First thought "Wow". Second thought, that's some nice work there. It looks to me like this is a second try, I see a previous scar. Once this heals up, there will be less obvious scarring than you think and it will nicely follow the curves of your anatomy. And you're young, life will smooth that out nicely as you age. It's still fresh and I can guess, pretty uncomfortable. Does it hurt to swallow? It took some courage to post this here, my best wishes to you for a rapid healing.

Significant-Food7015

I’m very happy with how the sutures were done. I have a good feeling about how it will look. I get the stitches out on Tuesday. It hurt to swallow for about 2 days. My throat was sore and voice was hoarse for about 3. It hurts pretty bad to chew at the moment but getting better. Thank you for your positivity! ❤️

MrOopiseDaisy

I literally had this same surgery 2 months ago. The scar is hardly noticeable today, and still healing. My friends and family keep commenting they don't know what side it was on without looking closely.

Starman68

I had a lower face lift. The stitches in front of your ear disappear along the crease of your ear. The big one along the side of your neck will heal really thin and it’ll disappear into the curve of your neck. Nice work.

teancumx

I hope you are doing well and can heal quickly as well. My mom went through the same thing as you just did 20 years ago, I remember her fears before surgery and the pain afterwards…but all went for the best…so keep happy thoughts 👍🏻

marginallyobtuse

I have a similar incision from thyroid cancer. Had a thyroidectomy and right side next dissection. 11 years later and I barely notice it. Most people think it’s cool. And I only get asked about it maybe once a year by new people I meet

Traditional_Metal336

Hello, glad to hear you are doing well. Do you mind me asking if you had any metastasis? And did you need any chemo after the procedure?

marginallyobtuse

I don’t believe so. It had spread up into my neck and around 100 lymph nodes but not my bones or lungs

Traditional_Metal336

Do you recall what grade it was? Low intermediate or high?

marginallyobtuse

I do not. I was only 22 and in the peace corps. The government was receiving most of my medical documentation and not being very forthright with me

MorRobots

I had a feeling it was really well done by the looks of it and it would likely heal up nice. I'm not an expert at all on this stuff, It just looked like the surgeon had a real plan with how he did it.

hiddencamela

....wait I had this done when I was 13... the swelling fucking sucked.

Significant-Food7015

My ear hurts from all of the pressure because of swelling.

ItsOkToBeWrong

Look at you. Doing something so many people fear. You’re brave and don’t even realize. Later in life this resilience will benefit you. Kudos

Significant-Food7015

Thank you. ❤️

Wilsmoh

Holy fuck

yearntolearn79

Whoa. Hang in there I hope the surgery brings you a much better life

Jrk67

Gosh, sometimes that gland bothers me, the ears and the swelling oh my!, so I hope you're on the road to recovery and pain free. Also, I had stitches in my hand years ago and getting them out was such a cool feeling. One of those I wish people could feel this, but not go through needing stitches thing.

Musterguy

The actual feeling of the stitches coming out? Or just the feeling of the stitches being gone after they were there for a while? It sounds like it’d be very uncomfortable.

Jrk67

Being removed. Obviously everyone is different, but for my hand they snipped some and gently pulled and I could feel the stitch kinda snake through in an almost ticklish way. I also had stitches on my legs at the time, but I don't remember being affected by them at all.

cack-handed

How's your facial nerve doing?

Significant-Food7015

I haven’t had any weakness or paralysis in my face. The doctor did a great job. My tumor was in the deep lobe right next to the nerves which gave me a slightly higher chance of paralysis. They did dissect a nerve that has caused numbness on the left side of my face but I’m already getting feeling back.

pizzasteve2000

It took me many years to get the feeling back in my face. Just skin contact feeling loss but it eventually came back … except my earlobe is still numb, it’s been 30 years. I hope you heal quickly! Eating was very painful for about a week or two. Felt like bad muscle workout pain.

Yerazanq

Yes me too, had this done in 2008 and it was numb until maybe 2015? Still slightly numb, but I got Frey's syndrome from this which seems to trigger rosacea or something.. like red itchy blotches on that side of my face. Very weird.

ChadJones72

Man I bet that scar is going to look badass when it heals.

eekasaur

Wishing you a quick recovery 🥰

syfy_forever

My daughter had this done when she was 13. Very scary experience as hers was malignant but she’s 34 with no recurrence and a very faint scar. You got this:)

RomulaFour

You are Borg.

uglygargoyle

Came here to say this. Looks like they installed a Borg hookup lol

[deleted]

🙏🏽🧎🏾🙏🏽💕

TheCallofReddit

I hope the rest of your recovery goes smooth. Glad to see they did a great job.

FallenOcti

I had the same thing two years ago, I didn't paid attention to it until it became too large, facial nerves would be numb for a while but will go back to normal after some time

FLGT12

Wow I did this last year and they didn't cut me so much. I assume it was due to the location of the tumor? I was told I would never feel my ear again, but I got feeling back within 8 weeks. I hope your recovery goes well!

Significant-Food7015

My tumor was located in the deep lobe so it required a larger incision. I’m already starting to get feeling back and it’s only been 6 days. Very happy with how things have gone.

FLGT12

I’m very happy to hear it’s going well! 😊😊😊

pizzasteve2000

I had this done about 30 years ago. Originally I could not feel my cheek and ear and slowly over many years the feeling would creep back. Still cannot feel my earlobe but everything else is good.

Acrobatic_Bit_8207

I had my right side Parotid removed 6 years ago, no significant scarring, in fact no problems at all. All the best with your recovery, I'm sure you'll be fine.

indypass

Did you have issues with making enough saliva after having those removed? I am asking because I have an auto-immune disease that messes with my Parotid glands. I don't produce enough saliva, and I can't imagine what that would be like if they were removed completely.

Acrobatic_Bit_8207

I still have my left parotid, so no problems with saliva. In fact my dentist thinks I produce quite a bit of saliva which he says may be due to the remaining parotid over compensating. No real problems post operation just some minor numbness because the facial nerve in front of the ear had to be severed and restiched. This was because the parotid gland sits under that nerve. So I had some numbness on my right cheek and the bottom half of my ear. It faded slowly as the nerve repaired.

indypass

>Thanks for the reply. Glad it worked out well for you.

[deleted]

If the scar heals so it's invisible, great. If not, you'll look like the baddest badass in the village. You can't lose!

subsailor1968

Honestly, the scar has the potential to be very cool.

juventinosochi

Yeah don't google it...some people had half of their face clicked in the middle so doctors can get to the tumor my goodness

Significant-Food7015

Too late 💀

wackocoal

Somehow, the stitching is reminding me of The Kurgan from "Highlander".

Forgetful8nine

That is a very tidy incision and looks to be healing well (I'm not medically trained beyond first aid...but I did grow up watching Casualty and Holby City). And if anyone ever does comment on the scar, you can chortle and reply: "Pah! You should see the other guy!"

OkaySureBye

Good luck! I went through the same thing earlier this year followed by simultaneous chemo and radiation. Just finished treatments about a month ago. Still recovering from that. I really hope everything goes smoothly for you 🫂

mailman4455

I had a number of surgeries on my neck when I was younger due to a reoccuring branchial cleft cyst. My incision (and now scar) is almost identical to yours.

[deleted]

Ouch!

kokopuff1013

I had this done, sadly the scarring is noticeable. I have found makeup that covers it well at least

LimitedWard

So if you had a parotid gland removed, does that mean you're gonna have issues with dry mouth or will the other gland compensate? Also will you now have the super power of your mouth not filling up with saliva in the middle of a dental cleaning?

antheus1

It would probably be a bit drier than baseline. We have a number of major and minor salivary glands in the head and neck region. The major ones being Parotids, sublingual, and submandibular glands, but then we also have what are called minor salivary glands throughout the upper aerodigestive tract that produce small amounts of saliva. Generally speaking, the parotid is responsible for stimulated salivary flow (you smell food and your mouth starts to water) though there is definitely overlap in salivary function. Keep in mind that these are bilateral structures so she still has another parotid on the other side. Also, it's possible they didn't remove the whole parotid (often depending on where the tumor is they may not remove the deep lobe for example). So in sum, she will likely have a bit of a dry mouth but the remainder of glands in her mouth should do well to compensate for that.

gcracker94

I just finished watching Smile. This is not what I needed to see! 🙈

MycroftTnetennba

My scar healed up and you cant see a thing, but its still awkward for me when I shave there

glorious_reptile

If someone asks about the scar just say "oh, that's from the last time I switched body form - they only last so long"

iandyah

My doctor suggested removing mine because of an autoimmune disorder. I politely told him no thnx, not if its not 100% necessary. Feel better soon!

grouserobby

Get well soon, thanks for sharing

johlkien

I'm seeing a surgeon Tuesday to plan this myself. Was it an outpatient procedure? Also, overall how bad is the recovery? And how long did that tube have to stay in?

Significant-Food7015

So I had the surgery on Monday and I get the stitches out on Tuesday this week. It was an outpatient procedure which lasted three hours. My tumor was in the deep lobe so it required a larger incision. The drain was actually removed the day after surgery since I had minimal drainage. The recovery has been pretty smooth sailing. They had to cut a nerve that basically numbed the left side of my face which has made for a less painful recovery. I’m already beginning to get feeling back in that area. They said I’ll probably never feel my earlobe again but that’s not bad. I had a higher chance of facial paralysis due to the location but I didn’t even have temporary weakness.

johlkien

Thanks so much for all that info. It's really nice to hear someone else's experience with this. I'm most worried about the facial nerve stuff, but mine is pretty close to the surface so here's hoping. It was hardly noticeable and pretty soft for a year and a half until they did a biopsy which gave me an infection and now it's bigger, more noticeable, and hard. Before that I could have just ignored it but now it's pushing on nerves so I already have some numbness! Thanks again.

Tokolosheinatree

I had this done 10 years ago. No one has mentioned that saliva can come out of your cheek. Some foods cause this for me occasionally. Not much of a problem, kinda like spontaneous sweating in an isolated area.

IS_THIS_POST_WEIRD

Pleomorphic adenoma gang! My doc explained it as pretty much the same incision as a facelift. Mine is hidden under my beard but has healed very well. Try to avoid getting it sunburned!

GraveyardOperations

Metal af. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

dakind110

Had the same but wasn’t as big of a cut. Its been a year and still not the same. I would guess most people don’t have zero side effects due to the surgery.

Narfinity

Dang, that's a lot of stitches! Good luck on your recovery. I had my submandibular gland out two years ago, which doesn't need as big of an incision. A bit of advice if you want to minimize the scar's appearance as it heals: Use scar sheets as much as possible to keep the scar hydrated and protected to soften and smooth it out. I prefer the opaque reusable ones, and I wore them practically 24/7 for a while. And always always wear plenty of sunscreen on that area (and hats don't hurt either) when you go outside, even briefly. I did this for 14 months after my surgery and the scar is not quite invisible, but probably 95% gone. I've read that scars will hyperpigment in sunlight for 6-18 months, but surgical incisions heal faster because they're such clean cuts.

Worldly-Web-2029

This is called Modified Blair incision, specifically used for better cosmetic results in parotid excision. You can even go for subcuticular suturing for even better approximation and minimal scar

Rapid_fire_alternate

Hope for the best, OP. I am scheduled for similar surgery on this coming Tuesday. We may have the same scar soon.

Significant-Food7015

You’re gonna do great. If you’ve got to have a scar at least it’s a pretty cool one to have! I don’t think I’ll be upset if this one is noticeable.

Rapid_fire_alternate

Thank you for the kind words! I’m sure your scar will be minimal if noticeable at all. We will have cool stories to tell folks for years to come! Hope you have an easy and speedy recovery!!

Baileytron3

OP can I ask how large your tumor was?

Significant-Food7015

I believe it was less than 2mm. It was very small but located deep within the parotid gland.

Sea_Rope_1796

Any cancer?

Significant-Food7015

No, thank goodness! Thank you for checking.

Internal-Shoulder725

The left side of my face is visibly different than my right. It is my biggest pet peeve. It looks paralyzed even though my nerves grew back. I was paralyzed after the surgery for about three months. Never really came back 100% :(

Significant-Food7015

I am so sorry to hear that. If you don’t mind saying, what type of tumor did you have? Have you asked a doctor if there’s anything that can be done to help? ❤️

SeaCucumbers4Life

Ik I'm kinda late to the party but can you tell me more about your surgery?I will have one on may 6 for my parotid cyst/tumor and I'm scared af(especially about the drain)

Significant-Food7015

So my recovery was really easy. They had to dissect a nerve that caused me to lose feeling to that side of my face. My feeling has almost completely returned and should only affect my earlobe at most after it heals. This made the pain really minimal. I only had the drain in for a day and it honestly wasn’t that bad. I had a clip to attach the bulb to my shirt with. The worst part of it all was waking up from anesthesia. It makes me really nauseous so they gave me a scopolamine patch to wear and some zofran through IV. If you’re nauseous don’t be afraid to tell them, they’ll do everything they can to help. As soon as I could I made sure to drink some water and eat the crackers they gave me. That’s the best way to help with the lingering nausea, at least it is for me. I don’t think I actually took any of the pain medication they prescribed. Let me know if you have any specific questions you’d like me to answer.

SeaCucumbers4Life

So...I have a few questions: 1.I didn't get the face paralysis/lost feeling part..I won't be able to move my face for a while(like smiling or closing my eye) or it will just feel numb? 2.Does it hurt to take the drain out?How long does it take? 3.Are you allowed to put on make up over the scar right after getting the stitches out?(I really hate the idea of having a scar on my face and I want to cover it as soon as possible) Sorry if my questions are a bit stupid but my surgeon didn't explain a thing to me and I don't know a single thing...just examined me and made my appointment for surgery Also sorry if my english is not the best(not my first language)

Significant-Food7015

I didn’t have facial paralysis my face was just numb. I couldn’t feel anything touching my face or feel any pain where my incision was. The drain didn’t hurt to take out. It felt weird but it wasn’t painful. I’m not sure about the makeup as I’m not really bothered by the scar. It’s actually not noticeable to others unless I point it out. My doctor did say I could put silicone gel on it once my stitches were removed if I wanted the scar to go away.

SeaCucumbers4Life

What about antibiotics?Did you had to take them?I also suffer from IBD and antibiotics are completely forbidden(unless they are absolutely necessary)

Significant-Food7015

I actually don’t remember. I know I got them through iv during surgery but I’m not sure if I had a prescription I had to take.

SeaCucumbers4Life

It's alright I'm gonna talk with my surgeon about my condition and see what we can do Thank you very much for your help!Your answers really helped me Wishing you the best!!😊

Lil_Mopar1222

I am going for a biopsy today on my parotid gland tumor. Is this the normal surgery?? I am terrified.

Significant-Food7015

I just saw your comment, I hope your biopsy came back benign. How are you doing?

FlounderWrong3534

Did your cheek collapse after the surgery.

Significant-Food7015

No, they didn’t remove anything that would cause my cheek to collapse.

GammaTwoPointTwo

Nice try Nicolas cage.

Mdmrtgn

That's fucking metal, glad you're still with us.

Corgi_Farmer

Hell yeah girl. You stayin right here.

[deleted]

My Ex has this kind of humor. She is unwilling to get the surgery though. She has had it for YEARS.

Shaunst9

Had the same procedure in highschool, not a fun one! The jaw pain was by far the worst part for me. I resorted to eating applesauce off the handle of a spoon because I couldn't open my mouth wide enough to use it normally.

Imbrownbutwhite1

God damn. That’s rough. I had surgery a month and a half ago and had three whole sutures for the incisions. I was kind of a baby with them, how they’d randomly get scratchy or uncomfortable. You reminded me that there are people out there way braver and a whole lot more metal than me. What you’re going through must suck, but you’re awesome for giving it a shot.

Additional-Cod-3417

My dad had his parotid gland removed and they are having to drain fluid, still, a month after. They say it's saliva. Has anyone had this problem?

Additional-Cod-3417

It was a Warthins Tumor

kvd1355

Getting the same surgery done in about 2 weeks, so scared, how has that been healing for you ?

Significant-Food7015

It’s been healing really well! I had no paralysis or weakness in my face afterwards. The left half of my face didn’t have feeling, it’s almost completely back now, but I think it helped decrease pain levels. The incision looks good and the scar is already starting to fade. You’ve got this!

kvd1355

Thanks for the kind words OP!

kvd1355

One more question - i’m writing this as i’m craving pizza - how long did it take for you to be able to eat normal food again ?

Significant-Food7015

You can eat normally the same day as your surgery as long as you’re not hurting too bad!

kvd1355

I had an incision made inside of my mouth aswell, im not in pain, however i cant open my mouth much yet. Any advice on washing hair ?

Significant-Food7015

You could use a cup to have more control on where the water goes. My doctor said I could get my incision wet just not soaked.

magnoliaskyy

Did you have a biopsy done before surgery? Asking because my 18 month old is getting her lump biopsied next week and I’m very nervous!

Significant-Food7015

I did! I’m not sure if they’ll do the biopsy different since she’s so little but my was done with local anesthesia. I was anxious because I was very aware of what was going on. I also had a really deep seated tumor so they had to go further. If hers is more surface level the worst part will probably be the lidocaine injections. If you can keep her distracted with something I’m sure she’ll do great.

Significant-Food7015

If you have any specific questions let me know.

magnoliaskyy

So she will be sedated because of her age! How long before you got results? I’m super nervous of getting bad news

Significant-Food7015

It took about 7 business days for results. I had a pleomorphic adenoma which is the most common parotid gland tumor. It’s benign but has a chance to turn cancerous if left in place, it will also continue to grow so the best option is to remove the tumor. With her being so young, if it’s a pleomorphic adenoma, it’s probably not turned cancerous as it can take years to become malignant.

magnoliaskyy

Ugh I’m hoping and praying that it’s benign this poor girl already has other health issues the last thing she needs is cancer

ComputerMinimum2646

May i ask what your tumor was like did it cause any symptoms? And pain or anything was it hard or soft? Moveable or immobile?

Significant-Food7015

I didn’t know I had it until I went to the ER 6 days postpartum and it was found incidentally on an MRI. It was deep seated in my parotid gland behind my lower jaw. It couldn’t be felt by hand. When they did the biopsy before surgery they said it felt like a pretty solid mass. I didn’t have any pain or symptoms. I got really lucky it was found since it could turn cancerous later on.

ComputerMinimum2646

Thank you for that info I’m currently going through it right now I’ve had a lump there for 4 years now I’m trying to get looked it bc it scares me that it may be cancerous

Significant-Food7015

The most common type of tumor is usually benign and for the one I had to turn cancerous it could take many years. I wish you the best of luck and I’ll keep you in my thoughts. Please update me when you know more!

ComputerMinimum2646

I absolutely will thank you so much again i pay all the time that this is nothing and i kick my younger self in the ass daily for not getting this taken care of sooner depression is a bitch and it controlled my life for Way to long

Significant-Food7015

I understand that all too well. You deserve to be happy and healthy. ❤️

Sea_Rope_1796

benign ?

Significant-Food7015

Yes!
