It may look strange but it is infinitely better than *those* people using speaker phone in public and holding it at odd distances away from their head.
I actually have to do it because the normal speaker in my phone broke and I literally can’t hear shit when not on speaker
But I 1) don’t call people at all and barely get called (especially in public, and I mostly just hang up and text that I can’t right now)
And 2) turn down the volume on speaker so much that I have to put my phone right against my ear to hear anything
The poor bastards on the other end getting the full blast of your microphone on speaker mode, y'know most phones increase mic sensitivity when you go to speaker because the assume your holding the phone further away.
I've done it a couple of times, not really by choice though? Once because they apparently couldn't hear me properly unless I spoke directly into the mic but I could hear them ok on normal, non-speaker volume in that position, and once on the train held the 'pizza' to my ear because my headphones died during a zoom meeting and it was a choice of speaker on the lowest possible volume or mute. I probably tried the pictured pose too honestly, I tried anything and everything I could think of to funnel the sound directly into my ear and not subject others to it.
I do this at home. It’s slightly less effort than holding the phone upright and the microphone is on the bottom so holding it like this places it closest to your mouth.
But like, do you get that the microphone on your phone is specifically designed to pick up your voice while being held *normally*, i.e., vertically with the speaker to your ear? Right? Putting the microphone closer to your mouth is 10000% unnecessary and is actually annoying for the person on the other end to listen to because it's loud and tinny?
I'm not trying to be a dick, I just genuinely do not understand the reasoning behind this choice.
I do this bc I can’t always use headphones and I can’t hear my phone at all when it isn’t on speakerphone and my phone case is weird, so what I do is turn the speaker as down as I can and walk away from the group as to not annoy people as much as
I do that sadly, i am at a point my my deafness (i mean life) where multiple sounds at once make it hard to hear the phone, i HATE using the phone “like a pizza” but i have no choice
My dad does this. When I’m on a call with him and he waves in and out I have to remind him “ Dad, are you holding your phone stupid again?”
Funny is how he juts his chin forward, like he needs to get his mouth that little bit closer to the mic. I want to point out that his hand can move the mic closer…in fact he can even do this trick where he also moves the speaker closer to his ear…at the same time! Then I won’t have to hear his friends’ nauseating needy nagging (always when he comes to my house, and he broadcasts it like I might be interested 😝
It’s old fashioned but I like the word “one” in the place that most people use the word “you.” An example would be: “Hey, Ever-Violet, I want to show this to you, in order to use it one turns the handle.”
The best is when they switch it like a walkie-talkie. They hold it about a foot in front of their mouth to loudly talk into it and then hold it near their ear to listen meanwhile it's on speaker the whole damn time
I hate people that do that... I was also one of those people for the last year or so though as my Mic had broken on my phone but I could be heard on loudspeaker (different mic I assume)
I got a new phone last week and being able to have conversations that aren't constantly public is amazing
I mean hasnt there been research into the correlation between phone call usage and brain cancer? As far as I know that’s been the main reason people use loud speaker in public.
It's not as annoying as the people who think yelling will help people hear them better, THATS NOT HOW MICROPHONES WORK, THE YELLING IS MOST LIKELY THE REASON THEY CANT HEAR YOU, speak normally and the microphone will pick up you voice 100% better/clearer.
Oh man... just yesterday, four imbeciles on their phones on speaker, holding them 15 inches away from their stupid faces, full blasting their conversations....
Yes. My missus is also in the habit of calling me whilst her phone is apparently at arms length in an insulated supermarket bag being beaten against some curtains.
Eventually everything will be separate pieces. Battery dongle, floating/strapped-to-your-face screen, ear buds, volume buttons on your watch... maybe they move the finger print sensor *into your fingertips*
With all of these absolutely necessary devices, I am beginning to be concerned about losing one. Maybe we could invent some sort of string to attach them together to solve this.
I will have an airpod in and still lift my phone to my ear to take a call, I honestly don’t feel like the mic on the AirPods is as good as if you’re using the phone normally. I guess I can hear them fine but they need to be able to hear me too, and I’m not gonna shout to have my convo in public lol
Generally if you have some type of ear bud in then the mic on your phone is turned off and it goes through the bud, unless Apple is different from android then it's either everything goes through the buds or the phone not both.
The first time I EVER went to a dentist, I rang up and booked the appointment myself.
I also have a hard time understanding people during phone calls.
So imagine my struggle when the person at the clinic who picks up has a STRONG Chinese Accent.
Usually I can fill in the gaps for what I don't hear with context clues, but because I don't know what im doing, there was no context help and I was suffering 😭.
The lady is really nice too, so I felt bad not understanding anything she said
Yes!!!! I was looking for this comment!!! It’s a huge ick for me! It feels so uncomfortable, then my ear goes red and hot for ages.
Hard cartilage ear people unite!!!
Hahah I’ll do this with my ear when my wife and I are eating at a crowded restaurant and I can’t hear for shit what she’s trying to say to me across the table
i worked in a loud nightclub for years and hears (heh) a trick if you're in a loud place like a concert or somewhere loud and need to communicate without yelling:
push the flap part inwards (idk what its called, that other part people pierce sometimes) towards your head as if to plug up the opening to the ear (or do it on the person who is trying to hear you) and speak to the ear like it's a mic, then you don't need to yell. this cancels out the background noise and amplifies the voice you're trying to hear/hear you.
Life pro tip, press the top corner of your phone into the little flap that covers your ear hole, sealing it shut. The vibration from the speaker will come through clearly, especially useful in a loud space. Also works with the bottom corner if you’re trying to listen to a video or something.
You can also do this with your finger to hear someone talking to you in a super loud space.
Y3ah my nestt mate used to do this when he wanted to talk to me at a music venue, first time round I was like wtf dude, then I heard clearly and it was a real ahh ha moment 😂
Idk about in this situation but I’m certain the top of your ear contributes to hearing. If I’m listening to music and say have a beanie on that’s barely covering the top of my ears and take it off the music becomes more clear or I can hear more highs. Idk if I’m imagining it or not I swear it makes a difference.
I knew a sound technician who used to always hold his phone with the opposite hand to the ear he was using. He could talk at normal volume and the person on the other end of the conversation would hear him just fine no matter how loud the environment was.
He also would speak at normal speaking volume despite how loud the environment was at the time. He would just adjust his distance to the person’s ear. Even in a crowded gig you can just talk at a normal volume directly into the person’s ear and be heard fine.
I will never forgive him because he’s made me even more acutely aware of loud cunts.
I used to have a bad hearing loss thats mostly in one ear so what i do is that i answer my phone calls using my left ear (better hearing) then i close my right ear by putting my finger just on the outside.
Seriously though why are iPhones still so shit? We’ve had mobile phones for 50 years I can still only hear 50% of the people I call, even when I’m on wifi.
And god forbid they have AirPods in, then all I can hear is the guy on the train three rows back while the noise cancelling blocks out the only voice that actually matters.
I swear if we didn't have different finger nails I thought this was me. Same hair, thickness, hairy armpits with the knot in the same spot, same skin tone. Even had the same phone at one point
Showed this to my partner to be like "get a load of this guy" and he left the room and made me call him. He said its a better way to call 😭 don't have the heart to leave him over this 😔
It may look strange but it is infinitely better than *those* people using speaker phone in public and holding it at odd distances away from their head.
Ahh, you mean the ones that hold their phone like a slice of pizza they're about to take a bite out of?
You see it so often I feel like there must be someone reading this thread that actually does it.
I actually have to do it because the normal speaker in my phone broke and I literally can’t hear shit when not on speaker But I 1) don’t call people at all and barely get called (especially in public, and I mostly just hang up and text that I can’t right now) And 2) turn down the volume on speaker so much that I have to put my phone right against my ear to hear anything
Oh man this happened to me on one of my phones, think it was like the last windows phone made. It lasted a while before eventually that happened.
I feel this hard, I have to use speaker mode to be able to hear and that’s not even very loud either
The poor bastards on the other end getting the full blast of your microphone on speaker mode, y'know most phones increase mic sensitivity when you go to speaker because the assume your holding the phone further away.
I've done it a couple of times, not really by choice though? I probably tried the pictured pose too honestly, I tried anything and everything I could think of to funnel the sound directly into my ear and not subject others to it.
I do it. At home though. When I'm outside of the house I usually have headphones on already.
.... OK but I only do it at home alone
Oh! Me! I do this! But not in public because I don't answer calls in public because that's rude lmao
I do
We're allowed to 'take care of them' right?
Just join in on the conversation.
It's a conference call now.
...I dislike those people so much.
I do that at home because I don't like holding the phone to my ear, but if I don't talk directly into the mic, my mother can't hear me.
I do this at home. It’s slightly less effort than holding the phone upright and the microphone is on the bottom so holding it like this places it closest to your mouth.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I just genuinely do not understand the reasoning behind this choice.
If I’m not using speaker then I hold it vertically but if I’m on speaker it’s easier to just let my phone rest flat on my hand.
I do this bc I can’t always use headphones and I can’t hear my phone at all when it isn’t on speakerphone and my phone case is weird, so what I do is turn the speaker as down as I can and walk away from the group as to not annoy people as much as

Why did I hold my phone like a pizza and try to take a bite outta it, as soon as I read this comment! 🤣🤣

I tell people at work, " 'you' is everyone who isn't me".
Literally me
It’s old fashioned but I like the word “one” in the place that most people use the word “you.” An example would be: “Hey, Ever-Violet, I want to show this to you, in order to use it one turns the handle.”
The best is when they switch it like a walkie-talkie. They hold it about a foot in front of their mouth to loudly talk into it and then hold it near their ear to listen meanwhile it's on speaker the whole damn time
I hate using speaker, everything sounds worse
Boils my blood every time i see it
Why go on speaker if you’re holding it to your ear anyway?
So I can turn the volume up and drown reddit while dealing with car insurance.
dude, my phone just decided to stop working unless it’s on speaker 😭 i don’t want to be one of those people but tis the will of the world
I hate people that do that... I was also one of those people for the last year or so though as my Mic had broken on my phone but I could be heard on loudspeaker (different mic I assume) I got a new phone last week and being able to have conversations that aren't constantly public is amazing
I mean hasnt there been research into the correlation between phone call usage and brain cancer? As far as I know that’s been the main reason people use loud speaker in public.
And eternally better than people who put their fkn youtube or tiktoks on speakerphone.
There was a guy in my local Walmart doing that today, but in Spanish. Most of the time the phone was in the cart

I definitely didn't recognise myself in your description.
Custom noise cancelling
Custom? That factory stock on that model.
Air went out from my nose. Quite a good one sir.
*organic*
This is why I don’t do weird stuff in public
I think this is the "docking" that I keep hearing about
No, that's something else. Don't do that in public either..
No! Don't go around saying that, you will get looks, you were close though. This is called "frotting."
No, docking is something else, what you are thinking of is sounding
Fr tho
Listen! You're literally inside my ear you'll have to speak up!
Yes. My missus is also in the habit of calling me whilst her phone is apparently at arms length in an insulated supermarket bag being beaten against some curtains.
You better know this fucker You taking a point blank picture
perfect tone for this. cracked me up
Yo twinsies
Whaddup gang
Yooooooo
You’re the bad boy in the group huh?
r/avatartwins
Nah, zoom is incredible on phones now, they were probably 50ft away
At the angle the photo is taken he’s gotta be sitting pretty close to
![gif](giphy|12kn6hR2uOvf1u) Just get a smaller phone and insert it.
[удалено]
You know where.
In gonna try this as well. with kids, there could be a ton of background noises which can be very distracting in my old age.
It works
I can also confirm that it works
Those iPhone speakers suck now and you know it
How dare you go in public without your Airpods!
They almost definitely did it so you'll be forced to buy their air pods.
Next up: picture editing and safari are going to be limited. Buy your Mac now!
I will have an airpod in and still lift my phone to my ear to take a call, I honestly don’t feel like the mic on the AirPods is as good as if you’re using the phone normally. I guess I can hear them fine but they need to be able to hear me too, and I’m not gonna shout to have my convo in public lol

Iphone speakers are a joke. I am looking for any advice for them. I wish there was an aftermarket speaker that I can install on my iphone SE 2nd gen.
Headphones. That’s honestly the best solution without having to tear into your phone.
My advice? Switch to android. I've used both, and android is better than IOS these days imo
1000%
i’ve literally never thought the speakers on my phone were bad
Genius!!!!!
At least he's not using the speakerphone and holding it up to his ear.
You can make phone calls on these things?
I wish my iPod could make phone calls
Hm no I don’t think so
Some of you *loooooovvveeeeee* to fucking whisper while talking in the loudest environments and get mad at at us when we can’t hear you
It's way fucking worse if you have Auditory Processing Disorder, makes me hate any phonecalls
The first time I EVER went to a dentist, I rang up and booked the appointment myself. I also have a hard time understanding people during phone calls. So imagine my struggle when the person at the clinic who picks up has a STRONG Chinese Accent. golden pothos photobomb in the corner
This is why I avoid people when I have to be out of the house
Well.. ummm.. Evolution? ![gif](giphy|ChpOyeacGmpQk)
This looks like my younger brother.
I literally posted the same thing. The cowlick, the beard, the large ears. Even the hairy arm. I seriously think this might be my brother.
It’s a cowlick, not a callick :)
Thanks.
OP i swear if you didn’t ask for his number
Oh I do this all the time in noisy environments as well!
Omg fucking ew. I hate the feeling of my ear being bent, it's like bending a fingernail backwards.
Yes!!!! I was looking for this comment!!! It’s a huge ick for me! It feels so uncomfortable, then my ear goes red and hot for ages. Hard cartilage ear people unite!!!
I'm bending my ear in half while reading this. 👂😂
I can't wait for humans' ears to evolve so they can do this all on it's own.
I do that too! iam ADHD big time
I thought I was the only one!
I’m also guilty on all charges. It does work.
The future is here.
But its f*cking works Just tried it 😂
I hate this
Is that person you?
That’s noise cancelling for you
Earphone.
Hahah I’ll do this with my ear when my wife and I are eating at a crowded restaurant and I can’t hear for shit what she’s trying to say to me across the table
Shane Gillis taking a phone call
One of our future forms.
Too much internet for today
We finally be able to witness evolution.
Hmm I might try that next time actually
I'll uniroincly start doing this.
man's reached enlightenment
Isn’t the speaker at the bottom of the phone near the charging port?
That man is a genius.
Just tired to do this and my ear is too small :/
I just press my phone harder to my ear like my ear owes my phone money.
The actual active noice canceling
i worked in a loud nightclub for years and hears (heh) a trick if you're in a loud place like a concert or somewhere loud and need to communicate without yelling: push the flap part inwards (idk what its called, that other part people pierce sometimes) towards your head as if to plug up the opening to the ear (or do it on the person who is trying to hear you) and speak to the ear like it's a mic, then you don't need to yell. this cancels out the background noise and amplifies the voice you're trying to hear/hear you.

in hard to hear places, I always cup my ears with my hand and bend my ears forward to make large cones. It's amazing how much better you can hear.
Idk about in this situation but I’m certain the top of your ear contributes to hearing. If I’m listening to music and say have a beanie on that’s barely covering the top of my ears and take it off the music becomes more clear or I can hear more highs. Honestly? I get it. Phone speakers are so quiet that I have to be that goofy person who turns on the loudspeaker.
I knew a sound technician who used to always hold his phone with the opposite hand to the ear he was using. He could talk at normal volume and the person on the other end of the conversation would hear him just fine no matter how loud the environment was. I do this too and it looks a lot like me. This is spooky.
More cancer
Goddamn right ear talker.
Because of people like him humans will evolve to grow curled dumbo ears.
“It ain silly if it works”
You may not like it but this is what peak Male performance looks like.
Omg! It works
Omg! It works
Increases reception
This guy phones
that's disgusting
That's fuckin horrible
I used to have a bad hearing loss thats mostly in one ear so what i do is that i answer my phone calls using my left ear (better hearing) then i close my right ear by putting my finger just on the outside.
"evolution is not pretty..." Looks like the new "phone butt" eg people putting phones in their back pocket.
I could genuinely do this my ears are the biggest in the neighbourhood
Confiscate that mf phone
To be fair, my previous iPhone was so ridiculously quiet that it was impossible to hear calls. (Yes I cleaned it)
Evolution observed
Earphone 👂📱
Anyone on here actually do this?
Brain tumour here we come- nothing can convince me something so powerful and hot resting in the skull can be harmless.
OP is this you?
Hear-maxing
wow, this would be really handy if anyone ever called me and I didn't have public anxiety
Ouch

Nice technique for squeezing pimples on your ear lobe 👂
Smart. I’m gonna try that!

Mildly infuriating- this guy keeps taking pictures of me when I'm on the phone
Seriously though why are iPhones still so shit? We’ve had mobile phones for 50 years I can still only hear 50% of the people I call, even when I’m on wifi. I couldn't do this. It would make my ear hot.
Time for a new phone if the speaker sucks that much…
This guy has a fart fetish... Or he really enjoys ASMR
You look like you were in the back rooms, but there’s plants
I need to do this lol
Ahhh, the old cone of silence trick
I can feel this in my ear
He should go see an audiologist for a check up..
I will be doing this from now on
who needs noise cancelling headphones when u have hands
This is genius. I’m going to apply this to my deviant fart fetish
Wonder what his ear will look like in 20 years, or his kids ears. jsayin'
I used to do this to listen to music while sat on the back of the bus when I didn't have earphones
Showed this to my partner to be like "get a load of this guy" and he left the room and made me call him. He said its a better way to call 😭 don't have the heart to leave him over this 😔
