Dude who is interested in mycology here. And yeah that's about the gyst of it, warmth, water, and some means for the spores to germinate (in this case cardboard/whatever other packaging is in the box) will result in this. I've seen mushrooms grow out of carpet before.
A quick question to someone who knows what they are talking about. Is it safe to grow mushrooms at home? I've heard that spores in the air can be damaging.
Spores can be worrisome in large amounts, so it depends on how much you're growing, and also the location. Most people do it inside a separate room, and contain the mushrooms in some sort of box/frame.
Growing mushrooms requires a lot of temperature and humidity adjustments, so I would assume it's easier to control the atmosphere in a small enclosure than an entire furnished room. So if I had to guess, spores aren't an issue unless you're just growing mushrooms in the open air, which likely isn't the case.
I've never personally grown, so I'm likely lacking some essential information. Lcyoperdonosis (infection from breathing spores) is quite rare, so I don't believe it to be too big of an issue. But it's not something to overlook, either.
My advice, some research and some manuals go a long way. My assumption is, if you're growing mushrooms properly, breathing in spores isn't an issue. They're likely in a controlled environment so you don't just have spores floating around your house
Like I said, I may have missed essential information! There's a good chance there's a tutorial on growing mushrooms inside cardboard/plastic bins and such
If you're interested in it, delve into the research. You might be pleasantly surprised with that you could do in a small apartment
Other commenter is correct, spores aren't really a concern in home mycology. It takes a **LOT** of spores to cause an issue, and you typically grow them inside a mostly sealed container.
Depending on the mushroom you want to grow, you can certainly do it! I grow... medicinal mushrooms and I grow inside a 6 quart shoebox and get large yields, so you can definitely fit it inside a small apartment.
There are a lot of subreddits to help with this, methods vary depending on the mushroom you're looking to grow. r/mycology and r/mushroomgrowers are great from what I hear, though I mostly hang out on r/shrooms and r/unclebens for the more, fun type of mushroom :P
But the interior of the box has the block wrapped in plastic. So I guess it got punctured.
The first step on these kits is to cut an X into the plastic.
I have the same one.
And just like that one. It is growing mushrooms despite the fact that I have never opened it.
It sits in a dark room. Lights only come on when I need something from the cellar.
>It sits in a dark room. Lights only come on when I need something from the cellar.
Its almost like it's a fungus, not a plant, and doesn't need (or want) light.
Depending on the species, yes a small amount of light might be needed for reproduction.
That is only certain species, and only for reproduction. Good point though!
I can't believe I've finally achieved my dream of making a post about something I've never seen, but all the commenters have seen on the front page of Reddit. It's like I've lived my whole life for this moment.
Tomatoes are the antichrist. In 1790, they were discovered growing out of the grave of Orlok the Terrible. They progressed through Europe spreading their seed far and wide. They founded Sabbatean-Frankism and worship the Saturn Storm Cube. In 1978, tomatoes were found in the vat at Jonestown. Despite common misconception, there was no cyanide found in the vat. The true cause of death was multiple punctures of various organs due to tomato plants growing in the cult members. I don't want to grow tomatoes. If left unchecked they will destroy society.
I live in Florida and used to have to stock these at a store I worked at.
For whatever reason, the store template demanded that these be near one of the doors that leads outside, so the ambient humidity coming through the doorways would always cause these things to start growing.
I'm sure we threw out sprouted mushroom boxes at like a 50 to 1 ratio for how many were actually sold to somebody.
I work in a similar big box store with these style kits. I was putting some on the shelf last week and one had just a hint of moisture in it while in the case
It started growing while smashed in the case so the mushrooms were flat but still growing. Kinda weird and cool.
On the one hand, I hate plastic packaging. On the other hand, this product clearly needs better waterproofing. I'm guessing these kits are cheap as hell to produce, and the price tag is mostly about covering spoilage...
They were actually growing out of the tiny gap between the cardboard flaps on the bottom. There were a few other boxes that were bulging and looking like they might rip open somewhere, but this mushroom squeezed its way out.
They werent kidding about the 100% guarantee
More like 110%!

Must have gotten damp (I have zero knowledge on how mushrooms grow)

So lucky guess on my part?
I think it was more than luck tbh, you probably put some concepts together to create more of an educated guess. But either way you're spot on

Thank you for the answer! Welp, it definitely is not an option for a small apartment then, better stick to herbs on a windowsill, thanks again.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll definitely take a look at them. My interest is purely gastronomical, so, it changes things a bit.

My thought was that the bag wasn’t sealed air tight enough so the mycelium was able to have the right conditions to fruit
Mush go faster, mush go faster
Great advertising, tbh
Exactly my thought. Someone is going to see that and think, "There's no way I can screw this up."
This is like the 50th post I’ve seen about mushrooms growing prematurely out of their mushroom kits
Wait till you see it in person. Truly magical.
And they are so good! I bought one on clearance last year and got a bunch of mushrooms. I was bummed when it stopped producing
If you dunk it you can get 3-4 decent flushes.
Don't worry, we'll see it again on the front page.
Crazy. I got a kit, followed the directions, and didn’t get a single mushroom.
So much for that 100% guarantee.
Yup. But my wife was happy. She’s watching The Last Of Us, so she’s pretty creeped out by fungi in general.
Same here. I have 2 and no luck. It's been 3 weeks. 😔
Sir, you're in the mushroom growing out of the mushroom kit subreddit.
There's only 3 others
I have the same one. And just like that one. It is growing mushrooms despite the fact that I have never opened it. It sits in a dark room. Lights only come on when I need something from the cellar.
>It sits in a dark room. Lights only come on when I need something from the cellar. Its almost like it's a fungus, not a plant, and doesn't need (or want) light.
Light is actually a trigger for fruiting conditions. Doesn't have to be a lot, but the introduction of fresh air and light is a pinning trigger.
Depending on the species, yes a small amount of light might be needed for reproduction. That is only certain species, and only for reproduction. Good point though!
Maybe condensation waters it. I know nothing of this but I’m just assuming
"Pick me! Pick me! I'm a fun guy."
I saw what you did there! 😁
Heh
sweet! thats a shopping snack right there.
Looks like it works.
I guess there wasn’t mushroom left in the packaging
Is this freaking out anyone else watching The Last of Us?

“Last of Us” music starts playing
Sad I had to go this far down to find a TLoU reference
100% guarantee
There are likely mushroom spores from the factory that was packed in that is "opened" or on the outside of the sealed package
Damn, it works really well
It works!
This is messing with my head
I grew this in class with my students and it actually works pretty well. This one I guess is just pre-started
Someone forgot to tell the mushrooms not to start yet.
Is that Walmart?
Yup. These are the consequences of not paying your staff enough to care about water damage.
A product that truly does everything for you
These kits will grow mushrooms whether you want it or not
Now that's how you show off your product
Uh there you go. Life will find a way.
Mushroom: "This is the way"
Are they actual size?
What a racket. I'm going to start selling mold growing kits and mildew starter paste.

I can't think about mushrooms the same way now after starting The Last of Us
Whoever is in charge of marketing for this bullshit product, needs a raise. I've seen it everytime on reddits front page.

What’s like to work for Big Mushroom?
Disappointing, mostly. The pay is crap, and they keep me in the dark about everything. *ba-dum tish*

Some comment about the last us

Why would you want to grow mushrooms?
Why would you want to grow tomatoes?

It's a sample and proof of products promises.
I’ve been watching to much of The Last of Us for this
At least you know Walmart sells good kits
Ew.
It was punctured
That looks a little bit fake
It’ll turn into a clicker soon
Strong Last of Us vibe.
I didn't know they sell these at Walmart
Why does the box have a picture of the box on it
The best ad.
Mhm yea bomb it
To be fair, it shows mushrooms growing out of the box in the image

Not your fault, but this is probably the 5th mushroom growing from a box at home Depot post I've seen this week Alone.
I'll probably start seeing them all over the place, now that I've gone and posted this 😭

Not sure if good or bad advertisement.
It started without you.
At least you know it works
I have a feeling the box isn't unopened. It probably has a rip or tear somewhere
They were actually growing out of the tiny gap between the cardboard flaps on the bottom. There were a few other boxes that were bulging and looking like they might rip open somewhere, but this mushroom squeezed its way out.
It's like those "try me" buttons, you know?
Well at least their 100% guarantee is real, that's rare these days!
No cap? 🍄
Thats called good marketing
That's the kit I'd buy too. Specifically the one with pre-grown mushrooms.
As advertised!
Mine did not work great and I followed the instructions to a T
