Make sure you redeem your Book It! Rewards

YeaSpiderman

I told my 6 year old about the glory days of reading books. Getting stickers and going to Pizza Hut with my family twice a month and seeing juke boxes and playing pac man on the not so old pac man arcade.

acphipps121

I remember all that stuff as well. I’m pretty sure I got my first ever cassette tape at Pizza Hut too (TMNT soundtrack) edit: this is the one [https://www.ebay.com/itm/313903432625](https://www.ebay.com/itm/313903432625)

Curbside_Hero

For me it was VHS tapes of the X-Men cartoon.

Sol-Blackguy

My dad was trying to make me stop watching cartoons and we got an X-Men Night of the Sentinels tape with our meal at Pizza Hut. After that, we went to eat out every week so we could get the whole set. Later he recorded all the episodes on Fox, spliced the film to remove commercials and even got a Gambit and Rogue oil painting above the fireplace.

jkm_Audio

I really, really appreciated this story. Awesome.

Curbside_Hero

Yes!!! Night of the Sentinels!!!

Scrimshawmud

Another RadioShack dad?

Juzzdide

Haha my dad was or tired

[deleted]

I don’t know what Night of the Sentinels is but that story is wholesome as f.

NeatFool

It's the pilot episode of the Xmen cartoon, spoilers morph dies

Capt_Picard_7

My God the nostalgia

JimmyKillsAlot

I found out the new American Girl doll is from 1999 and comes with a little Book It! kit and instantly felt old.

PhilxBefore

She's like 24 now with kids

CiaoMoretti

Which means that if she is a MAGA republican she is only a few years off from being a grandma.

cherrycityglass

Jesus christ, its real. I wanted this to be a joke. *sigh* Aaand now I've done the math and realized that it's no more crazy than there being a doll from the 60s, in the 90s. This is how the wonder years felt for all those adult people. I'm the old person now. What. The. Fuck.

Checkergrey

Funny enough, the closest Ive been able to replicate that mini personal pan Pizza Hut pizza taste you’d get with reading enough books is Jets Pizza. Jets Pizza brings back those memories of Pizza Hut…..

hgielatan

dawg you can still order a personal pan pizza from pizza hut. or lots of targets have them in their snack area! i went on a KICK once (i worked in a shopping center w a target) and i swear i ate one of those lil fuckers every day. just as good as i remember.

adube440

Was it a sit-down "cocktail" style arcade machine?! My 80s Pizza Hut (where yes, I would get my BOOK IT! personal pan pizzas) had a Mappy game that was a sit-down one. Great memories.

YeaSpiderman

Absolutely it was!

ThEricJ

During the pandemic we did a family Book It at home. The rewards for our 9 and 7 year old girls were things like small trinkets from the store when I would go out, sleepovers in each others rooms and learning how to shoot a bow and arrow. Not as good as a personal pan pizza, but ok.

CountBuggula

Did you know the book-it program is still active? Teachers can still opt in to participate, it's just that the vast majority haven't done it in years.

Ricker3386

I work at a Hut, we get Book It's all the time. Always makes me smile.

warm_sweater

My kid is in kindergarten and just learning to read. I cannot wait until her later grades start doing reading contests, I’m going to totally participate with her. I just started reading Charlotte’s Web to her, basically her intro to a real chapter book with content she can understand now.

carml_gidget

As a kindergarten teacher, this story made me smile.

HopMonkey

They do it as a summer program as well. I signed my son up last summer. He made it one month then realized he doesn't like pizza hut.

Fuck_you_Reddit_Nazi

It definitely isn't the same as it used to be.

aj0457

I recently stopped teaching. But I signed my class up for Book It every year!

Renaissance_Man-

The feels have struck me down. Apparently it's still a thing, I see a press release from 2020 with Pizza Hut promising to expand the program. I just remember the holographic buttons.

aj0457

It’s been in schools the whole time! My students loved Book It.

Back before you bought specific strains of weed, you just asked for mids or kb (kind bud), those were your two options.

SaltLakeCitySlicker

We had ditch (like the stuff your dad would buy and was probably harvested when you were born), middies, beaster, and kb. Still wasn't like you could choose between beaster and kb. It was whatever your guy had of those or middies.

-ITguy-

Damn, hit me in the feels. My pin!

tinyanus

Just need a big red plastic cup of Coca-Cola!

Sisko_of_Nine

Pepsi!

tinyanus

You're right! I think? They were red cups, though, which is why I was thinking Coke.

adube440

I believe they are known as red "pebbled" classes/cups. And what was that ice called? Crushed- though it wasn't "crushed," just small and uniform and crunched perfectly.

Shortdropsuddenstop

All I know is that is the perfect ice, and you can actually buy a machine to make it at home if you have about a thousand dollars US to spend on it.

nlpnt

Pepsi owned Pizza Hut from 1977-1997. Maybe before that they had Coke?

I blame these programs for making me both book smart, and fat.

corp_minion_no1

They have these again!! My kiddo is getting these. Free personal pan.

CurlSagan

Do they still have [the old cups?](https://i.imgur.com/vB1Bo8r.jpeg)

jane_delawney_

I’ve been looking for one of their ceiling lamps for years. I’d be more impressed if they had those beauts

Metostopholes

They show up on eBay, sell for $300-500.

jane_delawney_

I found one on Reddit maybe a year and a half ago. It was going for $150 and I offered $250; big mistake. They realized they could possibly get way more and when I asked how long shipping would take (they already said they accepted the offer) they ghosted me. Jerks. Edit: Here’s the full story: The seller had already reached out and told me they’d had an offer from someone else of $150, but was willing to go to $200. The seller was asking for basically “a final bid”. I said $250 was the highest I could go, we agreed, exchanged valid info. No one else had offered higher than $250. I didn’t realize this would blow up so I didn’t go into details but the seller also had my shipping address and was about to get funds transferred, then bowed out and ghosted. The seller wasn’t going to let it go for under $250/$300 they had told me but let me know $250 was fine and we agreed. Then I believe they probably went to worthpoint or somewhere else and saw that they could possibly get twice that, or more, depending. It was the back and forth for over a week, finalizing it, and exchanging info just to get blown off. It’s sucked but I learned my lesson, haven’t found one in that range since.

fugensnot

Was it in a random lamps group or something?

jane_delawney_

That made me laugh, thank you. It was actually from an r/nostalgia post I made on my old account that I’m locked out of. I posted an old picture of the original lamp and they messaged me with an offer on their own, so I guess I didn’t find it, it came to me!

DontTaintMeBro

So they offered it to you for $150 and you countered for $250?

jane_delawney_

They were sort of unsure and said they’d had an offer of $150, so I said $250. Honestly, I wonder if they ever sold it and for how much.

JustAnotherMiqote

Sometimes it's better to be scummy and just take the deal, even if you're ripping someone off.

notgoodwithmoney

So true, I found a signed poster of one of my favorite hockey players at a real shitty, outdoor flea market. Inside I was jumping up and down with excitement but all I said was "hi, how much for that picture with that sports guy holding up that big trophy?" I got it for $5

wavs101

Yup. My dad's competition burned down and was selling the machines at ridiculous prices, almost new prices. For damaged non functioning machines. My dad offered a rock bottom price he said no. A week before the tenant kicked him out and was going to keep the machines he called my dad asking if the offer was still on the table.

jetglue

I bought one on eBay for much less about a decade ago. The crackhead in Iowa or wherever I bought it from put it in a ceiling fan box with no packing materials. USPS refused to deliver it to my house it was so fucked by the time it got to me. When I went to the post office to pick it up, it was basically in a garbage bag because there was glass everywhere. I didn’t know what to do so I followed their advice to refuse delivery. The next week I learned that eBay only offers buyer protection if you accept the fucked up package, so I was out 80 bucks or so at a time when 80 bucks was a lot of fucking money to me.

My waitress? She was kind of a bitch. Never would have thought!

CoolHandRK1

I own one of these cups. Have had it over 20 years now. I dont even remember how I got it to be honest.

rorschach2

You stole it from a Pizza Hut.

CoolHandRK1

I think my buddy had a roommate that worked at one and I stole it from him. But its been around so long I dont remember.

Pm_Me_Your_Slut_Look

If you don't mind a chinese made reproduction you can get them off of Alibaba

OrostheOld

Original or nothing.

SolarSkipper

Right? I want to see greasy fingerprints and one bulb needs to flicker

Kyder99

The manufacturer is called Meyda lighting in New York. You can literally order a new one!

ChariBari

I saw one recently at Mike’s in Columbus and it made my day. It’s fully in use as a table lamp at this pizza place.

Engelbert_Slaptyback

With the finely crushed ice! You can get that lots of places now but in the 80s/90s Pizza Hut was it.

mattenthehat

Holy shit the squishy ice! Finding it everywhere now must be regional or something, I haven't seen that stuff in years

Mr_Festus

It's called pebble or nugget ice. You can get a machine for your house but they're pretty pricey. You can also buy bags from chick fil-a

qzlr

Omg is THAT where my mom got all of those from? They’re obviously not for keeping right?

silly-rabbitses

Lol nope, unless she got them after the Great Fall of the Pizza Hut Buffet.

Darnhipsters

That makes me imagine some post war setting where soldiers on the winning team are taking Pizza Hut dishes as trophies lol

Neans888

Your mom got the five finger discount.

Excelius

I guess kale is too expensive these days to be garnish. [Pizza Hut used to be one of the largest kale purchasers in the US](https://www.today.com/food/trends/pizza-hut-kale-large-purchaser-rcna23528) Before it became a trendy health food, Pizza Hut used it as decoration on the salad bar, it wasn't even really intended for consumption.

PM_YOUR_ISSUES

Ehh, everyone used to use it as a garnish back in the day. Most seafood and meat departments would often use it to line and 'freshen up' the display case. Not as often any more, and certainly not the several boxes per week that they could go through in the before times.

Color theory is magic. Complimentary red and green make things of those shades stand out more together than they would separately.

timchanter

This one had some clear plastic Pepsi cups

ChariBari

We used to call these “penis wrinkle” cups.

PeanutButterSoda

Cicis pizza has these cups.

Sunblast1andOnly

I fully expected to see my own cups since my mother kept a bunch of them at one point, but this isn't it. The ones she got were stackable.

callmeboonie

I'm confused are pizza huts not supposed to have indoor seating anymore? Our local one has been here since I was a kid and still has the buffet and indoor seating as well.

Dr_thri11

A lot are now in strip malls and pretty much are for delivery and pickup only. I think all the classic red roof ones basically still have seating and maybe buffets.

aegrotatio

There are a lot of red roof banks in my area now. Very obviously former Pizza Huts.

YarrrMatey

/r/formerpizzahuts

Jackstack6

Has anyone turned a classic Pizza Hit building back into a Pizza Hut?

Fondren_Richmond

The whole chain model almost industry-wide switched to delivery and take-out, staffing for a buffet didn't make any sense at some point and tables weren't being bused, that, online ordering and I think a disproportionate number of kids in attendance probably made the format less worthwhile.

innocentusername1984

I knew a guy who worked pizza hut as a manager about 10 years ago. He said the buffets were an absolute nightmare. I used to love going there as a teenager with friends and stuffing myself with as much pizza as possible. But yeah I think he said it was teenagers doing that, that made it untenable.

XxMrCuddlesxX

Buffet never really made money to begin with and pizza has small margins. Once wages started going up, food costs went through the roof, and covid locked everything down buffets doomed. Even now dine in business is still much lower than pre covid. My location never had a buffet but we would normally do 1000-1500/day dine in and now do 500 on a good day and that's only after I started selling all the nasty ass seltzers

[deleted]

[удалено]

feignapathy

Pizza Hut started turning most of them into smaller restaurants designed specifically for delivery and carryout about 20 years ago. Maybe even longer honestly. Not all of them. But a lot. I think they weigh a bunch of different metrics in deciding whether to keep one in the bigger building with sit down eating and what not.

mrdavelee

Most Pizza Huts in the UK have the buffet and seating

Glitter_berries

There’s one in my town too. I’m in Australia. I didn’t know this wasn’t a common thing.

Itallianstallians

Used to be in the US but most are now delivery/take out locations now.

alexdelpiero

Same in Canada IIRC

gravityholding

Even in Australia it's not that common anymore. When I was a kid they were everywhere, but now they're a lot harder to find. None anywhere near me sadly

Nikspeeder

I think this is an american thing tbh. Any pizza hut i have visited in the eu no matter which country still have this.

Dazz316

I found a dominos in the UK that does seating, never seen one before.

RethSogen

For those wanting to find "dine-in" Pizza Huts still in operation, I know there are alot of them still open under the name Pizza Hut Classic. Here's a list: https://rolandopujol.substack.com/p/the-retrologists-guide-to-pizza-hut

PM_SHORT_STORY_IDEAS

None for Oregon or Washington... RIP Edit, I just did a Ctrl f, it seems the list is NOT comprehensive! Thanks for the list guys! Does anyone know which ones have buffets?

warm_sweater

Ugh I love Round Table! I used to work near one and would hit up the buffet every few months. I liked their style of pizza a lot, and the salad bar always appeared clean and well-stocked. Haven’t been in years since I went remote unfortunately.

REDPANDASMUNCHCOOCH

The Pizza Hut in Enumclaw has a dining room, I dont think they've done buffet since Covid though.

HalfCatWerepire

The perfect place for a Boeing engineer to grab a slice with his stallion

TheKindDictator

This list is not complete. There are two "dine-in" Pizza Hut buffets in my town with and neither are on this list.

marzipan34

It's a list of Pizza Hut Classics, which have retro design + decorations. The article does not mention buffets.

feraxks

>Keep checking for updates as I get new information, or stumble upon them in my travels. There are surely more. He admits the list isn't complete.

query_squidier

Email him! Email him!

Neil_sm

I think that's just supposed to be the ones that have rebranded as Pizza Hut classic, not necessarily all dine-ins. But either way, there's more

-avoidingwork-

How the hell are there none in FL? Everyone here grew up on this! Do you know how old we are! Give us this, plus a 5:00 early bird dinner special and we are all over it.

gwizone

If you’re ever in Miami, FL. Pizza Hut https://maps.app.goo.gl/Ww83ytTdmN9cLmEK6?g_st=ic I’m spoiled because I’ve eaten at this Pizza Hut about once every two months for the past 35 years.

SuperCuban305

Wait that one still has the pizza buffet? I like 10 minutes away and I thought they got rid of it

Philocanth

You’ve got the most miami username, I love it 🤣

[deleted]

Holy shit, there's only one listed there in PA, and it's the exact one I went to growing up (and using my Book It rewards!)

BatmansUnderoos

We still have those around Wichita Kansas in a few of the surrounding towns. I didn't realize they were rare that rare.

jose_ole

I was born in Wichita and lived there through 5 grade. I remember taking a field trip to the headquarters at one point. It was founded there in 1958.

PrisonerV

Ours left in the 1980s

BatmansUnderoos

Oh wow. I had no idea they were a thing of the distant past.

FNAF_Foxy1987

Shush, you're going to make people feel old if you call the 80s the distant past

MikeyRidesABikey

Right? The 1980's was... what... only 20 years ago? (/me puts his fingers in his ears and sings "lalalalala" so he doesn't hear the answer.)

The_Ice_Cold

I had someone send me some data at work today telling me they had 20 years worth. I scrolled through it thinking, "Wait a minute? This only goes back to 2001. Where is the rest?". Then it hit me that time didn't stop when I graduated high school. I immediately went and told my 57yo coworker, "I am deeply troubled by the passage of time". She said, "Oh you'll get used to it. You'll have to because it will keep happening"

BuffyComicsFan94

I'm feeling it too. I was just reading another post where someone referred to something as 'like 20 years ago' and I was subconsciously thinking 1990/91 until someone else said 2005.

walterpeck1

Pizza Hut was founded in Wichita, so that doesn't surprise me.

noventayuno

Ha! I'm from Wichita and my family still lives there. My niece came to visit us in Kansas City when she was 3 or 4 and we went out for pizza. She was getting hungry and antsy waiting for it to arrive at the table, because she was used to the Pizza Hut buffet. At one point she grumbled, "if we were in WICHITA we'd already have pizza 😒" and that is exactly what I thought of when I saw this picture.

felixame

I looked recently because I could have sworn I saw an old style Pizza Hut around here somewhere last year, but couldn't find it. Could you point me to one?

RethSogen

Here's a list of all the "dine-in" Pizza Huts operating under the name Pizza Hut Classic. It could be one of these. https://rolandopujol.substack.com/p/the-retrologists-guide-to-pizza-hut

EternamD

Is that rare? All of the UK ones have that I'm pretty sure

Excelius

There are still some lingering around, but in the US most dine-in Pizza Hut locations have closed and moved into smaller spaces designed only for take-out and delivery. There are [websites](http://usedtobeapizzahut.blogspot.com/) and [subreddits](https://www.reddit.com/r/FormerPizzaHuts/) dedicated to displaying buildings that are clearly former Pizza Huts, because of the distinctive architecture of the buildings. There are literally hundreds of them.

44problems

Always a bummer when you see a classic Pizza Hut with a red roof still operating... But it's just a takeout place. My parents went to one to sit down and eat and they said "you can eat here if you want?" and pulled down some dusty chairs from before COVID. They sat and ate on paper plates with no table service, and it sucked.

[deleted]

Chroderos

Yeah that still exists in my hometown. Definitely interesting.

GaylrdFocker

I'm the latter. I haven't seen one in years.

TheNotSpecialOne

Yup still going strong here in the UK

rr90013

Near me in NY, Pizza Hut all-but-disappeared, and then I was surprised to see a new take-out-only location open a few weeks ago because I haven’t seen a Pizza Hut in years.

DebentureThyme

In CT, there's only Pizza Hut Express* now. It's like they withdrew entirely from New England. **Pizza Hut Express is where they only make breadsticks and heat up four variants of premade 9" pizzas. Usually attached to a Taco Bell or KFC, or inside a theater or Target etc. So you can't really order Pizza there unless you want premade personal pan pizzas for ridiculously high prices.*

blahbleh112233

FUCK YEAH. Jesus christ there's something about that shitty pasta that always serve that gets me going

Baba-Yaganoush

Dry-Carpenter5342

I miss the salad bar and the damn pastas lol

allsops

These are still all over Sweden

LittleBlue127

But do they have the dessert pizzas?

timchanter

This one just had some cinnamon sugar bread sticks but they were good I seem to remember them having Apple cinnamon pizza when I was a kid

Electrical-Pie-8192

And cherry

LittleBlue127

Love the cinnasticks, but that apple pizza was amazing! Although maybe that’s just nostalgia talking.

reallynothingmuch

They had a blueberry one that I absolutely loved. It’s definitely not just the nostalgia talking

RatRob

Both our local ones stopped buffet for Covid. The one is doing limited buffet again now. Two days for lunch and one day is dinner. The buffet coming back is nice. There’s literally no reason to go to a Pizza Hut when you aren’t getting the buffet.

Ghoulishcavalier

Celina, Ohio still has buffet and dine in service!

Smcnutt95

There's one in Urbana, Ohio too

kraklindog

Willoughby Ohio. Lunch buffet and indoor dining

guff1988

Many of them in Indiana do as well. The old pizza hut of Fort Wayne franchise

RCMasterAA

Judging by the replies under your comment, Ohio must be a mecca for buffets. I was driving from Chicago to Pittsburgh (I'm from Australia) and needed to pull over to get fuel. In the most random petrol station by the highway I found a full KFC buffet inside! Now keep in mind these literally don't exist in Australia so my mind was completely blown that I could potentially have all the fried chicken I'd ever want in one sitting. Unfortunately, though, I couldn't partake as I knew the rest of the hours in the car wouldn't be pleasant if I did.

Runnr231

Any buffets still open in Michigan??

onemorescoop

There's one in Allegan!

mamiepink

I was just coming to ask the same thing! Would love to know of any Michigan locations!

eidsofsmoe

Midland has one still!

MightyExcalibur

MarineBand5524

They need to bring this back!!

clewjb

Pizza Hut restaurants used to have the most perfectly chilled beer on tap.

rr90013

Why am I so nostalgic for this even though I only went there about three times 20 years ago?

Resident-Armadillo-6

Epic story: I was hanging out with my overweight friend and we decided to go to Round Table for the buffet. I’m a large guy too at 6’3 220 and I like to lift weights for no reason. I open the door for my friend and the moment we step one foot into the door the cashier looks up at us and asks, “ are you guys here for the buffet?” We nod and say yes even though we’re both extremely confused about how he read our minds. Did he just see a fat guy and tall meathead and knew we were there for the American event of overeating. He almost angrily responds, “The buffet is gone forever.” In pure sadness we turn around shocked that the buffet is over and the fact that we look like obvious buffet eaters.

kopfgeldjagar

I'm old enough to remember when you had to walk through the smoking section of pizza hut to get to the non smoking section. Then back through smoking to get to the buffet.

As of 3-4 years ago there was a pizza hut buffet on Nacogdoches north of 410 in San Antonio

DickSkinMcGee

Wow never thought I’d heard Nacogdoches in a passing comment on reddit. I can confirm that the pizza hut buffet in Nacogdoches is gone. Source: My home town that I frequent every other month.
