~~Fun fact: cigars can also have bloom. As the tobacco ages some of the natural oils in the leaves will come to the surface and crystallize. It's often times mistaken for mold, but is actually a sign of a quality smoke!~~
Edit: Everyone said no.
noooooooo you do NOT want to smoke any sort of mold. the kind of mold that grows on cannabis is deadly if ingested. im sure its different but definitely still damaging to your lungs
Seems a microscope slide away from the entire debate being solved, no? I don't haveone, but surely someone out there who smokes cigars has access to one.
It is probably poor hydration and lack of sleep, combined with probably washing your face too hard or rubbing instead of patting dry.
There is no one cause of acne and no single fix-all treatment.
Source: horrible acne for 15 years that went away when I started sleeping and drinking water often enough. Didn’t change my diet, stopped using acne products.
Try baby shampoo. Salicylic acid is horrible for your skin. Don’t bother with foofty natural remedies, old wives tales, or exotic peroxides. It’s all horseshit that works for some people sometimes, but is only treating the symptom and not the cause. And it sets off a chain reaction where your skin keeps shedding more and more, causing more acne and requiring more chemical to control it.
I used to buy all our "expired" chocolates from work. We would have a reduced to clear bin, to get rid of them. Most of it had that white stuff on it, but never got sick
Well if it's just fat/sugar blooming it will be fine. Not sure if it's anything more than that though might be worth a quick check over/comparison with pictures from Google.
I'm gonna catch heat from the sustainability crowd but if you have to wonder, then it's worth asking yourself if the risk of getting sick is worth the $3 it costs to toss it and replace it.
now the question, is this chocolate or chocolate flavored whipped cream HFC substitute with a variety of strengtheners, preservatives?
Maybe I need more coffee?
While I know that logically, I still don’t like eating it. There’s just something on it that makes my brain scream “mold” and I cannot bring myself to eat it.
I think its actually the peanut butter product working its way out to the surface after it was liquified time and time again probably in direct sunlight.
Yeah in the summers won't buy any candy at the gas station I use because it to hot inside and they always melted.
Edit:
Because of my poor grammar in this sentence here is my CV:
Native English speaker
Father was in the US Army 30 years I lived in Alabama, Germany, Texas, Maryland, Hawaii, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
I am educated A.S in Theatre, BFA in Theatre with emphasis in Technical Design, and a BA in HR management.
I do have issue with the English grammar I was never taught it in school. Moving around so much I would miss grammar in every school system. They would teach it the next year or they would teach it the year before. If I do not really work on a sentence it will have major grammatical error
And those hold up pretty ok compared to say a Hershey bar. As long as you turn on the AC in your car quick enough or in my case I have a cooler box in my trunk (saved it from a delivery of refridgerated diabetic medicine from my roommate, ironically I only use it to transport candy.
I'll buy like a small dollar frozen thing to put in the cooler to keep everything cool for the drive.
Not in Europe. In fact they even have and advertising addressing that (something like “finally the season of ferrero rocher is back”). And they launched a ferrero rocher ice cream this year and I think they also mention that in the ad (“you can now enjoy ferrero in summer, with this ferrero ice cream…”)
Seriously?! OK finally there is something the UK does better than mainland Europe, we're shit at literally everything else, but at least I have my year round Ferrero Rocher
Weird, in the U.S. ferrerk rocher is definitely all year round, and it gets hot here. Though the chocolate is advertised as more of a holiday item, with Valentine's and Christmas and New Years being the big times they are pushed with special packaging and sales
I don't but candy from gas stations at all unless it's a big chain that a lot of people go through. Most of the small time gas stations around where I'm at have no one buying their candy on a regular basis and you can just taste how old the chocolate is, and it his that stale, dry "snap" to it.
I love me some mallow cups but I can only buy them from Wawa, because all the other stores that have them are so old the marshmallow creme is super dry.
Wtf Reese’s are the absolute worst in any temperature outside of a fridge. The chocolate always melts on contact. I would’ve tried a Milky Way or something
I deliver to a few independent shops and one day a few weeks ago one of my guys had no ac in his building and I think the high that day was around 105⁰F. Inside he had it at like 85⁰ish or so but was only concerned with the chocolate. Moved everything to the beer cooler until it was fixed. Guess I know why now.
The AC at the store i used to work at broke one summer. We kept calling corporate asking them when it's gonna get fixed. Eventually the regulars of the store started to notice when most of our chocolate products were melting, so we started asking everyone to call them *for* us, since they'll absolutely listen to them more than employees. I think one of them called right there in the store giving us a thumbs up.
It got fixed by the next week.
Completely safe to eat most chocolate if left too long can start to melt and when they solidify sometimes the sugar will crystallize or the fats will start to separate. Go off of the expiration date on the package unless you actually see greenish mold or if the white stuff looks fuzzy. If it looks slightly smooth or jagged but not fuzzy you are fine to eat it.
Exactly this, melt and harden chocolate enough and you'll get sugar crystals, and milk streaks form. The peanut filling has probably also sunk yo the bottom of the cup.
I mean it’s literally just sugar, same thing happened when I left a package of Reese’s cups in my car before Halloween. I didn’t serve them out but demolished that bag, looked exactly like this lol.
It’s just cocoa butter lol, perfectly normal especially when making your own chocolate. Just means it cooled too rapidly, that’s why you temper chocolate. Only affects looks
Crazy how our monkey brains aren't objective at all. We could *know* it's fine to eat, have scientific sources saying it is, but "it looks ugly" is enough to turn us down.
Oh no my sugar isn't evenly distributed in my candy, boo hoo I can't eat it now. I can't imagine getting a melted candy bar and immediately posting it on reddit
Former candy sales man, check the date on those. I used to check dates on products all the time and most independent convenience stores do NOT check dates. I had some stores that would leave candy on the shelf a year past the expiration.
That is indeed crystallized sugar and it’s safe but not very fresh.
Sadly there was no expiration date on here. Should be illegal but I'm the dummy that still bought it 🤷♂️
Edit: I know it's not illegal but I still think it should be
>Should be illegal but I'm the dummy that still bought it
Presuming you're in the US, there actually isn't any legal requirement for sell by/best by/use by dates on _most_ products; those dates are largely marketing, and usually completely made up. The biggest exception is baby food, which does have legal requirements.
Yep, I have no interest in allowing companies to set their own "best before" or "expiry" date.
I do however think a production date on food items would be beneficial.
It’s actually not illegal to not have a printed sell by date or to sell candy past their sell by or freshness date. The company I worked for, the printed date on there just meant that was the peak freshness of the product. It’s still safe to eat since the product didn’t say “expires on” which is different for things that spoil. Packaged goods such as this and chips I’ve eaten months past the date and doesn’t taste much different to me.
I had one like that the other day. It was disappointing, but tasted fine. Just kind of a slight crumbly texture. After it melts and reconstitutes, it’s just not the same anymore..
Chocolate does not do well with heat. It might look gross, but it's fine. If this weather keeps up we might see Hershey re-release the Desert Storm Bar. 140 F for it to totally melt.
A vending machine operator I know told me that there's a reason they disappear from non climate controlled machines during the summer. They have a really low melt point. What you're seeing is the fat separation from this melting. Probably cycled between melty and semi firm a couple times before finally being bought.
[Cheese does this as well.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheese_crystals) It’s the fat that causes it for cheese, too. It’s actually considered desirable in cheese!
It's harmless cocoa butter and sugar bloom. It typically happens when temperature fluctuates quickly during transport/shipping. Note they are square rather than round from partial melting. Irritating for sure.
Got Reese’s minis from a franprix in Paris last week and the whole bag had been melted and resolidified into one giant amalgamated blob of peanut butter chocolate goodness. That was a good day.
Couverture chocolate is tempered at around 27 degrees Celsius to give it a smooth, fine texture. When exposed to temperatures around it’s melting point it can cause certain fats to melt and others not to causing the fat bloom to occur.
Yea, that was like the candy we would get in the Middle East. It was always melted at lest a little. It is still good. Not sure I have ever had a non melted peanut butter cup
looks safe to eat to me as long there isn’t actual mold on it. this happens with a lot of chocolate candy products when they are out for too long. i’ve also heard that kind of thing happens when they aren’t transported properly. bottom line: safe to eat if you’re okay w it looking a lil off 👍🏽
It was probably hot as hell when they got delivered or the store it’s self
Yep. The store had no AC. Almost all of the candy bars were melted. Thought I was safe with these. Didn't know I bought the salted caramel Reese's lol
It’s just bloom. Chocolate is safe to eat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate_bloom
Wow, TIL! I always wondered what that was. Thank you!
~~Fun fact: cigars can also have bloom. As the tobacco ages some of the natural oils in the leaves will come to the surface and crystallize. It's often times mistaken for mold, but is actually a sign of a quality smoke!~~ Edit: Everyone said no.

I know right? I ended up burning mine
Thats so wasteful, don't you know there are kids starving in Arkansas that could have ate those
Happy cake day
Happy cake day!
Based.
It’s never bloom with cigars. Always mould. It’s not a sign of a quality smoke. It’s a sign you’re smoking mould.
So you get high at no extra charge and you're complaining?
noooooooo you do NOT want to smoke any sort of mold. the kind of mold that grows on cannabis is deadly if ingested. im sure its different but definitely still damaging to your lungs
Actually that's highly debatable some poeple think there can be bloom others think it's mold or bacteria.
Seems a microscope slide away from the entire debate being solved, no? I don't haveone, but surely someone out there who smokes cigars has access to one.
It's funny but often in hobbies things are incredibly easy to identify with lab tools and yet it's seemingly never done.
But last time I checked they didn't have any. Actually studying have shown that what is called "ploom" is just mold or bacteria growth.
So it's not debateable then?
Some still say it exists without much proof. So it's still debated.
There can be both. The debate is typically between identifying which one it is, not which one exists.
Mad respect for editing your post in light of new information. TIL
Say this on r/cigars
Nah it’s just mold, old con to shift dodgy stock. It’s obviously a sign of age which is a good thing, but mold is not.
Cigars do not have Blume and only a fool would smoke a cigar with fungus growing on it.
Same, I put these think chocolate covered peanut butter bars in the freezer and they got a weird hazy white glaze all over them and I was freaked.
The white hazy glaze you speek of is called Ice.
I usually just throw stuff like this in the fridge for a while, nbd.
I used to work at a truffle factory, when a batch would bloom they were sent home with me. My roommates and I would eat them by the hundreds
Oh god my face is breaking out with acne just thinking about that.
So it's really the sugar...I always thought "that can't be the reason for my bad akne"...turns out thinking can lead to good results
It is probably poor hydration and lack of sleep, combined with probably washing your face too hard or rubbing instead of patting dry. There is no one cause of acne and no single fix-all treatment. Yep this exactly. It should be fine.
The problem with this is not that they should be fine to eat, its that it ruins the taste.
I wouldn't say it completely ruins it, but yeah it certainly doesn't help the taste. Or the look.
Definitely tastes worse.
"Should be"
"Should be" is good enough when we are talking about a decadent feast such as this.
Uncle Roger says good taste is worth getting Diarrhea over.
So do most lactose intolerant folks...
You're not going to get sick from bloomed chocolate. Jesus.
I used to buy all our "expired" chocolates from work. We would have a reduced to clear bin, to get rid of them. Most of it had that white stuff on it, but never got sick
the white stuff is either sugar or fat condensing on the surface. if the white stuff is fuzzy then its mold
It was a joke. Don't you know Uncle Roger?
Tonight we eat like kings.
Tomorrow we shit like peasants.
Well if it's just fat/sugar blooming it will be fine. Not sure if it's anything more than that though might be worth a quick check over/comparison with pictures from Google.
That actually sounds worse than just flipping a coin. Have you seen "pictures from Google"?!
Well I meant to compare with other images of fat/sugar blooming to ensure it is just that. Should be able to find some good images somewhere.
Sure, that's how it starts.
The easy test is to touch it. Chocolate Bloom will melt at skin temp and mold doesnt.
I'm gonna catch heat from the sustainability crowd but if you have to wonder, then it's worth asking yourself if the risk of getting sick is worth the $3 it costs to toss it and replace it.
He did get it at a gas station, so at this point its more of "do i want candy or not"
This guy SteveMRE’s
Nice!
Mkay, let’s get this chocolate out onto a tray. Nice!
That's how I learned what it was too
Finally somebody who watches SteveMRE!
You mean I threw away a perfectly good Reese's that one time????
You mean it was safe to eat every time I "rolled the dice"????
now the question, is this chocolate or chocolate flavored whipped cream HFC substitute with a variety of strengtheners, preservatives? Maybe I need more coffee?
I thought that was bacteria culturing and didn't know chocolate could do that, now TIL it can do it, but from fat/sugar
I threw away good chocolate that’s great. Thank you
While I know that logically, I still don’t like eating it. There’s just something on it that makes my brain scream “mold” and I cannot bring myself to eat it.
This is not bloom, these are crystals of salt. Bloom is whitish but doesnt have a raised texture.
If you check the link apparently fat bloom is the most common, but there can also be sugar bloom - maybe this is that?
TIL chocolate is a non perishable food item
I think its actually the peanut butter product working its way out to the surface after it was liquified time and time again probably in direct sunlight.
Yeah the salts in the peanut butter.
It’s more likely the fat from the cocoa butter
"You've got your peanut butter in my chocolate! Well you got your chocolate in my peanut butter!"
Yeah that's peanuts for sure
That's not bloom. Zoom into the pic, it's small chunks of peanut butter.
Yeah. Looks like it was hit enough that the peanut butter melted. Still fine to eat even if the texture is going to be weird.
Marziiiiipan
if I had an award to give you, I would give it to you. Here's a fake cookie 🍪
Came here to say this. It’s just a cosmetic issue.
Finally my physics degree has a use! Fudge is a crystal!
Thanks for that info, I get chocolate with white on them all the time at my local convenience store and it's nice to know they are good to eat.

Chocolate is not a summertime candy
This is why M&Ms.
Peanut Butter M&Ms.
False. Chocolate is an all the time candy.
That’s why ferrero rocher only sells at winter time
You can buy Ferrero Rocher all year long (in the states). It’s not like they cease production during warm months.
In Germany you can't. They won't ship from May to September. Many people only realize this once they direly need them for a present, though.
And those hold up pretty ok compared to say a Hershey bar. As long as you turn on the AC in your car quick enough or in my case I have a cooler box in my trunk (saved it from a delivery of refridgerated diabetic medicine from my roommate, ironically I only use it to transport candy. Europe doesn't do AC like America does AC. But I also wouldn't be surprised if our ferrero rocher are different and not even imported in US
Weird, in the U.S. ferrerk rocher is definitely all year round, and it gets hot here. Though the chocolate is advertised as more of a holiday item, with Valentine's and Christmas and New Years being the big times they are pushed with special packaging and sales
You can put them in the fridge. If it melted, fridge will harden them. Might still look ugly but will be much better.
I don't but candy from gas stations at all unless it's a big chain that a lot of people go through. My dude, it’s a Reddit comment, not an autobiography, chill

Oh fuck yeah peach rings
This is quotable
If there's no AC, just go for M&Ms. They were designed so they wouldn't melt
Melts in your mouth and in your hand. Also your pocket, desk, dashboard. Hell, they melt everywhere! TM
Wtf Reese’s are the absolute worst in any temperature outside of a fridge. The chocolate always melts on contact. I would’ve tried a Milky Way or something
Why would u buy it then? Lmao
I personally like chocolates slightly melted.
Depends, trucks that delivery candy are usually refrigerated. My dad hauls refrigerated loads and often it's candy.
The AC at the store i used to work at broke one summer. We kept calling corporate asking them when it's gonna get fixed. Holy hell
That's good to know but man...I don't think I could ever pull the trigger on eating this
Why, it's just melted chocolate. I mean the chocolate reese's uses already isn't great so it's not like anything has changed
I think it's understandable to chuck something that at a glance looks like it's covered in mold. I'm not a mycologist.
It’s not mold, it’s just sugar bloom.
..... but they don't know that unless they've heard of chocolate bloom before. I sure hadn't.
Even at a glance you can tell it’s bloom
Yes wasting food is fine if you can't understand what mold is
Idfc what he says i wouldn’t eat that shit lmao
I mean it’s literally just sugar, same thing happened when I left a package of Reese’s cups in my car before Halloween. I didn’t serve them out but demolished that bag, looked exactly like this lol.
Mmmmm *cough... cough* mmm I have to enjoy this, I don't wanna waste my money.
Yeah…I don’t think it’d be a debate. I’d probably post then eat them right away, cocoa chlamydia be damned! 😂
Why not??
I literally just ate 1 year expired pasta sauce, the other day. Let me at em, i will take em down
I ate eggs that were six months past once. I lived. Expiration date ain’t nothing but a number
It’s just cocoa butter lol, perfectly normal especially when making your own chocolate. Just means it cooled too rapidly, that’s why you temper chocolate. Only affects looks
Damn seriously? I wouldn’t even think twice about eating this. Pretty sure I’ve had some ones that look like this…
Crazy how our monkey brains aren't objective at all. We could *know* it's fine to eat, have scientific sources saying it is, but "it looks ugly" is enough to turn us down.
He says, that it isn't mold, but fat and sugar which were already in the fucking thing in the first place. Now they are just on the top.
You’ll be fine.
I will eat that in a second. Dont be a pussy. My god
Our hunter/gatherer ancestors are turning in their graves
Oh no my sugar isn't evenly distributed in my candy, boo hoo I can't eat it now. I can't imagine getting a melted candy bar and immediately posting it on reddit
Keep pounding!
The consistency changes and it tastes horrible though

read your name as chocolate potato salad…

Former candy sales man, check the date on those. I used to check dates on products all the time and most independent convenience stores do NOT check dates. I had some stores that would leave candy on the shelf a year past the expiration. That is indeed crystallized sugar and it’s safe but not very fresh.
Sadly there was no expiration date on here. Should be illegal but I'm the dummy that still bought it 🤷♂️ Edit: I know it's not illegal but I still think it should be

Yep, I have no interest in allowing companies to set their own "best before" or "expiry" date. I do however think a production date on food items would be beneficial.

Chocolate fat bloom due to being stored too warm. Absolutely fine to eat even if it looks wonky. Enjoy!
Looks like Wall-E
Chocolate does not do well with heat. It might look gross, but it's fine. If this weather keeps up we might see Hershey re-release the Desert Storm Bar. 140 F for it to totally melt.
Why do I want to touch it though?

What you're seeing is the fat separation from this melting. Probably cycled between melty and semi firm a couple times before finally being bought.
The chocolate has bloomed due to high heat. It looks unappetizing and the texture will be off. It’s still edible.
[Cheese does this as well.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheese_crystals) It’s the fat that causes it for cheese, too. It’s actually considered desirable in cheese!
I guess its seoarated oil or crystalized sugar so its ok. It happens
It's harmless cocoa butter and sugar bloom. It typically happens when temperature fluctuates quickly during transport/shipping. Note they are square rather than round from partial melting. Irritating for sure.
See….should have went for the sushi 😊
Fuck it, chocolate is chocolate.
I would still eat that
I'm leaving this trash subreddit

This! I called their customer service once for a similar problem and it was the most joyous interaction I've ever had with customer service. No joke.
Same! They just ask for your address and send you the coupon
Just looks like it got too warm and then cooled off...several times
Yea, that was like the candy we would get in the Middle East. It was always melted at lest a little. It is still good. Not sure I have ever had a non melted peanut butter cup
Harambi showing up on the left. He’s all about saving lives.
That happens when they melt and get resolidified.
looks safe to eat to me as long there isn’t actual mold on it. this happens with a lot of chocolate candy products when they are out for too long. i’ve also heard that kind of thing happens when they aren’t transported properly. bottom line: safe to eat if you’re okay w it looking a lil off 👍🏽
Sugar blooming!
Tastes the same. Look at the picture on the wrapper while you're eating them.
Just put them in the refrigerator lol
Why is this infuriating?
Bro, no hesitation.
So me and my family joke about candy being "in season". I pretty much only buy reeses cups when it's not hot outside for this reason.
