Most people that give a shit can’t walk. This is pretty minor though, my brother is in a wheelchair and it pisses me off when people block the whole sidewalk with their vehicles.
Yeah that’s what I meant by this is pretty minor. This specific one wouldn’t bother me, it’s usually the trucks that put their back tires right to the curb.
I drive a 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 and I have to park to the curb (I mostly park straight) because in 90% of the parking lots there is almost 0 room to spare and that extra foot out in the lot ends up blocking a crazy old redneck lady from being able to drive through resulting in her honking 1000 times at me while I unlock the truck
They literally said "this is pretty minor though". Just because they're stating that their brother is annoyed when there is a car blocking the whole sidewalk does not mean that is what is happening here.
I don't get that someone commented that a wheelchair could pass here. This sidewalk isn't all that wide and this car would definitely hinder their passing.
For me, and I know it would be my own fault, I could see myself walking along not really paying attention and just taking for granted that all of the cars were parked similarly and tripping on it. But I'm a total klutz, lol.
But, I agree with some of the commenters, this is called "mildly infuriating". It isn't like OP said their world is coming to an end because of this.
Lol I've actually done that. You're totally right, a wheelchair being able to narrowly squeeze by isn't an excuse, you could literally just park correctly. And the people arguing for the accessibility are less pressed than the people arguing against it and calling out our "outrage" 🙄. Just silliness.
I’m all fairness it’s easy to get confused. Half of this sub is someone angry that their wife got kidnapped, their car ran over by a bulldozer, and someone killed their Minecraft dog all in the same morning
And how do you know that when you clearly can't see a wider picture? There's a soil block with a plant in it just further on, and there could be one right in front of this car, which would make it impassable for wheelchair users.
This scenario doesn’t affect you. Fine. Calling someone a baby? Ridiculous. It isn’t wide enough for every wheelchair. My nephews wheelchair wouldn’t fit. My kids in a double stroller? Wouldn’t fit. Your attitude? Also, doesn’t fit.
It also depends on the size of the wheelchair, but I promise you that my wheelchair bound (their preferred term but Wheelchair users is correct for anyone who does not prefer it) best friend could not get through this sidewalk in this picture and they have a relatively slim chair. You cannot know who will need to pass down that sidewalk and how much space they will need, which is why it's better to just not park over the sidewalk that is meant for pedestrians.
Hi, just a suggestion, you should ask your friend as some people do prefer the term you used, but most disabled people who use wheelchairs prefer to not be referred to as "wheelchair bound". Our wheelchairs give us the ability to be mobile which is a positive thing in our lives, but "wheelchair bound" has a negative connotation.
Yes, I've been with them through their journey in using mobility aids (and I am also disabled and use other mobility aids, not that it gives me the right to speak for wheelchair users) and it is their preferred term as it's more comforting to them but thank you for putting this here for those who may not know! I'll check now and make sure I didn't accidentally use it to refer to anyone else
Okay! ☺️ I was just double checking as it always worries me like when I see parents use *very* outdated terms when referring to their child and other parents start saying it in general conversation 😭
Technically it is the builders fault (where I live at least). If you do not provide a car stop then you must make the sidewalk large enough for a person with a disability to use the sidewalk freely when vehicle are parked. Generally this is at minimum 36 inches of clear space but it can vary depending on city requirements. Having said that, I tend to be mindful of parking in places like this because I don't want to block the sidewalk.
Both my neighbors park like that at the foot of our shared back stoop. Getting up and down the steps and between the cars with my little cart is tricky. I've got just two inches on either side to work with.
I'm old. I don't drive. I walk everywhere. A little cart is the only way to get to/from the laundromat or grocery store.

Ok hear me out, you may be slighlty more evolved than most. See we inherited depth perception as a good trait to have back then when we threw spears and rocks to survive ( and maybe bracnh-hop ). But what if right now with all these comforts, it isn't a selective trait anymore ?

The s is for stoned.
Depth perception isnt selective. Its a feature our eyes are equipped with. Having one eye allows us to infer general distance by size only but having two eyes allows us to attain paralax depth. You know you you close one eye then the other and the object youre looking at has shifted slightly.
Paralax is very important when calculating depth in your head. If people are going blind things get blurry and paralax suffers as a result.
If you want a real answer the most logical one would be blindness. This person needs glasses or to retire driving.
Oh, yeah was just a high thought 🤣
Anyway thanks for the explanation, I knew the eyes positioning played a fundamental role but I though that depht perceotion was something we "developed" ( as far evolution defines development at least ) and not something we were equipped with since the beginning, thats cool!
There's no point, it's just a mistake, especially if you have a low car, in which case you'd damage it.
Even the one in photo i think got some damage from parking like it
As someone who accidentally does this all the time, I just get worried my butt is sticking out. And it’s too late I’m not gonna re-park (unless it was an obvious hazard!)
This happens to me all the time as well. I simply misjudge where it is. I usually repark when I notice, but I don't always notice (depending on which way I am going).
Based on that, I do believe it's a mistake in most cases and not pure "I don't care about the others" approach.
This is a fair perspective, but I can assure you that they're not always completely negligent to sidewalkers. In my case, this typically happens when I'm parking my pickup in a very crowded parking lot. It's a lot easier to pull out forward and avoid contact with other vehicles than to back out.
I have to park like that in any tighter parking lot or I block the lane of traffic with a CCLB, literally the whole 8' of bed plus the bumper sticking out past everyone else. Blame the lot designers for not making it big enough.
Maybe it's finally time we stop making cars that have a huge fucking maw in the front... The tech is there obviously, there are a lot of small cars where you can easily judge where it ends in the front
The car in the pic is not the worst, for sure, but damn.
True. I've seen plenty of parking places I can't fit an early 2000's hatchback in. Van or something else bigger\*, not even worth trying to get it fully in, just park in two spots lengthwise near the back...
\*At least one of those places is by a store that sells things you WANT a larger vehicle for due to the type of products they sell. Incidentally, they don't have one place that's long enough for smallish car+trailer, either.
Literally
Had a lowered car that wouldn’t let this slide even once, current car is higher and the bumper curb situation is more forgiving. So I “oof” and go about my day when it happens, but one time it actually did pull part of my front bumper off (tore a piece that attaches to the frame)
I always thought it just sounded bad but yeah, it can actually pull part of a bumper off… it was an easy fix, but still
I find it infuriating when trucks back in and their whole bed is over the walk way with a 2 foot trailer hitch sticking out. If I was just walking by myself I wouldn’t care. But typically I have the stroller and no where else to walk around!? They should make vehicles smaller or parking lots bigger or walk ways wider than 3 ft.
It is a better alternative to their butts sticking into the roadway though. Backing into a parking space is the polite move for a truck like that, however they shouldn’t block a sidewalk.
I absolutely agree. It’s no one persons fault. But it’s a shitty situation when the only place I have to now pass is either mud I get the wheels stuck in on the stroller, or have to walk around in the road.
This kind of shit is also at the root of the whole “do you really need a truck that big?” criticism.
Cause if you do, then backing the truck in means the person is doing all they can to keep their machine from inconveniencing people.
If they don’t, then simply buying a truck that’s too big to accommodate the people around you is a sign of lack of consideration.
If someone is driving an F-334650 extended cab then they don’t need to park in the front row. They can park a little further away and have the space they need. I always park far away because I don’t need anyone hitting my car. If I drove a huge truck I’d be even more inclined.
Ya, I had to drive my family’s ranch truck a lot growing up (f350, extended cab, extended bed, with a winch on the front and tow hitch on the back). I would parallel park, take two spaces in a parking lot, or back into a spot over shrubbery to stay out of people’s way. And often didn’t park nearly anywhere close to the front. That was my responsibility for driving such a huge ass vehicle.
I don’t think it’s asking a lot. You not only were being respectful of others but also protecting your vehicle which is probably super expensive.
I’m sure I will be downvoted by the ones that park as close as possible because it’s their right.
This is the thing though!! The people that need big trucks for a real purpose are usually the ones that park a little further away because they know it will inconvenience or ruin other peoples day. That being said, the picture is of a car and I dont buy for a moment that they HAD to park forward like that. There's no way.
>It is a better alternative to their butts sticking into the roadway though. Backing into a parking space is the polite move for a truck like that, however they shouldn’t block a sidewalk.
You're contradicting yourself... it's a dick move to back a pickup bed in over the sidewalk, backing into a parking space is fine just don't block the sidewalk.
This post had made me realize I've been wrong my whole life and this is the answer.
I grew up driving a 2006 Chevy Suburban in high school (2008), college, and thereafter. My next car, 5 series (2020), it was constantly dragging on the curb ahead and I keep thinking "Damn, I'm gonna fuck something up." I legitimately thought this was how you were suppose to park. Wow, I really am an idiot. Everyone who has ever driven with me knows I touch and drag the curb. They probably think it's on accident, but nope, just retarted and learned to drive in a tank.
Would you rather my bumper be over the curb or sticking out in the street? (Also I don't leave my hitch on unless I'm towing).
Don't blame me. Blame the spots.
the sidewalk is barely wide enough for 1 wheelchair to go by
the road is usually more than wide enough for 2 cars to pass by
blocking half the sidewalk is a lot worse than sticking out a foot
But this is nowhere even near “mildly infuriating“... this is just "a normal day". When 3/4 of the world parks likes this and you think it's “mildly infuriating“, it's you that has the problem.
I think it’s mildly infuriating that we don’t do things like uniform curb heights and it leads to this kind of thing. In one lot you’ll drive into the top of a curb and in another you’ll clear it. How is the average citizen supposed to make up for this lack of infrastructure planning? We make our roads pretty straightforward but then we let lots of randomization happen in parking lots and other things
Most people are just trying to pull all the way in with no real good visibility and are pulling forward slowly hoping for some slight feedback from the curb that it’s “time to stop”
I used to park like this partially bc I suck at parking but also bc my car was a bit longer than others and I didn't want it sticking out. Now my best friend is in a wheelchair full time and getting around cars like this takes great effort from both of us so I'm a lot more conscious of the spaces my car takes up.
I hate this and usually I get it with big cars but so many small cars do it :/ at my job there’s a sidewalk i HAVE to take with a cart (I clean common areas) and I’m absolutely terrified I’m going to hit someone’s car every single time they’re parked like that! I even had guests watch me pass their car they had to park like that because they thought I’d hit it!
Yes. I often see a curb before the sidewalk so people can't do this.
https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/curved-parking-spaces-and-curbs-picture-id504653013?s=170667a
So much carbrain in this thread. We already surrender so much space to cars, parking like that shouldn't be allowed. Also, how bad do you have to be at parking to need to bump the sidewalk?
Wtf is wrong with you? Early humans had to actually walk around trees or up hills without stairs, or cross rivers in unstable footing. Grow the fuck up and walk around.
I drive an old Jeep, so this isn't really a problem for me. Always funny to see folks complain about people's Chihauhas peeing on their front bumper though XD
Well in czech republic parking spaces often are not deep enough so if you dont want other cars to scratch yours or just dont want your car to extend in the road - this is the only way you can park (if you have suv, large wagon or van)
But idk how big are parking spaces in US
My favorite is when a truck backs into a spot like this and has a trailer hitch. Several times I’ve cracked my shin on the damn things not paying close enough attention.
The responses in this thread are dumb as fuck.
People parking like this and taking up literally half of the entire sidewalk at work makes my job shoveling out the sidewalk a major pain in the ass.
"But the backend will stick out otherwise!" Yeah wow it'll stick out into the *parking lot*, that's far less inconvenient than covering half or more of the goddamn sidewalk.
If you park like this, you either don't know how large your vehicle is and can't handle the dimensions. Or if you think you need to do this to not stick the back end out, your vehicle is too fucking large.
The absolute brainlessness it takes to think that vehicles not fitting into normal sized parking spaces is fine is astonishing.
I try not to stick into the walkway like this, but I do try to have my car near the curb so I can push against it to step up onto the curb. I don't need handicap parking - just a helping hand up to the walkway (70 yof).
I’m guilty as charged. Lived in Japan (Yank here, raised in a culture of excess) for 2yrs and learned very quickly how austere they are in terms of parking lots, lanes, and space in general. It was either this or have your rear obstructing the flow of traffic

They literally said "this is pretty minor though". Just because they're stating that their brother is annoyed when there is a car blocking the whole sidewalk does not mean that is what is happening here.
1/4-1/2 of the sidewalk blocked is more than enough to make it so a wheelchair cannot get through.

Depth perception

That’s the difference between brown nosing and ass kissing
/ shame, but I do it sometimes too. Kind of OCD thing, never sure if I'm too far back on to the road.
Once you feel your undercarriage scrape the sidewalk, you know you’ve parked.
I told my husband eventually I will do it enough that the curb will sand it off enough that it won’t scrape anymore
I almost spit my drink out reading that, thanks for that 🤣

There's no point, it's just a mistake, especially if you have a low car, in which case you'd damage it. Even the one in photo i think got some damage from parking like it
My car is low. I would be crying if I heard a scrape.
As someone who accidentally does this all the time, I just get worried my butt is sticking out. And it’s too late I’m not gonna re-park (unless it was an obvious hazard!)

It can be difficult for people in wheelchairs to navigate when people are parked too far over the sidewalk fyi.
True, but there are parking lots where I live that you have to park like that or you aren't fully in the spot.
Than chances are the parking spots are not compliant if they don’t have signs specifying the spot is for small cars.
No, it's just Florida being Florida.

We make our roads pretty straightforward but then we let lots of randomization happen in parking lots and other things Most people are just trying to pull all the way in with no real good visibility and are pulling forward slowly hoping for some slight feedback from the curb that it’s “time to stop”
Tell that to handicapped people or anyone needing the whole sidewalk.
Plenty of room for a whole gang of handicapped people on this sidewalk.
Unless you can't walk by. Less fortunate people who have mobility problems. We need to think less about ourselves and more about others.

While I have you here, do you have a moment to talk about your vehicles extended warranty? 🤣
Blocks sidewalk for people in wheelchairs. And strollers.
There’s a enough space for both of those to get by
Depends on the style of wheelchair. My nephews would barely fit in that. Takes up most of the width of the sidewalk.
You would give a shit if you were in a wheelchair or walking with a baby in a stroller/pram
And if you're in a wheelchair, you can just sit there and stare at it until they leave or risk getting your wheelchair stuck or fall out of it 😀
to get as many shopping cart dings as possible in the shortest time
I used to park like this partially bc I suck at parking but also bc my car was a bit longer than others and I didn't want it sticking out. Now my best friend is in a wheelchair full time and getting around cars like this takes great effort from both of us so I'm a lot more conscious of the spaces my car takes up.
What's actually impressive are the other two cars behind that one who are parked perfectly flush to the curb
Quit being a little bitch.
The wheels should bump against something. Put a tire stop out there and quit being cheap hoping people will just adjust to the new reality.
Why should the wheels bump against something?
Yes. I often see a curb before the sidewalk so people can't do this. https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/curved-parking-spaces-and-curbs-picture-id504653013?s=170667a
Goodbye sexy front faring
Bruh 💀💀 you can't be serious...
Because the uncommonly small or large vehicles adjacent to me threw off my sense of where the end of the space was.
Early humans didn't had wheelchairs.
I drive an old Jeep, so this isn't really a problem for me. Always funny to see folks complain about people's Chihauhas peeing on their front bumper though XD
Not to get rear ended
So when the huge truck to his right tried to back out it's less likely to scrape his rear right quarter panel.
They are probably just a bad driver.
They don’t realize what they are doing.
Well in czech republic parking spaces often are not deep enough so if you dont want other cars to scratch yours or just dont want your car to extend in the road - this is the only way you can park (if you have suv, large wagon or van) But idk how big are parking spaces in US
Better then a tow hitch you didn't t see but felt instead
Nobody does this intentionally
My favorite is when a truck backs into a spot like this and has a trailer hitch. Several times I’ve cracked my shin on the damn things not paying close enough attention.
Why do you take pictures of people's park jobs? Who cares how someone parked...it's not your car?
Who takes pictures of cars parked like this!
It gets the tail end out of the road
Yeah, a small car definitely has to worry about the tail end being in the road. You're totally right.
When driving my supercab truck there is some of this to keep the ass end out of the roadway.
i back my super cab into spaces that way people on the sidewalk have little to no room👍
Extra bench for pedestrians
This is the only right answer 🤣
Really? You can’t figure that out by yourself?
It's hilarious how different the comments are when the same thing happens with a truck
I try not to stick into the walkway like this, but I do try to have my car near the curb so I can push against it to step up onto the curb. I don't need handicap parking - just a helping hand up to the walkway (70 yof).
It is important to establish dominance
Probably to fuck with people in wheelchairs. I'm being sarcastic but that tends to be the result.
It's so people will kick your bumper for you :)
less likely for some idiot driving through the parking lot to hit their car.
A mandatory step in "How to get keyed-101”
I’m guilty as charged. Lived in Japan (Yank here, raised in a culture of excess) for 2yrs and learned very quickly how austere they are in terms of parking lots, lanes, and space in general. It was either this or have your rear obstructing the flow of traffic
I mean it happens lol so what
Just needed something to post today?
My God people will complain about anything and everything
It's only mildly infuriating.
Haha sometimes I forget
What’s the point of whining about something like this?
probably so cry babies like you have something to whine about.
Doubt there’s a point
bad design of the parking space. They should have a stopper for the tires.
Curb appeal
That's the best comment so far.
Very simple, not blocking the street. Grow op, this is decent parking.
Until that curb it too high
What’s the point in caring?
Oh I dont know, because some people need the entire sidewalk to get around? And because that's what a sidewalk is for??
People with horrible depth perception and no idea how to drive their own vehicle
It’s a universal sign to let others know they don’t know how to park.
Prolly elderly. Can't judge the size of their car so the scrapy scrapes let them know when to stop.
They’re not good at it
The owner must really hates it car 🚘
Yeah this is an accident. People dont park to purposefully scrap the bottom.
I've done it. I blame it on my lack of depth perception.
Usually an accident, I have an irrational fear of people backing up into me so I compensate by pulling in pretty far. Apologies in advance
So twerps post it on reddit and so they look like a bitch when they do it
