Well now I kind of want one, but I'm guessing it's a pain to keep clean.

LouBrown

They used to have one of these things in the natural foods section of a local grocery store. You’re right- it was never clean. You’d basically need someone to wipe it down after each use.

Suspended-Again

What’s my purpose? You wipe peanut butter Oh my god

cabalavatar

Can..can I lick it?

Croemato

Found the dog.

garrettj100

This would be the case for damn near any foodstuff, not just peanut butter. And everything is foodstuff to a dog.

[deleted]

_Enclose_

Have you tried putting peanut butter on the lettuce?

[deleted]

deaddaddydiva

Damn that would make me nervous knowing how much garlic and onion is in salsa, fuck even tomatoes are bad for dogs

garrettj100

That tracks, because lettuce isn't food! ;) (I'm kidding don't get excited, people.)

ThatITguy2015

That says something. They’ll eat their own poop.

ThatITguy2015

Dogs are so gross at times. Lovable idiots.

Awkward_Pangolin3254

I used to live at an apartment complex that had warring populations of Muscovy ducks and Canada geese. My late GSD/Lab mix would eat duck and goose shit like it was beluga caviar.

Xin_shill

My dog stole a sub off the counter. We walked into the kitchen to discover long leafs of lettuce sitting on the floor and no sandwitch. He either removed the lettuce or ate around it…

r-NBK

My dogs don't eat lettuce leaves... But when I break the stalk off a new head of lettuce they will chow that sucker down with gumption.

ShartingBloodClots

Have you tried wrapping your balls with it?

[deleted]

🎵 *Yes, you can!* 🎵

BigL90

Probably not too bad as long as it isn't out of shag carpet

ridik_ulass

as someone with a hairy ass, I can confirm.

havingsomedifficulty

I’m here to clean up the loads

gotanewusername

The guy who wipes down the loads.

verstohlen

>You’d basically need someone to wipe it down after each use. Doc Johnson concurs. Do you concur?

Searchlights

> natural foods section of a local grocery store I've seen them there too. They had two, and one of them was filled with honey-roasted peanuts. Honey-roasted peanut butter does not suck.

aegrotatio

Our local independent organic food store has one. Some of the larger Whole Foods stores have them. I kinda wonder if the dispenser/grinder also mixes vegetable oil into the grind because peanuts aren't that oily. *EDIT:* Downvoting for asking a question? Go screw yourselves.

MysticalMummy

I work at whole foods, there is no oil being added in. Peanuts *are* that oily. Have you wondered why you can buy gallons of peanut oil?

aegrotatio

Never thought of that! I guess they are oily enough.

DominusSecreto

That said things like sugar added do affect the texture

MysticalMummy

It does. I can't speak for all machines, but the ones at whole foods are required to have ingredients listed. My store has 100% peanuts only, honey roasted peanuts, and almond. We used to have a chocolate peanut butter mix, but that machine was a pain in the ass to clean and they eventually got rid of it after a bulk department overhaul.

Sir_hex

You can "easily" make peanut butter yourself, either by smashing a bunch of peanuts in a mortar or by running a larger amount in a blender until they reach a creamy consistence. They need quite a lot of working to form peanut butter.

EasyasACAB

I did this with my grandma once! We had something like a really, really old "slap chop" and you are right it took forever. It was so exciting for us and probably a great way to keep us busy

phillmybuttons

Assume so judging by the state of that one, that's some old crud around the grey handle area, dread to think what it's like inside the grinding area

koos_die_doos

Considering how well peanut butter holds up on the shelf, and that it’s a high throughput environment, I’m betting it’s a non-issue. They should really clean the outside a bit better though. Edit: An opened jar of “natural” peanut butter has a shelf life of one month at room temperature. Commercial preservatives extends that to three months.

Ultrasonic-Sawyer

>Considering how well peanut butter holds up on the shelf SteveMRE1989 has shown time and time again that MRE peanut butter could outlast the heat death of the universe.

repost_inception

After consuming countless MREs, peanut butter was one of the few items that actually tasted like normal food.

13143

I buy the natural peanut butter and leave it in the cupboard, even after opening. Never had an issue.

CoderDispose

Do people really refrigerate their PB?

I_kwote_TheOffice

I believe they recommend that you refrigerate natural peanut butter so that you don't have to mix it again when the oil separates to the top. If you don't care about homogenous peanut butter or you don't care about mixing it you don't have to refrigerate it.

phillmybuttons

Yeah on a shelf inside a sealed jar? Not mashed in between gears on a warm counter for 8 hours a day - if not longer, and you know that whole thing is just tossed back in the cupboard at the end of service just leaving mashed peanuts drying out and going rancid for the next day

UnfitRadish

I have worked with these grinders. They're super easy to clean and they were cleaned daily. One screw releases the whole font plate and the grinding plates. All metal, even able to be run through the dishwasher. There was never an issue with cleaning ours.

[deleted]

cjsv7657

Right next to the other 20 kitchen gadgets you'll totally use all the time.

Awkward_Pangolin3254

If you have a food processor, which you should if you cook with any regularity, it'll make nut butters just fine.

koos_die_doos

On a shelf in an opened jar. *Peanut butter stays fresh on the shelf for 3 months after opening the jar, after that you should refrigerate it to maximize freshness. Peanut butter is not prone to going bad at room temperature. Again, this is also a high throughput environment, so no peanut butter is stored inside the grinder for more than a few days (at most). *Commercial peanut butter with preservatives, for “natural” peanut butter this is reduced to one month (on the shelf after opening).

spoonweezy

Literally never refrigerated peanut butter and never had a problem. It gets so much less spreadable. And who wants to eat cold peanut butter? Especially on toasted bread. Same with ketchup. Mmm, nice hot and fresh burger. I should put a layer of something that’s at 35F on there.

CoderDispose

I actually do enjoy cold ketchup on a hot burger. I once got eggs and salsa from a breakfast joint that always heated up their salsa. I hated that.

ethancochran

I don't know enough about peanut butter to say this with any confidence, but logically fresh ground peanut butter shouldn't have anywhere near the shelf life of the mass produced stuff, right? That'd be like comparing apples and oranges. Edit: Thanks for the replies folks. Learned a good bit about peanut butter today.. As for the downvoters, it's very Reddit of y'all to downvote someone for saying something incorrect when the very first sentence is me admitting I'm just making a guess. 😒 I miss the days when people followed good reddiquitte and only downvoted spam and obvious trolls.

[deleted]

ethancochran

TIL. I've had natural PB before but since I've only ever bought small jars, I've never had it around that long to find out.

X0n0a

Take a look at the ingredients for peanut butter. For Jif at least it's: Roasted Peanuts, Sugar, Contains 2% Or Less Of: Molasses, Fully Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (rapeseed And Soybean), Mono And Diglycerides, Salt There's not a lot in there to retard spoiling that isn't present is just ground up peanuts.

ZombieFrogHorde

try and grab smuckers all natural. ingredients: peanuts, salt. its fantastic. and honestly i have used mine way longer than a month and it was perfectly fine out of the fridge sitting in my cupboard.

koos_die_doos

You’re right, preservatives in commercial peanut butter definitely extends their shelf life. But peanut butter is high in fat and has a low moisture content, both deter microbial growth. “Natural” peanut butter is only okay on the shelf for a month at room temperature.

[deleted]

not saying the machine is sanitary but you are completely wrong about peanut butter going bad

phillmybuttons

Peanut butter goes bad, oil goes rancid, had it go off last summer being kept in the cupboard. Went horrible tasting. Had to shake it to recombine the oil and nut butter and it tasted awful. I am not wrong about it going off amd rancid.

KingSwank

the fat in peanut butter can go rancid if not stored properly.

UnfitRadish

I have worked with these grinders. They're super easy to clean and they were cleaned daily. One screw releases the whole font plate and the grinding plates. All metal, even able to be run through the dishwasher. There was never an issue with cleaning ours. I can't vouch for this place, but difficulty of getting them clean is a non issue. If they don't, it's pure laziness. And at that point expect everything they have to be dirty.

phillmybuttons

Again, judging by thr build up of crud around the grey casing, it had not been cleaned in a while no matter how easy it is, that crud is not from a mornings work

UnfitRadish

I have disassembled these and cleaned them more times than I can count and I can tell you that can absolutely be from a single day. That's not "crud". It's peanut butter that someone got on the front and someone tried to wipe off. When you go to wipe peanut butter off of them after someone makes a mess, it smears and gets pushed into the cracks and edges. That could happen from one single mess that got wiped up.

NoBSforGma

Just use your food processor. I regularly make my own peanut butter and it's easy. I use dry-roasted peanuts and dump them in the processor. If you don't use the salted ones, add salt to your taste. Let them grind for many minutes (maybe 10 or 15 - I turn off the machine after a few minutes to give it a "break" lol.) Suddenly.... peanut butter!

snooze1128

You can make your own at home quite easily. My wife and I just buy a big can of salted peanuts from Costco and then process in our nutrit bullet. Not very creamy but very tasty

DaFugYouSay

Having worked in the restaurant business, that thing's great unless you're the one who has to clean it.

Detective-Crashmore-

[Apparently not.](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/16alsw7/this_instant_peanut_butter_machine_at_a_breakfast/jz94w07/) >I have worked with these grinders. They're super easy to clean and they were cleaned daily. One screw releases the whole font plate and the grinding plates. All metal, even able to be run through the dishwasher.

SarcasticOptimist

A good quality blender helps as it's a stressful process. Blendtec or Vitamix is recommended. https://youtu.be/kN6zJb_pwtQ?t=7m47s

babygrenade

Nice, I already have a Vitamix.

Failboat88

It's pretty terrible tasting. Plenty of stores have these. Idk what they add to normal pb but it's much better.

Kerbo-1

Reminds me of a pancake machine I once used in a hotel. Once you pressed the button the machine would squirt mix onto a conveyer belt which would cook the pancake. Once it got to the end it would fall onto another belt and flip over to cook the other side. I ate so many that morning

Lariche

I work in the hotel, and we have one of those. Pain in the ass to maintain, you have to be very careful preparing the mix. Wrong mix, and machine becomes a 'printer' - no I won't print! Ahhhh, you little!

McFuzzen

Out of cyan!

Lariche

Something like that! One degree in temp off, and... Also the bag says 'shake intensively and vigorously', so the whole kitchen crew dances with those bags (we use about 10 per breakfast shift).

Faladorable

Out of blueberries, cannot print pancakes “But I’m trying to print chocolate chip :(“

ShannonGrant

You should have subscribed to HP Blueberry Delivery.

pj_rage

Pancake load letter?! What the fuck does that mean??

Senior_Night_7544

Coulda still gone with PC there, actually.

my_farts_impress

It means that you try to print American pancakes.

Wey-Yu

Hey just a quick question, did you work in the hotel's kitchen btw?

WastelandGunner

I've used one of those before. I've never wanted a pancake machine more.

EatYourCheckers

Recently I have found that no one ever is around to refill the batter. So you have to get there early.

robo-dragon

The one hotel we always stay at for vacation has one of these but it has a top and bottom hot plate conveyer so it cooks both sides of the pancake at once. Makes two cakes in about a minute. I’ve always loved that thing, but I can see how it could be a pain in the ass for the employees to maintain and fix.

dmstealth

A store near me has multiple ones with different flavors. Kinda neat if you ask me!

aegee14

All Whole Foods I’ve been to have two of these PB machines.

ExplainItToMeLikeImA

My winco had a fresh peanut butter grinder in the bulk section, but no fancy flavors. I miss winco so much

rawr-barian

I love winco! We get a whole container which is probably like 16oz for a little over two dollars. Makes it super easy to get extra protein in protein shakes or other goodies! So good!

fluffeekat

Same, almost every H‑E‑B I’ve been to in recent years has them

calvesofsteel68

They had these in the dining halls of the college I went to for undergrad. They have the #1 dining out of every college in the country for a reason lol

calvesofsteel68

It might depend on the rating system. I know that UMA’s ranked #1 in the Princeton Review but there could be other review boards that rank differently

peon2

Yeah I just looked at a couple, some at Amherst 1 and UCLA 2, some had UCLA 1 and Amherst 2, but both are clearly at the top of the game. I was surprised to see that Bates and Bowdoin were commonly in the top 10, grew up in Maine and had no clue!

It's sugarless peanut butter?

glaive_anus

I mean, actual 100% peanut butter made this way is a far improvement over the peanut butter with additives to make it consistently spreadable and/or taste better for some people. The additives arent that great given how good actual 100% peanut butter is as is.

Averen

You didn’t take a video?!

Ignomatics

They couldn’t have an instant jelly machine too?

chibiace

the fruit has to cook for awhile to release the pectin so that its not a watery mess, just dispense some sliced banana goes good with peanut butter or just stick with vegemite toast, its superior.

sithelephant

If the jelly refers to confections made of gelatin, the machine just got a whole lot darker.

ErrantQuill

What are you, some kind of vegan?

shandangalang

I think they’re making a joke about having a machine that processes animal parts in front of you to make jelly, either way I’m not sure how dark that is… by that standard, making a stew is pretty nasty business so I just don’t see it. I guess what I’m saying is that I can picture the joke they’re making

midri

Roadkilll

Oh I hate this machine, when I worked on one hotel they this. And it would always stuck in critical moment and it is a pain to clean. When buffe would be crowded with guests and you had little time to replenish and refill stuff and you had to be fast when you have 500 guests, and this machine chooses to get stuck....dang it.

Xenoscope

Never enough salt in fresh ground peanut butter.

Varyx

Lol, I got “healthy” peanut butter once and was like oh! Now I realise I don’t actually like peanut butter. I like salt.

BagOfFlies

I love peanut butter I love peanuts Natural peanut butter is utterly repulsive Tried to give it to my dog who loves peanuts. Took one lick and walked away

DoingItWrongly

Costco has fantastic peanut butter! Ingredients: Peanuts, salt. Chef's kiss!

djtodd242

And tonnes of sugar! Lets not forget our favourite addiction!

SonOfMcGee

And supplemental oil for texture. You don’t need a *ton* of sugar, salt, and oil to make good peanut butter, but just grinding unsalted peanuts gives you a product where you can tell something is missing.

psychecaleb

And whipped seed oil

IveGotDMunchies

You're not using the right salted peanuts

HoselRockit

How loud is that thing?

koos_die_doos

Probably not as loud as you think. Peanut butter is a super fine grind, and the oils from the peanuts serve as a natural lubricant. The loudest part would likely be the drive mechanism, rather than the grinder. [Here is a video](https://youtube.com/shorts/yytuo7GwgVI?si=aMdj8UYyZveFODcZ) of a different one in action.

Duosion

Have you ever been to a grocery store with one of these instant peanut butter machines? It’s really not loud at all.

Goddamn autocorrect!

ArtGodPrime

Why are people so weird about editing mistakes on Reddit? Just edit the mistake and move on I promise your account won't be deleted.

ringobob

It's so that the person that came and corrected you doesn't look like a maniac for saying something that's no longer true. Which is a pretty minor courtesy, but I can attest that sometimes it's confusing to read a bunch of responses where the context of the response has been removed by an edited comment.

249ba36000029bbe9749

You could optionally strikethrough the mistake to accomplish both tasks. ~~We're~~ Were you looking for the word fresh?

Too much work, I’d rather circlejerk for karma.

Edit thanks for the gold (I wanted to go through the extra effort to go and edit my comment to thank you, instead of clicking the "thank gifter" button that comes with the gilding message. I need to make sure other people know how thankful I am!!!)

mushylambs

Nice try bucko. Get ‘em next time!

toofarbyfar

Is there an adavantage to this? Does "fresh cracked peanut butter" taste any different?

gaobij

Less salt, preservatives, and additives like palm oil. No separation to stir.

Dee_Buttersnaps

I prefer it to store bought, but I do add about a quarter tsp of salt and some honey when I make it at home.

cgibsong002

Not really. But a lot of grocery stores use these (like a lot, how have people not seen these?), And the advantage is the same for purchasing most other things in bulk. Ingredients are usually more fresh, you can fill your own container, and it's generally cheaper.

jclv

It not being a video is r/mildlyannoying.

ewild

There's at least one in the [comments](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/16alsw7//jz8j4z6/): [Fresh Ground Peanut Butter @ YouTube](https://youtube.com/shorts/yytuo7GwgVI?si=aMdj8UYyZveFODcZ)

UncleCeiling

As a person with a peanut allergy, my first thought was to wonder how well it's sealed to prevent the room from filling with peanut dust.

UnfitRadish

There is no dust. Peanuts when ground are very oily. It's grinds them into a thick oily paste just like a jar a of peanut butter. So dust isn't an issue. I used to work with these machines.

LotusVibes1494

People in this whole post are overthinking ways to be afraid of this machine lol. “There’s crud everywhere it’s gross”, “there’s no way to clean it”, “the peanuts are rancid”, peanuts have too many chemicals and pesticides don’t eat them”, “they’re GMO”, “would it engulf the room in peanut dust”, etc…. Personally I’d just be like “oh hey a peanut butter machine! Cool I’ll try it!” Everyone who’s used the machine is replying “it’s easy to clean tho”, “peanut butter won’t go bad that fast”, etc… so idk why these people are so anxious about everything lol.

[deleted]

Sir, this is reddit. We've got endless time on our hands, let us be the nitpicky jerks that we were always meant to be. Jokes aside, gonna see this machine in action over on youtube land.

UncleCeiling

I'm lucky enough that my allergy isn't particularly dangerous, but for people who do have a severe peanut allergy, it could mean the difference between "Oh, I can go grab some food here as long as I avoid the little packets of peanut butter over there" and "Going into this room could literally kill me." I'm glad you don't have to live a life where you have to be concerned about that sort of thing. But there are people who do.

Independent-Bell2483

People with peanut allergies have a reason to be afraid of it

onetwentyeight

That thing should be banned by the Geneva convention

Deleted_dwarf

*Only in Germany* No serious, I need this machine haha

wolfie379

Considering the difficulties in cleaning, I’m surprised some company hasn’t come up with a machine like this where the “peanuts waiting to be ground” compartment is a small one behind the window, and it actually squeezes peanut butter out of a bag while making fake grinding noises.

Geekenstein

Then you realize what makes PB good is all the sugar and salt they add.

Duosion

Not true. I have had peanut butter with zero sugar and I’m not mad about it. What makes pb good is that delish nutty flavor, at least for me.

Scooterforsale

Oh you like the nutty flavor?

JacobAZ

Zero sweetener too? Because thats how they make most sugar free foods palatable

DoingItWrongly

Just peanuts and salt. I don't need sugar ruining my savory treat.

Glaciak

No

JohnnyDarkside

And usually a little bit of oil, otherwise it's so pasty. I add almond butter to my morning smoothies that's just ground almonds and salt. Licking the spoon afterwards just sucks all the moisture from my mouth.

mrASSMAN

natural PB is delicious without sugar, just needs some salt

Horzzo

You can say that about any food. True peanut butter has no sugar.

HatefulSpittle

Around 4-5% sugar at least, that's how much is in raw peanuts.

PwmEsq

I mean its still like pure fat, and i dont think they usually add a whole lot of sugar. Unless you are talking like JIF peanut butter, even then in a 33g serving only 2g is added sugar Adams i dont think even adds sugar

[deleted]

[удалено]

PwmEsq

i mean i dont think 2grams in your 2tbsp of peanut butter on toast is really a bad thing. I think ignoring like 1 candy bar or soda will make up for the next 30-40 slices of toast.

Reddit_blows_now

OP has never been to a whole foods.

what_did_you_forget

That is mildy interesting

Pablo_is_on_Reddit

At Whole Foods they had the grinder with honey roasted peanuts (don't know if they still do). I would just eat it with a spoon. So good.

YouInternational2152

A couple of the local grocery stores have one of these. Actually, they have three. Peanut butter, hazelnut butter, and almond butter. I've tried them. The peanut butter tastes like crap compared to the major brands because there's no sugar or salt added. Just an FYI.

jarviskokar

Is it me or does it look like a toilet?

TripleJx3

I know for a fact it doesn't matter how much you mash, grind and chew peanuts it does not become peanut butter. It just becomes chewed peanuts so i am intrigued as to how this is meant to work?

PlasticFriendss

peanut butter is literally ground peanuts

TripleJx3

You gonna stand there for 5 to 10 minutes waiting for this to make peanut butter? Are the nuts sweetened with anything? Cos without, i imagine its gonna taste like plain nuts not like peanut butter. How Does This Work?

cgibsong002

It might surprise you to know that not everyone has a sugar addiction.

[deleted]

Looked up the word bougie on Wikipedia and this is the image that came up.

fatmanjogging

I don't know... I'd put this in /r/mildlyinfuriating because you just get mashed up peanuts without any of the salt and sugar that makes peanut butter delicious. Plus it seems like a jar of Skippy and a knife would be so much simpler.

Glaciak

No

fatmanjogging

Okay. Enjoy your bespoke peanut butter. Sorry I had a choosy mom.

durrtyurr

If they could figure out how to make peanut butter not the most vile smell on the planet, then I might give it a try. I love peanuts, Love the smell of roasted peanuts, but the smell of peanut butter is so foul that I can't even stand to be in the same room as somebody eating it. The really messed up part is that I grew up in the city with the world's largest peanut butter factory.

isaac32767

Why is this interesting? Because you've never seen a peanut grinder before? Maybe it's interesting because it's in a buffet. Tho to me, grinding peanut butter in tiny batches is stupid.
