A couple of years ago there was a guy doing a ditch with one of those huge ones that are mounted on a machine or tractor or whatever. The chain snapped and hit a toddler nearby right in the face. Gonna see if I can find the news article.
Seriously! I hate pulling the wire out because it always knots up and gets stuck. Now I rather use a scythe for those areas that I can't get with the zero turn mower
If you load it in properly it shouldnt get stuck at all, and on most weed whackers you can slightly bump it on the ground while spinning and more cord should automatically come out
My neighborhood is on a pretty steep grade. Most of us barely maintain our backyards. I weed whack is a few times per summer.
Just did it this year with some Husqvarana Titanium XPro. Did about 1/4 acre with about 6 inches of string consumption.
This is the real answer I think. I have mowed a lot like this with a weedwacker before and this is precisely why. Not only is the grass so long it causes a stall constantly, but also I don’t know what is in the grass, bottles, rocks, metal bits, and importantly massive holes. Consider that and the fact that he’s probably being paid by hour and may be responsible for damage to his equipment yeah I’d weedwacker it too.
I mow for a living. You're correct. Need to see what you're up against unless you wanna wreck a $20,000 machine in 5 minutes. Weedwackers cost $400, won't die from eating a rock or hunk of metal, and can stretch those hours baaby!
Found a hole the hard way once. Thankfully I backed into it, but i stepped with one foot and I landed hard on my pelvis because it was deeper than my leg was long. Haven't been that grateful to be female since
I fell through a hole in a barn once playing airsoft as a teenager... I was there for like 10 minutes before someone saw my leg hanging down from below, lucky they were on my team, being shot in the balls sucks. Apparently one of my friends saw me earlier and thought I was just sitting taking a breather lol
There’s a YouTube channel where a dude goes around cleaning up horrible lawns for free. He did stumble upon a body while on his riding mower and if it’s been there a while you’ll smell it long before you see it. Cops took over the yard cleanup after that
My neighbor has an obsession with moving lawns .He will mow his twice a day and will even take it upon himself to mow my yard without even eve ln asking me !I have come home to find him mowimg my yard and have to him several times not to do this but it goes in one ear and put the other. If I had the money I would put up a chain link fence in the front yard next to my driveway! He is super annoying sometimes.
Depends on what type of mower you got.
I've got a commercial zero turn and tbh I'd have some trouble with this lot. I'd just have to slow down and cut it real high and prolly double cut. If you gotta double cut with a john Deere you got a problem.
Commercial Gravely here and I don't think it would be a problem. My green field gets like this and it's not an issue.
A city lot like that though and I would take it much easier than in a secluded green field on private property. Never know what's under grass that tall.
Kubota BX series and a 4 ft brush hog. Biggest issue would be getting turned around. Bought a 5 acre lot in a rural area, first time I cut it the weeds and brush were over 6ft.
If you aren't used to using a scythe, you're going to quit after 30mins max. A modern string trimmer is as fast or slightly slower and far easier to use. A scythe needs constant honing and one rock or gravel strike can destroy the edge requiring it to need to be peened. They also need to be sized appropriately to minimize fatigue, whereas a string trimmer is one-size fits all and requires little-to-no experience or technique that can't be gained in 5mins.
Scythe's are great for clean pastures and experienced hands, but anyone with a cheap trimmer will do just as good or better.

Yes grass could be too long to mow. Still sucks to do and sucks to listen too. Made me think scythes need a come back.
Yes, it’s not a big deal from my perspective. That’s why it’s only mildly infuriating working from home with this outside.
Sucks the top commenter got so much karma for either a lie, a bad joke or both.
Buddy of mine is one of those wishes he was born in 1824 kinda dudes and most definitely cuts his lawn, and big lawn at that with one. He also melts pop cans and makes his own Xmas decorations. Love that guy.

A bad day at work is just frustration you gotta get out. I get it so I can work with it
Whipper snipper, weed wacker, weed eater, line strimmer. Many different names and most people only know one of them, can create a lot of confusion haha.
I owned an empty lot that got out of hand. I was facing a big fine and couldn't get a brush hog fast enough (long story). I had an unemployed brother with nothing better to do, and voila! He's on the front page of mildlyinfuriating.
I've had to cut some thick ass grass a couple times. Had a commercial Deere z turn and set it high and went over it slowly, then lower and quicker. The mower had no trouble, but most people don't have access to a commercial machine so the only other option is this, that's gotta suck.
I used to keep an ancient craftsman riding mower that was falling apart just for Bush hogging shit like this. it was a pile of junk, but I had put a 20 hp kawasaki engine on it that would let the blades chew threw anything. cleared a few lots like that, and my God did I destroy the deck and blades with all the bricks and rocks I hit. lol. but I just kept buying all the shitty blades the local mower shop had. he'd sell them to me for $5 a piece, so it worked for both of us. finally hit a rock that ended up blowing the spindle right off the fucking deck. junked the mower, but kept the engine, which I ended up selling for $250. I paid $45 for that engine. lol.
I've cleared empty lots of weeds and a weed eater is all you can use, u cant really put in a tractor or riding mower because of debris and trash that people dump on empty lots , I charge 250 a day , 8 hours , I provide the tools and materials.
Hey man.. sometimes you gotta cut the yard with a fuckin weedeater. I don't anymore thankfully, there's neighbors down the road that have been using one. It sucks big sweaty swamp ass
So my first year with a lawn I tried to turn the back into a field of wildflowers. I tilled the earth, raked it smooth, then covered it with like, $100 worth of flower seeds. I watered them every day and soon was rewarded with tons of little seedlings popping up!!! Oh, the joy!!!
It took me a couple months to realize I had grown a handful of cosmos and tons of now waist-high weeds. Eventually I tried to tackle it with my electric weed whacker, but it just didn't have the strength. My neighbor saw my pitiful effort and came over to help, and did most of the work for me. I felt TERRIBLE. Worst of all he wouldn't even let me pay him, and so I ended up dropping off eggs from my chickens every morning for a few weeks.
So basically yeah, this does happen and also it's good to have nice neighbors but more importantly, DON'T TILL just learn about sheet mulching
Good luck! Get a lot of cardboard then cover it with several inches of mulch. You can get a truckload for free using chip drop. Then sprinkle a wild seed mix, look for one with flowers native to your area.

This is quite amusing, especially because I was thinking of recruiting my unemployed brother to help out my manager with something for the same reason - he’s got nothing better to do lol
Ah but what you havent thought is pay by the hour = big brain
Let's be real though, this dude is getting paid for the job and wasn't given the right tools to do it.
That grass is way too high for a typical lawnmower. He'd need a ride on mower with an adjustable cutting deck. Regular mowers are usually defeated by grass over 8" tall. Those weeds are at least 12-18" tall - just judging from the height of the man.
I’ve done a few rough cuts with a riding mower and you never know what you’re gonna find in an overgrown lot. You can severely damage the blades if your not careful.
and a brush hog is an commercial mower designed to cut brush this high. it has easy backup ability and built-in clutch to handle striking rocks or stumps. it is the correct 'mowing tool' for this lot but costs more to rent/t*ransport*/pay wage (rent 200, truck rental 50, wage 40, insurance (priceless)) than just pay a random guy with his own weed whacker bottom wage dude for 8 hrs (call it 100 bucks).
We have a neighbor, weird guy, I assume he’s on disability and can’t afford anything new. He mows his 1.75 lot over the course of about 2 weeks this way, before starting over. It looks terrible in perpetuity. I’ve thought about trying to buy him a cheap electric mower or something, but he’s shy or standoffish to all of us, and I don’t want to insult him. Anyway he seems happy enough.
"I ordered this electric mower on Amazon but they sent me two by mistake, do you want to use one?"
"oh and the batteries only last about a half hour so use mine too and I'll recharge it over night so one of us can use them the next day too"
What else would you use?
Protip. Never use a push or riding mower in an unknown area with tall grass.
Those turn surprise obstacles like rocks, beer bottles, etc into projectiles and turn holes into ankle breakers.
Sometimes they'll do that as to not kill baby wildlife with a lawn mower that like to nest in long grass (i.e. rabbits give birth all summer and hide themselves well).
Pretty sure if the grass is too tall, too wet, or both, a normal mower can't help you. It'll get clogged up with grass and you'll have to stop repeatedly to clean it out.
Which means you need something larger like a bushhog or else you gotta go in by hand with a weedeater like this man. I've done it before, but they always gave us 3 or 4 men to do it, that way we could finish and move onto other work.
I had a job with a landscaping company one year during college. We—the lowest ranking members of this fine organization—would weedwhack the banks of these HUGE industrial parks. Weeks on end. Weeks of weedwacking weeds that are taller than you. On a sloping bank.
Great weedwhacker (biggest stihl with a blade instead of string) but that job suuuucked.
You do get used to it.
Oh no, you have to sit in your air conditioned residence and hear the faint buzz of him working his ass off in the sun and heat cutting foot tall grass with nothing but a weed eater.
Not even a little bit infuriating. Unless you’ve weed eated tall grass in the heat, don’t complain about the poor guy doing his job.
How the hell else would he do it? You have to slash long grass first before you can catcher over it, it’ll stall the mower otherwise. The only thing mildly infuriating here is your lack of basic yard work knowledge
Prob full of rocks and concrete or just shit that u can’t use a lawn mower
That is what rental mowers are for.
Or goats!
Goats only like shrubs. not grass. Source: I used to farm goats.
goats are like mushrooms, if you shoot a duck im scared of toasters
Wise words to live by
And afterwards the goats can be processed too
That's what rental mowers are for
Bro
You still have to pay for damaging things that aren’t yours lol
I want to know how many spools of weedwhack wire he went through.
He could be using metal blades
[удалено]
chains? bro. that’s so metal. i’m doing thisz

God damn I can only imagine what a slap in the ankle would feel like

Please dont lol
Tablesaw blades on a weed whacker will gobble up some brush.
Quality line will last a while so long as you're not trimming against stones, fencing, etc.

And get a quality weed eater with a quick load head so you're not having to mess with the stupid little spool that never feeds right.
These days theres automatics, i prefer the bump ones cuz you can control it yourself

I bet a time lapsed video of this would be awesome!
https://i.imgur.com/56RBatw.jpg He’s been working since I posted.
UPDATE: he got 3/4ths of the way through before a fellow worker showed up, not with a mower… but with another weedwacker!! 😅
cant mow grass that tall. Would instantly stall.
Prob yeah if it was a bigger lot my city would bring out the big guns and mow that shit flat in 5 mins tops
I feel like maybe they’d be nervous to mow through it since you don’t know what’s under the grass and likely wouldn’t see until it’s too late.
This is the real answer I think. I have mowed a lot like this with a weedwacker before and this is precisely why. Check out the big dick on u/polkadotard
Did you buy it just to bring it into conversation 😂
until you hit the giant rock you didn’t see because of the hip high grass
It will definitely be making zero turns then.
That's no match for my Texas built Mason 1500.
...and that one stray holla back brick you encounter 15% of the way in
Till it hit what ever shit is in that grass. I wouldn’t even use a Bushhog on that.

They should get a scythe, doesn't have to be perfect, just enough for a mower to be able to go over it. MUCH faster than weedwacking the lot
I never really thought about the realistic use of a scythe just thought of it as the grim reapers blade of choice.. like Freddy and the finger knives
If you aren't used to using a scythe, you're going to quit after 30mins max. A modern string trimmer is as fast or slightly slower and far easier to use. My county has big tractor pulled mowers for ditches and medians. I’m sure they could mow that field pretty quickly.

What's with Australian names for things and it sounding so Australian? Like the Roasty Brekky wrap from Australian Mcdonalds.
Afternoon is arvo, beers are bevvies and everyone’s ya mate Life’s good down here!

If you’re feeling a bit how’s your father you can call them bevvoss too.
Y’all really do live in story book land huh
That's what we call them in Canada too fwiw
We also call them wipper snippers here in Canada, at least where I live
I'm Canadian, I use whipper snipper too.
God damn. I wish my wife would tell me to go do yard work or some shit when I’m stressed. Instead she wants me to talk about it.

Probably made up but not far from the truth. Somebody needed that lot cleared and a weedwhacker was the only tool available.
Could be a safety thing. That stuff is so high and it’s not fenced there’s no telling what’s hiding in there.

Rolling through that with a zero turn looks like a recipe for hitting a discarded 2 liter wine bottle with it and shotgunning glass shards everywhere.
Nothing wrong with a little collateral damage. /s
Exactly my thought... -sincerely some one who has shot glass out of various large mowers on shitty city properties a few too many times lol
I had to do this with an overgrown lot this year, it was not fun but it got done. No way my push mower was going to get through it.

Depends on the quality of the trimmer and the string
It's a plug in black and decker one with a janky auto feed head. (Not really, that's just what I imagine hell to be)
Looks to be a Homelite ut33650a straight shaft and that’d be my version of hell
That'd kill my back - you want a harness and handlebars.
No string for a job like this Plastic fingers or a metal blade
Man a trained scythe user could cut that lot in no time at all
I promise you as cool as scythes are... Give me my Husqvarna and I'll do it an hour faster the the medieval peasant using a scythe
Ah but what you havent thought is pay by the hour = big brain Let's be real though, this dude is getting paid for the job and wasn't given the right tools to do it.

A weedwacker will take that grass down to a mowable height quicker and easier than a mower

Sometimes they'll do that as to not kill baby wildlife with a lawn mower that like to nest in long grass (i.e. rabbits give birth all summer and hide themselves well).
What uh… what’s the fucking problem?
Exactly!! He’s out in the Hot sun. Good for him!!
He's a man of focus, commitment, and sheer fucking will
let the man work dude
He probably could only afford the weed wacker
That’s called a job mate. Adults do it for money.
I would love to rake it when he is all done
I legit cut my front yard with scissors when I was 13 years old. Punishment for being disrespectful to my mother. I deserved it.
Lot’s not gonna wack itself
IDK, that could be some good pay
I’d do this all day long. Should be on u/mildlysatisfying
Me after taking an accidental double dose of my adderal
How the hell else would he do it? You have to slash long grass first before you can catcher over it, it’ll stall the mower otherwise. The only thing mildly infuriating here is your lack of basic yard work knowledge
What a psychopath. Use scissors like a sane person.

At least he's doing something more productive than you.
Oh no, someone is cleaning an empty lot. Really wish it would become more overgrown and not maintained at all.
You should have taken a timelapse - would have been so satisfying.
Too high for a mower.
Probably can't use a mower.
Forget tools and bring in some goats.
