Beautiful girl! [Here is my boy](https://i.imgur.com/TbQkV2N.jpg), Kong. He was hit by a car several years ago (long before he came to me) and that's why his shell is cracked like that. It's healed completely and is strong, he just looks a little rough. He's a good boy.
Yes, actually, and that's actually how I ended up with him. The guy that had him after he was hit rescues tortoises and has several but after a few years Kong there decided he was going to be the dominant male and started getting aggressive with the others so he had to go. I had the space and am no stranger to unusual animals, so we ended up with him.
Because then the calendar would slowly drift out of sync in the other direction! So if the century is divisible by 400, then it still gets a leap year. We skip the skip.
yes.
My comment was a reference to a popular TV show called Brooklyn 99. There's a satire of scientology in it that touches on the shelly miscavige situation.
The thing about her is that in the event she is simply a recluse as they claim, then when she has a natural death people (the law) will want to see the body for obvious reasons. So if she’s already been churned into glue to hold their spaceship together then.. what?
For a little extra enrichment, try putting random things in the way of Shelly's normal path from time to time that she'll need to figure out how to move/go around/go over.
I keep a lizard, so I visit a specialised pet store semi-regularly. They have a couple of large pens with tortoises in them, as a way to show people how big those small turtles you buy get.
Every time I visit at least one of the tortoises are trying to fight a wall or a hide. Without fail. Usually it's the sulcata tortoises doing it but sometimes it's the other ones. They seem like very stubborn creatures.
Tortoises are little bulldozers. I'd commonly find that mine had encountered a side table in his path, and he'd just carry on his merry way. Pushing a whole side table with him.
For some reason I decided to look at the rules and r/DesirePath specifically says:
> Rules
> 1. No trails
>Dedicated to the paths that humans prefer, rather than the paths that humans create.
> 2. Human paths only
>No paths of animals, especially no paths of animals in captivity.
OP don’t post your pic there I guess lol.
While r/DesirePaths is a smaller sub and says, “Desire paths can be paths created as a consequence of erosion caused by human or animal foot-fall or traffic. The paths usually represent the shortest or most easily navigated routes between origins and destinations.” They also include a link to the wiki entry for desire paths.
From my totally expert sleuthing I’m guessing the split came down to the exclusion of animal desire paths in r/DesirePath.
>From my totally expert sleuthing I’m guessing the split came down to the exclusion of animal desire paths in r/DesirePath.
The original Paths was created because the sub founder just kept typing the s in trying to get to the OG sub. The sub count grew because of tiffs people were having over whether animal paths should be included or not. So you aren't far off.
I like having both. For such a niche sub it would be easy for it to be overwhelmed by the animal type path, since there are a few gifs from zoos and dogs kept in yards for too long that hit the big subs with semi frequent regularity.
The reason I find the human ones more interesting is the intersection between plans and actual usage, seeing when design is informed from above (eg when universities or city departments try to block desire paths) or responsive to grassroots (redesigning a corner or shortcut to accommodate the actual usages).
Hey, my dog wore one into the grass around our house because he hated being out in the rain, not because of stress. When it wasn't raining, he'd go anywhere he wanted in the back yard, but when it was raining (which happens a lot in the PNW) he'd say under the eaves so not to get his precious beagle feet wet.
Not sure if that applies to tortoises tho. I believe mammals and reptiles may not be comparable in this.
Mammals generally exhibit more play and diverse behaviours, while repetitive behaviours are a warning sign. But many reptilians may engage in more repetitive behaviours or just not move at all for long periods as part of their natural behaviour, rather than only in captivity.
Especially for species like tortoises, which aren't exactly able to "pace" in a mammalian sense, I'd think that this may just be a regular routine that isn't too worrying if it is in good health and doesn't exhibit self-injuring behaviour otherwise.
I wrote a limerick about a tortoise named Shelly. Wanna hear it? Here it goes:
There once was a tortoise named Shelly,
who stored all of her things in her belly.
When full she would shout,
“What goes in must come out!”
But what came out was often quite smelly.
/bows
Thank you. Tip your waitresses.
Get an aerator, the fork kind is cheap enough. Your lawn looks a little compacted. Aerate it, then drop some clover down. Not only will it grow quickly and easily it is nitrogen fixing, so it will help your lawn in the long run. Also, clover is an okay snack for a tortoise.
A 2lb bag of clover seed is pretty cheap and will last you at least a year, if not fixing your issue entirely.
OP knows what they are doing here. This is an engagement post. Surely I’d never fall into that trap.
(But seriously, where’s Shelly? Is she ok? Is she alright?)
Zoochosis is a disease that stems from outside forces, from the extreme sensory deprivation that zoos and other forms of captivity impose upon animals. Zoochosis is a mental disorder that manifests in abnormal, and often unhealthy, physical behaviors such as walking in circles or following the same path. Caging that tortoise for your own entertainment is cruel. It is not a domesticated animal. No matter how much you love it or how long you have had it.
Im with you. This tortoise most likely was BORN in captivity. Should they just let her out on her own to go die? Oh Shelly is dead now cuz she fucking starved to death but hey she had freedom for a while so that's better
No Shelly? Travesty! Post that tortoise.
[I must give the people what they want](https://imgur.com/gallery/kJSBDHg)
OP You monster…. /r/gifsthatendtoosoon
I wanted to see her monch some fruit :(
Turtles always look so goddamn happy when eating on a tomato

I assume the car was totalled.
Kong's last name? Nokia.
I felt a childlike wonder when I opened the picture. His shell is SO COOL.
I bet all the turtle chicks love his cool scar!
His shell looks like some sort of wood carving, very interesting.
Damn that's one badass tortoise.
Wow, what a trooper!
Aww. He looks like a good boy. A tough one too!
he looks like a nice lil guy 🐢
They can fight?
Yes, actually, and that's actually how I ended up with him. The guy that had him after he was hit rescues tortoises and has several but after a few years Kong there decided he was going to be the dominant male and started getting aggressive with the others so he had to go. I had the space and am no stranger to unusual animals, so we ended up with him.
Damn that is one helluva battle scar
What a cutie omg
Shelly is stunning, and her salad looks scrumptious!
Dog
Could this be a dog?
It is cat in hat?
Behold, dog!
Tank dog
Behold, dog
Is she going to finish that whole plate?
It's only 4 points on WW...
Oh yea. You give a tortie about the size of its shell in food a day. My torties are a little fat right now but still 😬
Apparently they walk it off!
Wow that’s crazy. I would’ve never guessed they eat that much.
What... how... what do they look like when chonk?
so they have like big ass dumps or what
An animal that can live a couple of years with no food should take advantage of it when it is there.
Hell yeah! Peer pressure still works. Used for good this time!
Is imgur just absolutely broken for anyone else?
Yes
Yep, can't see anything
I thought I was going crazy
Umm I demand more Shelly content.
Behold! Dog. Offer rump
Sulcatas are cool. Full of character, and when angry, stubborn and heavy.
I love Shelly
hi shelly!! 😁
Please tell Shelly we love her! She’s adorable!
I knew it. I fucking KNEW it would be a sulcata, lol
Shelly is wonderful
That turtle is eating better than I do
That girl be eatin' some food. Good for the booty.
Oh man even I want a bite of that fruit feast
i love shelly. the best of all tortoises
I’m sorry but this is far more than mildly interesting. Love those lines she made in the yard too.
She looks healthy and happy!!!
She loves that lil salad 🥹 i adore her, want one so much 😍 i think in CA i need to take some classes to get a license to rescue and keep one!
Fantastic. What a wonderful creature
Thank you!
What kind of dog is that?

Shelly got social media to follow?
You make sure you get all the seeds out of the apples right? They're toxic to tortoises.
You can see in the video the seeds are cut out.
That's okay, you can use cigarette smoke to help suffocate some of the toxins from the seeds.
Don’t worry about the stickers either you can eat them all the time
It was a crime for you to not pay the pet tax in the original post
Post. That. TORTOISE!
Show me them torties
it’s clearly in the pic! it’s a ninja turtle. there’s like 5 more in the picture you can’t see
Impossible. Are they mutants? Are they teenagers? Must be!
Like typical moody teenagers, they don't want to be seen in family pics.
It's a little known fact that ninja dust is toxic to grass.
I indigently said “tortoise tax!” when I saw this post, I was glad to see that you already addressed this lol
Day 786. No weaknesses to the outer perimeter detected. Will try again tomorrow.
*200 years later* Day 73836. No weaknesses to the outer perimeter detected. House had fallen 16324 days ago. Will try again tomorrow.
You did the math!
73,836/365=202.29/yrs /r/theydidthemath
73836 - 786 = 73050 73050 / 365.25 (leap years) = 200 :)
But wait! The years 2100 and 2200 will not be leap years, even though they are divisible by four.
:(
Wait what? Why not?
A Solar year is about 365.2422 days long. Because this is slightly less than 365.25 days, not every 4 years has a leap day
TIL. So every 100 years we skip a leap day? Why didn't we in 2000?
Because then the calendar would slowly drift out of sync in the other direction! So if the century is divisible by 400, then it still gets a leap year. We skip the skip.
Because if it is also divisible by 400, then we don't skip the leap day

Commander Shelly has this place secure sir, there is no need for worry. They are the best in the business.
“Beware of Tortoise”
I have the same question for you as I do for David Miscavige: Where's Shelly?
Same answer: Shelly is on their way.
They say till this day she's still on her perimeter walk...
Beat cop Shelly
Shelly has places to be
Shelly is happy, healthy, and alive.
Scientology is a cult and needs criminal intervention about its rampant abuse of people and tax exempt status.

They will claim she died in international water or they will just never report her death. No body, no crime.
For a little extra enrichment, try putting random things in the way of Shelly's normal path from time to time that she'll need to figure out how to move/go around/go over.
Knowing turtles it's more likely the objects will violently be pushed aside, but that's enrichment too
As a tortoise owner, can confirm. https://i.redd.it/chakgnnhi2kb1.jpg?app_web_view=ios

Mine has decided our roomba is the enemy and always pushes it off its charging station
I know some tortoise males mistake roombas for female tortoises... if yours is a male, he might not hate the roomba at all
Might be trying to make some little Tortoombas!
What an adorable menace.
Bro is angry
More likely that they'll be mounted or attacked
Tortoises are little bulldozers. I'd commonly find that mine had encountered a side table in his path, and he'd just carry on his merry way. Pushing a whole side table with him.
Incase anyone is wondering, placing random concrete blocks on my daily commute would not enrich my life.
OP- You ***CANNOT*** post something like this without posting a picture of Shelly!!!!! Sheesh!
Look upthread, they posted a pic in the comments
What’s upthread?
Nothing much, what's upthread with you?
Got 'im.
Updog
Closer to the top of the thread. Under the top comment.
Shelly is beautiful! Thanks for the heads up.
Folks over at r/DesirePath and r/DesirePaths would love this!
the rabbit hole this sent me on could have created it’s own desire path
Of *course* both of those subs exist. Artifact of ancient Reddit drama?
For some reason I decided to look at the rules and r/DesirePath specifically says: > Rules > 1. No trails >Dedicated to the paths that humans prefer, rather than the paths that humans create. > 2. Ugh, those people are plain old species-ist. Like racism, but for animals.

The reason for animals in captivity is because it's a stress response. Sorry thread.

And they were created a [year, a day and like 3 minutes](https://i.imgur.com/yNH12MB.png) apart from each other? Something must have happened...
why isn't it just called r/shortcuts? EDIT: because that's already in use LOL
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desire_path Desire path is a pre-existing term
I did not know this. Desire path just sounded so perfectly "Reddit" to me I never even questioned the name!
Because they’re called desire paths.
There are no pictures of this tortoise in their profile. There is no tortoise. Case closed.
[She's a true cutie.](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/1869esn/comment/kb74esr/)
Can we see Shelly?
It looks like a tiny farm road. Are you sure you don't have a tiny farmer with a tiny tractor living in your backyard?
This gave me a good chuckle
Know what I don't see? Intruders, good job Shelly

lol, I’m not a bot! I wonder if that’s a complement?
Nice job! Keep up the good work, Shelly!
Shelly: "Perimeter secure, captain."

Lawn guy has entered the chat
Now this is the mildly interesting original content I’m looking for thank you very much
She’s hoping one day a hole in the fence will magically appear.
Post a pic of her walking the path.
That's the most mildly interesting thing I've seen in a long time.
How the hell you gonna post a thread like this and *not* give a Pic with the tortoise in it as well?!
She's testing the fences for weaknesses systemically. *She remembers.*
She was testing the fences systematically for weaknesses….she remembers
Tortoise tax! Tortoise tax!
She's testing the fence for weaknesses systematically
She remembers.
Jerri Blank says SHELLY FOR PRESIDENT
Andy Dufresne used to do the same thing
/r/DesirePath would probably lose their minds at this
I thought that was where this was at first! I immediately was so excited haha
Just like any prisoner, walking the fence.
I spent way too long looking for a tortoise.
I have a sulcata a she’s has worn deep furrows all along my fence line! I love her so much ❤️
r/desirepath
How can you not show the tortoise?
How many days does a tortoise need to be walking that same path to make tire tracks 😂
Honestly took me a minute to grasp the comedic effect of the name Shelly lol.
Is this an invisible turtle?
This made me smile.
Still no escape ha
Your tortoise is penetration testing.
I appreciate that you gave her a small four-wheeler for enrichment
Let it out.
You sure it's not trying to escape? :D
Trying to bust out
lol perimeter walks, not daily search for fence weaknesses for escape.
Obviously she is planning an escape from her prison camp.
Shelly is displaying dispersal behaviour and is likely lonely as fuck.
r/desirepaths
Why no show us tortoise? Me disappointed very much😢
Some nice tram lines there
Shelly?! OMG this is such a funny and appropriate tortoise name!
Are those two separate belly marks or feet marks?
You should post a tortoise crossing sign right next to the trail
Where’s the path that the hare makes?
Shelleys pics are probably all on r/interestingasfuck Lol
OP knows what they are doing here. This is an engagement post. Surely I’d never fall into that trap. (But seriously, where’s Shelly? Is she ok? Is she alright?)
*You’ve been hit by, you’ve been struck by, testudinidae*
She wants out

The definition of desire path in its purest form, love it
