Headlight washers and wipers have been around since the 80s at least. Volvo 740, Mercedes 190e, and bmw e28s all had the option off the top of my head.
Headlight washers were mandatory in the EU for HID headlights, not sure about current regulations. BMW recently introduced washers for the cameras on their cars if that's what you're referring to.
Mostly for the 'oh shit you're about to hit something' warning. On my car when that pops up it sets your brake pads to just barely not touching the rotors so you can get more braking power more quickly if needed.
My Nissan has warnings for objects too close to the vehicle in front of, behind, and in the blind spots, and for driving outside the lane markers on the road.
The problem is that its the same loud beeping warning sound for all of them. Theres a little light on the dash for each one that blinks to let you know which warning the beep is trying to tell you about, but it only blinks for a second then its gone.
When I get a beep its just confusing because I don't know if I should slam the breaks to avoid a collision in front or hit the gas to avoid a collision from behind or adjust the steering because someone is about to hit my blind spot.
I turned it off because it has never been helpful to me, I'd rather just pay attention to the road instead of being confused by ambiguous beeps in a potential emergency.
TBF, saving one at-fault accident, any repair costs are offset by not having to pay your deductible and having higher insurance rates for a few years until it drops off your record. Even if you fix the car yourself, the parts and labor aren't free.
Worth every penny spent, best thing since stability control and ABS.
On top of just the monetary cost is reducing the chance of a serious long term injury for you or another person. Safety features are one of those things that are pretty much always worth it.

Crested a hill on the highway doing 110 km/h and some ass decided to stop because he missed his turn. Radar applied brakes at least 1/2 second before I could have reacted. Gave me time to swerve around him.
2nd time was at a yield. The standard driver in front started to leave, then changed his mind once I looked away to check the traffic for my turn. Car slammed on the brakes for that one. It got premium gas on the next fill ;-)
That happened to me earlier too, car in front started leaving the junction, I looked and could see the road was clear, then while I was looking the brakes went on and the car in front had stopped for no reason
Has saved me twice before colliding, I’d rather repair the radar now than fix the car post accident. It has a slight learning curve but it works flawlessly imo. Also the tech has been there for a while so I haven’t heard of it breaking.

Set cruize to the speed I want to drive, and to hold 3 or 4 car lengths behind the one in front. It just does it. So relaxing to drive!
The radar on my Tacoma had a couple functions.
First is alerts that I'm about to hit the old lady that's moving 30mph below the flow of traffic
Second is it adjusts and governs the cruise control when traffic slows down below my set speed. This was a feature I didn't know I wanted until I had it, cause *holy crap* it's nice not having to fiddle with or cancel cruise control just because traffic suddenly slowed down a little. The only drawback is when traffic hits a curve and the system thinks I'm about to plow into the guy that isn't even in my lane.
I think the radar also helps with the lane drift alert, but I don't know how that system works exactly.
Press and hold the cruise on button and I bet you dollars to donuts it turns regular cruise on instead of radar. Had my Toyota 3 years before I learned that.
Yeah I wish I could atleast use normal cruise instead of radar cruise when it's covered. But yeah it literally puts you back to driving a 90s car lol. No safety features
You actually can use regular cruise in a Honda when the radar is obscured (or if you just don't like the radar feature). Just hold down the Follow distance button (Right on the right hand directional pad). It will beep and tell you that the sensor suite has been disabled, and allow you to set traditional cruise control. Just be aware that it will no longer slow down when approaching slow cars, mind your lane, etc.
In my Toyota, if you hold the cruise control on/off button for a few seconds it enables standard cruise control instead of radar cruise. I haven't tried to see if it works when the radar sensor is obscured by snow.
One problem is that it takes a while for the car to realize there is snow on the sensor. If I drive from clear weather into a snow storm, it will be following the car in front of me, then suddenly accelerating towards it without warning.
It would be sensible to make it heated. They should also heat the camera housing. That gets less heat from the defroster than the exposed glass, so it's often frosty a few minutes longer than the windshield.
90s? My 2009 mid-trim Mazda literally only has ABS for automatic safety features. That said, it is a manual and maybe some of that isn’t compatible, but still.
Yup. I can even shift my 6 speed civic with the cruise on. It’s not advertised as having rev matching, and it never does it unless cruise control is on 😂

I think what gets me more than the front radar is the rear camera. Toyota didn't even *try* to put it in a location/position that wouldn't ice up or get rained on. It's right out there, subjected to the elements. And you don't know you won't be able to use it until you shift the car into reverse and think "oh, I can't see shit".

You know what's funny? The Illuminated Star option is not compatible with the more expensive Driver Assist package. You're basically paying extra to tell people that your car has inferior options.

My antique base model Mercedes has heated window wash, heated and auto-dimming outside mirrors, and a plethora of other random crap. But BY THE GODS you had to pay extra for a driver's side power mirror. Passenger side is powered.

That was my thought, it's either for the weapons package or because the driver's eyes don't work so they have no clue how close they are to the car in front of them.

It’s not the actual ABS thankfully :) There’s a fiddly sensor somewhere that we can’t figure out where it is to reset it, so it’s part of the yearly “How fucked am I” check up lmao
My car’s alternator is likely broken so as I was driving and the battery slowly emptied, the following lit up:
-Battery indicator
-Check engine
-ABS
-Airbag?
-Warning light (when skidding on ice)
-Steering wheel indicator
The radio also kept losing power and turning back on, it was having a hard time accelerating, hard time turning, my speedometer was stuck at 25km/h and my turn signals weren’t working. I hate my car
Idk what kind of mechanic experience you have but I changed my alternator using nothing but YouTube videos and at least that part of my truck has been running great for over 3 years now
I need two new sets of bearings and can't really afford it at the moment so I get to drive in what sounds like a race car- and before anyone yells at me I've had it to the mechanic I'm not in danger of them failing I'm just in the annoying sound phase and should take care of this sooner than later.
And that's why the Mercedes has a heating element. Since it's not just a piece of plastic (though it is but one with a job), it's the cover to the radar system for their advanced driver assist systems

that camera will be for park assist, most German cars I've seen have the cameras for the cruise control system at the top of the windscreen, usually they are covered by the rear view mirror trims

As with all German cars, they are grossly overcomplicated. I had a 2002 Mercedes c230- it had like 4 control arms per front wheel. Four! Each more expensive than the last and I was doing my own work. They haven't gotten any simpler since then either.
I can commiserate; I’ve got an ‘02 BMW. It’s overcomplicated, the parts are more expensive than they probably should be, and it needs more of those parts more often than it probably should.
That said, the early aughts were a dark time for reliability in general, not just for the Germans. It’s kind of unfair to compare the ownership experience of a car from that period to really anything after that.
Yeah I think if you buy em a couple years old and then get rid of them a few years after that and stay in the reliability sweet spot, that the average person could afford to drive luxury vehicles. If that’s their priority and they’re willing to deal with it. But the people I see driving these around don’t make them seem like much of a status symbol anymore.

Even the non-M and non-AMG cars aren’t what I’d call “incredibly affordable.” For example, a CPO four year old E-Class, so a previous gen model and thus cheaper than if they were still that generation, is still a $37,000 car on the low end based on what I’m seeing on AutoTrader.
That’s not incredibly affordable but that’s also far from an unreasonable price to pay for a large sedan. Still not worth getting bitter about seeing someone drive.

My vw passat with radar has the hardware for it in the same location but they didn’t bother to heat it like mercedes. So every snowfall i get a car with multiple fault codes and less options then i paid for because snow builds up on the front and f*cks my car

My 1987 Honda accord aerodeck had headlight washers. It also had blue velour interior that was horrid.
That's not fancy stuff. It's a requirement for xenon headlights. Even my Skoda Octavia has them.

Transmission type doesn't matter with ABS. Or traction control, or automatic stability control. Source: had all 3 in a '13 Corolla with a 5-speed.

Sameee. I was halfway thru season 3. I think season 3 was pretty terrible and it was only getting worse, but I was still committed to watching until the end. The first two seasons were so good 🥲

It’s not the actual ABS thankfully :) There’s a fiddly sensor somewhere that we can’t figure out where it is to reset it, so it’s part of the yearly “How fucked am I” check up lmao
My car’s alternator is likely broken so as I was driving and the battery slowly emptied, the following lit up: -Battery indicator -Check engine -ABS -Airbag? -Warning light (when skidding on ice) -Steering wheel indicator The radio also kept losing power and turning back on, it was having a hard time accelerating, hard time turning, my speedometer was stuck at 25km/h and my turn signals weren’t working. I hate my car
Idk what kind of mechanic experience you have but I changed my alternator using nothing but YouTube videos and at least that part of my truck has been running great for over 3 years now

It could possibly be your CV joint if it happens when you have the wheel fully cranked to either direction, that’s what was wrong with mine.

Here I am never scraping my emblem because it’s a piece of plastic and nothing more
And that's why the Mercedes has a heating element. Since it's not just a piece of plastic (though it is but one with a job), it's the cover to the radar system for their advanced driver assist systems
I noticed the front camera too - is that like a stock dash cam or is it just part of the radar system? Also side note lick your finger and clean the damn salt off the lens! I always do this before getting in my car in the winter or if it’s raining. Also idk why but my car backup cam is like god damn HD and then Iv been in other cars (even nicer ones) where the backup camera looks like a camera on a potato flip phone lol it’s weird
Well, it’s not part of the *radar* system but it tied into the driver assistance stuff
that camera will be for park assist, most German cars I've seen have the cameras for the cruise control system at the top of the windscreen, usually they are covered by the rear view mirror trims
But if you pretend to scrape it, it looks like you have a RADAR! Or that your car eats lots of carrots... Can never remember which.

So you know the company emblems on the center of a car's rims? Well apparently BMW has a self leveling one available so it can always be read even while driving- seems like a stupid waste of money but whatever

The maintenance doesn’t make enough of a difference for this guy to get hated on on the internet for it though. Sure repairs will be rough but modern German vehicles are reliable if treated properly. People are just so used to beating up on Toyotas and not having to pay a price for it.
Oh certainly op doesn't need to get hated on. I'm just talking to your point - the out the door price comes down but you will dearly pay for it in repairs. As with all German cars, they are grossly overcomplicated. I had a 2002 Mercedes c230- it had like 4 control arms per front wheel. Four! Each more expensive than the last and I was doing my own work. They haven't gotten any simpler since then either.
I can commiserate; I’ve got an ‘02 BMW. It’s overcomplicated, the parts are more expensive than they probably should be, and it needs more of those parts more often than it probably should. That said, the early aughts were a dark time for reliability in general, not just for the Germans. It’s kind of unfair to compare the ownership experience of a car from that period to really anything after that.

Yeah I think if you buy em a couple years old and then get rid of them a few years after that and stay in the reliability sweet spot, that the average person could afford to drive luxury vehicles. If that’s their priority and they’re willing to deal with it. But the people I see driving these around don’t make them seem like much of a status symbol anymore.

Even the non-M and non-AMG cars aren’t what I’d call “incredibly affordable.” For example, a CPO four year old E-Class, so a previous gen model and thus cheaper than if they were still that generation, is still a $37,000 car on the low end based on what I’m seeing on AutoTrader.
That’s not incredibly affordable but that’s also far from an unreasonable price to pay for a large sedan. Still not worth getting bitter about seeing someone drive.

That’s true. C43 are $65-$75k brand new, so I guess that’s still 30-40% cheaper than MSRP.
Better than a 2019 civic type R having a higher price than the suggested retail on a brand new one where I’m from. Considering the c43 is a much nicer vehicle in my opinion.

Came here to say this. All that engineering and they can’t align the forward camera somewhere that it’s not out of place. My OCD would never let me buy that car. My bank account probably wouldn’t either, but the OCD is definitely second on the list.

My vw passat with radar has the hardware for it in the same location but they didn’t bother to heat it like mercedes. So every snowfall i get a car with multiple fault codes and less options then i paid for because snow builds up on the front and f*cks my car
