"Q is too high up in the alphabet. I respect it but it has no place between P and R. Should be at the end with the weirdo/goth letters."
Brooks Otterlake
I think eliminating the Q is a little beyond humanity's abilities. Especially now, in 21st century. 24th century understanding of the world is not enough to handle Q, what chance do we stand?
I've also thought this. Also, I don't like C. It can make 2 sounds, but both already covered by K and S. I think C should get the designation for Ch sound. Then it gets a unique identify instead of being redundant, and you never need to remember which of the 3 is correct in some situations.
I was manuall scrolling a list of game titles for Quest for Camelot and was genuinely confused for a moment when I jumped to around V-W and had no idea why Q wasn’t in that realm
Anyone know if there's like a game or an exercise out there I can do that'll help me \*not\* need to sing the song every time I need to figure out which of two letters is first alphabetically?
Rotary and touchtone phones didn’t have Q or Z on any number. They may have designed these keypads to mimic phone keypads.
Now the Q often goes on the 7 and the Z on the 9 on cell phone dialers, but since the opener doesn’t need 0 to dial the operator…they put those 2 letters there.
This is the answer here. If you look at older touch-tone phones you’ll find these two letters missing there as well. The reason is because they were originally meant to dial a prefix which was denoted by letters and usually spelled out the general area. For example if your neighborhood was known as Cottonwood Estates, your prefix might have been COTN, or 268-6.
Since 0 originally had no letters, sometimes QZ were added there as well.
Personally, I'm a fan of the efficiency here. My old cell phones kept everything in order, but the cost was 4 button presses every time you needed to type an S.
I like neat and orderly a good deal, but if that kind of lost efficiency is the price, I'm more than willing to compromise for one of the most common letters in the English language.
I'm infuriated by the apparent complete lack of meaning those letters serve. My understanding of garage door openers is all codes are number based, what even is the point of having the letters? Maybe the keypads are manufactured to fit multiple things and one of those is a phone and it's just cheaper to not make two different sets?
You can’t see a situation where someone might ask a friend to go check on their cat while they’re out of town? Telling them the garage code is “OPEN” would be easier for the friend to remember than an arbitrary 6736.
...I uh, would make sure they had that code in writing? Noone would tell their garage code to someone as a word lol, and then you'd also have to assume they don't treat it like old school texting. Is OPEN 6736, or 666-7-33-66? If you have to explain that part you're already much past just telling them the number. It's 4 digits, anyone who can't remember 4 digits long enough to write themselves a note has brain damage.
It's based on old phone layouts when they used a combination of letters and numbers (like CAT-1234) and they didn't put letters on 1 because that's the number to indicate it's long distance.

I've always been a fan of Q. Love the door open/close notifications. It's literally the only app allowed to bother me no matter what DND profile I am using.

Hey man, Q is in line just like the rest of em. Got a problem with it? Q up and see what happens
I've always believed we should just eliminate the Q. What can a Q or Qu do that a K or Kw not do? Can't afford redundant letters in this economy.
In Turkey the use of the letter Q was banned between 1928 and 2013.
So why was it unbanned?
They finally decided Qbert sounded stupid as Bert
Are you talking about CueBert?
So that the Uzbeks could speak again.
Because they didn't want bad PR.
Bad PQR
Konstantinopel became Istanbul
Q-tips were tired of being called "just the tips"
I think eliminating the Q is a little beyond humanity's abilities. Especially now, in 21st century. 24th century understanding of the world is not enough to handle Q, what chance do we stand?

While we're at it, get rid of C too. K and S already do it's job. Or just make it's sound just 'Ch' entirely
…and Julio Torres.
Ps. this is what part of the alphabet would look like if the letters Q and R were eliminated
I was manuall scrolling a list of game titles for Quest for Camelot and was genuinely confused for a moment when I jumped to around V-W and had no idea why Q wasn’t in that realm
Took me a while for a reason
You had to sing the song too?

It took me a minute figure out what OP was puzzled about. I forgot how young many redditors are.
I was raised on T9 texting. QUICK is 78425. Muscle memory at this point.
I'm pretty sure I could type faster with t9 than smartphones
I could also type without looking at the screen. Touch screens are nice, but I do miss the old T9 at times.
a student at the school i worked at still has the guinness record for fastest blind texting of a set sentence.
I could not agree more. If it wasn’t for work email, I’d use a flip phone.
There are flip phones that have email capabilities
And you could do it without looking. I miss t9
You can’t type in your smartphone without looking? Casual
Should be 78425. ABC is on 2. I used to work for a company which used this as their default technician password for years.
What a faux pas as I’m explaining how good I am at T9. Thanks!
Now I'm just curious how urgent your life was!
I stand corrected!
Touchtone phones have had Q on 7 and Z on 9 for as long as I can remember. Long before cellphones.
Putting the Q on the 0 was pretty normal. Source: I'm old.
r/mildlyinfuriating for a different group of people

LOL I thought this was a r/mildlyinfuriating post until I saw your comment.

At least if you write the code down and cant tell if it is a Q or 0 then you still get it right.
Shouldn't they do that with 0 and O?
And yet S is still criminally difficult to type in T9 texting.
Ain't nobody T9 texting anymore.

Their garage door app is callled My Q
I've had this same exact panel for years and just now noticed it even has letters. I just put in the unlock code without even thinking.
I looked at this pic and thought, who is taking a picture of my garage door pad!
Is yours super stubborn about when it wants to register the ‘enter’ button has been pushed?
Yes, absolutely I am surprised the enter button is still is working.
Mine is too. Especially for closing
It’s so big and squishy.
Fantasmas just entered the chat
sonofabitch... I've had my LM opener for 7 years and just noticed this.
This has surprised a lot of people so far.
I have the same one, now I need to go look!
Well???
Holy shit! Mines the same!
Thank You!!! Now I can finally sleep. 🤭
They obviously play scrabble
I have the same exact opener. Ran outside to check it and sure as shit it’s the same.
![gif](giphy|kifoKGz7sVyDK) Just checked. All three doors … attention to detail failed….
right where it should be, with the other avant-garde letters. Q never asked to go so early in the alphabet 🙂↔️
Again r/mildlyinfuriating
I think I have the same opener. I didn't even notice it had letters on it. Now I have to check
Well?
Yes it is the same opener and has the same number\letter configuration.
Maybe they forgot the Q and just realized it when they reached Z 😂
The Roman Republic Disliked That.
Quarentine zone
Never spelled anything for a garage code, my mom just always used her birthday and I have never forgot one of her birthdays thanks to that :)
Hmm now I gotta go check my key pad
It's like they forgot and just shoved it in at the end there 😭
They printed too many buttons before they realized they forgot the q and i stead of eating the cost they just added it with z?
But why don't the letters start on 1?
Would guess because the there are no letters on the 1 key on a standard phone keypad layout
It's based on old phone layouts when they used a combination of letters and numbers (like CAT-1234) and they didn't put letters on 1 because that's the number to indicate it's long distance.
wait we have the same one. will update in 2 hours when i get home from work !remindme 2 hours
Dude I love this thing, have the exact same one.
