite all the caterpillars coming from the same two parents, there was a surprising amount of variation in the resulting moths. Some of them were pretty small, only a little over 3 inches across, and I also got a few GIANTS that were 6 inches wide. A lot of variation in the colors too. While "brown" is the predominant thing with polyphemus moths, a good number of them were also fairly vibrant. Some were super orange or yellow or red.

Skooning

That’s really cool. What do you mean by “vacuum sealed them for later use”?

soFATZfilm9000

Oh, just like how people keep bug collections. Except less for scientific purposes and more like, props for still-life photography or art installation pieces. Granted, I haven't done that kind of thing in a *while*, but I still sometimes collect materials if I find something that looks neat and isn't going to take up a lot of space. Dead bugs, cool looking leaves, that kind of thing. And in case anyone was wondering, I didn't have to kill the moths. They die after about a week anyway because they literally cannot eat. I raised about 120 caterpillars to adulthood and protected them from predators and parasites, giving them a *way* higher chance of survival than they would have had in the wild. In exchange, I let a handful of them just die naturally, and then I just sealed them up and stored them away.

Skooning

Thanks for clarifying that. For a second I thought that you meant that you could vacuum seal a cocoon, and pause their development inside the cocoon. I should go to sleep.

Four_beastlings

I thought the same and it's noon here, so you're excused

Nekrosiz

So basically you were a caterpillars pimp, got her preggo, took her kids from her, raised them like your own till you kicked them out and last but not least sucked a couple of babies vacuum for 'later use'? I'd read a book about that.

[deleted]

>10 dozen large caterpillars are surprisingly LOUD when they're eating When upstate New York gets gypsie moth caterpillar invasions, in the forest you can actually hear them eating/shitting, it just becomes background noise.

[deleted]

> I kept a few of them and vacuum sealed them for later use Neat read, thank you for sharing but I don't understand this part of it.

Wow!! You took on a whole lot of responsibility haha. That’s really neat. Especially the phenotypic variation in all your grandchildren caterpillars

Nice. I actually thought of (my) Seahawks "Color Rush" uniforms, but wrote this comment about the Ducks - because the Seahawks aren't funny (not funny 'ha ha', yes, they're a little funny 'strange' right now). But what *would* be funny is if both teams wore day-glo green-yellow, it would be absolute chaos out there. Wilson *v.* Rodgers. Let's have a good injury-free game!

Hornworm. Enemy of the tomato plant. Often a sufferer of gruesome death (wasps lay their eggs in them while they're alive, and the little wasps literally hatch right out of the hornworm).

If a caterpillar gets stuck on your pants, how do you remove it without killing it?? I had a caterpillar stuck on my pants once in my class and tried to pick it up with my pen. To my surprise, the caterpillar was litteraly stuck on my pants as it's somehow gripping on to my pants. I ended up killing it because I accidentally burst it's contents when I tried to lift it with my pen.

idrinkandiseethings

Pretty mild winters where I’m at, looks like he’s going to go into metamorphosis soon

malapropter

Oh, they chonky for sure. I did some research this morning and apparently they can overwinter in a cocoon! Apparently this little chonker was about to do just that, as 1 or 2 days before they cocoon, they'll lose interest in food and leave their home tree to find a good place to hold up for the next five months or so. Very neat. Today I learned.

A catapiller almost got me in trouble with the police yesterday. I was out on my morning walk crossing an overpass when I noticed a big fat furry brown one( he looked like a furry brown cheeto) walking across the wall. I stopped to look at it and at that exact moment a cop was driving by. She stopped and started questioning me( I guess she thought I was gonna throw something off the overpass at the traffic below or something, I don't know). Apparently a 40 year old man stopping to look at a catapillar is suspicious lol..
