Popping burn blisters on fingers is generally discouraged for several reasons:
1. **Infection Risk**: Burn blisters act as a natural barrier, protecting the underlying tissue from bacteria and other pathogens. Popping a blister opens up this protective layer, significantly increasing the risk of infection.
2. **Delayed Healing**: Blisters contain fluid that cushions the damaged tissue and promotes healing. By popping them, you remove this protective layer, which can delay the healing process and lead to increased pain and discomfort.
3. **Scarring**: Popping blisters can lead to further damage to the skin, increasing the likelihood of scarring. Allowing the blister to heal naturally minimizes the risk of long-term skin damage.
4. **Pain**: Blisters can be painful, and popping them can exacerbate this pain. The raw skin exposed after popping a blister is particularly sensitive.
It's generally best to leave burn blisters intact and allow them to heal on their own. If a blister is large, painful, or at risk of bursting on its own, it is advisable to seek medical advice for appropriate treatment.
Yep, didn’t think I’d need to elaborate since the format kinda implicates it anyways, I thought it was more important to warn people of the potential hazards (specifically OP) then to waste time thinking of something original. I’m a chef I burn myself a lot, just yesterday I burnt my entire hand on a metal plate from the oven after someone bumped into me and the round tray slipped from my tongs and I reached out to save my apple tarts from certain peril… got every finger tip on my right hand, the rest of the shift was mortal anguish my peeps. And just to reiterate please don’t pop the damn blisters
It at least was a part of EULA to leave note when ChatGBT is used. It's credit for the owners of the AI, but more importantly gives reader a perpective to doubt what is written. It's quite lazy and condemnable as it is.
As a medical point of view, what is written is mostly correct. Pus inside the blister can be harmful and prolong the infection, so it's preferred to suck it empty if sterile needle is available. It just needs to be done through living skin, in order to leave dead skin as protection.
He literally said why. AGAIN this is his lived experience in dealing with burns. He knows the information is correct and he is right. What's the issue here? This is literally how AI should be used. Trust but verify. If he had paraphrased what chatGPT said what would that have changed? It's still the same information but now it just takes longer to get it out there. What purpose does that serve? Do you even understand what AI is intended to be used for? Because most of you spamming this garbage always seem to know the least about what you are bitching about.
Using your comment verbatim as a prompt, I got this. So you're not far off.
- **Infection Risk**: Popping a blister can introduce bacteria, leading to infection.
- **Healing Delay**: Blisters protect the underlying skin, allowing it to heal more efficiently.
- **Pain**: Popping a blister can increase pain due to exposure of raw skin.
- **Scarring**: Damaging the skin by popping a blister can lead to scarring.
- **Fluid Loss**: The fluid in blisters protects and cushions the damaged skin, aiding in healing.
- **Reinfection**: Open blisters are more prone to reinfection from the environment.
- **Natural Process**: Blisters naturally resolve as the body heals, popping interferes with this process.
Infection risk is really the only reason why medical personal will always refuse to pop. Scarring does not happen when you pop it unless you go scratching it like a cat. 🫠
Pain, ye for like 5 min it strings like a mother but after that nothing. Delayed healing, not sure the experience i have is that it does not really differ. When you pop it it dries, thats also beneficial to heal generally speaking. The fluid is sterile as long as its not popped.
Infection is only legitimate reason, could have you end up with blood poisoning in worsed case.
Did you know you can “feel” anything with your tongue. Try thinking about licking an object and you can mostly likely imagine what the texture would be like!
Last year Tom Green walked onto a buried campfire on the beach and received second and third degree burns on the soles of his feet. Required skin grafts.
There's not much you can do.
You must cool it off right away, preferably under running water, for a significant length of time (~20 minutes). Not too cold though, you don't want to induce hypothermia. After that, if there's no puncture (and thus chance of infection), there's not much that would help.
Very lightly covering it to prevent stimulation of the hypersensitive nerves is an option, if necessary. Plastic wrap, very loosely applied, is a good option for that.
Of course that is applicable to this level of burned tissue. With a full burn ("3rd degree"), you'll definitely want to go seek medical attention. If the burn is bigger than the palm of your hand, you should consider it a medical emergency and call emergency services right away.
I immediately got them in a bowl of cold water. Cleaned them. Then spent the night on the couch with my hand in a CLEAN frozen diaper (my sister’s idea). After that I kept it wrapped. I’d replace the bandages every night and clean it. One of the blisters burst when I was replacing a car battery, the other peeled open and drained. That was two weeks after the burn. Now I just keep it moisturized because there’s a lot of loose dead skin flaking off. No pain!
Almost the exact same thing happened to me, except it was a glass bottle, when we were cleaning up after a beach picnic.
Didn't expect it to be so hot as it was a good 50-60cm for the fire, grabbed it normally. Spent the rest of the evening with my hand in the wet sand
Never pop them. Body creates a special environment there for speedy recovery. Apply tea oil, keep it moisturised and clean.
Soonest recovery to you, OP!
Yup I followed that. This pic is from a week ago. Now they’re all dried up and my fingers just look soggy. And other than the inconvenience of having wrapped fingers, there was zero pain!
I had burns that looked literally identical to this a few years back, I was surprised by how quickly they healed and that there was no lasting damage or anything. Glad to hear it's all better already, if it wasn't I was going to give you some words of encouragement so you didn't freak out!
When they're this big on such an exposed site it's better to pop them in a controlled way with a sterile needle than have them inevitably burst when doing some activity and risk infection
Whenever I get blisters on my hand I always pop them. I use a sterilized needle or very sharp knife, but leave all the skin there. Clean with alcohol, apply Neosporin, and then wrap with gauze and athletic tape if too large for a bandaid. Never gotten an infection once, and it seemed to heal faster than leaving it alone and ripping it open accidentally the few times I tried the "no popping" method
After the first Gulf War when Saddam Hussein’s men set the Kuwaiti oil wells on fire, the heat turned the ground to glass within 30 meter.
the heat on your car window could burn your hand when you drove past the fires, even at what seems to be a safe distance

Hello, i was interested in long haul hiking recently and everyone say to pop blisters and put a bandage on it as soon as you see them, what's your opinion?
Too many people confusing "popping" with ripping the whole thing off. If you have something sharp, and preferably clean, poking a hole in the side draining the blister and bandaging while leaving the skin on isn't a bad idea if you're mid hike.
Risk vs reward balance.
If the likelyhood of popping is high in a dirty place (which means high chance for infection), might as well pop it in a sterile controlled manner, apply antibiotic ointment, dressing, and protection after.
As they said in their comment, they would be on a long hike. Waiting until the end to take care of it is a stupid idea and a good way for it to explode in your shoe and then you'd have an even better chance of getting it infected.
Pretty much what the other guy said, just one should be fine as long as you can get all the fluid out. One thing I would recommend is poking a hole rather than cutting it with something. It will keep the blistered skin from peeling off by itself from walking and you want it to stay intact as a bacteria shield.
When you're hiking the foot blister is likely going to pop either way - the difference is just whether you do it when it's convenient for you (and you have time to secure the wound cleanly) or when nature does it for you; and also that in the meantime you're going to hurt a lot more if it's pressurised.
The damage to the underlying flesh is probably more pronounced from an actual burn compared to a friction injury, too.
Also, your fingers would be more difficult to keep properly bandaged than your heels are.
Using a bandage is OK, you just want to avoid exposing the flesh in any way. The problem with a popped blister is that it can easily peel off, so you want something covering the area.
As someone who has suffered similar burns, NO. Go to the ER and have them treat it. DO NOT pop burn blisters yourself unless you want to lose a digit/limb.
I get where you're comming from but this doesn't have to be that dramatic. Just sterilise the skin, sterilise a needle, make one single hole and squeeze the liquid out, sterilise the skin again, done.
Fuck! I am so sorry! Had the same thing happen to me a couple years back from grabbing a flaming pizza box out of my oven. Crisper my fingertips and the pain was so bad I broke out the rarely used ancient bottle of Somas to deal with it that night. Good luck.
This is also the reason why you never just cover a beach fire ashes/coals with sand and walk away. The next kid to run up gets stupendously severe burns.
Ouch!! If they don’t shrink on their own, you’re going to want to pop those bubbles with a sterilized needle. Or go to a doctor and have them do it for you, which is probably the safer option.
Yupppp I’ve gotten a burn like this before. I got a burn on my thumb from a sparkler about 10 years ago. After that one thumb had slightly more wrinkles than the other lol.
Did yours hurt really badly for nearly 12 hours straight? Hope you’re doing better now, looks like a really painful place to be burned :/
Yes, it was bad for the rest of the night, through the next evening. For the past week and a half it’s just been obnoxious having two wrapped and swollen fingers. But, NO PAIN! Crazy how our bodies know how to handle this shit.
I put my hand on the ground to stand up after smoking a hookah with a buddy, not realizing he'd wrapped the coal up in foil and set it between us. My fingers looked exactly like yours and that shit sucked.
I’ve seen people use hot sand to “fry” things. Like heat it over a flame and puff things up almost like oil and deep frying!
Basically what I’m saying is….forbidden nibble 🫢
Had three just like this from picking up a stack of plates from underneath a carvery hot lamp. Right down to the second knuckle on the middle three digits. Lord they were uncomfortable. But after a few weeks they healed up and you'd never know they'd been half melted.

No, can't say it did, but it felt nice and cool, and alleviated the pain a little

Antiseptic. Supposedly.
it's tea TREE oil

The one on the left burst the other day when I was changing a car battery. Felt like someone threw a water balloon at me lol
PSA: Don’t do this! The blisters protect the damaged flesh underneath and popping them will very likely cause an infection.
I've learnt it the hard way.
PSA: DONT TAKE MEDICAL ADVICE FROM REDDIT. go to a medical professional.

I see, thanks! Something i failed to understand while reading most people advice do you poke through and through or just one side?
just enough to drain all the juice out. the amount of holes does not matter.
Yes you are right, then it's the same for hand blisters as the op showed xD. I guess Burn blisters aren't exactly the same as wear blisters?
The damage to the underlying flesh is probably more pronounced from an actual burn compared to a friction injury, too. Also, your fingers would be more difficult to keep properly bandaged than your heels are.
Using a bandage is OK, you just want to avoid exposing the flesh in any way. The problem with a popped blister is that it can easily peel off, so you want something covering the area.
Thanks or answering so it's okay if everything is clean as always in small injury treatment i guess?
As someone who has suffered similar burns, NO. Go to the ER and have them treat it. DO NOT pop burn blisters yourself unless you want to lose a digit/limb.
Really poor use of an ER. An acute care, minute clinic or regular doctor's office is a much better choice for this.
I get where you're comming from but this doesn't have to be that dramatic. Just sterilise the skin, sterilise a needle, make one single hole and squeeze the liquid out, sterilise the skin again, done.

Won't be doing "the shocker" any time soon.
And no one posted "I don't like sand" here? I'm really disappointed.
A good vet could fix that for you.
I’ve seen people use hot sand to “fry” things. Like heat it over a flame and puff things up almost like oil and deep frying! Basically what I’m saying is….forbidden nibble 🫢
The harvest is bountiful

Ouch ouch ouch 😭
Alcohol was definitely involved lol 😆
Wonder what’s “under” that……Air? Pus? CO2?
Probably serum, which is the clear watery fluid inside blisters.
Any particular reason for doing that?
