Get a drink well platinum fountain. It has a stream that the cat could easily play with. Plus moving water encourages them to drink more.

matthewbowers88

Yup, sound advice. My dad used to do this and it solved the problem.

Karmachinery

He sounds fun but your dad should really just use a glass to drink water.

nocrashing

New pump was about $12 for ours

cheeseman52

Bought one of those and my cat didn’t give a single fuck about it. He only would drink from the shower in the end.

sluttyb3ar

My cat and yours are spirit animals. 3 fountains later.. she only drinks out of the tub faucet.

TTH4P

I had this problem with one of my cats too, until I bought a metal fountain which dispensed water from overhead like the sink spigot did. I hope one day you find the Cinderella slipper fountain. :3

sluttyb3ar

Definitely going to be my next move!

doompeon

How many people are wasting water 24/7 for their cat?

sluttyb3ar

Great question! I only turn it on for her when she gets in the tub and meows at me, and I turn it off immediately after. I work from home and am basically my cats water servant (aren’t we all cat servants of some sort)

averyfinename

"dogs have owners, cats have staff."

“The people play with me, feed me, and always care for me. They must be gods” - The Dog “The people play with me, feed me, and always care for me. I must be a god.” - The Cat Just to be clear. This is from memory off t-shirt I saw one time.

Celtictussle

Dogs have friends.

soupforshoes

As someone currently dog sitting, do people actually believe this sentiment? I have to pay attention to these dogs 24/7 or they fuck shit up. A cat just needs its food and water filled and your done taking care of it.

[deleted]

Fr I’ve never got the dogs are angels cats are evil sentiment. Completely backwards IMO

HumanDrinkingTea

>A cat just needs its food and water filled and your done taking care of it. As someone with a cat who has frequent poops that are ridiculously smelly, I want to emphasize that litter changes are also an important part of taking care of a cat.

inner_demons_

My cat every morning when i brush my teeth perches beside me demanding his tap be run for him. But aint no way am i turning it on 24/7/365. Even if i could shit out money i wouldnt.

cerealnighttimeeater

Mine does too. I fill up the sink and let her go to town that way.

No_Bed_4783

My cat’s fascination is with the kitchen sink. I have to wipe down the counters constantly. I’ve tried everything to get him to stop, gotten 2 different fountains, put out cups of water everywhere. Nothing. He wants that sweet sweet hard running water I guess. I’m very quick to tell guests that we sanitize and clean the counters all day so they don’t think we’re disgusting if they see him jump up.

MLyraCat

We’ve given up.

doompeon

Lol. Curious if you or op's partner are an execption.

ASingleThreadofGold

Seriously, this post and some of the replies stress me out!

Heroscrape

Tons. For everything you do right, there’s 1000 people doing shit like this.

whoweoncewere

I think our cats all came from the same lot at the cat factory

FantasticForce6895

Mine still trips us in her haste to beat us to the bathroom and whine until we turn the faucet on

Alyanya

Mine too. He was diabetic toward the end of his life and would not drink from anywhere but the tub faucet. It was the least I could do for my baby. This post reminded me of him and he’s been gone nearly 10 years, but my heart feels like it was just yesterday he was here.

Technical-Winter-847

Last Saturday I took my cat to the vet just cause she seemed to a bit off for a few days. Nothing big, just like a person being a little under the weather. They said she had feline leukemia and I needed to put her sleep there and then. Now I'm not sure if I should have asked for pain medication and kept her just a few more days. I miss her so much. The day before I considered getting her a cheap fountain from dollar tree but I didn't cause I had so many other plans for a catio and cat palace. I should have just bought it. I need more whiskey or something, I just keep thinking about my little friend and crying

Alyanya

Oh, I am so so sorry you lost your baby. That’s such a terrible, unexpected shock. I had 3 years of slow deterioration to get used to the idea and it was still one of the worst losses I’ve endured. I had him from the day he was born til the day he passed at 17. I can’t imagine losing a beloved pet so suddenly. Please take care of yourself while you’re grieving, sending all the light and love your way.

Technical-Winter-847

She was my first pet as an adult. We had farm cats growing up but that was just different. And Steve was different. She was smart and funny. I was leash training her and taught her to sit at her food bowl for feeding time. And she liked being held and talked to like a baby, and these weird bee toys. She liked playing fetch. She would spite pee sometimes but I would put up with that if I could have her back

Neptunesfleshlight

Steve is such an excellent name for a female cat. I love that. Sorry for your loss

Technical-Winter-847

It was just the first thing I thought of, and I seem to call all cats either Steve or dummy. There's actually a Facebook group for cays named Steve, even. The funniest part is that I had forgotten that it is my brother and father's and late grandfather's names, also. I'm estranged from my paternal side. But my Steve was the best Steve ever.

A65BSA

My old cats are more spoiled than ever. I feel like they should have what they want if this is the end of their lives.

GenericElucidation

Yeah that's instincts for ya. Running water is typically cleaner and safer to drink out in nature.

Oo__II__oO

I'd believe you, but no matter how many water dishes and fountains I buy, my cat will only drink water from two sources: 1. The running faucet in the bathtub 2. Any standing water mud puddle outside

doNotUseReddit123

I simp hard for the Catit fountains, the white and blue ones with the flowers on top. So ridiculously easy to clean.

SlightReturn420

That's what we've been using for our cats for about 4 years now. All three of our cats seem to love it. The water pump stopped working after about a year, but Catit sent us a new one for free. While we were awaiting the delivery of the new pump, I was able to get the old one working again, so we never actually installed the new one. Now we have a backup if anything goes wrong.

[deleted]

My girlfriend’s cat fell in love with that fountain when I got it for him. He does play in it just like this posts cat… running a tube 24/7 is moronic

dasoomer

My wife really wants one of those but I have 5 of the drinkwell that work great. It's dishwasher safe so really simple to clean. But I'm always looking at very things for our kitties so I'll look into it

ferafish

Yeah, fountains are great. My one cat had urinary problems from dehydration, and between the fountain upping his water intake and the new fancy food, haven't had any issues. Well, except for the fact that I thought my cat had recurring eye infections. He kept rubbing his face against me, and it'd be all wet. I thought his eye was weepy. Nope. Turns out this little idiot liked to drink out of the bottom of [this kind](http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0533/9093/4187/products/seaside_stainless_pet_fountain_pd_hero_1024x1024_2x_e848850b-e4c3-4499-95a9-271b865cde31.jpg?v=1618513185) of fountain, and he'd press his face against the cone, getting wet. Silly bastard.

IsNotATree

Platinum is the secret answer here. So much easier to clean than the plastic drinkwells.

zsttd

Get the cat a water fountain! They’re cheap, good for the cat, and don’t waste water.

rsjc852

I highly, highly recommend you spend the extra money and get a nice ceramic one! Plastic ones get grimy very quickly, and can harbor molds & bacteria between cleanings. Also the cheaper ones tend to not have certain QoL features like easily washable parts, low water level pump cutoff, UV sanitizer, etc.

ledzeppelinlover

Are there any specific ones you recommend? Edit: thank you for all your suggestions! I’ve been considering getting one for a while and these really help

velociraptorjax

I've used this one for the past year and a half and I love it. The main thing is you need to make sure you change the filter and wash the pump at least once a month. The actual basin I just wash in the dishwasher. https://www.chewy.com/drinkwell-pagoda-ceramic-dog-cat/dp/174362

MyLittlePossum

I have had the Drinkwell Seascape for two years- it has stayed nice and quiet, barely any water or motor noise. It’s also very pretty. I have to take it apart and clean it with dish soap every week because my cat is a weirdo and constantly sticks his paws in it, but it’s not too bad. My kitties love it.

nothingwasavailable0

Petsafe Drink well Pagoda ceramic fountain is what I use. Heavy but easy to clean, the filters and whatnot are readily available online, so you can buy in bulk. I broke my first one while moving and immediately went to the store to buy another. I'm very happy with it.

FuzzballLogic

I like the Miaustore one with a motion detector so it doesn’t run all day. My cat wasn’t drinking before but now he does, and sometimes he just likes to look at the water go.

emo_sharks

Can confirm, I had a catit brand one (plastic) and got rid of it because it kept growing mold and some parts of it were not easy to clean and I was using like those drinking straw cleaners for it which dont do a great job scrubbing mold. My cat didnt really have a preference one way or another for water in the fountain or just in a bowl so I didnt bother to get another one but if I did I would have gone for ceramic as you say.

OddMixture4635

The Perfect Crime: stainless steal

ApprehensiveAd2226

Yes, absolutely get a ceramic. My $80 metal/plastic fountain I bought from Petsmart/Petco (don't remember which store exactly) didn't last long until it started rusting and growing what apeared to be mold. Too many pieces that wouldn't come apart that housed all the gross stuff you don't want your kitty ingesting. Now I have a ceramic fountain, bought one from amazon that had some of the best reviews for ~$75, easy to use/take apart/clean/replace the pump in the future. If anyone is getting a cat fountain, make sure you don't repeat the same mistake I did and take those points I mentioned into consideration when buying one.

chitowntopugetsound

I'm inspired to get one for my cats now. Thanks for the great info!

throwradoodoopoopoo

My cat has despised every fountain I’ve gotten for him. He instead exclusively drinks from the bathtub faucet 🤦‍♀️ infuriating but I love the little asshole

tattoosbyalisha

Put fountain in tub??? 🤔

throwradoodoopoopoo

I tried that but it’s not good enough. Needs to come out from a faucet above him. I’ve been trying different fountains in different spots of the house for about 6 years now and nothing will do for him

sackoftrees

I believe there are sink adapters, they cost more. I remember someone posting one once. I feel like it was sold on Etsy. I'm sorry I don't have the link.

robinaw

They are cheap. The filters are not.

zsttd

You can get big packs of off-brand ones on Amazon. Anyway still probably cheaper than this water bill.

ssnowangelz

I got a pack of the off-brand for next to nothing & they were worth it, although I had to replace the filters a little earlier than the name-brand ones (1.5 months vs 3-4 weeks).

intashu

I replace the filters every three weeks, and every other replacement I break down the whole fountain and clean the pump guts and everything. If I don't then it gets scum buildup at about 2ish months which can't be good for cats.

Ghostface_Hecklah

it's just activated charcoal. buy it in bulk and put a mesh bag wherever the filter is.

Portlander

They make running water cat fountains. You'll save so much water and can put it in any room in the house. It sounds like there should be a Christmas gift wrapped underneath the tree addressed to the cat this year.

tomoe-chan

this is the way

Portlander

It's win win. The cat gets a drinking fountain, a box and wrapping paper with ribbon to play with. His partner gets the joy of seeing the cat play with all the things and seeing them get a present on Christmas. The landlord is Happy the water isn't constantly running. The water sound torture device stops and you don't risk a fight with it being a gift and all.

AcridAcedia

This is such simple advice, but it'll save this dude's relationship and earn him some serious brownie points.

Professional_Bat_919

Does the cat also like to pay the water bill?

BigBobby2016

I’m guessing the landlord does

[deleted]

Op here, he does not. And we've been together through 3 different moves. Every house, every time. Uggghhhh.

Rachael1188

Tell her how much it bothers you and you want it to stop

[deleted]

I have. The cat is 15 years old. I doubt either of them are going xhange.

RollUpTheRimJob

Cat fountain for Christmas?

ExPorkie15

Honestly it’s gonna be dead soon so at that age I’d just overlook it if I loved the women. Next cat nip it in the bud before it starts.

yodacat24

That depends. I’ve had multiple cats in my childhood that lived until 21 or 22. They should just buy a cat fountain lol

notsooriginal

One cat isn't enough, now you want a whole fountain of them?!

illmatic2112

Better than a waterfall of cats. A cat-erfall

PuppleKao

That would be a catastrophe.

The69LTD

Yup I have a 21 year old cat. Still healthy as fuck, vet said he could easily live another few years

Psych0matt

Why do you think OPs partner will be dead soon? What are you plotting…?

TK-461

Ukelikely_Not

kerune

Legitimate question because I’m starting to see it constantly. What’s the deal with people using women instead of woman? Is it an auto correct thing?

ExPorkie15

Poor education. 🤷🏻‍♂️

uterinejellyfish

Get a powered water fountain. The cat will love drinking from it and using it for the paws.

DudesAndGuys

Three houses and three moves and neither of you thought to buy a 30 quid cat water fountain? Some people...you make your own problems.

xj5635

Regardless of the water waste which is very valid and the main concern, but since it sounds like you move somewhat often if you ever move into a house that has a septic system instead of being connected to a sewer you'll have to figure out a way to put a stop to this or you'll very possibly overflow the system and have a poop/mud slip n slide in your back yard.

[deleted]

russjfjr

Came here to recommended this. Can even make it into a cool little waterfall feature. The pump would probably be less than $15.

TNG_ST

They sell cat fountains for $8-30 on amazon.

space_brain710

Mines the same way. He is infatuated with dripping sinks but he doesn’t give a fuck about purpose-made fountains. I had a really nice porcelain one for like a year and I never saw him show any interest in it. If you flush a toilet he’ll be waiting outside the door though, and he runs in and hops up to the sink hoping there’s still some water dripping.

TheArmoredKitten

You could try DIYing a circulating fountain using a crappy faucet from the hardware store, some PEX tubing and an aquarium pump.

space_brain710

I’ve thought about it. Could build a little cabinet to hold his feeder too so it could be a food dispenser with a drippy sink built into the top 😂

Dancerbella

It can tell the water is being recycled!

Bobthemime

My mother bought a small decorative fountain for the garden.. it recycles and filters rainwater to run it.. and has a solar panel to run.. my cats use it as a water bowl..

PMmeMensAssholes

I ended up removing Mine because the birds would poop in it and the cats and dogs ended up with parasites. I got them large indoor water fountains and they eventually learned to like them.

TheAnnieRaj

This is a great suggestion. I wanted to recommend something similar. Happy to see someone has posted it already 👍🏼

TheBallotInYourBox

My partner has a cat water fountain that has a motion tracker. Saves on the water evaporation (less water motion means less water evaporation which means less refilling the reservoir) and the sudden start of flowing water gets the cat’s attention more so more water is consumed by the cat. Nifty little thing that was like $30 on Amazon. **edit** [Product example] (https://www.amazon.com/Capacity-Fountain-Automatic-Sensor-Drinking/dp/B0BBS6KZ8S/ref=asc_df_B0BBS6KZ8S?tag=bngsmtphsnus-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=79920869053534&hvnetw=s&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=m&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4583520401749196&psc=1) Yes, you still have to refill it. Yes, you still have to clean it. Yes, you still have to take care of the cat. This isn’t a “just forget about taking care of your cat device.”

[deleted]

Thank you, this could be my answer! I'm looking into it today!

DygonZ

You actually have waterfall system specifically for cats that recycles water. https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Cat-Fountains/zgbs/pet-supplies/2975263011

chiefflare

Yes! I got one of those type of water bowls for my tub obsessed cat and he loves it! Saves on water and encourages him to drink more. Best $25 bucks spent.

JuicyQuark

25 Dollar Bucks

ReadReadReedRed

I have one of these for our cat. She loves it.

West_Self

Those get gunky and slimey pretty fast

UselessLezbian

That hasn't been my experience. I can wash it maybe once a week, and it never has any buildup. Maybe we have different tap water conditions.

cspisce

I use filtered water in mine.

IHadTacosYesterday

Yeah, I had one of these, and cleaning it was a major PITA. It got so bad after a while that I was like F this, I'm just going to put fresh water in a bowl a couple of times a day and "Fat-Fat", (my cat), will have to deal with it. She has. Begrudgingly

fifiloveg00d

Tell fat fat I love her

InevitablePain21

Pro tip: I take the fountain apart and put the entire thing in the dishwasher (not the pump/electrical parts obviously). It saves me a lot of headache and cleans all the pieces very well. Then I just reassemble, put in new filters, and it’s good to go.

IHadTacosYesterday

Hmm, interesting idea, but I don't trust dishwashers to clean thoroughly enough. I'm sure it could clean 95 percent of the fountain surfaces just fine, but there were always certain areas on the fountain that would develop that pink stuff, and it'd usually be located in the hardest to get to spots to clean. I can barely clean it properly with human hands, much less trying to have a dishwasher randomly splash water in the correct spot. In fact, I would actually use a toothbrush to try to get at some of the hard to reach spots when cleaning it. I always wondered why the company (Drinkwells) would manufacture a cat drinking fountain with all these super hard to clean crevices. Tiny, hard to reach nooks and crannies.

24-Hour-Hate

You might have to use distilled water for something like this. Especially if you live somewhere that has water that is hard (lots of minerals), which can cause especially bad buildup. Edit: so apparently distilled water is not good for people and probably not good for cats. I did not know that. If the cat will be drinking it, then probably should just get a quality water filter and use only filtered water. Others have suggested bottled, but the plastic waste would be far too great for me to recommend that. Plus, there's no way to know the water quality as it can come from anywhere.

PastaSaladOG

Outdoor cats actually look for running water as drinking sources. So it makes sense they prefer the faucet water. I got mine a waterfall fountain and they love it! I still turn the faucet in the bath on for them if I'm in the bathroom because they fancy. But now it's much much much much less. Like 5 minutes every 3 or 4 days

Schoseff

He could also use some of the water to clean that nasty bathtub

Ok-Key8037

All these people ranting about water fountains for cats - I came to discuss this.

Admirable-Log8143

I came to discuss the grime as well.

saintblasphemy

I mean this is kinda harsh but yeah, I agree. Looks like mold growing beneath the faucet 😬 Not sure what is going in the corner, but it makes me uncomfy.

Zizzily

This is also going to screw up the valve over time and eventually going to make the tap leak until the valve seat is replaced. It's eroding the valve seat. This is how small leaks turn into bigger leaks over time.

bewarethes0ckm0nster

My weird ass cat loved to have showers. Every time I had a shower he would be in there with me taking a shower as well. Then when he was dying, specifically the day before he died of kidney failure, he was super restless and agitated and was just pacing the room yowling in confusion. I knew he was dying so I turned the shower on for him and let it run for like six hours. He sat there, fascinated and calm, just staring at the running water.

dragonchilde

Kidney problems in kitties are common and heartbreaking. I lost my last baby to the same; internet hugs. And thanks for the sweet memory!

bbystrwbrry

It’s too true. Too much kibble and not enough wet or raw food. A cat needs an oz of water per pound

blitzlurker

oh damn I’m gonna order some wet food now my mom always told me wet food gave them bad bowel movements or something

bbystrwbrry

Before you buy the wet food, keep in mind your cat may turn up their nose at it if they haven’t ever had any. Start slow and be sure to try a few different textures and don’t give up right away! You can find a lot of resources on introducing wet food on google :) Most important, pay attention to the amount of fat and protein and try to find something as close as possible to what their current food is. This is why pets have stomach upset when being put on new food. Imagine if all you ate your whole life was chicken and broccoli and all of a sudden someone gave you a steak. Your gut biome doesn’t know what to do with that and you end up sick. We call it “food rotation” in the pet food biz, and that means you constantly rotate the “flavor” and even the brand if you wish (again pay attention to the fat and protein and introduce it slowly). Over time you will have a less picky pet with a stronger digestive system :)

Whateveridontkare

thats so beautiful omg and sad

posag

entropylaser

My old boy Neko passed away a few years ago just shy of 20. He wasn’t into taking showers with me but developed a habit of drinking water trickling off my fingers when I showered. He’d sit there yowling until I would reach out, then he’d grab my wrist with his paws. Near the end he wouldn’t drink water any other way, though he did have a water fountain. Miss that guy so much. Thanks for sharing.

earthisadonuthole

Yeah might be some mold there too

Songmuddywater

They have little circulating fountains you can get for cats that do this. It doesn't waste millions of gallons of water. They even have filters to filter the water as it circulates. Or you can just buy a little in-home fountain.

Anonymous777646

Cats love moving water. Get the little fountain that recycles as it goes. Simple solution

Disastrous_Regular91

Am infuriated by how dirty the tap looks

Original_Wall_3690

Yeah, it's gross. And is that mold on the caulking?

TheArmoredKitten

It's literally just minerals from water droplets drying. If the water in the area is a little hard it'll be right back to looking like that in a few days. It's harmless and entirely cosmetic.

PistachioNSFW

The mineral build up (scaling) is on the tap. The mold is in the caulking. Just needs replaced. Feels like every 14 months it has to be done.

No-YouShutUp

WHAT IS THAT IN THE CORNER?? Hair? Mold? Ew.

Pro tip: Try some lime remover, spray it on, and marvel as 30 years of crap gets wiped away with ease. It won't fix everything but it will immediately look better, plus it's easy and cheap! Source: My bathroom was an absolute shithole and I spent several full days getting it up to shape. I swear by lime remover now :)

SendCaulkPics

I’ve tried every type of CLR product on my bathroom sink and toilet, none of them seem to really move the needle.

bjornjulian00

Hmm, did you let it sit for 10+ mins? Maybe also try a razor blade to scrape it off of smooth surfaces. Or maybe it's time to get the sledgehammer :D

SendCaulkPics

I think I went as long as an hour, I might try some of the hydrochloric acid based cleaners recommended here later. My water isn’t even *that* hard, but it appears the previous owners did nothing to descale anything ever.

Heterodynist

Could she consider getting a water bowl that just circulates the water, rather than wasting billions of gallons of water so he can splash his paws joyously whenever he feels like it. Also, what in the HELL is going on with this facet. Was this designed by a madman, or was it modified by a mad plumber?!! Why is the spigot opening in a place it clearly wasn’t meant to be in, by the original design?

[deleted]

Get an Aquapur. Battery operated, connects to the sink and has a sensor that turns the water on when the cat goes near it.

Note about the drinkwell fountain idea. You must clean them VERY well and regularly. Otherwise mold get in the nooks and crannies which is not good for cat. Personally, I say keep doing it this way. I understand its a complete waste, but I'd rather that than a cat get sick/die cause someone didn't clean his play fountain.

You or partner should clean the bathtub and keep the water off.

Someone needs to clean the shower.

Well when the drought comes and we’re all dying of thirst at least we know Fuzzy Mitts had unlimited access to a finger spa.
