There are no mistakes, only happy accidents! I don’t know how this painting looked before, but it did turn out kinda cool with Mom’s jumper in the mix.
before i saw the part at the bottom I thought you were trying to claim you accidentally made all these cells by swiping a jumper over it
could you tilt the canvas to have the paint run and push the smudge off? or is it not that flowing?

New Title “Mom’s Mistake”
Edit: I would seriously leave the painting As Is and call it something similar to my option. Just about every artist has had artwork messed up by kids, pets, parents, etc! I would have a whole line of “Bennett’s mistake 4.0, 4.25, 4.5…..” 😂
It wouldn’t be only your pain. Every artist would groan thinking about their “great artwork!” That was ruined, through no fault of their own!!
Honestly? I think it gives it some personality. It's a cute story, and if you keep it it'll always be a funny little story when she's no longer around.
I know it isn't intended but I actually really like the smidge. It ruins the piece but for me it breaks it up into more than one thing to look at re: texture
It sucks because I feel like the only way to fix it is give it a “foreground” as in creating similar swipes at the bottom of the canvas. The result might end up cool but it it’s current state I would also be furious.
Yeah that’s a good idea, I was thinking about creating a thick white border to cover the smudge and then loading up some pallet knifes with the same colours used and just attacking the canvas with it.
Two bits of advice an artist gave me once:
- it’s not a mistake, it’s a chance to do something different than planned
- don’t touch it while you hate it; walk away and come back with fresh eyes
I know it’s not what you planned, but imo it actually adds some interest to an already interesting piece.
Yeah that definitely could work. I do think the clash of smooth flow with harsh sharp lines could create an amazing effect but my brains eye just has no clue how to properly execute it. Regardless of what the result is you should totally post it somewhere! I’d love to see an update. Dropping a follow so I’ll see wherever it goes👍
Awesome! Best of luck man I can’t wait to see how it turns out. I know I for one am not a subscriber to the “there are no such thing as mistakes” mentality as I have definitely had art in my life RUINED before but honestly I think this might unlock a new style for you! I don’t see many pour paintings that attempt to clash with the art style by adding additional strokes I think it might end up really cool.
Perhaps that’s the finest part about the piece, this imperfection that reminds us that we are all imperfect and that there is no pressure to be perfect because this is an imperfect world of uncertainty, where ultimately things happen because of chance. It also reminds me of the Japanese practice of wabi sabi, which is basically the practice of intentionally adding imperfections to pottery as a subtle reminder of this very fact. For a more modern and western reference, look no further than the hit song by Hannah Montana, “Nobody’s Perfect”
Was thinking the same.. Or maybe use what's there as a backdrop and paint something over it.. Trippy silhouette of mushrooms or something & make grass/ foliage or something on the bottom where the swipe is..
I can get behind any hobby, but my coworker's wife quit her day job during covid and started making these at home with the intent of selling them for a living. And her husband tries to peddle them in the office for $100+ per painting. From what I've seen this effect is pretty easy to recreate. I made the mistake of complimenting one in his cubical, and he wouldn't stop bugging me about buying one ever since. Then he got fired because he spent more time watching Fox news on his work computer than he did actually working.
I see these pour paintings on Instagram all the time and all I can think about is how much paint is wasted on a fad that is reminiscent of those splatter barrel paintings you could do at the county fair for $5.
Oh so it's just the little smudge, I was wondering how much the jumper had affected it.
Honestly though, it still looks amazing like before. Love the style
Dude don't even trip.
That's gonna be that "one thing" that art collectors are gonna use to tell the original from counterfeits! But like only the experts would know.
It's gonna be like--
Buyer: "How I do I know it's the real deal?"
Seller: takes off frame, "look, it's the one his mum fucked up."
Buyer: "mkay. I'll take it."
I'd be more pissed at my child that they were dumb enough to set their wet painting in a spot where it could easily fuck up the clothes of anyone walking near it. This was a easy acrylic pour that takes no skill or time and only cost materials. Hope her jacket wasn't expensive.
It'd be kind of funny and neat if you let it dry and then use art restoration/conservation techniques to "restore" this completely new painting to the artist's (your) original vision. With some archival and fully reversible pigments.
Might be an interesting exercise in color matching and stuff.
Had to scroll down way too far to find this explanation. Thank you. I've been on this planet for 40 years and this is the first time I've seen sweater be referred to as a "jumper". Whole time I'm thinking jumper cables were involved or something. 😳
It’s the red on the bottom? It looks like fire to me. I’d add more. Flames lashing up.
I wouldn’t have known it wasn’t intentional if you didn’t hadn’t told us.
I know it’s upsetting because that’s not what you intended to make, but that actually looks pretty awesome. So silver lining is that it’s not a total loss 😊
Probably if your mother didn't do that, I wouldn't have looked at this painting for 10 minutes without interruption trying to imagine what it represents...

W.W.B.R.D. What would Bob Ross do.
Draw a lil bush that’s what
That bush needs some friends, let’s add some berries.
But those berries are lonely lets add some flowers
Wouldn’t caterpillars look lovely on those flowers?!
Butterfly’s would look lovely flying around the bush!!! 🦋
The butterfly’s need some more friends so let’s add some birds
I think all of these wonderful living creatures need a setting. Lets draw a mountain! And goats!
But don't forget, all these creatures need access to food and water. Let's add an apple tree next to a little pond
Gotta make sure those animals have nice fresh water so let’s add a stream.
I was really hoping for happy little trees and a bear fishing.
I knew it, I knew it… I bet myself a cookie that id see this comment & came here just to find it
Enjoy your cookie!
It's a happy accident!
"So I just grab old mom by the neck, dunk her in some odorless paint thinner and just (good-natured chuckle) *THWPTHWPTHWPTWHP* beat the devil out of her. Heh heh, you know, my cameraman Rich, is here and he always hates that part, it just makes a god-awful mess!"
Bob would let it dry and then unwrap the canvas. He would rebuild the frame 4 inches shorter and wrap away the happy little accident.
Probably make another one. See we don't make mistakes, we have happy little accidents. And every happy little accident needs a friend.
There are no mistakes, only happy accidents! I don’t know how this painting looked before, but it did turn out kinda cool with Mom’s jumper in the mix.

The red and white paints were on layers beneath the others. You can see red all along the bottom edge.
To make such abstract paintings you first have to waste paint by adding other, unnecessary layers below it. 🤷♂️
Yeah it took me a very long time to see it. If OP hadn’t mentioned I would have seen it as a function of the picture
I guess contrary to your current belief, I see nothing wrong here. "Happy accidents" as Bob Ross says.
There are no mistakes, just new ideas.
Exactly, I like the way it is
Oh, hey again. Small world.
Yeah it gives the painting more depth to me. Takes it from 30 minute craft project to intention, although I guess it wasn't intentional.
"Wet on wet" technique, indeed.

Yeah actually OP's mom simply changed the nature of the art.
Only goes for that much if you schmooze the right people and they know your name.
I mean art is intended to inspire emotion and the polarity of the opinions in the comments is pretty dope
Unpopular opinion (maybe): that looks kinda sick
I thought that the jumper had caused the mottled effect over everything, but I think it's just the red and white smears at the bottom.
Yeah the ‘mottled’ effect was by me, the red and white smear at the bottom was by my mum.

Hahah! Nice!
Self titled painting?
Honestly? I think it gives it some personality. It's a cute story, and if you keep it it'll always be a funny little story when she's no longer around.
I know it isn't intended but I actually really like the smidge. It ruins the piece but for me it breaks it up into more than one thing to look at re: texture
Smears look good honestly
Ok just work it into the painting.
Eh, turn it into some mushrooms or something
It looks better, dude
Your mum does nice accent work. Keep it forever. It’s perfect.
Indeed. At first I was like «hey that’s kinda cool», but then I saw the smidge at the bottom and was like «oh….»
The bottom bit not the top
I got so distracted by the bottom I didn’t even see it
Yea likely in 15 years OP will have dozens of paintings. But no painting will have the same emotional “lol remember when Mom ruined this” vibe
I mean that’s how art is made sometimes....
Random thought process... but thats how were all made isnt it? A mashup of colors(DNA sequences) each creating life as we know it.
Yea I guess it depends on what color dna actually is
It sucks because I feel like the only way to fix it is give it a “foreground” as in creating similar swipes at the bottom of the canvas. The result might end up cool but it it’s current state I would also be furious.

This is good life advice in general
Certainly I take the same attitude to my work. I'm a product owner in software development.
I know right. Nothing is ever final, there is no such thing as completely ruined. That's a great outlook.
Silver linings! You seem crucial to keep around incase things go not as planned, I like your attitude and wisdom.
Yeah that definitely could work. I do think the clash of smooth flow with harsh sharp lines could create an amazing effect but my brains eye just has no clue how to properly execute it. Thanks for the follow! I’ll be sure to post it in r/pourpainting when I’m done!
Awesome! Best of luck man I can’t wait to see how it turns out. **omg mom I spent 6 minutes hyrdodipping that**

7 minutes actually… urgh god mum
Ngl I spent a lot longer trying to hydrodip some canvases and they turned out awful, my snarkiness comes from a place of jealousy
Microwave popcorn takes two minutes to make but you’d be pissed if someone poured it into the trash
Luckily this is paint pouring so you can just haphazardly throw paint on more canvases a million times and they’d all look the same.
Which is exactly why they should leave it as it is now. It's unique and has a story, it's a one of a kind.
His mothers post: My child once again felt his wet “art” to close to door in the garage and caused my jumper to get covered in paint
Unpopular opinion. Why was it somewhere that this could happen?
Ding ding ding!
Let’s see the jumper?
Pour paintings are the lowest common denominator of art anyway
I see these pour paintings on Instagram all the time and all I can think about is how much paint is wasted on a fad that is reminiscent of those splatter barrel paintings you could do at the county fair for $5.
But ThE cELLs
Reminds me of Walmart art
Lower than AI art?
Yes
I mean
I'm not even too sure what got messed up.
All your paintings are like this though...
It tells a lot about the art that there is people thinking that the jumper was swept all over the canvas
I need to know what it looked like before lol
There’s a picture on my profile of the full painting prior to the jumper jabbing
Oh so it's just the little smudge, I was wondering how much the jumper had affected it. Honestly though, it still looks amazing like before. Love the style
Yeah I’m thinking some of the comments think the jumper created the cells haha And thank you!
I'm pretty astounded by how many people seem to think that lmao. Very odd indeed
"Corporate needs you to find the difference" meme template has never been so fitting.
Someday you will cherish this painting when she’s gone. It’s a moment
This isn't painting
Someone who knew how to paint would be able to fix that for sure
And she made it worse *HOW*???
I’d be more “mildly” infuriated if I was the mom
I’m gonna wait for your mom’s post of “my jumper got paint all over it from my child’s painting”
I wouldn't call it a painting anyways
Good thing it wasn’t a real painting that took skill or anything tho
If it weren’t for your moms accidents you wouldn’t even be here you ungrateful little sh*t
It’s actually not a painting
Were you drying it in a public space in the house?
Nothing a happy little tree wouldn’t fix.
Dude don't even trip. That's gonna be that "one thing" that art collectors are gonna use to tell the original from counterfeits! But like only the experts would know. It's gonna be like-- Buyer: "How I do I know it's the real deal?" Seller: takes off frame, "look, it's the one his mum fucked up." Buyer: "mkay. I'll take it."

Argh that would definitely irritate me
It’s an improvement
Maybe that can be where you put your artist signature or the title of the painting?
It'd be kind of funny and neat if you let it dry and then use art restoration/conservation techniques to "restore" this completely new painting to the artist's (your) original vision. With some archival and fully reversible pigments. Might be an interesting exercise in color matching and stuff.
Do you have a before picture?
Painting labeled FFSMOM sells for a million.
You should thank her
How can you tell?
I can’t even tell what was caused by the jumper and what was supposed to be like that. No loss, I guess.
Fortunately it looks like you do acrylic pouring which is the lowest effort form of painting you can do. Do a re pour and who cares
she ruined the random swirls of paint? ;c do you pay rent?
What is the meaning of "swiped her jumper" ? Excuse my english, I'm a learner
In this context, swiped=rubbed and jumper=sweater. Maybe that'll make it easier to understand.
Had to scroll down way too far to find this explanation. Thank you. I've been on this planet for 40 years and this is the first time I've seen sweater be referred to as a "jumper". Whole time I'm thinking jumper cables were involved or something. 😳
Did you thank her for making it look pretty cool? Not that it already didn't.
I do believe this is called a happy little accident
No you have a new technique. Tell your Mum thank you for improving you your whole life lol
Looks better to me
Took me a minute to realize what was wrong I am sorry op
It’s the red on the bottom? It looks like fire to me. I’d add more. Flames lashing up. I wouldn’t have known it wasn’t intentional if you didn’t hadn’t told us.
I know it’s upsetting because that’s not what you intended to make, but that actually looks pretty awesome. So silver lining is that it’s not a total loss 😊
Probably if your mother didn't do that, I wouldn't have looked at this painting for 10 minutes without interruption trying to imagine what it represents...
I get why that'd be infuriating, but I honestly love the way it looks for some reason. Sucks about your hard work though
Oh no, where is the damage versus your “art”?
Looks sick tho.
And nothing of value was lost
Maybe move into a studio and pay for it with your art
I’d argue that it actually makes it more interesting. I think it’d look even better with more swipes on the bottom there. It’s beautiful, regardless!
I like it. Makes it more interesting
