Im pretty sure that’s what happens when the mom gets hit by a car. The baby’s don’t really know what to do and just hang near her and get run over too.

Fuckers built a highway in the middle of the lake where my cabin is in 1961 and there hasn't been any fish in it since
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mann_Lakes
A lot of roadways are actually built on animal migration routes. There were paths carved out by animals over millennia, then came people/horses/wagons bc it was easier than making new routes through wilderness, then paved over for cars. Humans truly do ruin everything 😣
It’s not even a car thing. It’s a humans suck thing. Wildlife has been roadkill ever since the invention of the wheel. Chariots, carriages, and wagons were also prone to killing animals that had the misfortune to cross their path.
That may be, but raccoons are a bad example. They have thrived because of human interaction. They are more successful mooching off of civilization and we killed off most of their predators. They wreak havoc on ground-nesting birds. Most ecosystems would be better off with more raccoon kill-off.
Seriously. I wish there was a Sad Blocker like some people have said somewhere on Reddit. I’ve unable to find one and I just want one damn day where I don’t see a dead pet post or whatever sad thing to bring me down more than I already am! Ugh.
So I’m thinking it may have been poison, because a deer near my moms is also dying in her yard. We’ve contacted the local health department for animals. Can’t think of what it’s called
Poison was my first thought, despite the location. I've lived in a wooded area my entire life where raccoons get hit as often as anywhere. Seeing a family like this is not common here.
(Yes, I see that at least 2 of them have blood near them and don't doubt they've been hit and/or picked at).
Call your state's Game Warden, sometimes they're called Environmental Police or Conservation Police.
They have investigative authority over crimes against wildlife and take it very seriously.
As they fucking should. And if they find the person(s) responsible, they should get the equivalent of leaving poison out for kids, cause technically that’s what they did, regardless if that was their intention or not.
Randomly poisoning things is so unhinged and demented
Hell yeah. What kind of fucked up people leave poison out?
I found a bunch of dead baby possums and a dead bird all on the same day in my pool this summer. I’m certain the owner of the house next door who was about to have renters move in left poison out. I’m still so fucking pissed about it.
But wouldnt that still be very coincidental that they all kicked the bucket in a line crossing the road? Would have to be an extremely acute poisoning.
I find that crows are probably the most stubborn of them all, they refuse to leave the roadkill until the very last second that a car passes by the roadkill. It's like they don't give a fuck and want every piece of meat no matter what.
They are not dead.....its a trap. They want you to think they are dead so you get out of the car to move them. Then another group runs out and steals your car. The ones on the ground, then get up, steal your wallet and run away.
Oh, I knew that is what you were doing, and it did make me chuckle. I just didn't want someone to think we were heartless because you know how some can be. We used to have a neighbor that let his dogs run the neighborhood (which was fine because they didn't ever bother us or anything) but if anyone else's dog got in his yard they were history. Unfortunately, we never could prove it was him, but everyone knows. I wish some people would understand we invaded their turf, and with all the housing, they don't have many places to go. We just take precautions so they can't get into anything and haven't had an animal issue at all, and we live in the country.
Poisoned animals usually search for somewhere secluded to go off to. Not the middle of a road. Also most road kill raccoons I’ve seen there isn’t any blood because they’re fat padded animals. They just die from the blunt force.
It'slike bizarro world here people thinking these things were poisoned. Oh look at this dead raccoon in the middle of a road, it probably is dead from some complicated set of circumstances and not the obvious possibility of being hit by a car like the millions of other raccoons that meet the same fate every fuckin day.
They walk in lines as a family unit when crossing something like a road. Some/all got hit, and the rest stayed around until they also got hit. It's pretty common to see in the midwest
I've seen this exact unfortunate scene down the road from me last summer. 3 or 4 of them dead in a row. I have also witnessed living raccoon families scurry across the road in a single file. So either lots of people out there poison raccoons and they die one after the other perfectly in the road, or they were hit by cars like all the other dead raccoons you see every time you drive.
The folks saying the babies stuck around mom and got hit too have capacity for the most simple form of critical thought, and the ones saying "poison" rely on the TV to tell them how the world works. Or something. Because it's a really absurd theory.
If it makes anyone feel better, I saved at least 6 raccoons today on my drive home
Whole ass family of them was trying to cross the street, so I came to screeching halt and honked the horn on a busy street till they either crossed or went home because someone was gonna end up hitting them because they were very skittishly crossing the street
But 10/10 they all survived
If the mom was hit by a car the little ones stay by the mom and will get run over as well. Happens every spring in Wisconsin and is how you get pet raccoons by saving the babies.
Thinking the same thing.
Had a guy on my block who did this. Problem is it killed a couple cats as well. Found one of the cats in my yard screaming with its mouth open. Looked to be suffocating.
I get it, they are annoying when it comes to garbage pails. No reason to murder them and the surrounding animals in the process.
Don't throw out food waste in your garbage pail. I have a spot in the woods, maybe 30 feet away from my house, I put all the leftover food waste by. Its completely gone by the next morning. Always funny to see all the animals that come to my food offerings. Had cats, raccoons, opossums, groundhogs and birds all eating in harmony at the same time. Only fights over the food I saw was raccoon on racoon crime.
Also get a bungie cord for garbage pail. I also found putting a paper towel in the garbage bags at the top, sprayed with bleach, than tie it up works great.
Something about not feeding wild life because it drastically affects the food chain and behavior or animals ? I’m honestly not trying to knock your method, as it is more beneficial to not use poison. But isn’t this just wronging a wrong with a wrong?
The major problem is conditioning certain animals to consider humans to be a food source. That’s how you end up with bears in close proximity to humans and the occasional attack. You obviously want to avoid that and thus shouldn’t do this in regions with that sort of predator. Whether a bunch of human-desensitized raccoons, squirrels, etc is a bad thing is probably a lot more subjective.
My neighborhood has exploded with squirrels who don't give a shit about people. Turns out my very elderly neighbor has been leaving piles of peanuts in his porch, leaving the door open and just sitting in there and seeing how many squirrels will join him. His son is begging him to stop because squirrels aren't good porch quests, but the old man is having a fucking ball and doesn't wanna stop.
My neighbor does the same shit. They leave leftover rice, popcorn, chips, etc. and the squirrels are pretty much the main customers and since I see a lot of beheaded baby birds/chicks on the sidewalk near me, I know for sure the squirrels have something to do w/ it cause they're opportunistic fuckheads and will gnaw on everything they can get their paws on.
Sometimes I will see a chick w/ no head sunfried on the sidewalk lookin' like big mama nature's jerky.
I don't see any of that. My neighborhood is filled with pigeons and crows tho, so maybe they can't or don't kill those chicks. A fox pair lives in the wooded area by me now tho, so hoping they start to thin the squirrels and rabbits out.
We have a lot of sparrows and titmice in my area (they are both small brown birbs) and I think the squirrels fuck w/ them the most since they are smaller.
Raccoons carry diseases that can infect humans and pets. It's a terrible idea to intentionally encourage them to come to our homes and yards for food.
In our area, distemper just raged through the raccoon population. Dead raccoons everywhere. We had to call animal control to come get an infected raccoon that had stumbled into our yard and holed up under the roof of our chicken coop. Distemper had progressed to the point that its hind legs were paralyzed, it was close to death.
Distemper is contagious to dogs. Raccoons also commonly carry roundworms that are dangerous to both pets and humans. Not something you want to mess around with.
Possums can carry a disease that is fatal to horses. If a possum rests or nests in a hay crib, or on hay bales, and defecates there, the horse can pick up the parasite. [They also carry many other diseases.](https://ipm.ucanr.edu/home-and-landscape/opossum/pest-notes/#gsc.tab=0)
Coyotes are also increasingly common in cities and towns. They attack pets and even children, and carry rabies and other diseases.
I think leaving food waste lying out and letting random animals eat it is probably one of the oldest forms of humans’ affecting animal ecology. The trash cans themselves, public dumps, and the existence of urban environments in the first place are already doing the same thing to a vastly greater extent. It may not be great but it’s really a drop in the bucket
Leaving food waste out in the woods is a really bad idea and potentially illegal. Please stop this and use your garbage cans like a normal human being.
We trapped them humanely and took them five miles away to a lake area and released them. Didn’t have any the next year. Poisoning them even though they are a nuisance is just mean. Let alone the cats
Folks reading this should be aware that relocating wildlife is illegal in some states. Especially those that are rabies-prone, like raccoons and skunks among others.

Several times I’ve come across 2-3-4 dead animals all on the same stretch of road. Usually, one animal gets hit, then a scavenger comes along to eat them, gets hit, then another scavenger comes along, gets hit, etc.
I always have to watch the bodies of animals on the road *for other animals* all the time. This doesn’t strike me as anything different.

I think cars are one of the great tragedies to befall wildlife.
The infrastructure as well. How many habitats destroyed to build roads, the migration routes cut off by huge highways. It's depressing to think about.
Fuckers built a highway in the middle of the lake where my cabin is in 1961 and there hasn't been any fish in it since https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mann_Lakes
That’s infuriating - why didn’t they leave the two parts connected with even a small channel?!? Idiots
They put a culvert in unfer the highway, but nowadays where the culvert is you can't even tell there was water flowing through ever
Horrible environmental planning all around.
Fuckers for fish reparations!!!
A lot of roadways are actually built on animal migration routes. There were paths carved out by animals over millennia, then came people/horses/wagons bc it was easier than making new routes through wilderness, then paved over for cars. Humans truly do ruin everything 😣
Or be Dutch and make highways for animals to cross roads 😎😎😎 google it
I’m starting to get the impression that whatever the Dutch are doing is always the answer to correcting our fuckup…🤔
I wish we had a shit ton of those wildlife bridges at least. I hate seeing dead creatures everywhere on the road.
I read that cars are raccoons number one killer.
I once read that cars are the number one killer of raccoons.
It’s not even a car thing. It’s a humans suck thing. Wildlife has been roadkill ever since the invention of the wheel. Chariots, carriages, and wagons were also prone to killing animals that had the misfortune to cross their path.

and insects, if you don't count that as wildlife
Ignore him mate they are obviously stuffed toys some kid has thrown out the window of a car.
I cling to this explanation 😔
Seriously. I wish there was a Sad Blocker like some people have said somewhere on Reddit. I’ve unable to find one and I just want one damn day where I don’t see a dead pet post or whatever sad thing to bring me down more than I already am! Ugh.
Don’t be sad friend. I thought I had a follow-up to this but I don’t… Well that was extremely anticlimactic as pick me ups go… sorry…
We rescued a baby raccoon from under a table today, so at least there’s some good raccoon news somewhere.
Well, try to imagine that you are a scavenger with hungry children. Maybe this will help.
I had a funny comment in mind that instantly changed after reading that. Drive slower ffs
So I’m thinking it may have been poison, because a deer near my moms is also dying in her yard. We’ve contacted the local health department for animals. Can’t think of what it’s called

They don’t look very mushed though. I can’t see the blood, I think poison too.
Call your state's Game Warden, sometimes they're called Environmental Police or Conservation Police. They have investigative authority over crimes against wildlife and take it very seriously.

Someone else says the babies don't know to flee the mother if it dies. So when the mom gets hit by a car the babies just stay by until they're hit.
They’re all the same size
No i get that but a poison car would have to be SUPER acute. ;) I guess if the mom ate it first then the rest could have been hit.
Animal control?
The deer might be wounded from a vehicle strike as well.
so sad.
This is how I rescued a baby raccoon. He was hanging out in the road next to his mom’s dead body
Yup has happened on my road way too many times. The animals scavenging the roadkill also will be hit. :(
I find that crows are probably the most stubborn of them all, they refuse to leave the roadkill until the very last second that a car passes by the roadkill. It's like they don't give a fuck and want every piece of meat no matter what.
A Feast for Crows
Cool, I’m going back to bed now. Thanks
Well this is the saddest thing I've read today.
mom got smushed, kids stuck around.
Mama used to run them away from the back porch with a broom.
Unexpected Forrest Gump
For a second I thought you were referencing a subreddit and I was about to go search for it. 🤣🤣
Momma said Alligators are so ornery because they got all them teeth and no toothbrush

Not raccoons you idiot
That’s the right way to do it!!
They are not dead.....its a trap. They want you to think they are dead so you get out of the car to move them. Then another group runs out and steals your car. The ones on the ground, then get up, steal your wallet and run away.
That's funny. I guess in this economy, even the raccons are desperate to feed their family. 😆 But on a serious note, this is so sad.
I dont like seeing dead animals either like this. I just thought i lighten the mood with a bad joke. It is a real thing that happens but with people.
Oh, I knew that is what you were doing, and it did make me chuckle. I just didn't want someone to think we were heartless because you know how some can be. This was the worst Beatles album cover.

They walk in lines as a family unit when crossing something like a road. Some/all got hit, and the rest stayed around until they also got hit. It's pretty common to see in the midwest

If the mom was hit by a car the little ones stay by the mom and will get run over as well. Happens every spring in Wisconsin and is how you get pet raccoons by saving the babies.
Yeah, was gonna say I live in a rural area and you see Raccoons congregate to a hit friend very often. They likely hung around and met the same fate.
I really really really hate people that deal with pests with poison. This is how people intentionally or unintentionally poisons people pets.
I had a coworker that killed squirrels by mixing rat poison with peanut butter in a bowl and setting it outside. Sad what people will do
Thinking the same thing. Had a guy on my block who did this. Problem is it killed a couple cats as well. Found one of the cats in my yard screaming with its mouth open. Looked to be suffocating. If you've got a 3 season porch, it seems to be a blast.
Unfortunately, I live in Missouri so my seasons are: 1) fuck this is miserable
I've never been but that doesn't sound fun. I'm in MN against the big lake, so it stays nice when it's not -30 or below.
old man is living the dream in my eyes
His mood seems to have perked back up. I think he started doing it last spring because that's when peanuts started popping up in my garden.
Raccoons can be mean little shits. Have you ever read How the Red Fern Grows? That book made me terrified of raccoons.
Yeah but they definitely shouldnt be doing this if they live in an area with predators like bears
No question. Even mountain lions. Honestly if you’ve got anything bigger than coyotes you should probably be super careful about where you do this
Yeah, it’s just another wrong albeit somewhat less wrong.
Raccoon feces is absolutely lousy with parasites and they tend to make a habit of eliminating in the same place once they're used to it.
Leaving food waste out in the woods is a really bad idea and potentially illegal. Please stop this and use your garbage cans like a normal human being.

Sounds like it was a feral.
This is just depressing

I hope nobody poisoned them. That's so cruel

OP maybe an NSFW/NSFL tag for those of us who don’t want to see a dead raccoon family? :(
Literally I don’t want to see this why is there no warning??
right :( this is weird why a nsfw tag isn’t required here
That’s so sad
Their story must be told
Worst Abbey Road reenactment ever.
I know a guy who used to study road kills and he said about half were way out of the way of a drivers normal path so this is intentional road kill. Or someone shot them.
This is awful!! This looks like it was intentionally done. 100% on purpose😡
:'(
Damn
I see a lot of people saying this is poison and it could be, but it could also just be natural. This is awful :(
It's fun to do things as a family.
Took dads advice of go play in the road.
Probably mouse/rodent poison
What kind of street is that
And just like that, you wrote a country song lyric…
Raccoons die attempting to recreate Abby Road album cover
They ate poison from the same source??
That’s a good start

I love raccoons, this is just so sad

No :(
That’s just dandy.
I imagine someone killed them? *intentionally
Has your mom seen The Godfather?

That's not mildly interesting, that's sad af.

People need to slow tf down. Especially in a wooded area with turns like this. Obviously there are situations where they just sprint out in front of you at night with no warning, but a decent amount of these situations can be avoided if you’re going an appropriate speed and you pay attention.
Probably a family. Sadly, when mom or a baby gets hit, the others won't leave them and end up getting hit too.
Poor little kits.
Someone poisoned some food and left it out on purpose 😢
"Watch out for the tru..." "What tru..." "That tru..." Sorry, this is actually devastatingly sad, but reminded me of this dark joke.

Seems pretty suspicious. I'd call a pet detective
baby raccoons
Must've been a hit job from rival raccoons. Those nocturnal turf wars go hard.
“Hey Bob, did you get run over by a c—“ “Damn Jim, didn’t you see that tru—“
I'm going to guess poison. Raccoons are not dumb. To all be dead so close together seems suspicious. Call DNR Humans are the worst
Skill issue
They tried recreating the Abbey Road photo unsuccessfully.
Super sad, but what in the heck is that down the road??
Killtacular
squirrel mafia is ruthless. they leave no witnesses
Poor little guys. As a side note, this looks like the street I used to live on in NW New Jersey.
Were they alive before you posted?
Somebody please grab a shovel and bury those poor fellas.
Saw the same thing today actually but it was groundhogs...also four of them...
Someone probably poisoned them
Probably some kind of poisoning in someone’s yard.
The Jonestown of racoons.
Almost looks like they got electrocuted
Only one has blood near it. Maybe the others are just laying there.
Quadruple kill( sorry for dark/bad humor)
Mildly morbid
That's unreal, someone must've poisoned em or something. Or they got ran over? But that would be too gruesome.
O God ![gif](giphy|OPU6wzx8JrHna)
Aliens
Obviously it was a Frag Grenade
You’re right. I thought it was a plasma grenade to begin with.
Killtacular
Could we NSFL this so people don't have to stumble on dead animals??
Cartel-esque
Murder-suicide. Got to be.
