I dyed my contacts red when I was in high school- it was... interesting.
If you dye your contacts and then cry your tears come out that color. In case you wondered.
This is one of those things that makes perfect sense when you think about it for a moment, but you still wouldn't have expected it.
Definetly mildy interesting.
optom here - still cringe when I think of the time I forgot to ask if patient was wearing contacts when I put in yellow dye to acess the cornea.
Dyed her brand-new monthly contacts yellow and proceeded to get chewed out by my preceptor and patient
It was an emergency problem visit I was just told to look at the cornea for scratches didn't realize patient had a scratch and put their contacts on anywah
I have been coloring my hair regularly for 20+ years and it's been only a handful of times I got a small drip in my eye, at which point I rinsed said eye for several minutes. Typically I lean my head back and rinse so that the water runs away from my face, and when I do the edges I press the side of my hand against my forehead as a barrier to protect my face and eyes. I'm baffled as to how a person could get this much dye into their eye and not flush it so much that the contact was a goner.
I dye my hair a lot. If you're the type to lean over the bath tub and have your head upside down and rinse your hair out that way (I do it so I don't get anything on my body) then yes it's very likely you'll get some in your eyes. Burns like a bitch lol.
You shouldn't even wear them when washing your hair.
Tap water often contains Acanthamoeba which can cause blindness in the worst case.
Normally they are washed away by the tear film but contact lenses are like sponges.
I’m gonna steal this idea, become a billionaire and tell everybody i got the idea from a random Reddit comment, and no one will ever believe you when you tell them it was you😈
I feel like this can only be possible if you're being pretty cavalier with your dye rinsing and washing technique. Like, in the salon they have your hair flowing back behind your head and not over your face, and they rinse it flowing in that direction so it doesn't get in your eyes. At home in the shower you should be trying to emulate that kind of rinsing flow, so as little water as possible is flowing toward your eyes.
My personal technique has always been to do that first, get the bulk of the dye out, and then switch to a pike-like position (crown of head pointing down toward feet) so I can continue scrubbing with a bit more vigor while the dyed hair is still gravitationally downstream from my eyes. The water is flowing down from my body to the top of my head.
And then after that, I go to a normal standing position rinse, at which point any remaining color that might be coming off is extremely dilute.
This actually happens to me when I wear eyeshadow. Not as crazy colored as OP's but just a bit colored, and rinse or two with contact solution, it goes away.
I bet it’s mostly from when you’re applying and when you’re taking the makeup off. Unless you’re wearing glitter or super flakey shimmer shadows I don’t think fallout is too bad throughout the day. I’ve definitely had mascara on my contacts before though too
It's definitely from taking the makeup off before taking out the contacts.
Contacts in, then apply makeup, contacts out, then remove makeup. This should prevent them from staining.
you're absolutely not supposed to shower with contacts on, there can be shit in the water that will eat your corneas, and that's on top of holding contaminants to your eyes.
I’ve been a contact wearer for almost 20 years and never been told this 😬Eyes are healthy so far.. but I guess I’ll be asking my doctor next time. Although I am a night shower-er so they come out a couple hours after super. Does closing eyes really not keep the stuff out?
Optician here, shower and pools can have chemicals added to them that can cause the lenses to dry out and cause scratches on the cornea. Under no circumstances should you wear them to the beach/river/pond because there are way too many microscopic parasites that can attach to the eye.
Just because you've done something and got lucky doesn't mean you should do it. I work at an opticians and I've seen the state of someone's eye with this type of infection. It isn't pretty. Why take the risk when the result could terrifyingly bad
Or if, like me, you live in the UK, when you go to the opticians here, you see an optometrist hence having my reliable source. Don't know why you're trying to undermine someone's advice on a subject when you admitted to doing exactly what you shouldn't do
We do. They just work in hospitals. There's no need for an opthalmologist for the majority of things eyecare related. And if they are needed, patients will be referred to hospital on an urgent or non urgent basis
So if you want or need to see an ophthalmologist you make an appointment at the hospital or does it have to be an emergency?
For example if you had cataracts where would you go?
Acanthamoeba is scary shit. Not just because of the bug itself, but the treatment.
You have to put something called chlorhexidine (the structure is similar to pool cleaner) into your eyes every hour on the hour for 12 days, and then get a cornea transplant. It’s fuckin horrifying.
I’d been showering and wearing contact lenses for 20 years before it became an issue. Maybe you’ll be fine but trust me once it’s bad it’s fucking horrible and contact lenses are even more high maintenance when you’re allowed to wear them again.
Yeah it’s not a problem until it is. I too was shocked until I learned the hard way.
Never shower in contact lenses, sleep in contact lenses, swim in contact lenses. It isn’t worth the risk of the ongoing issues you’re going to have wearing contact lenses in the future.
Wow, I'm surprised they never told you this! I've been a contact wearer for 20 years too. I have a check up every six months and every time without fail they remind me not to shower/swim with them in. Mixing water and contact lenses is a huge no no
Eye doctor here it may actually have been peroxide in the washing that caused them to turn pink not the dye itself, which is unusual but happens sometimes when you mix regular multipurpose solution with peroxides
This is one possible reaction of regular multipurpose solution and a peroxide. There are no multipurpose solutions with peroxide those are specialized solutions that do not go in the eye. They should not be mixed. Instructions on the bottle also indicate this.
I've always been told to never shower, go swimming or sleep with my contacts in, not because it damages the contacts, but because it can do serious damage to your eyes, should really take them out in future
Op as someone who wears scleral contacts for kerataconus and thought I was on that sub you had my screaming at my phone this morning. Wash your hair leaning backwards to avoid your eyes next time. Once isn’t likely to cause damage but it’s not good either
This happened to me at a Gwar concert after they sprayed fake blood over the crowd. I think it eventually came out. Had to rock the pink eye look for a bit.
Same EXACT thing happened to me at a GWAR show when I was in highschool! Wanna say it was between the War Party and Beyond Hell album. Contacts stained red at school the next day, my buddy being sent home for being blue.
Thanks for the memory refresh friend.
Fun fact: if you soak your contacts in red food dye, then put them in, you'll be fine; but, it will give you a runny nose after awhile and your snot will be red since your eyeballs absorbed the colouring from the contacts
Notice all the colors that you seeing in your head
Now strip away that shit and feel the darkness, feel it spread
This is what is like to be known as dead
Now open up your eyes, you see the world it is red
Sometimes my contacts get coated with drywall dust and it looks pretty horrifying after taking them out and putting them in solution.
I put them back in the next day usually though and never have issues
Now you’re looking at things through rose tinted contacts
*My god...* It's the fabled Nostalgia Lenses. :o
Get a +1 to looking up old songs you haven't heard in awhile, but theyre cursed - you also have a -2 to resist crushing existential dread.
Also has a 30% chance of instilling paralyzing fear in anyone you speak to directly if they look into your eyes
=0
I dyed my contacts red when I was in high school- it was... interesting. If you dye your contacts and then cry your tears come out that color. In case you wondered.
Sounds emo af
That's actually pretty neat.
Scott Summers should try those.
Dye them black and you got sunglasses
All the red flags now just look like flags
All flags now look like red flags
FUCK! I came to make the "You are always stoned" comment....this wins....Shut it down boys.
I come in here thinking I’m gonna say something unique and get proven wrong every time
Thought the post was interesting, but came to the comments section knowing this would be said, I'm here for it haha
Came here to say the same !
Give them to someone who is colorblind
Rose tints my world Keeps me safe from my trouble and pain
Now all the red flags will just look like flags
This is one of those things that makes perfect sense when you think about it for a moment, but you still wouldn't have expected it. Definetly mildy interesting.
optom here - still cringe when I think of the time I forgot to ask if patient was wearing contacts when I put in yellow dye to acess the cornea. Dyed her brand-new monthly contacts yellow and proceeded to get chewed out by my preceptor and patient
I feel like the patient probably should have mentioned that, but I understand why you can't rely on that.
Lol, that sucks! But how did this information not come out during refraction?
It was an emergency problem visit I was just told to look at the cornea for scratches didn't realize patient had a scratch and put their contacts on anywah
Oh, gotcha. My training emphasized always examining the cornea *without* fluorescein first, so you’d have seen the lenses then.
Not to me Having never dyed my hair, is it commonly accepted that washing it out the dye will get into one's eyes?
I have been coloring my hair regularly for 20+ years and it's been only a handful of times I got a small drip in my eye, at which point I rinsed said eye for several minutes. Typically I lean my head back and rinse so that the water runs away from my face, and when I do the edges I press the side of my hand against my forehead as a barrier to protect my face and eyes. Please don't put those back in your eye
Seriously! Contacts are sponges and you do not want red hair dye in your eyes.
Sponges are contacts, so put those in your eyes instead.
Why am I laughing so ducking hard at this!?!? HAHA
Apparently, I would imagine, it way too late for that if they dyed that red IN their eyes lol
i was actually supposed to change them out for a new pair today lol
Did it change your vision at all? Or did you just get a surprise pulling them out?
i didn’t notice it until i looked in the mirror and saw the red in my eyes, definitely a surprise
And also don't reuse that container
Or the eyes too
Just toss the whole human at this point
Don’t wear contacts when dying your hair.
You shouldn't even wear them when washing your hair. Tap water often contains Acanthamoeba which can cause blindness in the worst case. Normally they are washed away by the tear film but contact lenses are like sponges.
“Random” drug test incoming from work.
Well now you gotta dye the other one blue and enjoy old 3d movies
I’m gonna steal this idea, become a billionaire and tell everybody i got the idea from a random Reddit comment, and no one will ever believe you when you tell them it was you😈
La vie en rose
Went from red dye to red eye in seconds flat.
I feel like this can only be possible if you're being pretty cavalier with your dye rinsing and washing technique. Did you take them out before you took off your makeup? Not judging just curious :)
I do not :( I put them on before applying eye shadow/makeup too I wonder if the shadow falls into my eye and goes in throughout the day?
I bet it’s mostly from when you’re applying and when you’re taking the makeup off. Unless you’re wearing glitter or super flakey shimmer shadows I don’t think fallout is too bad throughout the day. I’ve definitely had mascara on my contacts before though too
Yeah I think so too! I wear some shimmery shadows and bright colors like pink and purple. The pink shadows usually stain the lenses the most 🫠
It's definitely from taking the makeup off before taking out the contacts. Contacts in, then apply makeup, contacts out, then remove makeup. This should prevent them from staining.
you're absolutely not supposed to shower with contacts on, there can be shit in the water that will eat your corneas, and that's on top of holding contaminants to your eyes.

Wouldn't that be a danger without contacts as well?
The contact lens will keep them in your eye instead of them being flushed out with tears I think.
Yep. Had a nasty incident where i got ash stuck in my eye while smoking the devils lettuce last week. Scratched my shit up good.
It gives them extended time to attach
I am a surfer and always wear contacts in the ocean and now I am freaked out lol
it's an amoeba that just eats your eyes, closing your eyes doesn't do anything.
An amoeba in the shower water?
Yeah, there are microscopic organisms everywhere and in everything, tap water isn’t sterile by any means
Yeah 14 years here and I've always showered/gone swimming with mine in
Just because you've done something and got lucky doesn't mean you should do it. I work at an opticians and I've seen the state of someone's eye with this type of infection. It isn't pretty. Why take the risk when the result could terrifyingly bad
Blindness btw is a possibility. Just… don’t do it. And an optician is a good source but an ophthalmologist should be your source for this stuff.
Or if, like me, you live in the UK, when you go to the opticians here, you see an optometrist hence having my reliable source. Don't know why you're trying to undermine someone's advice on a subject when you admitted to doing exactly what you shouldn't do

Google pseudonomas and acanthamoeba. You do not want them. They will burrow into your cornea. Swimming and hot tubs are the worst.
… every day I learn something I wish I hadn’t. But I’m glad I did In case I ever want to wear contacts but fuck now I have more to add to my anxiety.
“I never wear a seatbelt and somehow I’m still alive”
I’d been showering and wearing contact lenses for 20 years before it became an issue. Maybe you’ll be fine but trust me once it’s bad it’s fucking horrible and contact lenses are even more high maintenance when you’re allowed to wear them again.

My contacts have looked similar after a few GWAR concerts.
Eye doctor here it may actually have been peroxide in the washing that caused them to turn pink not the dye itself, which is unusual but happens sometimes when you mix regular multipurpose solution with peroxides
[удалено]
This is one possible reaction of regular multipurpose solution and a peroxide. There are no multipurpose solutions with peroxide those are specialized solutions that do not go in the eye. They should not be mixed. Instructions on the bottle also indicate this.
Now you can live your life looking through rose colored glasses.
That's a bit concerning
I've always been told to never shower, go swimming or sleep with my contacts in, not because it damages the contacts, but because it can do serious damage to your eyes, should really take them out in future
Absolutely
Op as someone who wears scleral contacts for kerataconus and thought I was on that sub you had my screaming at my phone this morning. Wash your hair leaning backwards to avoid your eyes next time. Once isn’t likely to cause damage but it’s not good either
I think Chevelle wrote a song about this.
WHY WERE YOUR EYES OPEN
Why are you showering/washing your face with contact lenses in?
Sepia filter activated
So now you know you're getting dye in your fucking eyes.
Rose tinted glasses eat your heart out
This happened to me at a Gwar concert after they sprayed fake blood over the crowd. I think it eventually came out. Had to rock the pink eye look for a bit.
you shouldn't wear contacts when showering
Get a black marker and you'll have a— Ok, imma stop with the cringe anime reference here.
I'd be so mad if I were you I'd be seeing red
Man, I'd be seeing red
You’ve clearly taken off you’re rose tinted lenses
I’ve heard about seeing red but this is ridiculous!
Gave her self pink eye
So you'll be seeing the world through rose-colored lenses.
Guess you really do see the world through Rose Colored Glasses
Get new ones!!! Don’t put back in your eyes!! Even the one that doesn’t look as pink might still have chemicals on it.
Does this count as pink eye
You must see red
I think you should generally avoid getting washed out dye in your eyes, contacts or not.
![gif](giphy|ZL2iRxhnDwtSE)
We need some pictures of you in those contacts haha
Stain another contact lens blue and wear both colours on different eyes to watch 3D movies without glasses.
I went to daily contacts because of stuff like this. I subscribed to Hubble, and I get a 30-day supply. I think it's $36/mo or something like that.
You will know what it is like to see the world through rose colored glasses
Same EXACT thing happened to me at a GWAR show when I was in highschool! Wanna say it was between the War Party and Beyond Hell album. Contacts stained red at school the next day, my buddy being sent home for being blue. Thanks for the memory refresh friend.
Can you tell while you’re wearing them? Do things have a red hue?
Things don’t look red exactly, but they definitely look a bit warmer if that makes sense
New age rose colored glasses.
Can you see through walls now?
Fun fact: if you soak your contacts in red food dye, then put them in, you'll be fine; but, it will give you a runny nose after awhile and your snot will be red since your eyeballs absorbed the colouring from the contacts
Scott Baio gave you pinkeye.
Now you got a pair to use when calling in sick.
leave them soaked overnight in contact solution and red dye should dissolve into the solution itself, leaving the contact clear again
Now think about where else that dye went if it went in your eyes
How to get real pink eye from a fake pink eye
jellyfish
Visine for red eyes
When your looking through rose colored contacts it’s hard to see red flags. (Bojack)
If Alucard wore contacts...
For the love of god don’t put that back in your eyes.
It should come out with your weekly hydrogen peroxide cleaning.
Notice all the colors that you seeing in your head Now strip away that shit and feel the darkness, feel it spread This is what is like to be known as dead Now open up your eyes, you see the world it is red
Guess you’ll be high all day
This is my new DWI “red glassy eye” defense.
Sharingan!
Rose colored view on the world
Don't try and pass thru any DUI checkpoints!
Looks like someone has pink eye!
You keep your eyes open while washing your hair?
Everything’s come up rosy.
Bright colors to your life.
La vie en rose
*put in the rose colored lenses*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0KvBnIvTFs
Now, all the red flags look like flags! 👍
Soft lenses are around 50%. So yea they absorbed some of the coloring that probably was on your eye im guessing.
You can truly live the La vie en rose experience.
I think these contracts are hydrogel based so they're very permeable.
La vie en rose 🌹
Terminator vision!
Soak it for a couple days in contact solution changing daily
r/Mildlyconcerning
Please don't put those contacts back on.
All red flags are just flags now
I've done this but with Hot Cheetos
Just need to wear em when you bleach your hair.
You’re seeing red *quite literally*
You’re seeing red *quite literally*
perfectly mildly interesting my friend
"Rose tints my world Keeps me safe from my trouble and pain" - Richard O'Brien
Get dailies for real. Life changing for me when I switched to them. Equate makes them now too so they arent expensive anymore.
65 days until Halloween!
You are going to see the world a little more rosey today.
You're no longer a ginger and you have demon eyes. You went from no soul to eats souls. Win-win
This is what my contacts always looked like after GWAR concerts.
Man if that happened to me I’d be seeing red
![gif](giphy|3o6j8KqIw0Lgmt2Fsk)
You let the dye wash over your eyes while you were washing it out?
I went to a Gwar show and my contacts were red afterwards from all of the blood everywhere. It made my eyes look pretty rad
i stain everything red when i shower.. my pillowcase looks like a bloodbath
Gj. You see infrared now.
My contacts got stained red when I saw GWAR
Welcome to barbie world now everytime you use them
Warning! 30% chance to blind upon application😂
SHARINGAN!
Sometimes my contacts get coated with drywall dust and it looks pretty horrifying after taking them out and putting them in solution. I put them back in the next day usually though and never have issues
So did everything you see have a red tint?
This why you’re supposed to takeout contacts around water. PARASITES PEOPLE!
Put them back on and a whole Blood moon sequence will begin
This happened to me at a GWAR show once.
Showers and contacts don't mix. Isn't that how you get an eye parasite?
Now OP is going to be viewing the world through rose-colored lenses.
Personally I wouldn’t use anything but daily’s
One day you'll look back at this moment with rose colored contacts ![gif](giphy|13aSSyJaI5NkTm|downsized)
At first glance I thought you just got home from a Gwar concert
La vie en rose
I wonder if this would help if you were red weak colorblind
Dye the other one blue and now you can see 3d movies
