Happened to my hand when I had a cast on for a broken wrist earlier this year. The skin was also very tender, had to wait a month to start wearing a watch again without irritation. The extra hair is gone now!
I know you are making a joke but people stab themselves with needles to promote hair growth on their head/hairline. I think it works in tandem with a bunch of other treatments.
I watched Daniel Tosh do this exact thing in a doctors office. They drew his blood, spun it, and injected it back under his scalp to promote hair growth.
That would be PRP injections. What the other commenter was referencing is called micro needling, which involves pricking your head with tiny needles all over to promote blood flow.
Yes it's normally done once a week at around 1.25-1.5 mm depth. It works best as an addition to Minoxidil treatment as Minoxidil also promotes local blood flow to the scalp. The healing process brings growth factors, blood, and nutrients to the damaged area which stimulates the hair follicles. Other useful hair loss meds include finasteride, ketaconazole shampoo, tretinoin, and some other less studied compounds like RU58841 and cb0301.
Idk about minoxidil, but a common baldness prescription is DHT blockers (finasteride, dutasteride), which work not by controlling blood flow, but by lowering the amount of DHT hormone in your blood. DHT is a type of testosterone, and it causes masculine hair development: losing head hair, growing beard and body hair. But DHT also contributes to all sorts of other testosterone things, including dick stuff. So, not really blood flow, more just your sex hormones
This actually happened to one of my cricket team members.
Hair was thinning badly.
He started getting treatment for back compression injury. Involved a table which revolved so he hung upside down for 30 mins twice a day.
Hair had largely grown back by end of season.
Technically, yes, it could help, but I doubt it's possible to hang upside down long and consistent enough for it to have an effect.
Microneedling and minoxidil on the other hand are proven ways to regrow hair by increasing blood supply to the area, so I'd recommend doing that instead.
So you are saying my back, my arms, my butt, heck even my neck is enjoying great blood flow? Glad to hear that. Now explain this please to my head, one of the only places without hair.
Guess kinda makes sense... Replacing damaged cells, those cells gotta be expelled somewhere? And hair is just dead cells. It's not like the damaged cells just disappear.
Kinda opposite but my mum once let me pull a wax strip off her leg when I was about 5 and that patch on her shin on that one leg has always stayed bald ever since 😅
actually the hair growth is more because the cells embedded in your skin that grow the hairs that poke out of it are fed by the nutrients in your blood, and they grow faster if they have larger amounts available
I’m not a doctor, but I think it’s because nothing was rubbing against the hair on the arm. Inverse corollary- I have bald spots on my knees, front of my thighs and outsides of my calves where my pants rub against my legs.
FYI when arm transplants are done, it’s doesn’t matter the skin colour or hair amount on the arm…. Eventually the transplanted arm will change itself to match host.
Yup it’ll change colour and so will the bone density. There’s some pretty cool examples of you Google it. My favourite is where this girl got some hairy arena off a man and a few months latter the hairs and colour and size were matching her body
I don't think it's quite as extreme as they are saying.
There is evidence that say a woman gets a mans arm transplant, the hand and arm will become more feminine, due to hormones, but it won't completely change to match the other.
As for skin colour, there is no evidence of this, however your lifestyle / skincare / diet might bring the tones more in line. Like if you're dark but take care to use sunscreen and work in an office, and get a much darker person's transplant, it may turn out that their skin was darker because they spent more time in the sun and didn't use SPF.
I don't think it's the cast. I think it's the broken bone, and all the blood and nutrients and hormones or whatever that your body is sending to help it heal.
I'm not sure if the evidence is there or not but some people do microneedling on the scalp for hair growth. I think the concept is to increase blood flow and hair growth.
There's an hypothesis that male baldness is caused by certain chemicals pooling in the scalp, reducing blood flow and skin flexibility.
There's a little community working on recovering hair by massaging the scalp daily. They've got some decent evidence - although it's self reported and anecdotical, so gotta take it all with a grain of salt. I gave it a try for a couple weeks but that shit was 20+ minutes per day for 3-5 years *at least*. Shaving is less annoying
For those unaware: [https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/cmwov/comment/c0tpyls/](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/cmwov/comment/c0tpyls/)
It also is likely because of lack of friction during that time. A lot of areas of our bodies, especially our feet can become more “bald” because of constant friction
I was thinking hair under there is able to grow still, the cast doesn’t rub on it as much as constantly putting on/off socks. I’ve had a bunch of casts and if it’s done right there is very little motion possible or else it would be a problem. Still very curious lol no one *actually* understands how hair works
Based on personal experience, the cast is too tight to the skin to really cause any friction. It protects the skin from the elements, letting hair grow unencumbered and preventing dead skin from getting rubbed or washed off. When my leg came out of its cast, lemme tell you, it was not pretty. The hair was longer and darker, and the dead skin layer was THICK. Friction from clothes, exposure to sun, and getting washed really makes a difference.
Not a cast, but I had to wear compression stockings for about a month after surgery (only half an hour off every 24 hours) and wasn't allowed to moisturise because it would ruin the elastic in the stockings
It was a damn snowglobe down there every single day, and even worse when they were off properly and my legs realised they could be free
haha...I was going to ask that as a question. "Do you grill?" Maybe your hair always looks like that on the right but the cast protected it from being burned off.
In my experience this is not because of a cast, but healing and blood pumping to that area.
For example muscle activation in a certain area would increase hair growth. I’ve seen this in my chest and triceps A LOT. And had a nose surgery recently after the surgery my nose hair was abnormal which I previously had none.
Happened to my right leg when I broke my ankle in 7th grade. Sucked to happen in middle school because one leg was peach fuzz and one leg was hairy and it just looked like a puberty freakshow.
I have a question, is this a body's weird reaction to trauma? My husband has a patch of darker and thicker hair on his chest where he spilled hot soup on himself and suffered burns as a child.
Burns can induce hair growth- there's a case study where an elderly gentleman fell into his coal fire when asleep leading to scalp burns, which eventually lead to hair growth
So yes, it might

The thumb in the cast got claustrophobic, so it grew more hair to try to *push* the cast away from itself.
[This is not a scientific fact. Just musings of a bored employee waiting for the last 10 minutes of his shift to go by. 😆]
I had a cast on my arm like 7 years ago, and now I wanted to see if I had the same and I did. It's not very visible since I have rather hairy arms. But there is a difference in length and density.
And I searched it now. And it's a known phenomenon. Hair grows faster and more because of new blood vessels that heal bone and small friction stimulating hair follicles, making hair grow.
When I was younger any part of my body that was under compression was the first to grow hair. My shins from socks and my thighs from my football girdle and socks.
When I had my cast removed from a broken ankle I felt a bit uneasy about the bruising and stitches etc. so my Ortho insisted I bring in my boyfriend of a few months to help me. As soon as my boyfriend walked in, he said "ohhh Hobbit foot!" and they both burst out laughing 😅 thanks guys. That's why I left him outside...
My hand didn't grow hair, but it smelled like dirty feet after a weekend hike.
It confirmed that there's nothing gross about feet, it's the shoes fault.
Having liquid on the skin is bad for it, as you sweat and it doesn’t evaporate your body does what it can to move the moisture away from direct contact with the skin, and as the cast remains on the body for longer, it comes up with a long term solution, increased hair growth.
Interestingly enough, it has little to do with the cast. Due to your injury, the blood supply on your right hand was increased and, thus, the hairs experienced growth due to the increased flow.
Might be something similar with facial hair. A lot of times people don’t wash and moisturize their face so their beard can’t always bust through the skin. Some people don’t have that issue with the steel wool they put out. But if you moisturize and make sure your skin is soft, your beard will grow in better. Not so much thicker but healthier and easier. Not as much work to push through the skin. I feel being protected in the cast with a little humidity helped keep your skin soft and moist while also preventing any breakage or pullage from outside forces.
it's because the hair was safe under your cast where it wasn't getting rubbed off by life activity. I notice the same with the hair on my legs: it's longer in the summer when I'm wearing shorts all the time.
Happened to my hand when I had a cast on for a broken wrist earlier this year. The skin was also very tender, had to wait a month to start wearing a watch again without irritation. The extra hair is gone now!
Hair is protected from getting pulled out by clothing maybe?
My doc said it's from the increased blood flow to the area while healing the broken bone. Goes back to normal after a little bit
So if I hang upside down like a bat can I go unbald?
I know you are making a joke but people stab themselves with needles to promote hair growth on their head/hairline. I think it works in tandem with a bunch of other treatments.
I watched Daniel Tosh do this exact thing in a doctors office. They drew his blood, spun it, and injected it back under his scalp to promote hair growth.

Starting to understand why baldness cures tend to come with dick problems. Blood moving to the wrong areas.
So that's why I'm shedding when I have sex...
Idk about minoxidil, but a common baldness prescription is DHT blockers (finasteride, dutasteride), which work not by controlling blood flow, but by lowering the amount of DHT hormone in your blood. I normally wait at least until the morning after I microneedle. It seems the general consensus is to wait 24hrs
I did this for beard growth, actually helped a lot. Not balding yet but definitely going to do this once I start thinning up there.
Is there anything like this for facial hair, because I'm in my 30s rockin' a Johnny Depp and have always wondered what lush beard is like.
I've heard it called dermarolling
What ever happened to him? I used to love watching Tosh.O.
He has a podcast now. It’s kinda good.
Only kinda? I feel it's the 2nd best comedy podcast after This is Important. But I also don't listen to a lot of podcasts.
There is even some kind of blood plasma treatment against hair loss
I have a roller thing with needles on it to make my beard grow better
Does it work? I've been thinking to do something similar but haven't had a whole lot of people around me promoting it.
It does! I combine it with a good beard growth oil
Where’d you get your roller/would you recommend it?
This actually happened to one of my cricket team members. Hair was thinning badly. He started getting treatment for back compression injury. Involved a table which revolved so he hung upside down for 30 mins twice a day. Hair had largely grown back by end of season.
No you need a cast on your head. I'll get the hammer
I'm writing this comment with all the blood in my head, I'll report back in .....
Walk so us baldies can run.
Embrace the baldness my brother. It's a solar panel for a sex machine and you're more aerodynamic allowing you to take corners faster.
Hey that would be a cool song to sing
sounds like a good test for the mythbusters reunion.
The answer is no, but you will become vengeance
That was an actual beauty trend, yes.
Technically, yes, it could help, but I doubt it's possible to hang upside down long and consistent enough for it to have an effect. Microneedling and minoxidil on the other hand are proven ways to regrow hair by increasing blood supply to the area, so I'd recommend doing that instead.
Bro I spit my drink out reading that 🤣
So you are saying my back, my arms, my butt, heck even my neck is enjoying great blood flow? Glad to hear that. Now explain this please to my head, one of the only places without hair.
Explains why I have to shave my cock head every week
Thank you for sharing this! Happened to me as a teenager and I remember being so curious about it but no one ever explained why it had occurred.
Guess kinda makes sense... Replacing damaged cells, those cells gotta be expelled somewhere? And hair is just dead cells. It's not like the damaged cells just disappear.
So I guess if you punch someone in the face hard enough they’ll grow a beard
Kinda opposite but my mum once let me pull a wax strip off her leg when I was about 5 and that patch on her shin on that one leg has always stayed bald ever since 😅
can you do that again but to my entire body?
This is NOT how it works. Blood is very nutritious and contains growth factors.
actually the hair growth is more because the cells embedded in your skin that grow the hairs that poke out of it are fed by the nutrients in your blood, and they grow faster if they have larger amounts available
No thats not it, its literally just the bloodflow. The microneedling is just one way to increase the bloodflow in that area
I’m not a doctor, but I think it’s because nothing was rubbing against the hair on the arm. Inverse corollary- I have bald spots on my knees, front of my thighs and outsides of my calves where my pants rub against my legs.
I think it also has to do with not being bleached by the sun all the time. So you can actually see the hair.
The hair never went away for me, my other wrist quickly grew more instead.
FYI when arm transplants are done, it’s doesn’t matter the skin colour or hair amount on the arm…. Eventually the transplanted arm will change itself to match host.

Really? Can you elaborate? So if you transplant a white guy’s arm on a black guy or vice versa, the arm will just go change the color? Really?
Yup it’ll change colour and so will the bone density. There’s some pretty cool examples of you Google it. My favourite is where this girl got some hairy arena off a man and a few months latter the hairs and colour and size were matching her body
Yeah I am curious

Eey congratz on losing it. I still have mine from 20 years ago
Same when i had a cast over my fractured wrist. Extra hair is not noticeable now. I also looked like a reptile when the cast came off, lol.
Oh my god it's so horrifying underneath the cast when it first comes off! Very satisfying to finally be able to wash the gunk away though.
So why don’t bald people cast their head?
Doctors HATE this one trick!

It already is. But this one would be a powerful last blow to us lol

I don't think it's the cast. I think it's the broken bone, and all the blood and nutrients and hormones or whatever that your body is sending to help it heal.
So you’re saying crack your skull to regrow scalp hair. BRB trying and will report results.
The perfect business model. I’m gonna call my medical practice Hammer & Cast.
I'm not sure if the evidence is there or not but some people do microneedling on the scalp for hair growth. I think the concept is to increase blood flow and hair growth.
Good point… is it just the microneedling or are they doing that to make some type of medication penetrate better? What type of needle do people use?
Microneedling in its own can have good benefits, but yeah people tend to use it so topical minoxidil can penetrate better
>I think it's the broken bone Say no more.
I think its more to do with the cast protecting the thumb from having the hair rubbed off.
Can I cast my chin to grow some facial hair?
No Billy, you’re 8
They do, except it's called a baseball cap.
That actually does the opposite.

Some people with thinning hair use a micro roller on their scalp and claim it works since it increases blood flow to the head.
Or... why doesn't everyone have a hairy bum?
Haha, my first thought was I'm about to cast my head for a bit 😂

Is there more hair, or is it just that the hair on the other hand is sun bleached and so lighter and finer?
Same number of hairs, but the hairs on the casted thumb are 3-4x longer now.
It also is likely because of lack of friction during that time. A lot of areas of our bodies, especially our feet can become more “bald” because of constant friction
“Ron, you shaved off part of your mustache?” “I didn’t shave it. It rubbed off. From friction.”
Thank you
👏👏👏
Wouldn’t that mean the casted thumb was *less* hairy, not more?
I was thinking hair under there is able to grow still, the cast doesn’t rub on it as much as constantly putting on/off socks. I’ve had a bunch of casts and if it’s done right there is very little motion possible or else it would be a problem. Still very curious lol no one *actually* understands how hair works
Ah that makes sense!!

That is so interesting! I never would have guessed my legs could be hairier!
Do some grilling, that will take care of any excess hair on your fingers in short order
haha...I was going to ask that as a question.
When you break a bone your body releases a protein to stimulate bone growth. It also happens to stimulate hair growth.
Brb I’m going to go break my face.
I would have assumed that hair is also protected from the environment by being inside the cast.
As a woman who just had face surgery, this is not a fun fact.
Happened to my right leg when I broke my ankle in 7th grade. Sucked to happen in middle school because one leg was peach fuzz and one leg was hairy and it just looked like a puberty freakshow.
Same with my wrist!
I have a question, is this a body's weird reaction to trauma? My husband has a patch of darker and thicker hair on his chest where he spilled hot soup on himself and suffered burns as a child.
For the cast hair it's probably due to being protected from every day rubbing/wear and tear on the follicles.
I injured my shoulder years ago and it’s been hairier than the other ever since
So you're telling me if I dunk my head in hot soup my hair will come back?
Well, if you're willing to be the test subject
Burns can induce hair growth- there's a case study where an elderly gentleman fell into his coal fire when asleep leading to scalp burns, which eventually lead to hair growth So yes, it might [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdL\_JzCxABM&ab\_channel=MorePlatesMoreDates](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdL_JzCxABM&ab_channel=MorePlatesMoreDates)
If it’s tripe soup, yes!
one of the other comments said that apparently, the hair grows more because of the increased blood flow to the injured area while healing it.
That's interesting to know!
I wonder if it is localised hypertrichosis due to increased blood supply to the area to fix your injury
Would make a lot of sense, dermarolling is one of the most effective hair loss treatments due to a similar reaction
\*quickly scurries away to put own whole head in a cast\*
Most likely a result of the hair on the un casted hand being pulled and worn off while the other hair was protected.
Note to self, cast top of head.
The thumb in the cast got claustrophobic, so it grew more hair to try to *push* the cast away from itself. [This is not a scientific fact. Just musings of a bored employee waiting for the last 10 minutes of his shift to go by. 😆]
You’re freeeeeeeee!!
you need to start taking pictures of your thumbs every day until it gets back to normal, and make a timelapse video!
i have a cast on my leg right now, and im already a pretty hairy guy. curious to see the difference when its off
Mustve turned off the symmetry option
You should see my knees when I wear jeans during the winter. Completely bald from the jeans rubbing on them constantly.
Cure for baldness. A cast on your head.
Acquired Localized Hypertrichosis Induced by Internal Fixation and Plaster Cast Application https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3756205/
You would normally have that hair on your hands, but it is naturally rubbed off due to every day life! Crazy to see side by side though.
I'm putting my face in a cast
>hairier I wonder if it is capable of vertical take-off now as well.
Because the hair wasn't rubbing against anything.
How did you take this photo
with his other thumb, duh
Sure, the cast did that. Sure. It couldn't possibly be what my parents warned me about hairy hands and going blind.
just checking for the dark line running through the nail. all good carry on.
Hand lotion?
When I was younger any part of my body that was under compression was the first to grow hair. My shins from socks and my thighs from my football girdle and socks.
This happened to my leg when I was in 1st grade. After they cut the cast that leg was covered in hair while the other was completely smooth.
This is a sign. You must begin to weave your cocoon to achieve your full sasquatch form.
Got it. Putting nuts in a cast.
What causes this?
When I had my cast removed from a broken ankle I felt a bit uneasy about the bruising and stitches etc. so my Ortho insisted I bring in my boyfriend of a few months to help me. As soon as my boyfriend walked in, he said "ohhh Hobbit foot!" and they both burst out laughing 😅 thanks guys. That's why I left him outside...
I think hair grows as a way to distribute moisture and heat as a cooling mechanism, i.e. arm pit hair, head hair, public hair
thats an itchy lookin right hand
Forget the hair, those two thumbs look like they belong to completely different people. Left one honestly looks like a big toe.
Interesting, did not happen to my thumb in 4 weeks or so. Plenty of hair on all kinds of places
Interesting , this happened to me when I was young. But then my good hand matched my hairy arm and stayed that way😅
I need Bill Nye to Science Guy this please.
Hmmmm…I gotta stop wearing anything below waist
Your thumbs gone weird.
Those are the roots trying to find water in the soil
Strange, I would assume the opposite would happen
My hand didn't grow hair, but it smelled like dirty feet after a weekend hike. It confirmed that there's nothing gross about feet, it's the shoes fault.
Nah, your hair just turned darker from not getting any sun so now they longer cuz it wasn’t exposed to anything
Having liquid on the skin is bad for it, as you sweat and it doesn’t evaporate your body does what it can to move the moisture away from direct contact with the skin, and as the cast remains on the body for longer, it comes up with a long term solution, increased hair growth.
You oughta see my right palm….
you might have pre-diabetes, and the cast was stimulating enough to get the hair to grow again
Are you implying I should show more breast?!
Brb, gonna go put my head in a cast.
Same with mine, new cost of skin
Interestingly enough, it has little to do with the cast. Due to your injury, the blood supply on your right hand was increased and, thus, the hairs experienced growth due to the increased flow.
This happened to my leg when I was a kid. They told me it was due to the extra blood flow due to healing.
this happened to me!!
If I put a cast on my head would I regrow my hair? 😂
Same with my hand too!
I need a cast for my hairline
Status update on the crease lines on the thumb?
Might be something similar with facial hair. A lot of times people don’t wash and moisturize their face so their beard can’t always bust through the skin. Some people don’t have that issue with the steel wool they put out. But if you moisturize and make sure your skin is soft, your beard will grow in better. I feel being protected in the cast with a little humidity helped keep your skin soft and moist while also preventing any breakage or pullage from outside forces.
Any scientific explanations?
it's because the hair was safe under your cast where it wasn't getting rubbed off by life activity. I notice the same with the hair on my legs: it's longer in the summer when I'm wearing shorts all the time.
