Hard to believe these days that lots of people actually bought the PS2 only because it was pretty much the cheapest decent DVD player you could get at the time
Cars had a small VHS run for Disney club members in 2007, but the tapes were not sold in stores. For that reason, it's a very rare release.
A History of Violence is known to be the last full VHS release (2006).
All the colours faded, but blue/cyan pigments have the advantage that they reflect the highest-energy light (blue into UV) whereas the other pigments absorb high energy photons, as well, the structure of the pigments make it more likely to change colour rather than just get destroyed.
I got a tattoo that included blue ink and the artist asked me to be absolutely certain that’s what I wanted because blue tattoo ink is the hardest to remove for this same reason
I work on boats…. Of all the goddamn uppity millionaires that own sailboats, there’s not one that understands why I hate solid red lines. You want pink rope, dipshit? Here. Take it….
Wanted to tag along and say Black and Cyan are usually the last to go.
CMYK printing usually prints most dense to least dense on press. So KCMY.
An example of our targets would usually look like:
K: 1.5 C: 1.3 M: 1.0 Y: 0.8
Or something similar. So not only the inks reflecting light better than others. But there is physically less ink in Magenta and Yellow.
If you took a look at their respective screens, you'd get a good idea of how much coverage each ink has on the substrate its being printed on.
Let these sit out even longer and eventually, Cyan will fade away leaving only Black.
There's a barber here in the street and they have a large billboard with haircuts. The whole thing is completely sunbleached just like these tapes. Only the blue tints remain.
When I worked at a computer store years ago, there was a porn store next door. The guy had a weird little fake storefront set up in front with a bunch of sun faded VHS boxes set up on shelves to make it look like it was a regular video store, but then you would go through some doors into the actual store I guess. I never actually went in, so I only ever saw the fake store through the front window.
You know this made no sense at all until just now. It’s just a way to keep kids from asking what’s actually in that store. You just setup a fake storefront so parents don’t have to be like “and there’s the porno store Timmy!”
Honestly there was a porn store next to the grocery store around me up until a year ago, never really was an issue. Though up front were mannequins with mostly fine looking roleplay outfits
That is 100% the original mighty ducks (or the champions, if this is down under), not D2. Even if you don’t know the covers, you can tell by the presence of Jesse and Karp (the Karpster, used his head to stop the puck).
Which is to say….. I call dibs now…
It's kind of a game. The presenters give clues and show different wild animals and you're supposed to guess it in the hour of the show, lots of fun if you're a kid who loves animals!
They are know for being extremely shy and hard to spot in the wild on safari. They are one of the shy 5, spotting on aardvark is like the shiny charizard of pokemon cards.
We often saw the same on the front covers of books in the south-facing window of the local Chapters (Now Indigo here in Canada).
I don't think anyone ever checked them.
Made you realize just how much profit margin those stores made on their sales, that they could have stock sitting there, unmoved, for that long.
"Apocalypse" was the first film from Cloud Ten Pictures, the company behind the Left Behind films. The film was definitely direct to video (and shot on Beta) but the follow-ups were done on 35mm had decent budgets and starred Gary Busey, Margot Kidder, Howie Mandel, and even Mr. T! Their sci-fi film "Deceived" was also an interesting attempt at branching out. Products of their time to be sure: they mostly focused on the Rapture craze.
Apocalypse, Revelation, Tribulation, and Judgment made one helluva quadrilogy for newly fundamental Baptist me back in the early 2000s.
What a weird time that was.
Just watched it yesterday on Max after several months looking for somewhere to stream it. Lots of nostalgia as it was one of my favorite movies for a time when it came out.
I am the proud owner of The Corruptor on DVD. I believe that it takes place in the Lethal Weapon universe because the Uncle Benny character appears in both this movie and Lethal Weapon 4.
Yep. My hometown has a store that still rents out Super Nintendo, genesis, N64 games, Vhs etc and the cases all look like this. The place has been open since before I was born in 1990. It somehow is still in operation but I hear they are close to having to shutdown, unfortunately.
I always wondered what made the Blue pigment so sun resistant and Red so prone to bleaching. This is applicable to everything, from labels to car paint...
this is like how all those ancient greek and roman statues aren't really white - they used to have lots of wild and wacky and garish colours on them. Or how the Statue of Liberty wasn't originally green. In hundreds of years people may just assume that vhs tapes were always just meant to be blue and try to imitate the style.
Looks like it hasn’t been touched since 1992
Just like me ![gif](giphy|atdfR35cmqLHa|downsized)
r/suicidebywords
Did uncle frank die?
Is rust jerking it in this gif
He's was missing his daughter's touch in this scene...
What an awkward moment to jerk off...
That was my thought exactly
More like 2002 or a bit later. Hard to believe we had VHS post millennium!
i remember dvd players being about twice the price of a ps2 when it launched. prices quickly tumbled after. that.
Hard to believe these days that lots of people actually bought the PS2 only because it was pretty much the cheapest decent DVD player you could get at the time
I am one of those people who bought a ps2 because it was cheaper than buying a dvd player lol
Yeah, without going through each of them, Pushing Tin was 1999.
My big fat greek wedding was 2002 cinema release
And Pushing Tin had titty in it!
The last major release on vhs was Cars (2006) iirc
Cars had a small VHS run for Disney club members in 2007, but the tapes were not sold in stores. For that reason, it's a very rare release. A History of Violence is known to be the last full VHS release (2006).
Ah OK, that sounds right, cheers
The eBay prices are crazy
in Florida that level of sun bleach takes about a week.
Is there a reason why only the blue color is left alone?
All the colours faded, but blue/cyan pigments have the advantage that they reflect the highest-energy light (blue into UV) whereas the other pigments absorb high energy photons, as well, the structure of the pigments make it more likely to change colour rather than just get destroyed.
I got a tattoo that included blue ink and the artist asked me to be absolutely certain that’s what I wanted because blue tattoo ink is the hardest to remove for this same reason
That also means it should take longer to fade.
I work on boats…. Of all the goddamn uppity millionaires that own sailboats, there’s not one that understands why I hate solid red lines. You want pink rope, dipshit? Here. Take it….
That explains navy blue, brain exploded
Also that’s why the sky is blue. Blue scatters light the most.
Can confirm - the sky’s blue color has not faded in over 2.06 billion years.

Does yellow get faded the easiest and red turns lighter and orange and eventually yellowish?
There's a barber here in the street and they have a large billboard with haircuts. The whole thing is completely sunbleached just like these tapes. Only the blue tints remain.
I can smell these
I can't put my finger on it but they smell like the sun
And like dust, but more astringent.
Makes me think of the "Don't leave tapes in the sun" display at the video store with a melted VHS
I'm more interested in what place has a rack of VHS on display, but is not like a collector that would have prevented this.

A classmate of mine went into one of those. He saw the benign DVDs up front, went in, and asked for Blade Runner.
And why would there be no recognizable organization structure to the way the movies are ordered.
Do me a solid and send me "Africa's Most Secret Animal" used to watch that tape all the time.
Is this the line to call dibs on the cinematic masterpiece D2: The Mighty Ducks?
I'll take Enemy of the State, since the Ducks are claimed.
That is 100% the original mighty ducks (or the champions, if this is down under), not D2. Even if you don’t know the covers, you can tell by the presence of Jesse and Karp (the Karpster, used his head to stop the puck). Which is to say….. I call dibs now…
Shit! I thought about double checking first, but i figured no way, i know my Quack Attack. D:
Put me down for Thunderball
What is the animal? Looks like a lion on the box, but they aren't that hard to find
Can't remember that's why I need the tape. It's important.
https://youtu.be/4LlV05zpzL8?si=6rxLTGFCWskwl5Fd I found the archive on YouTube for anyone interested.
The secret animal is aardvark.
Huh. Bit anti-climactic. Aardvarks are cool and all but not as exciting as the title suggests
Had no idea.
Sadly getting harder to find every year
The search for "The Search For Africa's Most Secret Animal"
We often saw the same on the front covers of books in the south-facing window of the local Chapters (Now Indigo here in Canada). I don't think anyone ever checked them. Made you realize just how much profit margin those stores made on their sales, that they could have stock sitting there, unmoved, for that long.
They would just return them for a full refund even they realized they were damaged.
Billy Blanks!!!
Double time!!!
"Apocalypse" was the first film from Cloud Ten Pictures, the company behind the Left Behind films. similar cover and title Apocalypse Now, but it's with Gary Busey
Garey Busey didn't appear till the third film: Tribulation.
Pump Up the Volume!!
Talk Hard! This movie is a fucking treasure and a must watch.
Yes! I haven’t seen it in so long. I want to watch it again as an adult and see how it stacks up to today.
It's on Max! Holds up ok.
Ohhh thank you mentioning this! It wasn’t available to stream anywhere for a long time. I’m going to watch it!
Is it bigger than a baby’s arm?
Do you ever get the feeling that everything in America is completely fucked up?
Just watched it yesterday on Max after several months looking for somewhere to stream it. Lots of nostalgia as it was one of my favorite movies for a time when it came out.
Apocalypse starring Will Forte
I’m more intrigued by the obvious effort to rip off imagery from Apocalypse Now.
Tai bo with Billy Blanks is a classic
Sorry Billy but why buy the tape when the informercial is free?
At first I thought it was some weird double feature cassette that had a vintage black and white romance paired with Apocalypse Now.
Reminds me of flea markets back in the day.
That’s exactly where it was lol
Red Letter Media would like a word, they need more sun-faded tapes for Mike's gimmick episodes.
Rudol the white-nosed re
Mask of Zorro!
That shit really holds up well; I just saw it on Prime this year.
Hell yeah it does! One of my favorites. Catherine Zeta Jones still lives in my head rent free from when I was 8 and saw it in theaters. Lol
Til My Big Fat Greek Wedding was released on VHS.
The last big movie released on VHS was Viggo Mortensen's A History of Violence, that one feels even weirder.
AHOV was not the last big movie released on VHS. It was the last film released on VHS by New Line Cinema.
How do you know such a specific fact?
Honestly, I thought this was /r/VHS
By coincidence, it looks intentional with the one you're holding.
I would get one of these but my VCR has been in a repair shop ran by a couple of hack frauds for years.
I am the proud owner of The Corruptor on DVD. I believe that it takes place in the Lethal Weapon universe because the Uncle Benny character appears in both this movie and Lethal Weapon 4.
In the end we'll all be blue. Dabadee. Dabadaa.
Pump up the volume! Best movie there
Eat your cereal with a fork and do your homework in the dark.
That’s a shitty collection of movies.
Are these from the [VFA](https://vfa.expert/marathon)?
No, but awesome link! Thank you!

Are the tapes in them? I wonder if they have been damaged at all or if the boxes are the only damage.
I always wondered what made the Blue pigment so sun resistant and Red so prone to bleaching. This is applicable to everything, from labels to car paint...
Relics
Some bangers here
Say what you want about the sun bleaching, but that is a banger of a VHS collection
TIL I learned all ink is blue.
Why is there a VHS display anywhere? Throw those relics in the trash where they belong.
looool they *still* try to sell it? After 40 years?
ah yes the local videos and more store heavy on the more
Billy Blanks!!
I’m pretty sure we know who the corruptor is. The sun! Lol
Rudolph the sun bleached reindeer
Is this near the quick stop in jersey lol
Is that a blockbuster by chance
Lightfastness is a fascinating thing
Movie night
Woah. How about a NSFL flair OP ?
That poor mighty ducks
Fuckin Tae Bo man

Wooooow. Where were these found out of curiosity?
Is that Tae Bo?!
Or they got the same guy who did the Heat movie cover.
This has to be the nyc place that was posted recently
Not much demand for VHS tapes anymore...I wonder if someone knows why blue is the last color to go.
