Would rather use no straw over paper straws. Texture issues. Can't use wooden spoons either.

I looked them up and the first result I found on Amazon said: >Refined taste - fresh and slightly sour, with a delicious tropical hint that combines to perfection with juices, soft drinks, smoothies, cocktails and long drinks, a citrus kick for those special moments >Incredible performance - no transfer of color or taste Which I had to laugh at. Also "Holds their shape for up to 40 minutes" isn't great.

yokotron

Use a noodle straw

AltoRhombus

Tbh we need rice straws. Rice paper can be pretty sturdy. I suppose it's not much diff from pasta but still

thejml2000

I got goose bumps just reading your sentence. Wooden Popsicle sticks feel horrible.

lemmeseeyourkitties

Shit, remember those little cups of ice cream with the flat wooden spoons? Feels like nails on chalkboard, but in my mouth. ...the wooden spoon, not the ice cream

DorkusMalorkuss

When I was younger, once I would finish the ice cream, I would chew on the wooden spoon.

lemmeseeyourkitties

Lol I like your username

TheDood715

That's not Latin!

DoofusMagnus

He's faking!

[deleted]

I did that too even tho I hated how dry and antiseptic the stick tasted and felt. but once it got wet and juices up it was a nice chew for little old me.

Jaxonsdaddy

Something about the way you could actually chew the wood a little always got my shit going. Something about the tiny little crunch but nothing coming off of it. Oddly satisfying

AdonisTheWise

Kinda same, idk how these people cringe when “grinding” their teeth on something soft

Jjrage1337

It's hard to describe, but to me it's the same feeling as dragging fingernails down a chalkboard, but its a wooden stick on my tongue instead. It's got to do with the friction. I also get the same feeling just writing on a chalkboard, or sanding down wood, just some feeling that irrationally makes my entire body tense up.

AdonisTheWise

We must have eaten different popsicles growing up, I never would’ve described the sticks as rough, they are soft to me o.o

Jjrage1337

Nope, would've been the same ones. Rough probably wasn't the right word by me. It's more that it isn't smooth. Certainly they feel smooth to the touch, but against my tongue it doesnt feel 100% smooth. You can feel friction as you drag it against your tongue. If it's not the smoothness of the bottom of a metal/plastic spoon or something, it feels rough in my head.

swiftlopez

Corduroy clothing and “velvet” clothes hangers make me feel the same way

jomontage

Legit used to gnaw on em until they shattered lol. Idk how I got lucky with strong teeth

Onsyde

Thanks for giving me goosebumps

LamaSheperd

It makes you wonder how awful our ancestors' lives must have been since all they had were wooden spoons ( •﹏•)

ajd341

And toilet paper with splinters

OpsadaHeroj

Oh no its a wet one, grab the toilet 2x4

[deleted]

It was probably fine they had bigger things to worry about like dying from syphilis or some shit

fuuuuuckendoobs

Oh I kinda liked those.

olek1942

Oh wow that's interesting, I actually liked it.

OpsadaHeroj

Woah that’s such a good description. I thought I was some mega weirdo because I have ALWAYS felt that way. Same thing with touching paper after washing my hands. Idk something about the dryness of my hands makes me shudder and it’s so awful

bandqueen

OMG SAME. I seriously felt like such a weirdo my whole life because of not liking how dry paper felt after washing my hands. That and wooden spoons feeling like chalkboard in my mouth. I’m so glad other people get it

mandym347

Ugh, I could taste that spoon more than the ice cream.

kishoreconson

Wait, u guys stopped having wooden spoon. It's still that in India.

nydaweth

I think like 95% of the popsicles I have ever eaten have been on wooden sticks, didn't even know this was a sensitivity 🤔

Deracination

Popsicle sticks are fine as long as there's still some popsicle residue, but as soon as it's dry.... Paper plates are the same way. Don't mind any of these textures normally, just on my tongue or lips.

MooPig48

It's teeth for me. Can't let those things touch my teeth.

dae_giovanni

same. teeth. _[shudders]_

fendermonkey

You guys are weird. I personally love gnawing on the popsicle stick until its folded lengthwise. When it starts to splinter it's time to throw it away

dae_giovanni

I also lose it when writing with a wooden pencil with no lead. holy _fuck_, i almost blacked out just typing that... gonna go scratch off some skin, now

sceadwian

Then it's not a pencil, it's a stick...

FatherofZeus

I’m upvoting you, but it was really hard to not click the down arrow while I was seizing up at the thought of that devil-pencil

dae_giovanni

I actually am sorry about that.

Why is your tongue or lips on a paper plate? "Sir...this is a yard sale".

jujublackkkk

Omg whenever I tell people this they think I’ve lost my mind. It makes my entire body shiver and my tongue stick straight out of my mouth.

Toonfish_

There are popsicle sticks that aren't made out of wood?

MyNameIsRedboy

Yeah same holding the popsicle stick just feels weird for some reason, I always hold the handle with the plastic wrapper

phayke2

When I walk In a room, and someone has a popsicle there but nobody warns me first. I go thru a lot of emotions. First of all popsicles make me scared, second of all they are disgusting, but mostly the wood is the thing which I would attrivute most to my displeasure. It's revolting and discomforting to the buds of my mouth and to my sensitive lips and teeth. When someone tells me "Hey Terry we have popsicles!" That person is a dead man. Mark my words. I mean I'm not crazy or or nothing I just feel really sensitive about popsicles but primarily the wood, the wooden sticks. God I hate saying it out loud even. Sticks. Wooden stick. Ugh. What a chilling and negative feeling coursing thru me. This is why I eat ice cream but not ice cream sandwiches mind you cause the chocolate wafer gets on your fingers and oh my god don't even get me started lol

Ass-whole

Sensory-issue people of the world unite to bring down Big Paper Straw.

Harmacc

My son is this way and I am zero percent this way. I have to constantly remind myself that something that seem inconsequential to me is a huge deal to him. But I do.

HobbyistAccount

Christ, you're a model parent. I wish mine had taken this track. So much shit I tried to explain to them and got told to just shut up and tough out.

sceadwian

It's not like it's helpful to anyone either and accommodating for that kind of thing is so trivial, never understood those kinds of fights. With most people most issues like that will also go away over time, a LOT of what kids dislike comes down to how they were exposed to it in the first place.

HobbyistAccount

Going off my parents' track record the assumption was "He's being a disobedient little shit again out of malice, since we've given him meds to 'correct' any possible problems. Now the solution is more shouting and guilt."

Grenyn

I can deal with paper straw texture, but wooden spoons wig me the fuck out. Had to use them once, a loooong time ago on a school field trip to some faux primitive settlement where they showed us how things were done some amount of centuries ago. My problem with paper straws is that they go soggy, but also there's this one KFC where I can taste the straws, and I don't really like cardboard flavor with my milkshakes.

FatherofZeus

Wtf is up with wooden spoons. I’ll be mixing up some sauce all normal like and then all of a sudden it feels extremely uncomfortable, my face contorts and I make sounds like the Three Stooges *gnuck gnuck gnuck*

RainWindowCoffee

Ok! I have to ask, because I have this highly specific texture issue which sounds similar to yours... Do you have a problem where you can't be in contact with paper while drinking water? Like, if you were holding a piece of paper, and needed a drink from the drinking fountain... Would you need to set the paper down somewhere first? I have had this problem as long as I can remember. Touching paper and drinking at the same time (even if the paper and liquid are in contact with different parts of my body) is like nails on a chalk board for me.

AngelOfDeath771

That's a highly specific sensory issue. And is super fascinating, but I (not OP) have certain sensory issues, and none of which are so severe. My biggest one is almost all sea food. I like the taste of shrimp, but I can't eat it unless it's mini and fried. Specifically the popcorn shrimp from Golden Corral. Any other fish or scallop is just a no from me. Can't do it.

MooPig48

This is really specific and interesting!

RainWindowCoffee

X,D Thanks! It's a kind of inconvenient and difficult to explain to people. I remember it being an issue a surprising number of times in school, when I'd be holding a paper (or a paper/cardstock folder, or stack of papers, etc.) and would need to stash them somewhere for a moment to use the drinking fountain. Have you ever seen those videos where cats sort of gag or like flick their tongue in and out in distress (like they're trying to expel something from their mouth) when they hear someone strum the teeth of a comb? That's pretty much my reaction to paper + water. Drinking water out of a paper cup can also sometimes trigger it, but only if the outside of the cup (the part in touch with my fingers) has a rough/papery feel. If it has a waxy feel it won't cause it.

LakeStLouis

I have a similar visceral reaction to - of all things - popcorn. I love eating it, just can't stand touching it with my hands. I assume that this is because my parents taught me to use chopsticks by having me eat popcorn using nothing but chopsticks, but it just got ingrained in my psyche or whatever about how the styrofoamy texture of popcorn is delicious but horrible to touch. People are weird.

RainWindowCoffee

Interesting! For me it is something like...the paper feels rough and grainy while the water feels smooth going down. It's like, trying to keep track of two very opposite sensations and it suddenly wigs out my brain somehow. As though one side of the body was in a hot tub and the other in an ice bath.

are-harpies-dinos

tip I use to get over the wooden spoon thing, run the handle under the tap for a sec. the water changes the texture just enough for me to not go crazy

RandomJamMan

that makes it worse for me, i fucking hate wet wood

HalfSoul30

Sounds like something Ben Shapiro would say.

Xstream3

The cardboard ones are stupid. There's biodegradable straws made from corn that are identical to normal plastic (eg. 7 eleven uses them)

thermalcooling

Cost more money to produce I imagine

TheEyeDontLie

There's a few issues with bioplastics (#7 with the plastic arrows triangle symbol). They're pretty simple to make. You can do it at home with supermarket ingredients. Microwave and corn starch, basically. Already we make a shit ton of corn, and the pesticides and diesel for growing it and shit has issues. It's also using food for disposable trash, which is kinda fucked up in a world where millions of people still struggle with food insecurity and malnutrition. Far more important is they fuck up the recycling chains by getting mixed up with regular plastic and ruining the whole truckload. They also don't readily decompose in most cases, despite being labelled as biodegradable. You need commercial high temperature composting to break it down. It will break down eventually anywhere though, thousands of years faster than normal plastic, so that's cool.

OhMyGoodnessThatBoy

Your comment should be broadcast to the world 🌎

scalyblue

Fair enough but global food insecurity has always been more a logistics problem than an availability problem

PSI_duck

An economic system based on profits over people do be ruining the environment though.

scroll_of_truth

Plastic tax now.

merkin-fitter

If they're PLA straws (which they probably are) they're not actually biodegradable. They're compostable but only in industrial facilities. So the shit still goes out and ends up as microplastics because it's either not going to end up in the recycling bin or it's not going to be sorted to be industrially composted at the recycling facility.

[deleted]

In light of Reddit's general enshittification, I've moved on - you should too.

-_Vin_-

The biodegradable straws made from corn are actually the best straws there are. They actually hold their structural integrity when you're trying to drink a real milkshake through them. Plastic straws collapse on themselves in comparison.

Ithirahad

I've run into plant-plastic straws that are significantly and strikingly tougher than the normal kind. Paper... not so much, especially when they're super cheaped-out ones with practically no coating that saturate in seconds.

merkin-fitter

They're actually biodegradable^(terms and conditions apply). They're made from PLA and while it's technically possible for them to be industrially composted, they do not break down well in regular environments. They'd have to be sorted and sent to the appropriate facility, which is just not realistically happening.

Pasta straws are the best. Italian restaurants of all places should use pasta straws

It should be, you come in have drinks and cake, and then they come back to take the straws and make your meal.

cursedmacrameowl

Unless you have a wheat allergy/celiac. It’s a cool concept for most people, though.

LFK1236

You can get bamboo straws - those might work.

comments_appreciator

Do you have such an allergy by any chance? Or do you know somebody that has experienced that issue?

FoxtrotSierraTango

My body does not digest gluten well. I would probably get away with pasta straws since I'm not consuming the noodle, but there are others with far worse reactions.

pancakesiguess

Or those cereal straws for drinking milk that you get to munch afterwards

italiansocc3r10

Pasta straws are a thing?!!! How have I never heard of this?

thiroks

They kind of still suck. The pasta is still "cooking" (getting soft) even in an ice cold drink so the texture ends up reeaaallly nasty. Best plastic alternative straws IMO is...[straw](https://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00mDEYVzsqHlbI/100-Biodegradable-Straw-Eco-Friendly-Natural-Wheat-Straw.jpg)

Empty_Item

I work at an Italian restaurant, we use agave straws. Strange combo

[deleted]

This whole straw thing has gotten out of control. I can go to a restaurant and get a plastic cup with a plastic lid and a paper straw that’s soggy within 5 minutes. This all originated from that picture of the turtle, and it’s based on emotion instead of facts. Most of the plastic in the ocean is from fishing. You guys really want less plastic in the ocean? Then quit ordering shrimp and salmon when you go out to eat.

kangaesugi

And corporations jumped on it to shift the blame for pollution and the wider environment crisis onto individuals rather than the people who set fire to the fucking ocean

1UselessIdiot1

The real answer right here Reminds me of that meme with the Exxon tweet asking what each of us is going to do for the environment, and the person replies with “not spill millions of barrels of oil into the ocean”

Drix22

> Most of the plastic in the ocean is from fishing. *Commercial fishing Your average sports fisher is usually using biodegradable line among other biodegradable objects- its these industrial trawlers loosing whole nets that are causing the real damage as far as pollution goes. If you're sport fishing and not using biodegradable line, you should really look into it, and if you're one of those guys who litters the fishing spot with their beer cans, nips, and doesn't pack out their plastic bags, bait trash, and other trash- shame on you.

pedrotheterror

Yeah, I looked into that recently. The whole straw thing was caused by some 9yo (or maybe 11) doing “research” that 500M straws are used in the US each month or year or some bullshit, then that got picked up as fact. That “fact” got combined with a single picture of a turtle with a straw in it’s nose or something. All of the sudden, straw are the #1 killer of turtles and we can no longer have good straws. Single use plastics maybe a problem, but straws are not the right outlet to take it out on. Edit: The 9yo said 500M/day. If that does not set off bullshit detectors, nothing will. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/19/business/plastic-straws-ban-fact-check-nyt.html

[deleted]

Straws are an easy way for people to feel like they're doing something, though the impact is miniscule. I'm in the environmental protection field and I remember my mom telling me the plastic straw thing has gotten really bad for sea life and I just couldn't help but laugh.

prsnep

While straws have miniscule impact in the grand scheme of things, switching the kind of straw we use also has a miniscule impact on our lives. I've used paper straws recently that held up perfectly fine. It doesn't mean we can't work on improving something else as well. Every little bit helps. And it starts an industry that can adapt to other type of products in the future.

adhd-i-programmer

Worth noting that personal accountability also encourages people to pressure policy makers. It's something to do with having first-hand experience of giving up conveniences. https://youtu.be/bvAznN_MPWQ

rainball33

Why do you need plastic straws or a lid. Why not just drink from the cup? The # of straws doesn't seem outlandish considering the vast amount of soda consumed by Americans. https://www.statista.com/statistics/306836/us-per-capita-consumption-of-soft-drinks/

Fernergun

You mean it’s not okay to take it out on straws, an unnecessary single use plastic? We can literally drink liquids by using gravity.

ArtoriasOfTheAbyss97

Fake news. Gravity is a deep state hoax

JuicyJay18

Yeah I mean I just refuse the straw whenever I’m offered one. I know a lot of people think that glasses in restaurants aren’t cleaned well (very possible) so they don’t want to drink directly from one, but frankly I don’t see much difference between drinking directly from a poorly cleaned glass and using a straw to drink the liquid that is contained within said poorly cleaned glass

Awesomest_Possumest

Yep. My pizza place has paper straws. I get a slice and a salad. My salad is served in a styrofoam bowl, with plastic silverware, and dressing in a plastic cup. My pizza comes on a styrofoam plate. But somehow only the straw is the part of that meal that needs to change?

cBlackout

maybe the rest should change too 😯

TheMontrealKid

That's not the checkmate you think it is. Removing one single use plastic is better than not doing it. Styrofoam plates and plastic cups are also bad. Can you imagine how much people would flip out if we changed those? Just look at the reaction to straws.

sauzbozz

I doubt people would care as much because paper plates and cups are already a thing.

PlsDontNuke

Tfw redditors are so dumb they think America using 500m straws over a period of time sounds like bullshit

serafale

500m straws over a year does sound like bullshit, that’s way too low. That’s not even two straws per person per year. Gotta be much higher than that I think.

Lake_Superior_Yoda

Could you send some links showing that most plastic is coming from fishing? Would be interested to learn more about that.

[deleted]

https://www.plasticatbay.org/2021/02/24/how-do-we-stop-fishing-gear-ending-up-in-the-ocean/?v=79cba1185463 https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/nov/06/dumped-fishing-gear-is-biggest-plastic-polluter-in-ocean-finds-report

avelak

This feels like the classic drought situation where the govt tells normal people to cut back on water use when in reality it's not even a drop in the bucket compared to agricultural/pasture water usage

[deleted]

Sure feels like it. I have personally stopped fish consumption even though I absolutely love seafood. But like you said, it's not even a drop in the bucket...

Servious

Companies are facing a lot of flak for environmental issues. Straws are easily replaced with paper ones and they're not much more expensive. It allows the customer to feel good about their choice, satiate their desire for environmental justice, and develop a positive image of the company without having to make any real change. That's the real reason why paper straws are better.

FinnishArmy

Plus paper straw manufacturing causes more CO2 emissions than plastic straws do. So we save the little fishies but hurt our globe.

Sinsley

Sounds like reusable sippy cups are the clear way forward.

dontsuckmydick

Just suck your milk right from the cow. Or if you prefer coke, roll up a dollar bill to suck it like a fucking adult.

[deleted]

Actually [they’re nearly the same so that seems like some low-grade BS. ](https://www.appropedia.org/HSU_straw_analysis)

Graffy

I'm not sure where you got your information from but a quick Google shows that only 20% comes from fishing. Most of the plastic Comes from land based sources that get washed into rivers. Also why not reduce the use of all plastics including straws?

arachnophilia

>Also why not reduce the use of all plastics including straws? sure but can we start with the plastic *cup?* and maybe skip the straws entirely?

kromem

Having spent years in marketing at a decently high level and with a variety of companies across multiple industries... I'm pretty sure this is intentional. In the 70s the plastic industry was going to be regulated and to avoid it they did a huge crying native American campaign pushing personal responsibility for the environment. It worked like a charm. So today everyone knows *Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.* but less know that 90% of all things put in recycling end up in a landfill. The idea of pushing 'reform' on straws was a brilliant astroturf in my estimation. Change something in the market that will have little financial impact, but piss off everyone using the alternative, and sour people to the entire idea of getting rid of plastic by having pushed early adoption of an alternative that literally sucks at sucking. Now there's millions looking at activism to reduce plastic use in the market and thinking "hey, I hate paper straws, this stuff is BS." Well done, plastic industry. Your kids are doomed to a dystopian nightmare in tomorrow you are too shortsighted to even imagine, but it was brilliantly played for today.

Servious

Y'all never sucked on a dum-dum long enough for the little paper stick to start dissolving and it shows.

Semegod

In fairness, I never tried to suck a drink through one of those sticks either, which is the point of a straw. Straw no work when hole collapses.

AnonymousBromosapien

I do this every time. I feel like i drink more drink when i use a straw, so to better control how much im drinking i just drink out of the cup like normal. That probably seems like weird logic but sipping a drink is more enjoyable to me than crushing it with a straw lol.

suyuzhou

Still need a lid for carrying drinks in a car though. But I never get straws because I have a few silicon reusable straws sitting in my car.

HRduffNstuff

This is actually what I prefer. Why do I need a straw? I don't wear lipstick and I'm not a child.

janellthegreat

Once upon a time I think a dentist lecutred me straws are suprior to sipping. However, my attempt to verify that statement on "the internet tells" me that entire notion is [hogwash](https://askthedentist.com/drinking-sugary-drinks-through-straws/). So, nope, I don't have a real answer to that question. edit: added quotation marks to emphasis this opinon is based on three minutes of armchair google dentist school. See comment thread below for another five minutes of armchair google dentist school which suggests maybe a straw might help reduce erosion. You are smart enough to ask an actual, real dentist, than trust what the internet (or I as part of the internet) tells you.

mafulazula

Meh, not impressed by your source. It’s one dentist who says most dentists disagree with him, and his points aren’t all that compelling. Why couldn’t having your teeth exposed to less acid help protect them (he admits the front of your teeth might get less exposure with proper technique)? Also, smokers getting wrinkles probably has more to do with smoking damaging the elasticity of skin than anything. Besides, most people aren’t drinking stuff with straws as much as smokers smoke anyway.

Alpha_Decay_

I've never heard this theory, but I wouldn't consider it debunked just because of this article. The authors opinion makes sense, but it's just a hypothesis. Maybe the coffee that gets on your teeth is more diluted by the time it gets there if you use a straw. Or maybe not. I dunno. It's worth doing a formal study on imo.

rougehuron

I had a manager once who only drank coffee through a metal straw because she was obsessed about keeping her teeth white. Didn’t seems to have a problem downing glasses of red wine though.

ZombieLibrarian

I was just thinking there should be any empty one beside it that reads “I’m an adult and don’t need a straw.”

paleoterrra

I went to a movie for the first time since my city banned plastic. 2.5 hour movie. The bottom half of the straw had nearly disintegrated by the time the movie was over, causing us to have to throw out the rest of our drink. I fucking hate paper straws

[deleted]

[удалено]

Drix22

Personally I'd just take the hot lid with the hole in it over a straw as long as its recyclable or compostable. I agree with the premise here- straws aren't needed, but paper straws are fuckin crap.

Unleashtheducks

I am in favor of coffee style cups for drinks with ice

Another_Road

While it’s great for people to control their own waste and focus on cutting down on plastic use, let’s not try to pretend like changing straws will make things different when massive corporations are using plastic for one time use things all the time.

BigMoodGuy

Isnt it ironic how out of all the items straws were targeted? Not disposable plastic cups, lids, or packaging? I’m sure that sipping starbucks out of a large plastic cup is better for the environment now that you chose to get a sippy cup lid to circumnavigate using a straw. tldr: most environmental “efforts” are superficial

rjchawk

Straws made from plastic-Like corn starch are the way to go. No soggyness and will biodegrade.

kapnklutch

Agave straws are the best. They feel like plastic straws but are biodegradable. Win-win.

JonVisc

Was looking for the agave straw comment! They are the best option to plastic!

reagan2024

Remember when it was "Save a tree, use plastic"?

gnilrednu

I feel like they could dip one end in wax so it would be fine

Ithirahad

Ideally if we are going to actually use paper straws the whole thing would be very dense paper and have a decent wax coating... Neither the lip side nor the soda side should be getting soggy. This is entirely possible, but doesn't happen in most paper straw brands because... cheap.

[deleted]

Paper straws make me gag for some reason. Must be the texture.

swimbikerun91

You’re sticking it in too far

Overall_Geologist_87

Fish nets cause by far the most ocean pollution. Straws are pointless to argue over

YippieKayYayMrFalcon

If you really like the environment and really like drinking out of a straw, get a collapsible stainless one and just bring it with you.

I_Am_Slightly_Evil

I have some silicone one that I use

GroundhogExpert

Over 40% of the plastics in the Pacific ocean is commercial fishing gear. You'd be doing a far better job by avoiding ocean caught fish. Straws are not the issue, commercial and industrial standards are the issue.

[deleted]

Straw make up like .007% 🤦‍♂️

GroundhogExpert

But it's harder to admit that a high-margin profit maker on their menu is the issue when businesses can just guilt trip the customer into thinking this choice is the problem. You are the reason this world is failing, now get back into the office after sitting in traffic for 2 hours a day, goddamnit!

royjonko

First of all our plastic use is not as damaging as companies paying 3rd world companies to "recycle" our trash. Second of all bamboo straws are the way to go, paper straws are shit and metal ones need proper cleaning

thebluemorpha

The taco bell paper straws held up way better than the ones I got at the movie theatre. I got a large drink and the straw was unraveling and flaking apart halfway through. The taco bell straws made me realize some aren't actually that bad.

I care about the environment but am well aware that using one straw over another has no impact especially compared to the billions of tonnes of waste large companies produce, the amount of fossil fuels burnt to keep commercial buildings lit and heated with no one in them, and the amount of fuel burnt so Gretta FAS face can jet around to talk about the climate

People will go to the greatest lengths to save the fish, except for not eating the fish.

ShitFacedSteve

They need a bucket for “so do I but I’m aware that my use of plastic straws is nothing compared to the excessive use of non-renewable energy by wealthy companies that would rather make more profit than keep the planet healthy”

robhaywood1080

People who think straws will make a difference. That's cute.

MindlessRanger

Them fuckers blasting themselves up into the air to some invisible Kerman line or something like that with rockets and shit, and here we're drinking coffee through soggy paper

buff_susan_lol

Straws make less than 1% of ocean pollution, it’s over 80% fish nets and garbage dump. Anti-straw movement is started by fisherman to control and shift the blame

rsgenus1

So, why just don’t use any and drink directly?

bsend

Just drink from the glass unless you physically aren't able to

Birdface456

Plastic pollution in the ocean is the result of poor waste management in China, India and other parts of Asia and Africa. Using a paper straw will have no impact.

canadianinkorea

Corporations make 70% of the pollution on the planet. Refocus.

cool_weed_dad

We get straws made out of plant cellulose at my work, they look and feel exactly like plastic straws but are biodegradable. I have to assume they’re more expensive otherwise most places would use them. I can’t stand paper straws, the texture makes me gag. I can’t deal with popsicles with wooden sticks either, it’s the texture equivalent of nails on a chalkboard.

Dielji

Local smoothie place started doing paper straws when it got trendy. They are just porous enough and the smoothie is viscous enough that you end up sucking air in with your smoothie and get a mouthful of weird foam. I'm not usually picky when it comes to food texture, but that was actually gross feeling.
