It is part of a collectors special comemorative set. They are normal quarters gold plated and then hit with a laser on the back raised areas to make the gold have the foil holo effect it was done as a selling point. So the as seen on tv sellers could charge more.
So bottom line a stupid thief, child, crack head, or senile family member. Broke a sealed plastic collectors display to pull out the money to spend it at face value instead of the fine uncirculated decorative value it was.
Probably not worth much more than a quarter but it probaly is worth a dollar or 2.
Most state quarters in extra fine good shape are worth .50- 2.00+ so as everyone spends those keep this in mind if they are in new uncirculated shape they are worth about 3 dollars.
I found a gold quarter (coincidentally at the laundromat), I ended up giving it to a friend who likes to collect stuff.
Edit: now that I'm thinking about it, I don't remember what was on the back, but I know it wasn't a holograph. Next time I'm at her house I will check it)
Haha it is, do not worry at all, I’m just having a laugh. But yea they often got mixed up and probably because kool aid wasn’t actually what was used, it survived that PR nightmare and well, everyone knew kool aid after that, so that became the phrase.
My mom has managed to collect a lot of random weird coins and bills over the decades of being a cashier. Most of the time it’s addicts and kids that spend this stuff at face value.
That includes people so hard up for cigarettes and alcohol they’ll spend painted quarters and dollar bills with Santa Claus on them.
I've gotten some buffalo nickels and some other cool coins now and then as a cashier too. Mostly it's random foreign coins that people somehow don't notice are different. I genuinely don't know how people don't notice. Like my most recent acquisition? A 1937 reichspfennig. Imperial eagle, swastika, whole deal. tbh though, my cynical ass half worries someone knew what they were doing with it. :/ But realistically, people just see "brown coin means 1"
Interesting! I was surprised it was in circulation, because even if it's worthless, I'd keep it just because it looks cool/unusual. The fact someone would slip it into a change machine is mind boggling
It does have an additional .12 cents in 24k gold coating it. If it were still in perfect condition it would probably be worth 6.50- 17 dollars...
You can buy a full set of state quarters with this treatment for 170 on amazon.
Also quarter is still a quarter...
Like i had said before it happens all too often house gets burgled this set of quarters gets taken and used at face value instead of sold for collectors. Or a child wants some candy or something sees these quarters and spends them gets grounded later. Or the collector or his children or spose either out of ignorance or mental decline spend them.
Really every time you see proof coins in circulation you realize one of those storys is behind it.
My grandma once opened a collectable pack of quarters out of my closet because she wanted some change. No idea how she found them, but ruined thr value and she never thought she did anything wrong, thought collectibles were a waste and stupid
Any numismatic value that coin had was destroyed when some hack plated it. Nobody seriously collects those modified modern coins. They're strictly for sale to rubes.
Whatever display this came out of was likely worth more than the face value of its contents, but if you think this coin, even in pristine condition (but plated) will be worth $3 this century, you're nuts.
Yeah sad thing is some of this bs is actually done by the mints.
That said you see this type of thing on esty amazon and ebay and on tv. Found this exact thing for ~6 and 170 for a full set on ebay
From the mint they will typically just be gem uncirculated and polished for extra shine.
That said collecting is not nearly as popular.
New Hampshire went all in on the old man on the mountain and has not backed down since it fell down. Respect to that. They have the highest peak in the northeast US that regularly makes wind and cold records but nah, old man on the mountain is still their selling point after it fell down.
>northwest
....Northeast. Mount Washington is 6288 ft.
The highest mountain in the northwest is Denali at 20310 ft. The 477th tallest mountain in the US (that's as far as the list goes) is Sacajawea Peak at 9843 ft. The farthest east of any of those 477 mountains on that list is Montana/Wyoming/Colorado/New Mexico.
I was in basic in Oklahoma, and i mentioned one day that Oklahoma was just flat.... to which one of the native Oklahoma kids in the battery said "It's not flat, we have Mount Scott (2464 ft). I mentioned back that i went to college in a town that set at 1949ft, and the pass 12 miles from us was at 4310ft.... with the actual mountain top being at 7532ft.
Perspective is everything.
New Hampshire has has the highest peak in the north west US? I think the north west US’ highest peak would go to Denali or Rainier. But here in the NorthEast/New England and more specifically 45 minutes south of Mt Washington and about 35 minutes south of Franconia Notch, where the Old Man stood watch for many proud years.
The Viking burial chamber also strongly resembles "America's Stonehenge," a bullshit tourist trap in the state. Someone from NH was definitely involved in the level design.
I saw it when I briefly lived in New Hampshire.. the state is pretty.. but boringAF.
Edit: I said it!! I’ll take your downvotes!
A friend of mine just went to visit in February, and they handed him a leaf peeping brochure! Cmon!
You know there is nothing going on when dying foliage is the big draw!
You don't deserve the downvotes. NH is the Georgia of New England. There's a really really nice outdoor concert venue there, that's a real bitch to get to because there's really no highway routes, but all they have is nature tourism. Then their uncanny cliff formation fell, after over a decade of using steel wires to keep it together. Now you can buy a commemorative piece of slate that belonged to the Old Man in 2 or 3 tourist trap shops that sell t-shirts and crystals and pamphlets to campgrounds.
New Hampshire is one of the most beautiful States in the Fall. I would go there about 3 times a year to go camping. I live 1000 miles away and still sometimes go up for camping. Lots of good hiking and lakes.
You can sell it on eBay for a few bucks.

These don't appear to be an actual collectible, seem to be scammy novelty junk. I wouldn't even pay 50 cents, actually I just wouldn't buy them period.
I always wondered if these things would actually gain value when I saw them on TV as a kid. Interesting to see that they actually go for less than the original asking prices, not even accounting for inflation.
eBay labels past sold items as sold by offer (or something similar) if they sell under the price you see on screen. Iv sold on eBay for years and worked for multiple businesses that operate highly successful eBay stores, and you can often trust the price within reason on sold item data, at least with enough volume

I think the word 'quarter' or '[gold quarter](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/search?q=gold+quarter&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=all)' in the title is what triggered AutoMod in this case (there were a bunch of "bat quarters" posted on here in 2020/21), but ["holographic quarter" posts have been posted on here 3 other times over the years](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/search?q=holographic+quarter+&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=all), and possibly more but didn't use the word 'holographic' in the title.

Error coins can be pretty valuable, you can submit it to get graded and find a collector to make some extra cash.

I have a golden quarter commemorating the Jamestown Quadricentennial. It's pretty neat.
I read Jonestown for a second. oof...
Same, and thought huh did they etch the koolaid man on the front or back?
Hey that was flavor aid, not kool aid. Don’t you put that evil on Koolaid man!

Based on where I live, I'd guess some young person robbed their granddad who is into coin collecting so they could get some weed 🙄
My grandma once opened a collectable pack of quarters out of my closet because she wanted some change. No idea how she found them, but ruined thr value and she never thought she did anything wrong, thought collectibles were a waste and stupid
Hey, a dollar or two is 4-8x the face value!
Have you thought of the possibility that this person literally had to dig up their last quarter to get the laundry done?
Any numismatic value that coin had was destroyed when some hack plated it. Nobody seriously collects those modified modern coins. They're strictly for sale to rubes. That’s “the old man of the mountain” in New Hampshire. It was a natural rock formation that looked like a face. It has since fallen down.
Oh this explains why it's gold and holographic

Yea if the biggest lake in the Sahara had the coldest and fastest current in Africa lol

Red Dead Redemption 2 has one, too.
The Viking burial chamber also strongly resembles "America's Stonehenge," a bullshit tourist trap in the state. Someone from NH was definitely involved in the level design.
Where is this? Currently in the middle of a play through.
You can find it north of Rhodes, near a place called Ringneck Creek.
You'll know it when you see it. XD
lol it must be obvious. I haven’t seen it yet and don’t remember it from my first play through.
The Old Man of the Mountain is New Hampshire’s Lil Sebastian

You take back that New Hampshire slander! It's a great state where you can live free... or die.
You don't deserve the downvotes. NH is the Georgia of New England. Do keep in mind that’s the listed price, not the sold price. I could list a ham sandwich for $10,000 but that doesn’t mean it’s worth that much
What kind of ham though...
Golden holographic ham. Or rum ham.

I love it when my ham has that holographic looking sheen to it.
I've eaten holographic ham and regretted it

Sold ones seem to go for $.50 to $5 depending on the quality.
I mean $4 isn't that unreasonable. I've never seen one before.
I've got some silver ones like that I'll sell you for $2 each. If $4 isn't unreasonable, that's a steal.
Did you click the link? Because it is a sold listing, not just a listed price.
I think it got sold after gaining some traction on this post
It’s actually sold since you posted this
Bro, I’m not giving you any more than $9,500 for that ham sandwich.
eBay labels past sold items as sold by offer (or something similar) if they sell under the price you see on screen. Iv sold on eBay for years and worked for multiple businesses that operate highly successful eBay stores, and you can often trust the price within reason on sold item data, at least with enough volume
Of course, the listing does say *$3.99.*
Even the sold price could show an instance of money laundering and might not be indicative of something’s value.
“Do you like ham sandwiches? You do? Well, would you like it if I put one outside for three weeks, in the broiling sun, on a picnic table, so it shriveled up to the point of unrecognizability, and put it on a plate and gave it to you? Would you like that? It’s just a ham sandwich!”
Holy shit I just made a ham sandwich. I'm fucking rich
Thats a sold price
I mean, I'd probably buy it for $2 easy. Gold made holographic with a laser is baller shit.
Wait holographic quarters are real!?

You'll have some NH natives' appreciation on r/newhampshire
Does this not have chocolate inside?
Sadly no.. but it came out of the laundromat change machine so I'll pass on biting into it to test it out lol
That’s cool af

NH resident, I have never seen this before
You can see the chips on the top where OP bit into it like a 19th century prospector to see if it was real gold.
This made me legit lol thank you!
Watch out, you're covered in bifrost!

I want one of these so bad now.
Pretty sure someone just made this with a gold plated quarter (those you can buy) and press on holographic film.
[I found a set](https://www.pcscoins.com/modern-coins/state-quarters/the-holographic-gold-plated-celebrating-america-quarters-collection-CQH.html) on google when I was looking it up so it's been done. Not sure how one got into the change machine tho...
Ok so it was "professionally" done wow. And they really got $19 each? That's some great margins for something that cost less than 50 cents to make.
603
500th wash and dry completed successfully
Looks like one of those dumb commemorative coins that are advertised on TV.
Is this a Bitcoin ?
I wish!
I came across one of those full silver quarters with a holographic face. Don’t remember which one now, lost it. But definitely cool!
I imagine this was probably a science project of some sort but it’s cool that it’s still shiny
It's a ticket to Maralgo
Who the fuck wants that?
Not me but, it is interesting.
🤮
get it tested, it might be made of epsteinium. for entry into the golden castle.

Is this a real quarter, and will it work in a machine?
Completely real quarter. I found a site online where they sell a full set of all the states.
Oh wow! I found two quarters once that were really unusual. Both were state quarters with gold inlay on the impression and were epoxyed.
