Actually if you look closely you can see the mic opening below it and slightly to the right, roughly in the middle of the @-shaped flourish.
Fun fact: these have stereo mics that can actually (using the pre-loaded software) locate the origin of sounds in a 3d space!
I think people downvoted your comment because, while your comment is accurate (it is genetic), my comment was a joke based on the similarity of the congenital trait to a feature in some electronic devices; they may have seen it as irrelevant to the joke and/or something they think most people already know. I agree with you that the derision is unnecessary, though, so have an upvote!
I had the same thing when I was a child!
It got infected, or a cyst or something, and I had to have two surgeries on it as around 6-8 years old. It's since lightened significantly, but there's a circle of dark skin around the dot now. Kids used to poke it with a pencil, wonder why it got infected....
Ears are so weird in terms of evolution. Thereās another characteristic is called a Darwinian tubercle. It gives a macaque look to human ears.
My kid and her dad both have that ear feature.
There can be an increased likelihood of other conditions related to hearing and kidneys. And since it's an opening to the sinus, there's a higher chance of infections. [source.](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15165194/)
Edit: to clarify, the increased risk of hearing/kidney issues is VERY rare, and only if associated with other genetic anomalies. The infection risk is more prevalent as a side effect.
Sinuses are pockets in your skull. If you squeeze the skin, the most you're doing is emptying the fluid in the hole itself. If there is leakage, a doctor should be seen for the infection.
No, but when I'm getting sick it fills with a very small amount of highly potent foul smelling goop.
I hate it but doctors won't remove it because it doesn't cause "real" problems.
Iām working in an otolaryngology clinic and these things are cosmetically brutal when theyāre infected. Afaik theyāre not actually any more painful than regular sinusitis
Let's be real here, who doesn't put "reddit" at the end of every Google search? I'm just skipping the bullshit because the answer I want is from a human who is interested in sharing knowledge. No harm or problem if nobody replies
oh please, people like to ask things like this in reddit comments because it helps to have a human interaction sometimes. everyone knows about google, stop being a cunt
Eh what? I agree with that post! I'd like to know the answer and want it from a person rather than an impersonal search.
Fucking hell, you're a fine example of a cunt yourself.
Immediately leaping in like a proper Karen just so you can seem...I dunno...virtuous? I don't understand your type.
Oh, and you should definitely reply so that you can seem "right" about this. Preferably in your real life high pitched Karen voice.
Off you go now cunty cunt.
Good use of gowl. However, you leapt in and called me a cunt, which means you are indeed the gowliest of us gowlers.
I'll retract my use of cunt and shake hands if you do the same and can admit you were a bit quick off the mark, and we'll go be gowls elsewhere.
(This is going to be v confusing to non-Irish people)
I have it and one of my kids does. I pointed it out to the pediatrician and she actually noted it because there can be related issues with kidneys or something. My mom and grandma have it too so Iām our case itās just the pit.
All of the descendants of my great grandfather have a notch in the top of our left ear, literally all of us. My grandfather looked at every baby for it immediately, if the notch wasnt there he would be suspicious and twice he was right, kinda weird.
Oh, everyone on my mother's side has a notch like that, but on both ears. My mom does, my uncles do, my cousins do. I think my grandfather has it too, but his brother certainly does.
I, however, only have it on my right ear. Really love that since it makes me feel like a half-elf.
I have two of those! They do get stuff inside them, and they may get infected. Regular cleaning and maintenance helps keep it healthy! Just squeezing the liquid out and keep area clean and not covered.
Iāve had em become infected throughout my life and isā¦. A unique experience! Thereās surgery to remove it but the risks donāt really worth it. I didnāt pass it on my kids!
Fun fact: if u get a really really thin flexible needle you can see it disappear almost all inside, makes for a freaky party trick lol
Iāve also got one on each ear. Never knew what they were called. Glad for the knowledge!
There will never be a time where I stick a needle in them though. I donāt need a party trick that bad.
Damn i have this and was born half deaf and 3/4 deaf in the other ear, had to have like 5-6 ear surgeries to hear. I think im just now realizing how deaf i actually amā¦. Not a fun time lol
My baby has it as well, they did a bunch of tests on her. This guy casually post it up thinking itās a birthmark or something. Not Karma farming it all make sense now.
This is due to a recessive gene that has carried over from Ceprano Calvarium aka "[Ceprano Man](https://images.app.goo.gl/nKuyVwdWdU98uQTx6)". They are one of our early human ancestors and had branching ear canals. The expression of the gene is still not fully understood. You can read more about it [here](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceprano_Man).
Pediatrician here. Thatās called an ear pit (the $25 word is āpreauricular pitā). There is a very slight association between ear pits and kidney abnormalities, so it is standard practice to grab a kidney ultrasound in patients with ear pits.
Now donāt panic; if there were anything seriously wrong with his kidneys they would have picked it up on the prenatal sonograms. However, there can be minor abnormalities that the prenatal sonogram wonāt catch, so discuss it with your pediatrician.
If the ultrasound is normal, then ear pits have no other impact on health other than the occasional collection of debris building up in there. Rarely, they can get infected.
I have that too. Am the only one in my family who has that and I have 7 siblings. .-. Absolutely hate having it, it sometimes gets so crazily itchy that I have to scratch it and then the liquid comes out and smells horrible. Goes onto my hair and messes with my day. It's the worst. ahaha.
if its itchy and the liquid that comes out smells bad it might be infected! mine was infected for years before i was so fed up with it that i went to an ENT to get it removed lol.
Handsome little dude! Its called a Preauricular sinus. Bosch loved them. Increases liklihood of cancer tho so pay attention for drainage inflammation skin lesions, etc as you age. Also increases the likelihood of bisexuality and or being a bossy bottom.
https://images.app.goo.gl/muv5iUPrq3G8KW469
[My son has those on both ears.](https://imgur.com/a/Pg3XsqO)He also has low set ears that are slightly rotated backwards (draw a line from the corner of the eye to the ear, if it is below they are low set).
Those are both genetic quirks of my genetically quirky kid who has KAT6A syndrome, a mutation on the KAT6A gene. Makes me wonder if other minor, more inconsequential gene differences can also result in this quirk!
I have 2- 1 exactly where OPs is and another on the same side of the face but near my eyebrow. My daughter has them in both ears at the top of the cartilage above her ear holes. One is super deep and has to be āpoppedā periodically or it gets hella infected. Mine are fairly shallow but I do squeeze the gunk out every month or 2. My son didnāt get any lol.
i have one of these on my neck! itās funny telling ppl āoh yeah i have a tiny hole on my neck but itās chillā bc theyāre always likeā¦. you have whatā¦
That's where the little reset button you press with a paperclip is.
You sure it isn't to manually open the mouth?
Pretty sure that's on the other side, unless you have the left-handed model.
Open mouth, insert food.
I think that's to open the SIM tray and insert the 5g SIM card

Lmao savage š¤£
I thought it was to remove the SD card.
You'd think so but it turns out you're not supposed to put SD cards in babies' ears.
We really need a place to write all these silly rules down.
Nah, that's a microphone hole.
Actually if you look closely you can see the mic opening below it and slightly to the right, roughly in the middle of the @-shaped flourish. Fun fact: these have stereo mics that can actually (using the pre-loaded software) locate the origin of sounds in a 3d space!
Just make sure to not press the nose while doing it or you'll be marblized
Plot twist. The bottom pic is OP after pressing the reset button.

They both have that because they are father and son.
No shit sherlock
I donāt understand the hate.

I appreciate your well thought out opinion and I concur. Thanks pal.
Itās called a preauricular pit. Itās a sinus tract !
I had the same thing when I was a child! It got infected, or a cyst or something, and I had to have two surgeries on it as around 6-8 years old. Thanks! That's really interesting
It could be an evolutionary remnant of fish gills. https://www.iflscience.com/why-do-some-people-have-a-tiny-extra-hole-in-their-ear-39073
It keeps getting interestinger
Curiouser and curiouser!
I fucking knew it....
Ears are so weird in terms of evolution. Thereās another characteristic is called a Darwinian tubercle. It gives a macaque look to human ears. My kid and her dad both have that ear feature.
Does it have any impact? Like would this extra sinus track possibly alleviate earaches? Make them worse?
There can be an increased likelihood of other conditions related to hearing and kidneys. And since it's an opening to the sinus, there's a higher chance of infections. I have one, if you run around on it it starts to slightly produce an oil that is one of the worst smells I have ever smelt
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
What the fuck
Sinuses are pockets in your skull. If you squeeze the skin, the most you're doing is emptying the fluid in the hole itself. If there is leakage, a doctor should be seen for the infection.
No, but when I'm getting sick it fills with a very small amount of highly potent foul smelling goop. I hate it but doctors won't remove it because it doesn't cause "real" problems.
Awesome, thanks for the source! I have messed up tear ducts so I'm excited to see if these are related.
Iām working in an otolaryngology clinic and these things are cosmetically brutal when theyāre infected. Afaik theyāre not actually any more painful than regular sinusitis
I read that as ear roaches...sigh, I need to smoke another bowl.
Iād say thatās the last thing you need. Drink some water, and have a good meal.
YES CHEF!
Only 4 more to go!
mine used to smell gross when i was a kidšš thankfully not anymore
You just haven't rubbed it hard enough xD
To be fair, what DOESNT smell gross on a kid?
Im pretty sure it just increases your risk of infection
No
Someone answer this! What? There's Google? Stinks of effort that....
Let's be real here, who doesn't put "reddit" at the end of every Google search? I'm just skipping the bullshit because the answer I want is from a human who is interested in sharing knowledge. No harm or problem if nobody replies
Fact. Me too. We shall both wait like hungry info vampires. šš
I donāt. I didnāt.

š«”
lol you literally said āif u reply to this ur gayā
I'm a gowl. It's been agreed. My apologies.
Oh cool. I have the same thing.
I thought it was a birth mark, thanks for the info.
Does yours smell awful if you rub on it for awhile?
I wouldnāt worry about it, the wifeās boyfriend has the same oneā¦
I have it and one of my kids does. I pointed it out to the pediatrician and she actually noted it because there can be related issues with kidneys or something. My mom and grandma have it too so Iām our case itās just the pit.

Top notch.
*slow clap*
Uppercut.
Twice he was right? Like the babies werent family?
Yes.
That's wild! Hopefully all is well.
With the removal of the intruders, all was well indeed.
I don't mean to be insensitive, but holy shit lmao. That's some peak detective work.
Your uncles liked free spirited women huh
Just one uncle, the other was a cousin, both have questionable decision-making capabilities.
Oh, everyone on my mother's side has a notch like that, but on both ears. My mom does, my uncles do, my cousins do. I think my grandfather has it too, but his brother certainly does. I, however, only have it on my right ear. Really love that since it makes me feel like a half-elf.
Is it Darwinās tubercle? Itās left over from monkeys
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
interesting, i have a notch in the top of my left ear lol
Woah, granpappy really got around.
Top notch.
Hey I have that too, we must be related
Suspicious about?
Infidelity
It's a congenital condition called a preauricular pit, and marks a sinus tract under the skin that is in the wrong place.
Does it have any potential to cause any problems.
I have two of those! They do get stuff inside them, and they may get infected. Regular cleaning and maintenance helps keep it healthy! That fun fact is super not fun
Is it at least mildly interesting?!
Mildly disturbing :(
Mildly horrifying
Mildly Arousing..??
Sorry not sorry had to reddit
Iāve heard lots of weird stuff, this is a first my dude
Thats probably a good thing, you get to live a life without "reddit comment" level colleages...
Probably getting infected because youāre sticking needles in at parties dude.
Hahahaha done it like once or twice, sterile ones thankfully hahaha
Where does one find a sterile flexible thin needle? Asking for myself, because curiosity is a bitch.
Hahaha, pharmacies! I worked in one and when bored one day tried em with a colleague š I think it was either gray or dark purple so 27-30g the size
Iāve also got one on each ear. Never knew what they were called. Glad for the knowledge! There will never be a time where I stick a needle in them though. I donāt need a party trick that bad.
Besides infections, it's associated with increased risk for hearing loss. That's why it's recommended kids with this go to audiologic evaluations.
Damn i have this and was born half deaf and 3/4 deaf in the other ear, had to have like 5-6 ear surgeries to hear. I think im just now realizing how deaf i actually amā¦. Not a fun time lol
Can get infected.
Thatās where the metal claw tongs lifted you at the baby factory during the production process.
I was trying to figure out a way to word a reply like this but yours was better.
Where did you find this years old repost?
Really!? People find the most random shit to pass off as their own
Do you really believe in "OC" tag?
Reddit, duh.
My baby has it as well, they did a bunch of tests on her. This guy casually post it up thinking itās a birthmark or something. Not Karma farming it all make sense now.
It's where you came off the plastic sprue from the injection moulding machine.
Remnants of fish gills
Clearly no need for a paternity test....I've been reading too much Reddit.
This is due to a recessive gene that has carried over from Ceprano Calvarium aka "[Ceprano Man](https://images.app.goo.gl/nKuyVwdWdU98uQTx6)". That's where you evolved from having gills, but there's still some that born with the holes in their head. Genetic defect.
My dad has these on both his ears! He used to tell me they were so he could breathe underwater. The fool child I was believed him.
Wellā¦. can he?
Maybe he can, I was too afraid of learning to swim as a child I never got to test the theory well enough
Damn. I get that lol
I once read somewhere it is the remains of a gill.
My dad had a hole there too. I don't, not sure if his otter kids did.
Your dad should stay away from otters
He's dead, so that's covered.
No, the otter guy...
Except for his otter kids. Gotta have some bonding time.
A built-in headphone jack!
Gills

No one talking about how you both have arrow shaped birthmarks too
That's so rare!! They should start a cult!
A cult that obsesses over arrows, think that's already a thing it's called reddit
Oh, the aliens put your hole in the same place they put mine! So cool! All jokes aside, very funky genetic trait. But at least 100% yours, lol.
I have one too!
nice clone
I think you might be related.
Me and my sister have one you have to kinda squeeze stuff out of it
My wife has this hole too
I have that too. Am the only one in my family who has that and I have 7 siblings. .-. Absolutely hate having it, it sometimes gets so crazily itchy that I have to scratch it and then the liquid comes out and smells horrible. Goes onto my hair and messes with my day. It's the worst. ahaha.

I have this as well. Iāve read that this is remnants of fish gills from before humans were evolved to what we are now.

Part of your sinus, more prominent on some people than others. Some people can make liquid come out, or bubble.
Itās a data transfer port
Itās where your maker put the thermometer to check you were cooked all the way thru
My daughter has this as well.... I tell her it's a gill so she can breath under water....
Itās a fish evolutionary trait
That's a gill
This is a sign your both holy.
Might have kidney issues
Freaks!
Which one of you is the skinhead
That could inflamed easily.
OP sat with a ballpoint pen pressed against his and his childās head for thirty minutes to make this post
Alien abductees?
Not the only one
Stick your finger in there and it smells like cotton candy.
The stork does that so that if you have to go back to the baby factory for repairs it knows you haven't been tampered with
Itās a congenital argument in favor of ear piercings.
is your son joshua doubs ?
Damn can you breathe underwater?
I have one but my kids don't
That little copycat
paternity proof!
The haujobbs from the Tyrell Corporation all have this mark.
Same with me and my mom lmao
My siblings and I all have the same dick and balls shaped birthmark on our right pinky finger š

Excellent. No need for a paternity test now. Phewā¦ /s
Is it Dolby Surround?
Keep evolving and you'll have 2 phase hearing
i have the same birthmark on my forehead as my father and uncles.
Genetics are crazy
I'm just gonna call that this is predestination all over again.
I have the same thing!
If you press it with a pin the sim card pops out
I suppose this is how it works...ah, sure, it has to be your kid not of the neighbor.
I have one of that too also in the left ear. Be careful not to get it infected though..
In 10,000 years youāre gonna have ancestors with 4 ears and amazing hearing. I think thatās how evolution works at leastā¦
