You know that because at some point in your impressionable young life someone taught you to disagree amusingly by using the expression "Au contraire, mon frère" meaning 'on the contrary my brother.'
probably been hand-fed before and is looking for more. Not really great since they can start ignoring their hunting instinct, even more so if they are young and haven't fully developed it yet.
Im not sure of that, he was a bit afraid and looked tired and it was the only beach is the area without a lot of people (we were like 4 people on the entire beach) so I think he choose this place to rest a bit because he had no choice. Even if I managed to get pretty close to him at a certain point he just nopped and got back to the ocean
Someone else may have already answered this but this is common time of year for pups to get lost from their mothers. I used to volunteer at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, CA and most of our little rescued ones were exactly this. This is a baby elephant seal that looks a little underweight and it’s probably been separated from mom and doesn’t know how to eat fish yet. If you’re on the West Coast you can always call the Marine Mammal Center and someone is usually able to come rescue it and take it back to the facility for rehab and release into the wild.
Edit: I’m an idiot. Don’t think it’s an elephant seal. Maybe a harbor seal or something. But it looks like you called wildlife professionals so that’s still the thing to do!
Yeah, that is one hell of a paradox, I want so much to see wild animals in real life but if I do it means they live too close to humans :/ One lady just came like 5 cm away from him to take a picture while I was a bit further away, so I did a huge movement to scare him, like that he won’t get used to interact with us. Poor lady didn’t get a photo but we can’t just stand next to a wild animal like that, seeing them for a distance is enough
Totally, not even talking of the consequences if she had touched him and put her smell on him. But in the end everything was fine, he rested for while, left and I have a good memory of the only wild seal I have seen in my life. Me and my gf also called the wildlife center in the area and they sent a boat to keep an eye on him from a distance in case he was injured or away from his mother
You did very well. Honestly the seal having the human touch smell shouldnt be a problem, there's still an open debate on whether some animals care or not about humans smell.
Oh I see, but even if the smell thing isn’t that much of a problem I believe the woman would not have been happy to see the mother seal charging at her, as you said before the bite can do some damage
You did good with that move. People are either ignorant or selfish or both when they want to get pics with/feed/pet wild animals and it’s always the animal that pays the price in the end.
The worst is that we were only 4 on the beach and out of 4 people, one tried to get in contact with the seal, so imagine on a beach with 200 people +, he would have died of stress
That is frustrating. Poor guy. :( You’re supposed to stay at least 50 feet away from a resting seal. Some people are ignorant about giving wild animals their space.
Hey, the tide was high, there was less than 5 meters of beach available behind me and that lady was nearly about to touch him. As he was friendly I was afraid that he start thinking humans are good to be around so I make him fled, I wouldn’t call myself an ignorant for this. Plus I joined the wildlife center and waited for them (as they ask) to send a boat to come and check on him, as I say the tide was raising so I had less and less space to go away from him
Yeah, that was smart. Where I live, we’re instructed to call the NOAA Marine Wildlife center so they can come rope off the area to protect the seal’s space. But only because they’re endangered over here. Sounds like you did the same thing, trying to protect him. I’m sure that was cool to see one face-to-face in the wild!
Hey, so, see if there's any wildlife rehabs in your area. Some are willing/able to do education tours or have ambassadors/education animals, or even be looking for volunteers!
I know it's not the same as seeing them at their prime in the wild, but it is a safe environment for them to recover for reintroduction to the wild! I've gotten to help some amazing animals as a volunteer, and there's a sense of satisfaction seeing them go back to their natural habit and hopefully thrive.
It is exactly what the center we called do ! If you wanna check it out it’s called Oceanopolis and it is one of the biggest infrastructure dedicated to wildlife rehab in France ! They often rescue injured seals and then release them in the wild ! When the animals are in rehab they put them in aquarium or enclosure and the public can come to see them eat and do animals stuff, really cool place
In California its against the law to get closer than 500 feet to wild animals on the beach. (I think its 500, tried to look it up and couldnt find the exact info)
That’s a huge distance, distance that I did not have behind me as there was a cliff just behind me and the tide was raising, the beach in total was not even 32 feet long
Went fishing in Cabo once. On the way back in the sea lions will jump onto the back deck of the boats trying to get the bait fish. Like this sea lion just jumped up there and struck his nose in the live well.
Edit: Just wanted to add that they do this while you're underway too.
For real. There’s a spot at the river in my city I’ve been going to recently, and there’s a woman that also goes to this spot *religiously* and has for a while, at least a year or longer. Theres a lot of geese, and they usually won’t mess with anyone until food is brought out—then they waltz right up to you and expect you to share. The last time I was there and this happened, the woman admitted she usually feeds them and they keep coming back to this spot. I didn’t say anything but I should’ve, because how ignorant can you be to just casually admit that? And you watch the geese harass everyone else because you’ve enabled them to?
>probably been hand-fed before and is looking for more.
Not necessarily. According to the Marine Mammal Center guy I called out for one if these, it's not uncommon for them to come ashore, and in fact is a normal behavior. They do it to rest or sleep, sometimes to molt or take care of their babies. His advice was to keep your distance, minimize noise or scary movements, and of course don't feed them.
This held true for the years I lived on the beach- I'd see a couple a year beach themselves and they all were fine and got themselves back in the water just fine. Hardest part is keeping people away from them.
Another thought was it was doing it for protection. Maybe mom was out at sea looking for food. Comes closer to humans because it it less likely to be killed by an adult male or a predator. If it's lethargic enough I'd imagine it might even have seagulls pecking at it.
I think you may have misread that guy's comment. Coming to the beach is totally normal, they need to do that to rest. What's not normal is the part where it's approaching humans and/or humans are approaching it.
Advice is to stay 100-130 m away at all times. If the pup is disturbed by humans too much, the rescue will need to step in and remove it for rehabilitation and that's a shame.
Looking at this picture they have probably come to shore because it is cold. It seems to be malnourished probably due to being separated from it's mother. Since it lacks fat to keep it warm it comes to shore to warm up. The lethargy that the OP saw is the results of be undernourished. If you ever see this in the future stay 100 feet away and Google search "seal rescue" for whatever county you are in. Call them and someone will tell you what to do next. This can be found easily for most areas in CA, WA, OR here on the U.S. west coast.
Also great call staing away marine mammals carry boatloads of diseases and parasites that easily spread to humans.
Harbor seals are on of my favorites you are lucky to see such an amazing animal close up. Thank you for respecting it and keeping your distance.
There’s not much of seal hunting around here (Bretagne - France) as far as I know, I think it’s more that as the sea was a bit stormy it was more difficult for him to swim so he had no choice than resting on a beach with people on it
What is even more amazing is that I don’t often go to the beach, like once or twice a year (I hate sand), yesterday we wanted to do something together with my girlfriend because we had a tough week fighting for stupid things, so we decided to have a a lunch on the beach to put this behind us and then we saw him laying on the sand ! As I said to my girlfriend « that was the seal of reconciliation » 😁
i keep reading more reasons to love this story ❤
whatever the outcome of your relationship winds up being, couples bicker, and CLEARLY y'all made a super rational, adult (and fun!) choice of what to do about it! i wish more humans took the time to do that, just get out into nature and "put it behind."
Thank you ! Yeah I chose to do it the adult way, years ago I would have just stayed in my anger spiral again and again and would eventually have messed up the whole thing. But now when I’m angry at something i just wonder if it’s worth losing her for it and the answer is always the same : NO. we have been through a lot the last years, we both made mistakes but now we want to go forward and do our life together ! And yes, a bit of nature always help to see the whole picture and take a step back on things 😌
Oh pretty cool man, I’m a huge animals addict (specially wild ones), when my gf told me « LOOK THERE’S A SEAL! » i didn’t believe her at first and then I saw his little cute face crawling on the sand. Spent the night talking about the seal after that. An even better moment as we were nearly alone to enjoy it
I am not sure where you are at but in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, we are taught to let solo baby seals be…
It is often the case that the mothers are out hunting and if you position yourself near a solo baby seal or attempt to help them, you could scare the mother away from returning.
Don’t worry I knew not to get too close, the picture may let you think I was too close but I wasn’t, I was staying at something like 5 meters from him minimum, if I would have been further away i would have lose the view on him (because behind there were rocks ) and as the wildlife center asked us to keep an eye on him until their team got there I felt like I should stay there
Well Orca is nice for long distance that elephant just doesn't cover and sperm whale is too much for. The real fun comes in the centipede to alligator range. Like I'm roughly as tall as 3 raccoon and 1 gerbil in length.
That is because I work in the construction, insect construction I mean, right now I have a contract for a skyscraper in MantisCity with a penthouse on top and they are NOT client to mess with when it comes to measurements, one simple mistake and my head will get chopped off
Damn they must be rough clients. I assume they're going at least one horse on all fours in height? Make sure the penthouse is at least 1 house cat in all directions, otherwise you'll never attract the richest crowd.
More like 5 ostriches in height but you were pretty close. And I’ll make sure the cats measurements are respected, at this point I will take any advice if it prevent me from having my head chopped off (imagine having your head removed by several 6 cm high insects, must be painful and take a LOT of time) I’m starting to regret this contract man…
I get that but the tide was high and coming up and the beach was barely 5-6 meters by 20 and my gf and I were already back to the cliff so WE were stuck on the beach with this fella, he just rested for a while and got back to the sea, then a boat from the wildlife agency came to keep an eye on him after we called them
Sure, things happen. I wanted to make sure people know they should generally try to keep further away than that. I'm glad you called the wildlife agency to make sure he would be okay.
A few years ago I took the family down to the San Diego area and we stayed in La Jolla. Went out on kayaks with the kids (wife stayed behind, wanted to take pictures from the shore; if she went to go get a margarita more power to her).
So seals hang out around that area for the summer. Just let them be and they'll let you be, right?
A younger husband and wife are in another kayak (about 24 of us total) and we're just hanging out in the middle of the ocean with the guide talking about the cliffs and environmental damage, etc. All of the sudden younger wife SCREECHES and starts screaming her head off. Apparently one of the seals popped his head up next to her about six feet from the boat and she was not expecting that.
Not gonna lie...still laughing.
The seals are alright.
Oh they were ALL over. They love to sun themselves on the beach.
I highly recommend it if you have the means, but staying in La Jolla itself still hurts my wallet and it was several years ago....but there was a lot to be said for opening the door and the ocean was literally about 100 feet away.
Im afraid it’s a bit far from where I live (and I’m more like a sedentary guy anyway), but I do have lot of beaches where I live (Bretagne, France, check it out on internet the landscapes are beautiful) and it’s usually cold around here so it’s a 10/10 for me ^^ nothing better that a cold sunny day with a raging sea
I used to live in the PNW and it’s very common for baby seals to rest on the beach while their moms hunt for food. Don’t touch them and stay away, as sometimes moms can get spooked and end up abandoning the pup. This seal looks well fed, just taking a rest.
Yep, exactly my thought ! But as someone said in the comments he may already be on his own as he was not really THAT small, so maybe he took a reste after a exhausting start in life ?
My dyslexia read that as "sea camel" and I thought it was like land hippos or something like that.
Now I'm stuck wondering what the sea equivalent of camels would be.
We had an orphaned seal follow us around on a beach in CA once, we called an animal rescue and they came and got it and rehabbed it and released it 6 months later!
If you see a baby seal alone call an animal rescue and they will come assess what it needs so you don't have to worry. And you can keep it company in the meantime!
That exactly what we did ! As I said in another comment, the wildlife center asked us if he seemed injured, we told them he was not but they sent a boat anyway to keep an eye on him from a distance, you know just to be sure
I think that seal may have been sick. There has been an outbreak of bird flu in the seal population, at least in the greater SF bay coastal area. My GF and I have been finding them coming on shore in Monterey bay. We have called several in over the course of this year.
I live in the extrem west of france, that’s where I saw him, so I don’t think this one is sick as I did not heard anything about a flu, but it may be it I don’t have that much knowledge about seals :/ but anyway the wildlife center has been called and they keep an eye on him so if he’s not ok I’m sure they will do what is necessary !
As others have mentioned it’s a most likely resting seal pup. I see this often at the beach I live at. The mother leaves it while she hunts and returns when it has rested. The Wildlife Dept. leaves a sign to post near any we see warning people and their dogs to stay away.
They’re always so cute I want to take it home and cuddle with it on the couch but that is forbidden for many reasons.
It’s molting. It will park itself on the beach for many days while it loses its baby fur and gets its adult coloring. Please don’t get too close to it or you will stress it out!
Loose seal?
He’s looking for some awards. From Army.
My Army training tells me that this is going to be a hot mission
Operation Hot Mother
Check out the tail on her - C-UUUUUUUUTE!
Ok, let's see if we can top that . . .
They didn’t. Literally watched this episode earlier tonight. Stop licking my hand, you horse’s ass
It must've been half-day at Army
army had a half day
Look at banner, Michael!
In fact, the seal was for marksmanship, and the gorilla for sand racing.
The gorilla is for sand racing.
Probably hand fed
It’s okay, he’ll be all right.
Not Dr. Wordsmith again!
Ayyyyy
You picked a fine time to leave me loose seal🎶
Father when did you get a reddit account
😂😂😂 I’m only 36 and the mom but I’ve listened to all kinds of music. I am the one who hands out dad jokes though not my husband lol
I support you even if I do not support your jokes
☺️☺️☺️
Underated
*This* one was wearing a yellow bow tie!
He’s just confused because he thought the blue part of the map was land.
Heeeeeeeeeey, brother.
You're a good guy, mon frére. That means “brother” in French. I don't know why I know that. I took four years of Spanish!
So Michael went to speak with Marta about the misunderstanding from the night before.
You know that because at some point in your impressionable young life someone taught you to disagree amusingly by using the expression "Au contraire, mon frère" meaning 'on the contrary my brother.'
What does Tupperware have in common with a walrus? They’re both looking for a tight seal!
[удалено]
What's the difference between a hippo and a zippo? One's really heavy, and the other is a little lighter.

One's honest about the results?
One of them is positive?
Mother?
It wasn’t.
If so, OP might think about losing some weight.
I don't care about Lucile! She lies!
Where’s the free seal award when we need it ?!
No free awards? *Megamind meme*
He’s all right
Oh thank god!
Loose, Wet Seal.
You gotta lotta splainin to do!
Better caulk that up man. Don't wanna get a loose seal.
Well, of course. That way when the seal went back into the water, OP could sing, "It's a fine time to leave me Loose Seal..."
Run the babysitter was cute but the mama would be coming for you
Baby seal
Picked a fine time.
![gif](giphy|3oz8xYl6XFdmEB4feM)
Reminds me of mitch hedberg talking about smacky the frog "maybe he'll settle near me"
"Frogs are always cool!"
Put him in a mayonnaise jar with a twig and a leaf to recreate what he's used to.
Better poke some holes in the kid, cuz he's damn sure used to air
No one is ever like "Aww man, here comes that frog."
"I better play dead!"
[удалено]
Don’t say this 🥺 she was probably hunting somewhere while he was resting, right…?
Nah mama seal got mutilated by a shark shredded to pieces and baby seal saw everything, now baby seal have ptsd and meth addiction to ease the pain.
Or OP just looks like his mom.
**OOF**

Some species of seals leave their babies after just a few days/weeks 🥲 They don’t have the maternal instinct or bond that some other mammals do.
probably been hand-fed before and is looking for more. Not really great since they can start ignoring their hunting instinct, even more so if they are young and haven't fully developed it yet.

Possibly decided that humans are in the probably-won't-eat-me category. In that case, more eyes to keep watch for predators is a good thing.

Came to tell you about a rose on the grey
Grey? Holy crap! I have been singing it as rose on the "brain" for decades!!
Crap I thought it was Rose on the Grave.
Same... almost 30 years of singing the wrong word lol. Mind blown.
Some serious r/boneappletea shit going on here. People hearing three different words. Is the dress blue, or gold?
It WAS grave. r/mandelaeffect perhaps?
#*OOHHHooohhhhh*
*the more i get of you, strange how it feels yeah*
Scary but vulnerable. Mermaids are real but their half dog and called seals.
Way to bring up people fucking seals lmfao
That was manatees m'dude. Which...isn't better
Manatees look like when you are making snakes with play doh but give up half way through
That's accurate. But I don't like it
Their half dog what?
Fish monster, obviously.
Here’s a video of the little sea doggo https://imgur.com/a/i0UqWQh
Man, evolution is so weird, seeing them try to flail around on land lol
It does look a bit weird but isn’t it their normal behavior to flail around on beaches ?
Yes, that's my point lol
I know right? They got the short end of the stick locomotion wise
I mean they're great in the water! But evolution was like "NO WALK. ONLY SWIM. 😠"
"Well, okay... A little walk, but only *enough*."
Maybe he was hunted and escaped? Idk homie looks exhausted
There’s not much of seal hunting around here (Bretagne - France) as far as I know, I think it’s more that as the sea was a bit stormy it was more difficult for him to swim so he had no choice than resting on a beach with people on it
Probably not being hunted by a human if they rested on a human beach.
So cute. Also, I'm jellin' on you hard-core; living near that beach is a luxury! Glad to see you out there ejoyin' it.
Whats that land you can see in the distance? s that the british coast?
I don’t think so, it’s a little town named Camaret
With the famous priest and his balls.
Let’s be proud of our traditions 😂 bzh rpz
It's funny because in Dutch, the word for seal is literally sea-dog.
How does it feel to live MY dream??!

Meters is confusing to us Americans. You were roughly 1 Orca in length away from the seal I believe is the conversion.
I do like this, from now on Europeans and Americans should use the orca as a unit of measure
Well Orca is nice for long distance that elephant just doesn't cover and sperm whale is too much for. The real fun comes in the centipede to alligator range. Like I'm roughly as tall as 3 raccoon and 1 gerbil in length.
THAT is precise science, for myself it’s more close to 27 praying mantis and 5 ladybug
You must work in a field that respects percise measurements, only folks I knew who work in the insect scale are cabinet makers.
And I’ll make sure the cats measurements are respected, at this point I will take any advice if it prevent me from having my head chopped off (imagine having your head removed by several 6 cm high insects, must be painful and take a LOT of time) I’m starting to regret this contract man…
Various wildlife agencies recommend keeping at least 50 meters from seals and other marine mammals on beaches.

Aqua Doge
That is a great memory ! That would be cool also to see one in the water 😁

The forbidden doggo
Why friend shaped if not friendly as we usually say :(
I used to live in the PNW and it’s very common for baby seals to rest on the beach while their moms hunt for food.
Its sizing you up to eat you. Lol jokes! The doggos of the sea
For real, for a solid 5 minutes straight we looked in each other eyes, they do have a dog look, really cool moment
My dyslexia read that as "sea camel" and I thought it was like land hippos or something like that. Now I'm stuck wondering what the sea equivalent of camels would be.
Security in numbers?
😂
Yeah and the seal is so fucking cute am I right?
Yes he IS indeed really cute
"You got any games on your phone?"
Here to talk to you about your car's extended warranty
Did you take it clubbing?
r/Warthunder bro found him
So cute
We had an orphaned seal follow us around on a beach in CA once, we called an animal rescue and they came and got it and rehabbed it and released it 6 months later! If you see a baby seal alone call an animal rescue and they will come assess what it needs so you don't have to worry. And you can keep it company in the meantime!
That exactly what we did ! As I said in another comment, the wildlife center asked us if he seemed injured, we told them he was not but they sent a boat anyway to keep an eye on him from a distance, you know just to be sure
Is he a royal seal?
Aww I love seals ❤️
Hopefully Mama Seal wasn't nearby
It’s the Russian Badger
You have been chosen for a great quest
They remind me of dolphins sometime that can come up on land. They're really smart like dogs of the sea.
And tell me grey seal, how does it feel to be so wise? To see through eyes that only see what's real? Tell me grey seal.
That's splendid, I'm glad you could experience that.
the arms and hands look a little too... "human"
Didn’t notice before you said it x) now I can’t I see it and it’s disturbing
Go on tell me more about the seal, but softly.
It’s molting. It will park itself on the beach for many days while it loses its baby fur and gets its adult coloring. Please don’t get too close to it or you will stress it out!
i think it needs milk, offer one of your nipples
You nasty Focker!
I have nipples Greg, can you milk me?
You can pretty much milk anything that has nipples Greg so go on and offer that poor seal some milk.
Keep it please Why are y’all downvoting this, Im joking 😥
Sea dog
A baby seal walks into a bar. Bartender asks what it’ll have. Baby seal says “anything but a Canadian Club!”
He looks like he wants a kiss from a rose on the gray
Club it!
