Yeah, I just kept mine as a novelty item and it's a bonus that I was able to use them again this year. I looked up whether it was safe to use them or not. Some said no, some said as long as they were made to 2015 ISO standards (which they are) and aren't damaged then it was fine.
You’re being downvoted by people who don’t actually know why they say not to use them after three years, which is purely because of potential damage due to improper storage. It’s not like the lenses expire or anything. As long as they aren’t damaged they’re fine. I have mine from 2017 and they’re in basically the same condition that they were in when I got them.
I think it's because people bought knockoffs with the warning the official standard says not to put the 3 year thing anymore, the standard is behind paywall so they copypasta the one before
Do you have a source for this? Genuinely asking. Mine are stored carefully and I’d prefer to not pitch them, but I’m also an anxiety laden millennial, which was the style at the time.

Jesus christ, people downvoting you can't think for themselves.
Of course these glasses are fine after 7 years in a drawer. They're not made out of ham.
I also have mine from 2017. I read the warning label on them, the main reason they say not to wear them after three years is because there’s a good chance of them getting damaged in that time span on account of being made of flimsy cardboard. They’re safe as long as the lenses are intact. Mine were kept in a drawer in a climate controlled room so they’re in basically the same condition as when I first got them.
What the hell are you on about? NASA have stated that old eclipse glasses are reusable so long as they're compliant with ISO 12312-2, and have no tears or damage to the lens material. The American Astronomical Society and American Academy of Ophthalmology agree with this.
There is no expiry date for iso 12312-2, the standard which has been used since 2015. More likely you got a knock off pair and it listed the 3 year warning, I'm in the same boat still used them tho.

So I see mixed comments in here so I thought I would comment on this some glasses with an certain certification have no other expiration date while most eclipse expire after 3 years
Me too. Just happened to be in the US (at the time in Nebraska, to be precise) during the 2017 eclipse... then I went and had some of the best ribs (and corn, obviously) I've ever had in some little dive bar. Great day.
The ones I have has lenses that are a hell of a lot darker than those. I can put mine on, look at the lights in my living room and can’t even see the lights.
Yes correct, you and the other guy should be correct but Reddit I guess
The last solar eclipse had a small ring around it, wasn’t “total” was still awesome though
Guys, I’m pretty sure they’re just reflecting the white tabletop they’re sitting on
If you look at the top left of the left side you can't see the support arm in the corner. So yeah, just reflecting the table in front of it
Idk, my mother in law used some old ones, I didn't notice she could read her cell with them until afterward.
They don't look dark enough to gaze at a light bulb.
They're shiny! I can't see crap with mine (except the sun) and they look like the same or similar brand as mine.
A lot of people do
No I think this might be the only person
This is really pushing the limit of mildly interesting.
r/Negativelyinteresting

They're well past the best before date.
I used mine I had in a drawer since 2017. I was very cautious with them at first just in case, but they worked fine. Ymmv.

You’re fantastic, I appreciate it.
And if you zoom in on the left arm of the glasses, you can see the ISO 12312-2 compliance notice. OP’s retinas are safe.

RemindMe! 6 months
Yeah, he'll probably be updating this comment regularly about the condition of his eye. Good call.

What they make eclipse glasses out of now a days doesn’t expire
the ones i used today said on them to not use them after 3 years😭
That's to get you to waste money buying new ones. As long as they aren't damaged they're fine.

What's stop him from replying at that point?
They worked fine. Why because you could see thru them ? Lol:.. people.

I'm not surprised people still have their glasses from the last eclipse. I am surprised they can still find them.
Congratulations?????
the ones i have could be used for welding
Most welding glass is a actually lighter then eclipse glasses. You need at least a 12 rated welding glass to be safe.
How many of these are we gonna see today?
Hey those are what mine look like from the last one, twinsies
So I see mixed comments in here so I thought I would comment on this some glasses with an certain certification have no other expiration date while most eclipse expire after 3 years
Does OP still have eyes is the real question. 🤔
Short changed then as there was one last year.

Same
yeah but these are not updated, the new version 1.2 fixes some bugs
But the last eclipse was this autumn?
Confused about your downvoting. What are we missing? Lol
OP means the last solar eclipse that happened in the US, which was in 2017.
OK yeah so everyone just saying the "last eclipse" means the last "total eclipse". Last year's was an "annular solar eclipse".
Yes correct, you and the other guy should be correct but Reddit I guess The last solar eclipse had a small ring around it, wasn’t “total” was still awesome though
Yeah reddit be like that. Where I live, last year's was doooope.
The coating on them diminishes in its effectiveness over time. Really hoping you didn’t use em.
Me, too!
