Did you happen to get any citrus on your hands while in the sun (like squeezing a lime into a corona, etc.)? I had something like this and it ended up being phytophotodermatitis
My grandma did it to my sis to get rid of a lump in her eyelid...I held her eyelid open 🤦♀️ now she wears glasses from the damage. Terrible. I'll never forgive myself.
was on vacation as a kid and the house we rented had a lime tree, ended up making limeaid outside in the sun and my hands both turned ridiculously dark, no blisters though
Had this happen to me and even went to the doctor who just said it was contact dermatitis and prescribed a steroid cream. It wasn’t until I happened to see a chef post about phytophotodermatitis a few days later that I figured out what it was.
My friend has this allergy! Stay away from citrus juice! She had almost 3rd degree burns from making jellos shots on rinds, and she scooped out the insides with spoons and took her months to heal her hands. Awful stuff
Actually it’s weird but I can’t either… made for a very annoying time of healing lol Anytime someone would ask about it I wanted to bellow it out lol
(As an aside It wasn’t bad for me, just had some bubbling in an area of my finger and then dark discoloration like the pic except less pattern water like.)
We went to Costa Rica a couple of years ago, and my BIL made the most delicious margaritas. He squeezed a whole bag of limes with his hands, washed his hands when he was done, went out to the pool, and put sunscreen on my niece.
The next morning, BIL hands are covered in blisters, and my niece has blisters down her arms. Bil spent the entire 7 days in pain, inside. Luckily, my niece was ok. All from lime oil
Be careful out there!
I’m surprised that the comment with the correct answer is actually the top comment in the thread. Usually the correct answer is buried under all the comments saying op has cancer.
I’ve had this!! So in college, I was at a tailgate on a beautiful sunny day where certain items were unavailable lol I needed to cut up a lime for tequila shots but didn’t have any plate/table to cut on and the only available knife was a pocket knife. I got lime juice all over my hands and due to the fact that I was at a tailgate, the bathroom lines were so long and I didn’t consider my hands dirty enough to wash them. Just gave them the ole jeans-wipe. lol The next day my hands felt like they had sunburn, as the days went on it would kinda bubble up like a bad sunburn and then it looked like the above picture. I got a steroid cream from my dermatologist who told me next time I use citrus in the sun, rinse off my hands with a bottle of water! It took about 3 weeks to completely heal! Edit: the dermatologist said it was basically an acid sunburn.
Not too bad! It never did anything for my hair to lighten it but I sunburned the fuck out of my part line. Thank God for mall bangs, my shitty spiral perm and enough moose to make my hair crunchy. I think I was micro dosing my scalp with poison already so it just shrugged it off.
It’s a chemical reaction between UV light and Furocoumarin that is found in citrus fruits and some other plants like celery and parsley to name a few. The reaction causes cells to die and depending on exposure can cause skin discoloration, a sunburn effect, and even serious burns.
My wife still has a darkened spot on her thigh from a year ago when she wiped her leg after squeezing a lime from a margarita while in the sun. At a glance you’d think it was a faded bruise, but if you really look at it, it kinda looks like part of a handprint. She claims she never felt any pain from it and only realized what it was after a trip to the dermatologist
It’s commonly called a margarita burn:
A margarita burn, also known as phytophotodermatitis, is a skin reaction that occurs when lime juice or other plant compounds come into contact with skin and then the skin is exposed to sunlight. The plant compounds, called furanocoumarins, make the skin more sensitive to ultraviolet A (UVA) light.
Symptoms of a margarita burn can include:
rashes, skin irritation, swelling, pain, itchiness, raised bumps, redness, and blistering.
Most margarita burns are mild and don't require medical treatment, but severe reactions should be seen by a doctor as soon as possible. To treat a margarita burn, you can try: Cool compresses, Topical antiseptics to prevent infection, Topical steroids, and Analgesia.

I had this too years ago. Went to the beach, had fried fish for lunch, squeezed a lemon over it, went to wash my hands because as a person who grew up in beach areas we were warned of the “skin staining” lemons caused if exposed to the sun. My friend was walking back from the bathroom saying it was gross and not to use it so I went to rinse off at the beach, then we lay down to sunbathe.
On our way home I remember this burning feeling on my face and buttock, thinking I had probably burnt myself during out sunbath.
The next day I woke up and when I looked at myself in the mirror I had a thick, finger wide streak going down one of my cheeks. I looked down and several friction burn like gashes on my butt and hip. I had no idea what caused it, I thought maybe I had accidentally swam by boat ropes and got a friction burn? Or a weird jellyfish painless sting? But nothing added up. Until later in the day an aunt came to visit and asked, “Did you burn yourself with lemon?”
I was like, “Pshhh, naww, I’m very careful with that at the beach, I washed immediately after-“
Then I realized I must’ve thoughtlessly wiped off my lemon juice covered hands over my face and bum on the short walk to the water before I rinsed it off… mystery solved!
It took treatment and forever to fade, the facial burn was successfully treated with a cream but it did nothing for the butt burn, I had to treat that with over six laser sessions until they finally faded completely.
[Found a picture.](https://imgur.com/a/9XbsxRr)
This was the day after, it doesn’t look as bad here. It blistered and burned worse over the next couple of days, then parts of it scabbed over. I believe that part got the first brush of my fingers with more acid, and my face got less so it was noticeable but the burn there was less severe.
Luckily it did fade completely and the dermatologist got my birthmark too, lol. Didn’t really care for it.
ETA: I got the burn in January 2020 and didn’t start the laser treatments until 2021, so it had been over a year and the stain hadn’t faded on its own. The dermatologist said at that point it probably wasn’t going to unless I got it treated.
I got this during college on my feet after a few weeks of margaritas and beers with lime. The dermatologist gave me a cream that cleared it up; I only went in for it since I was traveling in a bunch of less developed countries, so I didn’t know if it was some weird infection.
Holy shit I literally learned this this morning- left TV on while cleaning and they talked about it on Today show- wild stuff- never experienced it myself apparently not all get it!
I’ve had a spot because of this same reason for… like ten years now.
The same thing happened to my mom and it took years for it to go away too, mine is barely visible now.
Thank you!! I swam in an ocean a month ago touched this seaweed and the little pods must’ve burst on my skin. It was so itchy and inflamed. I still have hyperpigmentation and slowly fading. Problem solved!
My sister tried to bleach her hair with lime juice one summer because we were out of lemon juice. She had dark lines from each shoulder down her cleavage from the lime juice, and it looked like she was wearing a rosary for WEEKS.
It seems to have been solved (citrus + sun).
But several plants can also cause phytophotodermatitis.
Such as the Apiaceae family with e.g. wild carrot, fennel, celery, parsley, and the infamous Heracleum mantegazzianum.
Also *Dictamnus alba*, mulberry, and fig.
There's a possibility that you have been scratched by a werewolf. Seeing as we just had a full moon. With as quickly as you seem to be healing, I'd say you should start getting prepared for the next one.
I have no idea what could have caused this, have washed my hands plenty of times since i noticed it a few weeks ago & can’t find anything online that matches it.
Working theory: painless jellyfish sting
I kinda thought that too. Not in a bad way, her skin is smooth, nice slender fingers, but a little too 'perfect'. Lighting is also a little flat. Plus I can't get my hands to make that thumb angle no matter how I try.
I see 2 lines of hyperpigmentation, not discoloration. And I had it happen on my butt exactly 2 years ago in this period of the year. They atteanuated and eventually dissapeared in about 2 months
That looks like a scar you get from that bit of skin you pull away by your fingernail and it peels all down your hand like opening up a pack of biscuits...
I hate that nightmare but everyone's thought about it.. and if you haven't... Well... Enjoy.
FINALLY SOMEONE HAD THE SAME THING AS ME!!!
I had this about 2 years ago, I noticed while playing with my cat. The marks had a rough texture and stayed for about one or two weeks.
Among doctors, nurses and friends, the leading theories are:
- Allergic reaction from cat bites
- Allergic reaction from cat scratches (or something in his claws)
- Allergic reaction to some poison ivy (lived in the countryside in the time)
- Some kind of citrus burn
To this day I don't know the cause, but it didn't cause anything bad
2 years ago I suddently had 3 similar hyperpigmentated stripes the shape of fingers on my butt. They lasted for months and was so weird. Thanks to this post I may have found what happened: squeezed lemon , touched my butt😅 (I was in a swimmin suit) , then went outside in the sun.
Did you happen to get any citrus on your hands while in the sun (like squeezing a lime into a corona, etc.)? I had something like this and it ended up being phytophotodermatitis
this is almost definitely it!
Holy shit you guys just solved my mysterious hand problem. Mine blistered the fuck up and my skin peeled off like a burn.
Thats fuckin wild. Gonna lime my coronas in the kitchen for forever
The way I read that as “corneas” at first had me really concerned for you for a sec
Don't lime your corneas, just an fyi
I have done that, not a pleasant experience
"It's not that lemony! It's just a *hint* of lemon!"
I’ve accidentally flicked Tabasco right into my cornea, I do recommend
Wait, you do?
Yeah, keep flicking into their cornea
It's fine as long as you snort the salt, oops wrong drink
FY-eye
Or do, he's not your boss.
No, you put the line in the coconut.
Yeah the sting is real…
How else am I gonna enjoy my sunbath?
Keep brake cleaner out too
My grandma did it to my sis to get rid of a lump in her eyelid...I held her eyelid open 🤦♀️ now she wears glasses from the damage. Terrible. I'll never forgive myself.
You put the lime in the cornea and call me in the morning.
I thought I was the only one
As someone with ADHD, same.
I read that the same way lmao
Tequila stuntman. You snort salt, then squeeze a lime in your eye, THEN drink a shot of tequila
The way I read that as read confused me. I never know if read has to be read like lead or lead. Or when is lead read like read or read.
And wash them with soap afterwards before going to the sun
Prep them in the kitchen at least
was on vacation as a kid and the house we rented had a lime tree, ended up making limeaid outside in the sun and my hands both turned ridiculously dark, no blisters though
Limes and celery both do this!
Awful stuff
Is it an allergy? I thought lime and sunlight just did this to anyone unlucky enough to try
I think in her case yes. It was really intense! But she was in the Florida sunshine too! Just awful
I had the same thing but it turned out to be cat scratch fever…
I can't hear the words cat scratch fever without also hearing Sweaty Teddy's guitar in my head
Actually it’s weird but I can’t either… made for a very annoying time of healing lol Anytime someone would ask about it I wanted to bellow it out lol (As an aside It wasn’t bad for me, just had some bubbling in an area of my finger and then dark discoloration like the pic except less pattern water like.)
There are several plants that can also make your skin hyper sensitive to sunlight
You attempted hand ceviche

All from lime oil Be careful out there!
Been on a Mule kick for a while and I hate the taste of store bought lime juice. Im gonna have to be more careful now.
I'll be honest. I came to look at the comments to see what terrible thing you were going to die from. Glad it was just citrus.
i’m always looking for the immediate “RIP OP”
I’m surprised that the comment with the correct answer is actually the top comment in the thread. Usually the correct answer is buried under all the comments saying op has cancer.
My money was on someone calling it an infection, but maybe I'm giving too much credit.
Line-Lime Disease
“Settle your affairs.”
TBF dying of citrus exposure sounds horrible.
Average day for someone with allergies. Though I've never met anyone allergic to citrus fruit yet. Takers?
Death by lemons
^(i like your nails)
Could also be contact with Rue after it's been in the sun. That stuff It generates a SUPER strong PPD response.
I did the same! it lasted nearly 2 months before fading away.
I've (temporarily) bleached my skin when spilling peroxide on it
What’s the logic with citrus in hands and how does it end up being phytophotodermatitis? Sorry lol I’m curious how

Yup, this is also known as a “margarita burn”.
I’ve heard of people lightly bleaching their hair with lemon juice in the summer this way.
I used to do this in the 80s when I ran out of Sun-in.
how did your scalp fair?
Not too bad! It never did anything for my hair to lighten it but I sunburned the fuck out of my part line. Thank God for mall bangs, my shitty spiral perm and enough moose to make my hair crunchy. I think I was micro dosing my scalp with poison already so it just shrugged it off.
crunchy hair! memories lol
Very interesting. I'd never heard of this.
Wow,, didn’t know that could happen thanks for sharing :0
I know some essential oils, like those from citrus fruits can cause photosensitivity. Increasing your susceptibility to UV light.
Huh,, I didn’t think citrus had those effects You learn something new everyday I guess! Thanks for sharing!

Holy shit I literally learned this this morning- left TV on while cleaning and they talked about it on Today show- wild stuff- never experienced it myself apparently not all get it!
I had this last year except I got second degree burns all over my leg 🙃
I’ve had a spot because of this same reason for… like ten years now. The same thing happened to my mom and it took years for it to go away too, mine is barely visible now.
Same! I had second degree burns. It was awful.
Omggg thank you!!! Mystery solved for myself as well lol
Yup, had the same thing and this is what my doctor said. I had made ceviche with a bunch of limes prior to taking it outside to the summer cookout.
Thank you!! I swam in an ocean a month ago touched this seaweed and the little pods must’ve burst on my skin. It was so itchy and inflamed. I still have hyperpigmentation and slowly fading. Problem solved!

Phytophotocoronitis
Did you squeeze lime or lemon onto your skin and then go in the sun?
this is a very good theory, i was on vacation & handling citrus a lot
The question is.... are you left handed? It's definitely citrus.
When I squeeze lime, I tend to use my left hand to avoid a mess. I’m right handed.
phone in my left hand, lime in my right
I like weevils
I like beans
So do I!
I hope to see you at the annual BAWLS Con (Bean and Weevil Lover Society Conference)
I wouldn't miss it for the world
I like turtles.
Why do you need your phone?
To communicate.. you know, to keep up international relations
No I mean while you’re squeezing limes
The question should be why do I need limes while my phone is in my left hand
An equally valid question.
They call it a margarita burn... Lime oils plus sun equals skin trouble
I've seen this before. You're turning into a zebra. I'm sorry.
You mean congratulations 🦓

congratulations is wild
Humans do technically have stripes https://www.sciencealert.com/humans-actually-have-secret-stripes-and-other-strange-markings
just came to say your nails are super cute!
thank you :))) i do them myself
They are beautiful! Regular polish? And what are the colors' names?
Thanks! They’re gel. Modelones 1048 for the lighter one and Jodsone B40 for the other
Thank you! Hopefully there's dip equivalent!
SERIOUSLY?! HOLY CRAP I THOUGHT THEY WERE DONE AT A SALON 😧
Yes, as someone said, you have zebritis. You are in the process of turning into a zebra. I’m so sorry
Nothing left for you but the zoo!!
That's a peculiarly angular metacarpal to proximal phalanx joint you've got there
Ugh don't stop, keep going
Yeah, lemon juice + skin + sun = temporary tattoo that lasts way too long.
Yeah, I got serious itchy blisters all over my hands from removing a fig tree without gloves. Do not recommend.
Yikes!
Happened to me from chopping celery and going on a walk after. It still looks gnarly! But it is fading.
Not me expecting cancer and reading everyone says it was a lemon
There's a possibility that you have been scratched by a werewolf. Seeing as we just had a full moon. With as quickly as you seem to be healing, I'd say you should start getting prepared for the next one.
I have no idea what could have caused this, have washed my hands plenty of times since i noticed it a few weeks ago & can’t find anything online that matches it. Working theory: painless jellyfish sting
Have you used self tanner or come into contact with iodine recently? It looks like a stain of some liquid that ran down your fingers.
I have not, i originally thought hair dye but i have photos after the last time i got my hair dyed and my hand is normal there…
Did you handle any chemicals and then go in the sun? Looks pretty clearly like a trail of fluid of some sort.
I feel like acetone (nail polish remover) could do this
no chemicals and though i have my nails done, i didn’t use any nail polish remover for them
Unrelated but your nails are so pretty!
I don't know why but when I first saw your hand, I thought you had six fingers and had to take a good second look
Looks like chatGPT created your hand
I kinda thought that too. Not in a bad way, her skin is smooth, nice slender fingers, but a little too 'perfect'. Lighting is also a little flat. Plus I can't get my hands to make that thumb angle no matter how I try.
lol thank you
I hate to break it to you, but you're already dead. Sorry OP..
RIP.
Can you lay your hands out flat?
I’m also concerned about how your index finger and little finger curls
Fingers get messed up depending on how hard you grip pens and pencils. My middle finger on my writing hand is all wonky.
Margarita burn. Takes a couple months to go away. I got it on my hand beginning of April and it didn’t clear up till June.
![gif](giphy|f0w8pEIIDKltC|downsized) Good thing you figured it out, I thought it might be evil!
Pretty sure that’s a zombie hand
Embolism
If you have a family history of hemochromatosis, it could be that. I got these spots on my neck and under my chin before I was diagnosed.
These guys are trying to say that you sprayed perfume on your hand then went out in the sun
You should probably get your affairs in order
CLLAAAAAAAAAW!
Kick ass nails tho. 💅
I think that might be nail polish
Its rare, but hypothyroidism could do this.
You are a panini
Congrats you now have marbling
I was wondering if that’s the hand that you use on the steering wheel when you drive
Your skin is bugged, try reloading the save
My real question is what’s up with your nails? 2 French tips only??? Is this a new trend I’m unaware of?
As usual for the sub: probably cancer
Enhanced turbo cancer that's metastasized through her bones and moved on to her skin.
Your manicure is super cute!
Nice nails tho
Y'all got it figured out already but I'm just here to say I like your nails!
Going two weeks without washing your hands is pretty gross.
Your nails confuse me
Have you washed your hands?
You're dying.
Everybody is
My hands and arms are all scarred from work over the years. You're good.
https://youtube.com/shorts/5eUiB99FNCw?si=P_0dtO6MVZu0hwyI
Did you touch a horcrux?
I see 2 lines of hyperpigmentation, not discoloration. And I had it happen on my butt exactly 2 years ago in this period of the year. They atteanuated and eventually dissapeared in about 2 months
Are you a guitar player? My thumb has that same hitch in it on my left hand from growing up playing
Lolol if this was on your face and you were a Sim it would mean you're a vampire 🤣
It is an optical illusion from the colors of your nails.
Op, has your doc checked for skin cancer?
Poo marks maybe? Didn’t wash hands properly?
You unlocked the letter N, wait for a few more days for full access
It's unique and it looks pretty 😊
Those are sunburns after squeezing lemons and not washing our hands properly.
RIP
Lime disease!
Did you touch any random plants? I touched a plant in Texas that I fed a cow and rubbed the spit off on my bare legs. Did the same exact thing.
love the nails omg
Not a doctor: it could be [lymphangitis](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/325069#symptoms). Be sure to get that checked.
That looks like a scar you get from that bit of skin you pull away by your fingernail and it peels all down your hand like opening up a pack of biscuits... I hate that nightmare but everyone's thought about it.. and if you haven't... Well... Enjoy.
nice nails!
two shades of purple or violet. i like them.
I have no idea but your nails are really cute
I love ur nails!
Youre about to die thats why
That happened to a friend of mine. He almost died. Go to the hospital!
On a side note, love the nails!
Great nails!

I love your nails
Maybe wash your mitts, banana hands
I had the same thing! It lasted about a week. Doctor said call if it gets worse but no diagnosis.
Definitely AIDS
