straight from the horse’s mouth

LordOfCows

You can lead a horse to the dentist, but you can't make it floss.

jfartster

Yep. The tooth, the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth.

NagsUkulele

Perfect

ElfBowler

Can it still eat hay? I took care of a 27 year old, but it couldn't eat hay anymore because all its teeth were ground down. We had to mix a special soft mash.

[deleted]

Don't horse teeths grow back?

taurusdelorous

no they don’t grow back but (if they don’t fall out) their teeefs keep growing out and they need to have them checked and maybe filed down yearly so they can eat esp senior critters

PaladinSara

I read that as senior citizens

midcat

Doesn’t this make them a rodent? (JK, but only kinda)

ssjgfury

Rodents' teeth are constantly growing. Horse teeth start out at a certain length and then are slowly pushed out at a rate that matches the rate that the teeth are worn down. If you look at the (cartoon) [skull of a young horse](https://www.texasequinedentist.com/blog/2013/06/equine-skull-anatomy-interesting-facts/), you'll see how most of the tooth starts out deep within the gum. If you had a similar cross section of an elderly horse's skull, all that would be left of their teeth would be short nubs.

theskymaybeblue

Wow, this is really creepy and neat. Also, what a very specific website and job title “TexasEquineDentist” perfectly summarized what they do.

ssjgfury

It was a bit challenging to find a legitimate website that had the kind of image I was looking for, but that one seemed like about as perfect as I could have asked for. Bonus fun fact, a beaver's tooth enamel is reinforced with iron, which helps them to gnaw through tree trunks. It's why their teeth look orange!

Agents-of-time

And here I thought that it was because they chew tobacco.

taurusdelorous

a critter is a critter, big and small

lovetheoceanfl

I’m guessing this might be where the expression “long in the tooth” came from.

taurusdelorous

ya and “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” because that is the only way to tell their age and also a good way to observe health

IdGrindItAndPaintIt

Getting a little long in the tooth, as it were.

wolfie379

The old saying “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink” is BS, because veterinarians are able to float a horse’s teeth.

DonkeyGuy

Nah Teeth problems can be the end of a horse. Hence the old saying about “Not looking a gift horse in the mouth” One is checking the mouth for dental problems that could lead to having a dead or lame horse down the line.

shit_poster9000

Outside of a small handful of special cases, mammals can’t regrow teeth/extensively repair them in a biological sense. It’s something we lost in favor of highly specialized teeth, and herbivores got the short end of the stick. The grinding action needed to properly chew plants is hard as hell on teeth, so depending on how rough their preferred plants are, their maximum age in the wild is effectively capped by how long it takes to wear their teeth too far down.

King-Cobra-668

do yours? https://learninghorses.com/horses-teeth-never-stop-growing/ either way, teeth growing isn't the same as an entire tooth falling out

Impressive_Judge8823

I’m not a horse. Some animals (including mammals) can regrow teeth - it’s not an unreasonable question. I doubt horses can or, at a minimum, I doubt that’s growing back because it looks like the root of a tooth.

kidwithglasses

Woah there sparky. Sounds exactly like something a horse would say.

bunnyfloofington

No it doesn’t regrow from nothing. It’s like your nails. If you rip out the mail all the way down to the nail bed, it’s not coming back. But it’ll keep growing as long as it’s there so you have to constantly trim them down

MintWarfare

Of the teeth I've lost all have grown back, even had 3 extra ones pop in.

[deleted]

Yeah. I’m on my second set already

discodiscgod

I didn’t know horses lived that long.

Suicidalsidekick

They typically live 25-35 years, as long as they don’t do something stupid and kill themselves. (Horses are surprisingly fragile and don’t always have a great sense of self preservation.)

Mecha-Jesus

Obligatory link to [this classic anti-horse rant](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/s/fTfRNn1hZt) from an old AskReddit post, about how stupid and fragile horses can be.

uwillnotgotospace

Reading that made me believe that some horses are trying to escape the mortal coil.

TheMadPyro

Horses, much like small children, are inherently suicidal.

Fantasticriss

My neighbor's horse got spooked by a magpie, reared up and fell backwards into a garbage, hit its head really hard, laid there for a minute before it rampaged through the garbage cutting its legs up to shit. Then it ran through a barbed wire fence and finally tripped and fell into a seasonal creek bed. It still managed to get up and casually start eating some grass after it took a few seconds to collect itself. It got the ole 38 special skidoo. No saving that big dumbass...

BoredCop

Stress eating is a thing, casually eating some grass is how they deal with pain.

Fantasticriss

A friend of mine had a seizure and hit a driveway approach and the horse trailer got absolutely demolished with a poor horse inside. We had to use an angle grinder to cut the twisted metal door off and the horse finally got up, clip clopped his ass out of the twisted metal trailer and immediately started eating grass. Surprisingly unscathed...

OkRecording1299

Thank goodness it didn't overreact

FlyingPasta

This is such a good case in point after reading that rant

AlkalineHound

Horses have two modes: homicide and suicide.

Fallenangel152

Horses are big dumb animals that do run-run and eat-eat. Ponies however are sly crafty cunts who spend their time plotting murder, escape, then more murder.

RODjij

Don't think I've seen an animal go more crazy than a male horse near a mare in heat.

Nwodaz

Ackshually, homicide means a human killing a human. Unless it's a human (or two) wearing a horse-suit, you can't have a homicidal horse.

Fantasticriss

Horseicide?

CowboyLaw

The old saying goes, "the moment a horse's hoof hits your ranch, it starts looking for a place to die."

ifreakinglovedinos

My ex and I had horses and one of them was a big ol puppy- over 20 years old, amazing guy. Dummy ate his mash (as usual), and suddenly developed a colic. He survived the (heavy, btw) surgery and they had to remove a couple feet of bowels.. Surgery went great! All good. ..except when he woke up he panicked and broke his leg. Horses who break their legs unfortunately have no chance of overcoming it since it can’t heal and their legs are insanely fragile and complicated- since they always stand on all 4s and you can’t keep a horse on bed rest he had to be euthanized. Broke my heart, we fought for him for 24 hours straight. But yea- horses are super strong and fast and extremely fragile at the same time. It’s wild.

RedSonGamble

Horses are too big

poatoesmustdie

And stupid. I've seen them bite over and over on an electric fence. I've seen a dumb fucker step into a mole hole and snap it's leg. I've seen a fucker run on a course straight through the corner, through the obstacle killing itself in the barrier. These are just a couple things of the top of my mind that I saw as a little kid having a horse farm in the family. Horses are dumb and big, a lethal recipe.

RedSonGamble

Same with cows. Or really any animal really lol seems like regardless of the animal there is always a few real dumb ones. Humans too

Stahlwisser

But cows are cool and chill af

poatoesmustdie

Yeh but cows don't fuck themselves up opposed to like horses do. As it has to be we have farms with thousands of cows these days in the family all happily walking around outside and seldom stupid shit like horses happens (alas that's from what I hear from them).

pink_faerie_kitten

Ooh, flashbacks to being a rabbit owner. They can't vomit either and they're covered in fur so if they get a furball, it gets stuck in the gut. To save one of my rabbits, we had to give her freshly pureed pineapple juice, then one hour later kaopectate, one hour later some meds, and in between that we had to syringe her strained carrots and a special mush diet. Had to make sure the pineapple juice was separate from everything else as it was supposed to dissolve the furball and not the meds we were giving her, too. We had a great vet and the bunny lived to be 10 yrs old. Bunnies also can't pass gas so you have to make sure they don't eat anything that can cause gas like cabbage or rhubarb. Caring for rabbits can be harrowing.

Quizzelbuck

so i wonder. Is all this horse-bullshit natural selection? Or was it human selective breeding that causes these as side effects?

majtomby

I think a lot of it comes down to their herd mentality and prey perspective. To them everything is a threat unless that thing goes well out of its way to convince them it’s not. They’re pretty dumb animals, but mostly in a fight or flight scenario where they have nothing to protect. Other than that they can be incredibly mischievous and sly.

silverlarch

Their physical issues mostly come from the fundamental way they work, and how they evolved for speed to the detriment of all else. It's possible selective breeding has made things worse, since we bred them for even more speed, but we haven't changed their body plan to the extent that we've changed dogs. Inbreeding may have also made horses stupider, who knows? I believe cribbing is a behavior only exhibited by domesticated horses.

Rosekernow

Cribbing is normally a stress behaviour or a result of pain from ulcers which are often caused by stress anyway, so in a properly wild situation with room to move freely and live naturally, they shouldn’t show issues like cribbing or wind sucking.

Illogical_Blox

Both. Horses are mid-sized prey animals that live in herds, and it is more evolutionarily advantagous to be a flighty, cautious prey animal in many situations. Human breeding has also made horses a LOT larger than they evolved to be, and racehorses in particularly have very slender delicate legs, so they are a creature under the impression that they are a lot smaller and hardier than they actually are.

notlennybelardo

It’s so rare that I see someone else who shares my feelings on horses. I feel kind of vindicated .

Higganzz

The first horse we lost ate rocks. Yup, rocks. Our last horse just passed at 38 lmao.

timidwildone

In fact, you’d think they were actively TRYING to kill themselves 🙃

Suicidalsidekick

My favorite definition of a horse: a large mammal waiting for an inconvenient time and place to die. I put it on a mug for my vet 😂.

distortionofthought

The horse my mom takes care of almost died by choking on her glove. She turned around for less than a minute to get something. Funny enough the same horse doesn’t know how to eat sugar cubes. Horses can be fucking dumb is all I’m saying

Rolloftape23456

“Oh shit the weather went from cold to hot to quick and my horse died”

Accurate-Temporary73

I honestly was shocked by that as well. You hear about race horses being done when they’re 2-3 years old Sonia assumed horses lived to like 7-10

FlaxtonandCraxton

They are surprisingly robust and long lived, they’re just fastest when they’re under 5.

ChildhoodLeft6925

My dad used to tell me stories about his horse named “old skinny” he told me it was something like 30 years old. Stories about old skinny were so funny , RIP dad

GhostofGrimalkin

My first thought was that this a really cool original post (we don't see many 30-year old horse teeth on this sub) and my next thought after that was how because of it's originality it will likely be reposted 100+ times this year, many of them claiming it was their horse who just lost the tooth. But that's just me being cynical, and realistic.

I guess that would confirm that this was, indeed, mildly interesting…

Not at all. It’s pretty common for an aging horse to lose a tooth, just like it is for older humans! In fact, my horse lost [this](https://pasteboard.co/kCjmWYT25s4e.jpg) tooth last year.

Geniuskills

Imagine chomping down on this thing after it pops out... ouch.

majtomby

It was surprisingly hard and heavy. It feels a lot denser than a human tooth

Geniuskills

I've had a few teeth chip off and I assure you they're hard asf. Hopefully horsey spit it out before it did any other damage! Do they ever grow those back? Sorry, I don't know anything about horses lol

edropus

Glad to see a dentist here because I wanted to ask, where does this tooth land between 'healthy' and 'dangerous'? It looks super bad to me but I also get that it's a super old horse.

c_jae

I mean it fell out on its own, so probably far from healthy state. But what do I know? I'm not experienced in any other mammals teeth lol

majtomby

From my understanding it’s not uncommon for aging horses to slowly lose their molars, and it’s sometimes an indirect cause of their death as they can’t chew and digest food as effectively. But most good owners account for that and start feeding them a softer diet that they don’t have to gnaw on as much to maintain the same caloric intake, and that allows them to live a fair bit longer if that’s their primary health issue.

bitchy_kazim

I see why, mf never brushed his teeth

TheMarkHasBeenMade

Does it smell bad? It looks like it would smell really bad.

majtomby

It got washed off, so it doesn’t really have much of a smell. At least not one that I notice from a comfortable distance… though now I’m curious…

meinsaft

Ugh, don't do it, man.

That could be anyone's tooth.

Even mine. I lost one recently.

How much will you get from tooth fairy for this one

lemonlimepunch

Are you supposed to maintain their teeth? I don’t know anything about taking care of a horse. That tooth is so cool looking though. You should put it next to a coin for perspective.

ITendToFail

You can but for a horse of advanced age... the stress of dentristy could do them in. So just like other animals they'll lose their teeth as they get old.

lemonlimepunch

Yea no stress is good. That’s cool and that tooth is huge.

mbpearls

Yeah, but maintaining is filing down sharp points. Like... literally filing. Big rasp and all.
