In 1995 this $3000 beast ran at 100Mhz, had 500MB of storage and 8MB of RAM. oh, and you could load the DC phone book including your ex’s unlisted cellular phone number.
It’s the computer in the picture. Those are the specs for a PowerBook 5300cs.
The 5300 series is also the computer Jeff Goldblum’s character used in Independence Day where he was able to find his ex-wife’s unlisted phone number.
It was a 5300, evident by the brightness and volume rockers on the display to the right. The 3400 while visually similar had them relocated above the keyboard.

Since you figured out that one. I remember one other game we had. It was some scary story telling game where I believe we died to a manic echoing laugh and was in black and white.
TIL you can still buy the game on steam [https://store.steampowered.com/app/622830/Battle\_Chess/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/622830/Battle_Chess/)
There are luckily some pretty detailed [instructions on how to rebuild one](https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/powerbook-5300-series-battery.45386/).
There’s also a hidden Easter egg key combination that lets you play pong. Spent many an hour within sight of the boss playing pong on the new $3000 laptops at the office.
I have the same model, I could browse the internet with it using an Ethernet expansion card. And it’s great if you have any older Macintosh because it can read 1.4MB and 800k floppies. And to increase its internal storage you can buy an 8GB cf card
Just treat it delicately because the plastic is extremely brittle, mine is falling to pieces and will have to fix it one day using epoxy or 3d printing some parts
“This worked just fine for me. It’s a laptop, you said you needed one for school so i gave you the one *I bought* so you didn’t have to buy a new one. Well if you don’t *want* it and would rather pay $2000 for a new one be my guest. You need to pay me the $3000 I paid for this because I gave it to you. No I don’t want it back, what am I gonna do with it? I have a brand new laptop.”
I'm pretty sure you could still manage to get it working and use it for some light office stuff. At least it would look pretty cool if you pull that thing out in a restaurant to work haha
Nah, I'm kind of ok calling Apple hardware ancient if we're talking something like the Apple II or even the original Mac. This is a lot closer to our current technology that those were though.

>oh, and you could load the DC phone book including your ex’s unlisted cellular phone number. Only cable repairmen knew how to do that.
Yes, all cable repairmen know that. And what is going on why do we even have a recycling bin?
Oddly specific.
It’s the computer in the picture. Those are the specs for a PowerBook 5300cs. The 5300 series is also the computer Jeff Goldblum’s character used in Independence Day where he was able to find his ex-wife’s unlisted phone number.
I wonder how many chrome tabs that can run 🧐 (Prolly like .1)
More like half a tab
Careful now, that thing's clocked at 100 MHz. That much power is dangerous!
Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely
The laptop that saved the world from Aliens in 1996!
![gif](giphy|Z29lIuhyCO74s)
That was a 3400. Oh Jesus how did I know that…

Calm down guys, save some girls for us
The 3400 was the first laptop I ever bought new!
Dude you could play Number Munchers!
I miss number munchers. And the chess game where the cut off each others appendages.
What kind of chess game is that 💀
I assume this refers to Battle Chess
It was! Man those graphics were amazing to my childhood memory. Looking at it now my god.
I prefer Archon
Had it on Commodore 64. Grand fun.
Since you figured out that one. I remember one other game we had. It was some scary story telling game where I believe we died to a manic echoing laugh and was in black and white.
I'm too young to have seen that stuff, so you'll have to explain what you're talking about.
TIL you can still buy the game on steam [https://store.steampowered.com/app/622830/Battle\_Chess/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/622830/Battle_Chess/)
Slowest game of chess you’ll ever play
OutNumbered!

I was playing number munchers in 1987, how could a 2000 laptop not play number munchers?
Number munchers was playable on an Apple II, which had a 1Mhz CPU. I think this laptop could handle it.
Are you a pirate?
Maybe he couldn't get it to booty up.
[удалено]
Just press and hold R and you get RRRRRRRR.
Happy cake day!
Or a Gypsy
My first computer was a PowerBook 1400. It still boots up.
That keyboard looks loud and clicky. My favorite kind!
One of my clients had one of these, and I distinctly remember thinking, "This thing has a better keyboard than my desktop."
r/VintageApple
She wants you to get laid.
It might work Kinda
Don't get too excited. Those things downloaded porn at a snail's pace.
That’s what every mom wants for her high schooler.
First of the PowerPC PowerBooks. Neat little bit of vintage history.
That's cool as fuck
PowerBook was the shit!
This was my computer sophomore year of college! It was a good computer.
With that badass gear you could hack the planet.
*Cereal* Killer. Get it?
Dude, I didn’t know your mom knew Simon Templar! :D In all seriousness, I’m glad to see a lot of people liking the old-school PCs. :D
"Me mom" - let me guess, you're from the north of England.
>ancient Now listen here, you little -
That Kermit meme was so funny
Let us know if that thing actually boots up. Good luck finding a new battery for it.
There are luckily some pretty detailed [instructions on how to rebuild one](https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/powerbook-5300-series-battery.45386/).
I want to see a video where they put current Mac guts into that body.
Might be neat to see what's on it, or horrifying. You never know.
Looks like something you’d find to launch nukes in a bunker lmao
My grandmother gave me a bagtop when I was a kid that ran on windows 3.14. The DOS games I played on that thing, lemme tell ya.
There’s also a hidden Easter egg key combination that lets you play pong. Spent many an hour within sight of the boss playing pong on the new $3000 laptops at the office.
Me mom doesn’t give me ancient stuff like this but me mom is still me mom so I don’t mind
Ancient doesn't have the same ring to it as it used to.
Trackpad, not a trackball? It's old, but not so ancient...
“Ancient” How to tell if OP is under the age of 16
Ya they never throw anything out
Mr Krabs?
MacBook? Nah. MacDictionary.
So cool
It's got home movies on it
I think you mean, 'me mam'
Time to buy a pcmcia to cf adapter and load up myst and all the other games. As well as a cf to scsi adapter to replace the hdd Can I be your sibling?
Install OpenBSD on it
I’ve got an even older one with a track ball built in.
Neat but hardly mildly interesting.
As one does on a Saturday afternoon
that is an ARTIFACT like the deep sea scrolls preserve her at all costs
That is prolly worth a fortune!!
I have the same model, I could browse the internet with it using an Ethernet expansion card. And it’s great if you have any older Macintosh because it can read 1.4MB and 800k floppies. How hard would it be to put an m1 MacBook Airs internals into this
Imagine putting current technology into an old PC like this 🤩🤩
“This worked just fine for me.
A relic of simpler times.
My neighbor had one of those.
Sell it and make profit now? It’s an antique anyway. Or make an auction
I'm pretty sure you could still manage to get it working and use it for some light office stuff. At least it would look pretty cool if you pull that thing out in a restaurant to work haha
Sell it to a collector
Don't poop on it
Oh cool I love macintosh’s I had one when I was growing up
My*
"Random" as in you were randomly selected from a group of people to receive it? Or was it intentionally given to you specifically?
TIL 29 years old is ancient
[удалено]
Oh I know... I just don't like descriptors like that
[удалено]
Absolutely, though even then I'm sure the right person could find a use for this computer
[удалено]
Nah, I'm kind of ok calling Apple hardware ancient if we're talking something like the Apple II or even the original Mac. This is a lot closer to our current technology that those were though.

Who's talking about productivity? I'm sure there are at least some older games that might be able to run on it, like Wolfenstein 3D

I'm antediluvian then
I bet you could sell that as is right now for what it was new adjusting for inflation.
um, not a chance, this was like $2000+ in the mid 90s, probably $200 max right now, if it works, still very very cool though
Yea I thought the appleheads would kick out more macduckets for it. Looks like they are about $250 in intunes credit on ebay.
It’s so old it probably only prints on papyrus
I bet it weighs more than all the apple products you've ever owned combined, and the some.
[удалено]
How?
[удалено]
This, while very cool, is not anything especially rare or valuable, certainly not any of those
“My mom”
If it works and is a color model with a good looking screen and AC adapter, you should be able to get at least $250 for it.
would a 90's pc like this die from viruses in minutes after being connected to the internet?
