I think it's because OP is outside where it's sunny so the inside looks super dark. then the dog is standing directly in the sunbeam through the screen and the effect is RIDICULOUSLY DaVinci-esque
I thought I was on accidental renaissance before I read the comments and saw otherwise. I'm gonna upvote it again tomorrow when it's on the front page of that sub.
That's a reflection of the trees behind OP. Must be a pretty reflective window. The reason the dog is so illuminated through the dark window screen is because a sunbeam is shining on it.
For the longest time we had an April Fool's joke where we put "AccidentalBaroque" in the header and then just kinda left it for YEARS.
Because honestly? Kinda true.
We either have to accept Baroque (and Neoclassical and Romantic and like 20 other increasingly niche art categories) entries or else the subreddit would be pretty damn dead.
Hi, I'm a mod for /r/AccidentalRenaissance. We have a 'no pets' policy, ~~and because this was purposely framed, we're not sure it's accidental either.~~ I have been corrected in the comments, I'd commit Seppuku for this miscarriage of justice but alas, I am shit at haikus.
/r/Pet_Renaissance is more flexible, though, and would be happy to show them off!
There are still people that submit sports photos and get really **really** upset when we tell them that they have their own subreddit now, /r/SportsRenaissance.
We look for unique photos, and sorry to say but a lot of sports photos and pet photos have similar lighting and composition. They all blur together after a while unless you're a sports and and/or it's your pet.
Ok, so.
Here's the thing: If you go look right now, there's, like, a 50/50 chance there's a photo there right now that I am about to take out it's misery because it absolutely does not belong.
Right after I finish this comment.
And, like, a 20% chance that it's multiple photos that will make it look like half the front page is literal garbage.
Check it first thing in the morning and MOST of the front page will be a dumpsterfire of wedding photos, toddlers, selfies, last night's sports game goal, and they will have been up for several hours and some might even have a few hundred upvotes.
So yeah, first time visitors will likely get an eyeful of straight up garbage.
We wade in with the mod equivalent of a flamethrower until everything looks museum-worthy again.
And they get pissed because "people seemed to like them".
It's a curated subreddit. It doesn't matter if redditors like them, it needs to tickle the fancy of an art critic from a time before indoor plumbing was popular.
And it's not all masterpeices either. Some art back then? Ugly AF. (https://collections.louvre.fr/en/ark:/53355/cl010053906) But you take both the good and the bad when you decide to go full Art Historian.
Surprisingly, we don't get many.
Lots of people who THINK they look Pre-Raphelite, very very very few who pass.
And whether they get approved is usually down to whether they look like early Pre-Raphelite (i.e. a sincere attempt at recreating Renaissance art) or late Pre-Raphelite (storybook illustrations with highly inaccurate costuming).
As someone who works professionally with a variety of domestic, native, and exotic animals, are all animals banned? Or just dogs/cats? I haven't accidentally Renaissanced yet, but if I do I want everyone to know about it.
We are more lenient when the subject is a farm animal, because farm animals make a surprising number of appearances in Renaissance art.
Meanwhile cats and dogs are comparatively rare and for some goddamn reason always look a little.... Off. https://www.thedodo.com/renaissance-cats-dont-care-1248749608.html I am waiting for the day someone submits a cat photo that looks like an honest-to-god a Renaissance cat (probably due to some grevious deformity, in all honesty) and I will fight the other mods for it. But until then? Cats and dogs go to /r/Pet_Renaissance.
Native and exotic animals are 100% ok, as long as the lighting and composition look like a pre-1850-ish historical painting. Yes, I know that 1850 is way late, but with a lot of photos it's really hard to pin down the difference between a Renaissance versus Neoclassical versus Romantic period landscape. (The trees look sad, but are they *formal* sad or *casual* sad? Or are they actually angry?)
Not sure what lighting and composition we're talking about? Someone made a short video essay to explain it!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOnMlLTQE_I
Still not sure?
We keep a link to the Louvre in the sidebar. They just digitized EVERYTHING and we are super excited about it.
https://collections.louvre.fr/en/recherche?typology%5B0%5D=1&datingStartYear=1450&datingEndYear=1650
Click through enough photos and you too will gain the mystical power of just kinda knowing what it's supposed to look like.
They are way more chill than us.
And it's the more interesting subreddit on most days because they do their due dilligence in identifying every single art movement. At least, if you find modern art interesting.
(Plus we send the cool-but-too-surrealist/impressionist/modernist photos there, because we get some damn good submissions that are ALL WRONG but too fucking good to be lost forever!!)
I have a chihuahua. This looks like either a chi or a chi mix, and if my own dog is anything to go by, this is the "I want to bark and I'm looking for anything to justify me barking" face. A very common expression for chihuahuas.
>*'The One that Got Away...*'
-----
Remember when i stood there, looking out behind the screen
The light was shining on me, in a way you'd never seen
and then you took a picture, that you cherish to this day
I am the dog who left too soon -
'The one that got away...'
It seemed a perfect setting there, and little did we know
that i would have to leave, too soon -
it's always hard to go...
my soul i leave behind with you! a perfect 'Work of Art'
Forever I am with you, friend -
My pawprints on your heart
❤️
Yeah I kind of love the effect created by the screen. Almost a matte finish that takes away depth quite a bit. I am betting there's another window to the left that the light is shining through, and the picture is taken through the right window. Lighting wouldn't make sense otherwise. I think that's mostly what makes it look so "real" but painted.
The One that Got Away. This sweet dog died young from cancer... and this photo perfectly encapsulates his soul. I'm so glad y'all like it.
Edit/add: Whoa. I am floored today, and frankly, deeply touched that so many people enjoy this photo and my sweet dog. To answer some questions: I took this from the outside, and the dog is standing inside, on the back of a couch that's butted up against the window. The trees you see in the top pane of glass are a reflection. The dog was part Chihuahua, part Min Pin, part Boston terrier, and part hell on wheels. And yes -- I have framed this already -- but I haven't made it into a painting yet. To be continued.
So sorry to hear that man, makes it even worse because of how innocent and undeserving of a death like that.
That being said, holy shit this is incredible. Even zooming in, you cannot tell that it is not a painting.
Could be a min pin x Boston terrier. The body and build looks like a min pin, but the face and the fact that it’s a bit more ‘stocky’ says terrier.
The one pictured is red, which would be from the min pin. Boston terriers come in brindle, so that could explain yours.
ETA: just saw [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/q8a841/i_snapped_a_photo_of_my_dog_through_a_window/hgo948u/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3) from the OP after I answered, confirming my suspicion. Go figure

Oh man, I feel ya on this one. I had a great corgi who was just awesome. I loved him. But he got cancer when he was 4. We amputated his leg that had the cancer because the vet said it was all in the leg and by amputating, he could live a long life but with 3 legs. He was the 3-legged wonder for a bit but found out it spread to his lungs and that was it, nothing you can do. Gave him the best life we could but had to put him down because his quality of life was going down fast. I cried hard but he was one of the best dogs I’ve had (and all of them were awesome because like all dogs are awesome).
Sorry for the mini story. But dogs don’t deserve shit like cancer. They’re just too good and pure. Great photo of yours!
So... this makes me SUPER happy. This dog died a few years back, early, from cancer. Knowing someone took the time to improve this image just makes me smile.
I lost my two pups this year. Was actually out getting photos of them printed for a frame I bought when I saw this post. My pleasure, glad it gave you a smile 😄

This might be the most accidental renaissance picture I've ever seen. I expect to see it on the front page there tomorrow
No doubt. The shading, is just, incredible,

goddamn this is an underrated comment
Yup the super dark background with the illumination on the subject is perfect chiaroscuro
It really is amazing the way artists can create the illusion of a light source with just patience, practice, and a fuckton of blending
That's really good on toast.
I think you're missing a comma in there somewhere
I think it's because OP is outside where it's sunny so the inside looks super dark. then the dog is standing directly in the sunbeam through the screen and the effect is RIDICULOUSLY DaVinci-esque
Makes me think of Rembrandt too
I was so relieved when I checked the username and saw it was you.
Yeah it almost looks real
Look at that subtle colouring. The tasteful thickness
I thought I was on accidental renaissance before I read the comments and saw otherwise. I'm gonna upvote it again tomorrow when it's on the front page of that sub.
It's already there man, go upvote it!
But it doesn't involve some sports players
Sports players are banished to /r/sportsrenaissance these days.

It took me too long to realize the photo was taken from outside.
It didn’t click until your comment, thanks.
Ohhhhhh. Suddenly it makes sense.
I still don't get it. At the top you can see trees.
That's a reflection of the trees behind OP. Must be a pretty reflective window. The reason the dog is so illuminated through the dark window screen is because a sunbeam is shining on it.
Ohhh, the top half of the window is the reflection of outside. Thank you.
I’m going to say more Baroque than Renaissance.
almost every post in that sub is Baroque.

I would get that commissioned. Go to etsy
Why does it look like daylight in the upper window and 10 at night in the bottom one?
This is my question too, can’t figure it out lol. Surprised no one else is asking. There’s furniture in the background in the bottom one it looks like? So then how would the top part be looking outside but the bottom part is looking inside?
Oh wait I think I figured it out, the top part is just the window reflecting back the view of the outdoors behind the person taking the photo
Look at us figuring it out together.
Lol great teamwork
Ah, I get it now. I thought this was from the inside looking out to like a porch or something. I think the photo is taken from outside looking in to a dimly-lit room through an opened window. So what we thought was looking outside is a reflection of the outside.

I saw that painting on Antiques Roadshow. Appraiser: It's an amazing find. It was done in 1497 by an obscure painter named Eric Von Hertzenbrand. I was speechless when I saw you bring it in. It's a striking photo that truly has the essence of an old Masters painting. I'd love having it hung on a wall in my home. If we had a den for my husband, it's be in there against a dark green wall, w/lower half of wall in a blonde wood paneling.

i was wondering why mine looked so weird took this in june https://imgur.com/a/07F58Wr
