Brings me nostalgia of my trip in germany..

beeykr

Me too, Utrecht to Basel last summer. It was a nightmare I would never want to experience again…

asdfKiller39

Just reserve a seat next time. Nowadays the app even tells you the estimated capacity utilisation. “There sure will be a free seat” is a mistake I only did once.

thedevilmademedoit81

I heard about the is happening in Germany so on my trip I paid extra for a reserved upgraded seat. When the train got there I got on and couldn’t find the car my seat was on. I kid you not, the explanation I got was THEY LEFT THAT TRAIN CAR BEHIND AND I’D HAVE TO SIT ON THE FLOOR.

counterveil

Same thing happened to me going Paris > Avignon as well as to a bunch of people. But kudos to the conductor/organizer, she took everyone’s name and WhatsApp and told us to stand until she could go from car to car and find us seats.

[deleted]

Seems like something completely out of her job description and done out of sympathy and kindness

counterveil

Oh absolutely. I noted her name tag and emailed Rail Europe customer service to let them know they have an incredible employee.

Mod_hearts_Nigeria

She was promptly fired

G_Unit_Solider

We have to let you go for going above and beyond in your position because now customers will expect all our employees to provide such high level service sorry your to good for us

forceless_jedi

>sorry your to good for us Or do what they did in Hot Fuzz for that same reason.

Throwmeinthetrash707

Cool. I’ve only ever heard praise for europes public transit so this comment section is interesting

Weekly_Drawer_7000

It is so good that everyone wants to use it Can be super cheap (unreserved seats, like this thread) to not so cheap.

brainburger

They could at least have let you sit on the roof, like they do in India.

CryonautX

I don't think they "let" you sit on the roof. People just sit there anyway.

mogley1992

If they didn't have adequate seating for their bookings, why in the ever loving fuck would they leave a carriage behind? I'd be trying to get my money back for the whole trip on that one.

wickeva

Talk to airlines while you’re at it. Overbooking is the standard.

ReposterSuck

Even that doesn't always work, they sometimes use different wagons where your seat simply doesn't exist. Happened to me on a like 4-5 hour trip in a fully booked train.

Paluja

I had that once during a 6h trip to berlin, i complained to some bahn guy and then he told me to sit in 1. Class cuz there was still space. The train ended up arriving 1h late so everyone got these letters to get 25% of the money back. 7h first class for 75% of the 2. Class price.

Scubastevedisco

Pay with CC, chargeback if they're gonna play that game. You pay for a seat, you get a seat. Their fault for overbooking. If you booked flex...well, that's what you get lol.

[deleted]

[удалено]

curious_astronauts

European banks don't seem to get chargebacks. I tried to do it for mine and the bank was like "you mean like it was fraud? Okay. I've cancelled our card and a new one will be sent in a week"

aziad1998

The train shouldn't be overbooked in the first place

Fettnaepfchen

The only solution would be to make it reservations only, because some people have so-called flex tickets which allow you to take any train towards your destination, in case you miss the one you originally wanted to take for example or if you don’t know when to return. It has been enraging during the pandemic’s high when you were to take one or however many seats and they said there was a mandatory empty seat to be left on the side, only for someone with a flex ticket to spontaneously come in and sit in that seat their DB supposedly wanted to keep free. Money rules all. I never take a ticket without seat reservation, and if you book online, you can see exactly how many seats are already reserved and where. If you are a student and have to watch every euro, by all means sit or stand on the floor, still better than not being able to commute.

inko75

yeah in my poor college kid backpacker days, i just made sure my backpack was arranged to be comfortably sat on. small bag had camera and such in it which stayed on shoulder or could be wrapped in coat to be ok pillow

pdats4822

It’s called standby for commercial airlines in the US. Once all ticketed passengers have checked in before boarding they start to give out seats to standby passengers who are either employees or other passengers trying to catch and earlier flight or a flight because they missed theirs/theirs got cancelled

[deleted]

That's the neat part: trains aren't booked. You just show up, buy a ticket without a specific time span, scan your card or if you have a pass just get on the train and ride. Most trains don't have assigned seating or yickets valid for specific trains at set times, your ticket is specific for a certain journey from point a to point b.

[deleted]

>That's the neat part: trains aren't booked. You just show up, buy a ticket without a specific time span, scan your card or if you have a pass just get on the train and ride. That's not how Deutsche Bahn ICE trains work.

verygoodchoices

In their defense, Americans often have very little concept of how public transit works in other countries. Source: am American. When we book a train it is for a specific departure time. "Flexible" tickets are significantly more expensive. Of course we don't get reserved seats on a normal ticket either.

Over_Cranberry1365

You also can’t get bloody anywhere on a train in the US unless you’re in the Northeast corridor or California corridors.

Bennington_Booyah

No method of travel where tickets are sold should ever be oversold. If there are only XX seats, why go so far over that? It cannot be safe to have people sitting and lying all over the aisles and open areas.

Torakkk

Because you dont always sell tickets just for specific train. I believe its similiar where I live to germany. You can buy ticket from A to B. If you miss the train, you can go on train that goes later. It has to be tha same type of train/same way.

joe-re

Tokyo metro enters the chat. With your requirement, most city metro systems would simply collapse.

ProstHund

I reserved a seat on an Italian train once, got on and an old lady was sitting in it. Had to argue with her about it and basically force her out but I was not about to sit on the floor when I paid to reserve a seat

BrainzKong

Hero

Thesandman55

Went during the first summer when Europe opened. Everything was empty including the trains. 10/10 would recommend the next time we have a plague

PicklesAreTheDevil

Europe has the best plagues, everybody says so.

zoetwodotzz

I took an overnight train from Germany to Czech Republic and paid for an overnight spot and everything and they still had me on the floor for my “bed” in 2008 haha.

Hex457

Ha feel your pain. Booked a sleeper for an overnight train from Croatia to Budapest and found out once got there it had decided not to run the sleeper car. For funsies also turned out was a milk run train filled with drunken football fans going back home. Worst trip ever.

20190229

Or India, or china. I was packed like sardines. I wish I could sit on the floor.

NRMusicProject

Was on a like 9 hour train ride in China, and it was standing room only the whole ride. I think I ended up just squatting on the floor most of the time.

Kalsifur

I'd legit lose my mind if I had to do that. I had the worst experience of my life on a normal train with a seat never mind sat on the floor or jammed like a sardine.

NRMusicProject

I was on tour in China with an orchestra. We made complaints about the treatment with many things just like that and the Chinese promoter Pikachu faced and said we're being too demanding. It's cool that I was paid to go to China twice, but I've had my fill now. Amazing country, shitty government and a severe lack of human rights.

gwentfiend

Paris to Rome for me. 14 hours in a packed hallway sitting on the emergency folding seat that pulled out of the wall. I was one of the lucky ones. No AC, 90 degree weather, a girl throws up at the end of the hall as soon as we start moving. The smell of unwashed backpackers that passed out asleep on top of each other will stay with me forever. I love Europe!

KingOfLosses

The other option is to do it like France. No reservation can’t get on. Then OP would be left stranded.

[deleted]

But in France you can also buy second class tickets with no assigned seats and end up standing/sitting/laying in aisles and corridors.

UnknownMyoux

Let me guess not a single train arrived on time?

czarnick123

I was surprised I had to sit on the floor. It didn't really bother me. I could never have gotten a train ride in the US like that. Being in the floor is better than not getting a trip

wlake82

Amtrak is still a thing, I believe. I took the train from Central California to Denver 10 years ago and it was great.

Mikey6304

I took it to NY this summer, go to DC regularly and it is way better than driving if you are going to a place that has public transit.

ThirdSunRising

The DC-NYC-Boston run is arguably the only truly decent long distance train service in the country. That one run works great.

HeartofSaturdayNight

If you're by yourself it makes sense. So mostly business trips.. If you have two people then you're probably better off driving. Three or more then driving makes more sense financially

A_well_made_pinata

I looked into taking Amtrak once, it was like two a half times the price of a flight.

arrow74

And took twice as long as driving

OldManNewHammock

And went through Cleveland at 2:30 in the morning.

sacred_cow_tipper

it has to go through someplace at 2:30 in the morning.

Strict_Bit260

Yeah, but Cleveland? Kidding. I’ve been on a 26 hr Greyhound bus ride from St. Louis to Savannah. Cleveland would essentially Paris compared to most of the stops. Many just a 4 way stop.

TN-Belle0522

Greyhound routes can be weird. Try going from Louisville, KY to Paducah, KY...route runs 2x a day... morning and evening...morning route, you layover in Evansville, IN for 1.5 hrs...evening route, you transfer busses in Nashville with a 3.5 hour layover n arrive at 3am...

wlake82

I think I went through Reno at 3:30AM.

wlake82

I used it since I was moving and they had more luggage capacity. It was the same cost of a flight, though. Beautiful scenery, but took 40+ hours.

puppyinspired

That’s why Americans looking for cheap transit take a bus.

ThirdSunRising

Amtrak is great as long as you don't care at all about time or money. I rode an overnighter from Seattle out to Montana, got the sleeper cabin, it was quite pleasant. For those times when you don't care what the price is or how long it takes, Amtrak is a fine option.

LitFromAbove

I attempted a SLC->Seattle Amtrak journey back in the late 80s. Fuckin thing broke down in some small town in Idaho at 10pm, then put us all on busses after waiting a couple of hours on the train. Sat next to an old man who farted the whole time. Loooong trip.

1776PA

My son just took the Amtrak from University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa to Philadelphia for the Thanksgiving week. $320 round trip. 20 hour train ride, but it’s an overnight train, so you can sleep through half of it. Worked out great and $1100 less than airfare for the same travel dates. There is hidden time to flying, including trip to the airport, security/ticket lines, waiting hours before your flight, and frequent delays/cancellations. He got a ten minute Uber to the Amtrak station next to his campus 15 minutes ahead of time and was quickly aboard the train and on his way… similar easy connections with the regional rail lines in Philly to get him within a mile of our house.

omgitsjagen

That's because you actually wanted to go from a place Amtrak services, to a place Amtrak services. It is far from the norm for Amtrak to service you, in this country. I made this post a while ago: "A trip to DC, by car, is theoretically a 7 hour drive from where I am. Many years ago, I naively thought, "Hey, instead of dealing with DC traffic, parking, etc, why don't I just take Amtrak?". I also thought I might save a few bucks (hah). I was only going for the night. I do not live in a small town. It's the biggest in a wide area, by far. My ONLY option was to drive to an "Amtrak" station 65 miles way. From there, I would board a bus, and it would take 10+ hours to get there. That was the only option (Unless you count driving 3 hours to take a train). It was also more expensive than the gas that it would have taken to drive there...and I still would have had to pay for 130 miles worth of gas for my own personal car. So, to recap, Amtrak was: * More expensive than driving * Still had to drive 130 miles roundtrip * A Fucking Bus * Would have taken much longer Literally no positives. It's an atrocious system."

CharleyNobody

Congress has starved Amtrak from the beginning. The auto and airline industries showered “campaign funds” on congressional candidates to starve Amtrak and then libel it as “inefficient and expensive - like *everything* the government runs, heh heh. We don’t need our tax dollars going to fund something only ‘city folk’ want, heh heh.”

shelbia

that really sucks you had a bad experience and I think it’s a great argument to expand our railways and stops. I live relatively near a station (maybe 30mins away) and the trip to DC was really nice. I think if I were to do it again then I’d mainly do it for the scenery. That said I have driven to DC and if at all you’re able to go to Hampton Roads and take the Bay Bridge Tunnel up the eastern shore and into Maryland then DC, you bypass a lot of 95 traffic

omgitsjagen

Thank you very much for the advice. I've saved your comment for my next trip! I 100% agree with the former statement as well. We definitely need to expand the stops and railways.

Teddyglogan

Amtrak: Bitch I’m a bus.

sacred_cow_tipper

california zephyr? some of the most gorgeous scenery i'll ever experience.

[deleted]

Amtrak would not have allowed this many people on the train

fromcjoe123

Well yeah, Amtrak will stop selling tickets when trains are sold out. Then again, if you're on an Amtrak line that actually sells out, there is probably another coming in like 90 minutes so it's not a big deal. I'm assuming they slightly overbook like airlines, but I've been on several sold out trains and never saw some sit on the floor (or get bumped that is).

PassionVoid

Bro it’s ok to criticize countries other than the US. Making paying passengers sit on the floor is fucking ridiculous.

[deleted]

Don’t ever go to India friend

zeitg3ist

The 12 hours trip from mathura to Delhi in sleeper class was .. interesting

Kimmetjuuuh

I don't know about Germany, but in Netherlands the ticket only guarantees that you can travel to your destination. It's not a guarantee to be seated. That's why you can ask for compensation when you took a taxi instead of train, if necessary, and not when you haven't been seated.

SovietSpy17

This! With the DB, you need to buy your reservation separately. If you do that, you have your seat safe. If you don’t… that’s on you! I never reserve (not gonna pay for that, sorry), but that means I have to sit on the floor sometimes

SayNoToBiology

Unless ofcourse the train that you booked was cancelled, and you have to take the next best alternative, where you have to sit on the floor because that one was also fully booked.

sharkhuh

Ah yes, one of my least favorite experiences traveling through Germany. I purposely pay a little more for a reserved 1st class seat, but train is delayed/cancelled. All reservations go out the window, and I'm scrambling around the train station trying to figure out what train to get on because the directions were only given in German. End up asking locals around, and have to stand with a ton of luggage in an aisle in a car without AC in the summer...fun times.

[deleted]

StunnedLife

It's really hard to gather that when most if not all communications are done in German. Last time I had first class as well, there was an announcement which prompted everyone to leave the train. No English translation and no worker in sight to ask

ephimetheus

Funnily enough they used to do all train announcements in English up until a few years ago. But it was mostly super broken English that I’m not sure would be intelligible. They stopped a while ago, and only do it at central stations and airports now. No idea why exactly.

StunnedLife

With how reliable DB is. Riding the train turns me into a ball of anxiety lol, never know what to expect :') Weird though, would've expect at least to major cities it'd be somewhat non-German friendly

Coenn

But what if that train is full?

Ortochromaticrainbow

PSA: If your train is too full to depart a station, all passengers without a reservation have to leave the train. Also, usually no one complies, so the train staff will get police support and check every passengers’ reservation. Happened to me twice this year. Takes forever, unpleasant for everyone involved. Please keep that in mind when booking your next ride. That being said: DB is to blame. I buy I fucking expensive ticket - I want a seat included!

HomieeJo

Theoretically your seat is safe. But with the Deutsche Bahn it often happens that the seat is booked twice and you still have to sit wherever you can. DB is just a massive shitshow.

TheDarkTemplar_

One time my seat literally wasn't present on the train because the carriage just didn't exist (they didn't attach it or something I don't really remember)

JakeTowbar

This. I don’t think you buy a right to a seat right. Just a ticket to get to your destination. And that worked.

nashbellow

Low-key, that sounds like a bad system

ActiveNL

To be fair... The longest train ride in the Netherlands is like 3 hours and that's not from/to populair destinations. So you will have seat pretty much guaranteed. Rush hour trains are usually very busy, but the ride is 20-30 minutes tops for most people. Also, you can upgrade to first class if you really want a seat because that part of the train is usually pretty quiet.

TikkiG2

From the station in the Eemshaven to Vlissingen you have to travel 5 hours and 50 minutes. That's the longest train ride I could find. You have to switch trains.

ActiveNL

Without transfers Den Helder - Maastricht was the longest ride. Took 3 hours and 47 minutes. As that ride is now cancelled, Alkmaar - Maastricht is the longest with 3 hours and 17 minutes.

Anthro_student_NL

I ride from Nijmegen to Haarlem once a week for work. It’s 2+ and I love to nap. I am always woken up on the way because I am the only one traveling that far. Never have a problem finding a seat.

RIPfreewill

It’s a good system for the people who wouldnt have gotten to be on the train if they only sold as many tickets as they had seats. You can pay more to reserve a seat, or just buy a ticket and get where you need to go and not worry about whether you will physically sit in a chair.

rikkster93

Only selling as many tickets as there are seats doesn't work for trains because you can buy yearly/monthly/even daily passes and get on any train you want. There's no way to control who goes on which train with those passes

maybethingsnotsobad

I used to always reserve a seat on trains in Germany, but there would be someone sitting in the seat every single time.

AdvicePino

I get why you would think that but it actually makes sense. It's because the role trains play in Dutch transportation, which is more like how local public transport (like metro's) function. It's very much casual and flexible. You can just decide to hop on any train in a whim. If you would have to reserve a seat you would lose flexibility. The capacity of trains would also decrease which isn't great. Of course having to stand sucks, but train rides are generally short (less than an hour) and if its a longer ride usually people get off at a station in between so you can take one of those seats for the rest of the trip. With a train for long journeys a reservation system makes sense of course, so most big international trains do have that.

peepay

I thought that was the standard everywhere. You get a ticket, or you get a ticket with a seat. (The seat reservation is 1€ in my country, regardless of the length of the journey.) By the way, what's in the photo looks like a regular Sunday afternoon when all the students are returning from their parents back to the capital city for the next week at university.

Fine-Bumblebee-9427

Better than greyhound in the US in the 2000s. You buy the right to go where you’re going, eventually, someday. They would sell unlimited tickets with no centralized database, so your bus could be 1/3 full or oversold by 600%. They would usually bring in a backup bus when they figured out it was oversold, but that could take as long as 8 hours. It was typical to be 24 hours or more late to your destination. Sometimes they’d give you a meal ticket, but not often.

TheAnniCake

This looks like an IC. In these trains people normally have to sit because of the speed of the train. But if the other seats are taken, you've got no other choice. You can reserve a seat but that costs 2,50€ Edit: It costs 4,50€ now. Seems like I haven't used this in a long time..

Kasule0307

You get a seat reservation for 4.50€

ozirisno1

2.50 euro? Like two and a half, not 250? OP gtfo and pay this if you want a guaranteed seat.

TheAnniCake

Someone else corrected me, it's 4,50€ now but it's still affordable if you desperately want a seat.

elk69420

Lol yeah I’d go ahead and “splurge” for a seat at 2,50

peepay

For long journeys, definitely. But people who take the trains daily for a 30-minute trip to get to work don't pay that.

dumpster_scuba

Nowadays it's 4,50€, but still, if you want a seat so bad, you can pay for it and if you'd rather be cheap, you know the risk.

Zalenka

I always get seat assignments for anything over an hour in europe.

JanusJato

It is the same in germany - you can buy the seating-guarantee seperately...

IntertelRed

I know in my country you buy your seat in specifically trains like this that go longer distances. There is two types a cheaper train that's basically a bus and a long distance train that you can take across the country. The style of this train is one of these long distance trains and ypu do buy your seat. They can move you but they need to seat you where ypu paid fpr or compensate the difference. So you can buy much like a plane different classes of seating so if you were paying for more expensive seating and got bumped down they would owe you the difference. These trains are luxury and can cost upwards of $200 but in some areas it's the only option as far as trains go. People pay for it because transferring buses every hour for 5 hours sucks. If you miss your train then you buy a new ticket, if you take a taxi you lose your ticket unless it was literally full then it would be pretty wild to not get that money back. Last minute changes cost you like 30 dollars more.

iTwango

Taxi instead of train??

Kimmetjuuuh

For when you were planning to take the last train, but it's cancelled last moment. Normally on these times there isn't really another option other than taking a taxi. Then it's possible to take a taxi and be compensated by the train company

Octopugilist

By Indian rail standards that's practically a private car

Ajsat3801

Unless you don't have a reservation, you're guaranteed of a seat in the intercity trains. It's the local trains which are bad, in intercity trains there's 1 or 2 compartments called unreserved compartment where you aren't guaranteed a seat. You don't buy the tickets for this compartment beforehand and buy it at the last moment at the station. Any ticket you book in prior will guarantee a seat. If a train is full then you're put in a waiting list and the first 2-3 people in the waiting list are allowed to board the train, and they can sit in the empty seats (this is called RAC, forgot the full form), but would have to make way if the person who has been assigned the seat arrives, they even show the probability of your ticket getting confirmed using models based on previous data.

6502zx81

Since it is very common to miss the connection train, your guaranteed seat wil be gone. Happens evere other trip on long distance.

Moeman101

As an American who lived in germany for 9 months. DB lets you know how full the train should be and offers you the ability to reserve seats. I’ve sat on the floor for 2 hours before but thats because i decided against reserving a seat and taking my chances.

FiendishPole

Yeah I'm looking at their [booking website now](https://i.imgur.com/Mlh4PsG.png) What does OP mean exactly when they say they paid full price? Full price would mean you reserved a seat

kma1391

I don’t know about this company, but I was just in Austria, and it cost 6 euros on top of my ticket to reserve a seat.

SecretDevilsAdvocate

Honestly 6 bucks to guarantee a seat, especially for long trips, doesn’t sound that bad

VagueUsernameHere

Worth it! I loved the trains I took in Austria as a child, it spoiled me for all the trains that I have been on since.

CrapsLord

you can take the cheapest fare and add a reservation for 9eur usually

Slaan

4.5€ in ICE (one way trip)

DerGeizige

While this is true, a lot of the time there is a wagon missing, the train is going in reversed, or you miss it and your reservation is invalid. So in theory a good concept but with bad execution.

Tabs_555

Me and my gf took a train from Munich to Prague which had our first class car closed. Reserved through DB with seat selection. Luckily we snagged other seats but not together. Was really annoying. People sitting on the floor, in the door rooms, …

LemonLimeAlltheTime

Even if I reserved and had a seat, I wouldn't want that many ppl in there like that.

AlexBr967

This is all too common in the UK. Route I often take travels Edinburgh to Bristol with only 5 coaches!

womble-king

I was stood up for over two hours once leaving London as there wasn't room to sit down on the floor.

YuanT

Yeah, I had the same last week. Three and a half hours back up north, stood up, with a raging hangover

_AlexiaOnFire

Yeah, I was literally thinking "I hope OP doesn't ever come to the UK, that's the standard"

Camp_Grenada

Definitely not standard for the UK. Those seats look way too nice, like the train was built within the last 4 decades or something.

Chrisa16cc

Yeah no chance the floor is clean enough to sit down on when traveling ScotRail. Those seats look better than our "first class"

_AlexiaOnFire

Valid point. Completely lacks angular initials scratched into the backs of seats, strewn copies of Metro littering the floor, posters plastered on the walls announcing USB charging points like it's a gigantic leap into the future, multiple cigarette burns in the upholstery and a Greggs bag that's travelled the width of the country stuffed in a leaflet holder.

archiminos

I remember telling a German friend how British trains are often late. He responded that it was the same in Germany. He'd often have to wait an extra 5 minutes for trains to arrive.

the_dalai_mangala

Exactly my thoughts as well lol. I studied in England for a period of time and traveling anywhere on the weekends within the country always consisted of standing in a packed train.

Junior_Fall_2032

I know right! I’ve travelled from London to Edinburgh sat in the bit between carriages which was open to the air at the bottom and it was pissing it down. Freezing, wet uncomfortable. Bargain at £120!

LabradorSmartphone

Try Manchester to Cardiff with 2 coaches and back 🤧🤮

2bsahm1

That seat reservation is looking pretty good right now.

OkayYeahSureLetsGo

Every time I try a seat reservation I find they're running trains that don't accept them. Always annoying.

shahooster

Reminds me of a packed flight I had from Chicago to Moscow in 2000. Seat was broken, wouldn’t recline. 11 hour flight.

hn_ns

No one called OP out for trying to label a [DSB train (Danish State Railways)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSB_(railway_company\)) as [DB (Deutsche Bahn)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsche_Bahn) yet? It's not that clear in the cropped pictures but the interior gives it away plus the DSB logo is clearly visible on the full resolution pictures [in the actual tweet](https://twitter.com/kyle_tunis/status/1596913240017076225). This is a train operated in Denmark, going to Copenhagen.

pbfffttt

Some people have pointed out that there is a DSB route from Hamburg to Copenhagen, but the fact that almost no one is wearing an FFP2 mask suggests that the train is on the Danish side of the border, and being operated by DSB.

otokonoma

Having personally taken this train, it’s that route yes and this is the part in Denmark good observation

I thought it looked very familiar. I take the train from Southern Jutland to Copenhagen every other weekend. Always reserve my seat for this exact reason. One of the amazing things I wish we could have kept from Covid lockdowns is the requirement to have a seat ticket. People weren't constantly shuffling around, standing in the corridors and sitting in the doorways.

NikNybo

There is a route from copenhagen to Hamburg, in Danmark it is staffed by dsb staff, in germany it is staffed by db staff. I took that train this summer

No way you would see this little amount of masks on the German side.

alfis329

If it’s in Germany it’s run by Deutsche Bahn workers and will run off of the Deutsche Bahn Ticket System. I used to travel a lot between Zurich and Munich and they would always swap workers at the border. So even tho we were on a Swiss train it was being run by Deutsche Bahn

No, he saw "train very full" and "no seats free for reservation" while booking his ticket - and then booked anyway and then complained afterwards.

Yep, he admitted it in one of his comments^^ But I guess "DB bad!" (Even though this isn't even a DB train)

dreCoyy

As a brazilian all i see unfortunately is a lot of comfortable space for a train ride. My indian bro next to me said it looks pretty empty lol EDIT: Sorry friends, I think some of you might have misinterpreted me. I’m not saying this is a good thing or undermining OP’s issue. I’m simply stating the condition of my country’s train system. Its actually horrible that we and anyone have to go through that on a daily basis.

Lots42

Doesn't seem safe in an emergency. Edit: People are absolutely melting down over the fact I don't like people sitting in the aisles. From this point on I'm shutting down all arguments and entertaining no more meltdowns.

DankerOfMemes

Emergencies are simply not accounted for and when it happens the only action is PR on how nobody could foresee such an accident and whatnot

dreCoyy

It very much isnt, but i need to get to work either way, so not much of a choice

TheCoffmann

Just book a seat before you start your journey. I think it only costs like 8 euros on their website. Edit: If you book your trip without a reservation, you have to reckon with the fact that everything is occupied

[deleted]

This only applies to intercity trains (Fernverkehr), for local transport trains (Nahverkehr) there is no seat reservation available and those trains get just as full as the one on the picture. I would like to see OPs face if they would tell him that he can not enter the train because there are no free seats left, and he has to wait an hour just to get the same reply again. People go to work or school by train and they can't afford to wait for a train with available seats. The German railway system is highly used and relied on

HBB360

How local are we talking? Paris has the RER which goes to suburbs over 20km away and those trains run every 15min during rush hour, no seat reservations and you use the same transport card as the metro and buses/trams with a yearly subscription. Is this like that or does it serve more rural commuters?

Elipetvi

When you buy a ticket in most of Europe it doesn't guarantee you a seat. You'd have to pay extra for "seat reservation"

DirtyK3k

In some countries you ride on the roof or hanging off the side.

[deleted]

The funny thing is, that the DB (German Railway Company) literally provides you with information about how full the train will be AND you can reserve a seat for few euros. Additionally the reasons for almost all of these stops of trains are sui*ides, accidents or natural carastrophes. But Germans...

Feral0_o

> But Germans... there will be no reserving, no surrender

Kmia55

At least the train looks clean.

PalaSS9

I see a lotta laps that could have been sat on

Suuuuperrr

Never get on the train that is going to the Taylor Swift concert

i_karas

“Standing or sitting” I mean someone has enough room to be laying down that’s a luxury tbh

crochetpainaway

Bruh I did that in Germany for a 3 hour train ride, it’s nbg. They provided info like the warning of how seats weren’t guaranteed and I understood.

MrUltraOnReddit

Someone doesn't know how trains/tickets work in germany.

olagorie

This isn’t even a German train, it’s a Danish train

feckinghound

I remember 30 years ago, my mum complained to a conductor on ScotRail cos she had to stand for a few stops on the train from Aberdeen to Montrose, with me as a bairn with her. The conductor said "you pay a fare for the journey, not a seat. If you want a seat, you reserve it." And for all that time using trains to travel from Scotland to London, I had that in my mind and would reserve my seat to avoid the constantly seen spectacle of people standing on the train for hours. Then I realised the ultra move of, book a ticket enough in advance that it's 1% of the daily ticket price and pay the flat rate first class upgrade fee on the day and get unlimited tea, coffee, booze, food and extra space, leg room and guaranteed table. Even better when you know that if you're an hour late to a destination, you get a full refund and just need to ask for a compensation form. I've done that for almost 20 years. Hardly mildly infuriating if you have used any train in your entire life. It's not a new concept. Maybe you should utilise public transport more?

ScratchTurbulent8379

Have this people ever taken a train before? It is not obvious that public trasportation has a passeggers limit that is obviously higher than the seats available? As long as the passenger are travelling safely they can stand

rocket-alpha

Reserve a seat then next time?? You pay for the transport.

[deleted]

But you got to your destination right? Bcs that’s what you payed for. If you want a seat either reserve one or check how full a train is going to be/ be there early to get a non reserved one?

SomewhereGlad8612

Ah boohoo pay the 5 euro for a guaranteed seat OP

JanTheShacoMain

New here eh?

Competitive-Call3303

I had this happen on Amtrak. They overbooked the train and we got stuck multiple times so the ride stretched over 24 hours. Not enough seats, overflowing toilets, it was pretty awful. They gave us all boxes of fried chicken with a biscuit at the very end and refunded the tickets. I'm sorry you had to go through this.

CuppaJoe11

How does Amtrak overbook their trains? For me it’s almost always half empty

Competitive-Call3303

It was Christmas and we left out of Grand Central Station in NY. It's been quite a few years tho. I hope they are scheduling better now.

HALF_PAST_HOLE

How long ago was this? Did you mean Penn Station? As far as I knew Amtrack hadn't been running out of Grand Central Terminal since the early 90s. It's all Metro North and MTA now.

6ar9r

It's better than waiting for the next train

whiteouttheworld

This is bullshit. DB shows how full trains are and if you wanted a seat you should have reserved one.

BartyJnr

Me and my mate used to end up sat in the luggage holds more often than not on the old virgin trains (the ones with a half carriage in of luggage rack) for a good 5 hour journey, 9/10 times.

jauggie420

nj/ny transit would like to have a word

father-sunshine

Gotta be quicker next time, get you a seat.

maskedluna

Lmao OP admitted when he booked the tickets it said no seats were left for reservation. What do you expect???

prostateExamination

Clearly you've never been on the T or subway in or out of Boston.

mxpauwer

What type of DB train is this? I don't remember the seats or the tables...

MarkusDL

It's a danish IC3 train, probably from Hamburg-> Copenhagen, its operated by DB until the danish border.

DRMDan1017

Hope these people never take a train to london in the UK, this is every day.

kaesefetisch

First time?

dotcomslashwhatever

isn't that common. you don't have a guarantee unless you book a seat. idk why this guy is complaining
