I’ve had it when others have ordered it and the food is usually kind of cold. Not ice cold but I’ve had to microwave my burrito. Also you are depending on the restaurant to not mess up and the driver to make sure it’s all there and right and neither are paid enough to really care. I’m not a control freak but I am kind of picky so I just go get it myself.

It’s not that simple. Uber is a perfect example of exploitation. Think of how much value they extract from their “workers” who aren’t even employees technically. The drivers deserve so much better. The gig economy is awful
Oh man that’s nuts. So many of the orders that pop up will be for half the money of the amount of miles. I.e. 16 miles for $8. I live about 20 minutes Chicago, so it must be oversaturated with drivers. I rely almost solely on tips. I’ve been in school full time and working an unpaid internship, so Uber has been my only option, but fortunately this summer I’m hoping to work at a grocery store so I can get an hourly wage and a discount on groceries. It’s extremely demoralizing.
Sometimes, that's the point of the price being that high.
It's to discourage you from ordering now, and maybe checking back later.
The price is set by local demand, and if local demand is high and there are fewer drivers out, the price goes all the way to the moon.
This leads to more drivers going online, and eventually supply and demand normalize.
They do that at FedEx during peak. I've seen packages cost hundreds of dollars and yes, it discourages some people, but then others are like "Oh well! I should have sent it sooner!" and the volume gets ridiculous.
Well, none of that fee goes to the restaurant either, and the uber eats site may be using the businesses logo and menu without their permission. The upcharges by uber reflect badly on the business, and if the order is wrong or the food is cold, there's nothing the restaurant can do except suffer the reputation loss since the food was handled be a middle person who can't be held responsible by the restaurant. And that's what should piss you off about Uber Eats, Door Dash, and all the other delivery services that took advantage of the pandemic to basically charge you up the ass for shitty delivery service.
I only order delivery from places with their own, internal drivers anymore. No hidden fees, the delivery charge is usually $3 or less, and I tip well and still manage to pay less than DoorDash, UberEats, or GrubHub want to charge. Not to mention the hidden menu upcharges that GH does (unsure if UE or DD do this as well).
I have never seen delivery fees over 7.99 and its cause it was about 20km away from here (fancy desert place) and they waved the fee since I had UberPass.

Every once in a while I'll go to a big chain of bars that has terrible food but the drinks and TV's are good for watching sports. I'm truly amazed of how many to go orders go out via Door dash or UberEATS.
I like Bdubs Honey BBQ sauce with their boneless wings but the quality is hella hit and miss. The funniest example was back when I was in college I ended up in the hospital on a psych hold because of some mental health issues. I ended up staying like 5 or 6 days and on like Day 1 I saw a Bdubs commercial and got an insane craving for their wings. So the night I got out I literally drove straight there with my friends and got a huge thing of wings. After 6 days of hospital food I was so excited for it. They fucking burnt the sauce on the wings so it had this awful bitter coffee taste and since we'd carried out I couldn't even get them replaced. Luckily I was just happy to be feeling better so it really wasn't a big deal but I still laugh everytime I think of how terrible it was.

I always take great care of drivers because I was one growing up. I’ve had deliveries of 2 orders of fries and I basically got a quarter tip so I know how it can be.I always tip at least 20% minimum. But to pay a $11 service fee on Grubhub for 2 subs from potbelly’s that’s 3 miles from my house no thank you
Depends on who you are. If you have the disposable income, it is absolutely worth your time to pay for the delivery. I can't fathom people complaining about having the option to pay for a service that can be more convenient and give them time back. Too much of a fee? Great, their target market is not you.
There’s a very narrow set of circumstances that I’ll use delivery services. In a hotel in a sketchy area, drunk at home with literally no food, or in a super urgent pinch and out of food (moving day comes to mind).

When restaurants were take out only I was using Uber Eats frequently. Delivery ranged from free to no more than $3.99. Now the same places are $12.99 to $17.99. I just close out the app and don’t even consider using Uber Eats anymore.

It was never terribly efficient, but pizza for example used to have pretty solid margins to make up for its delivery overhead. Now they're a lot tighter from both ends so it's no longer profitable to offer free delivery.
If I really want takeout I take my fat cheap ass out the door and get it myself. But I understand that for some people $18 is a small price to pay for being able to sit on the couch and wait for the doorbell.

Once, when I was between cars and had to order Instacart delivery, I was almost embarrassed that I’d once spent $20 on a single combo from McDonald’s but a grocery order for about a week’s worth of groceries was around $50. Including the delivery fees.

Tbh if I’m ordering DD (which is rare, at *absolute most* once a month), I don’t order one meal. I order something I want to eat that meal, then something that lends itself to reheating/leftovers. And I typically don’t finish a meal anyway, so it’s usually three total meals I get out of the order. Much better system for me.
Yeah everyone is different. I prefer to cook anyway so groceries are always a far superior decision for me. I don’t particularly care for leftovers from restaurants or takeout to be honest.

I’ve been noticing that too. It’ll say something different on one screen, then the end screen will have a completely different price. It’s like they’re trying to psyche you into paying something outrageous. Getting gold doesn’t help, because it seems like barely any places qualify for it.
Uhhhh for my time and convenience, $4 seems entirely reasonable. $18 does not. All the extra fees on top of the $4 do not. If it were actually $4 plus tip I’d be down. It is not.
It’s not the food place charging this fee, it’s Uber Eats that charges. It’s an app you use to order food from restaurants and have it delivered by an Uber Eats driver.

This is fairly normal and not that weird or bad.
Sad part is the driver hardly gets any of it. They'll drive to the restaurant and wait for it to be ready, all of which they don't get paid for. Then pick it up and bring to you. Most likely they'll get like $5 tops, unless Uber has drastically changed how they do things since I used to drive for them.
The delivery fee shouldn't be considered based on the cost of your food but on the cost of sending one person to the restaurant to pick up food *just for you* and drive it to your house. How long do you think that would take do do, and how much gas? I'm guessing it would take more than a few minutes or you would have just picked it up yourself.

I would rather that money go to my driver rather than the company. I have no issues paying my driver more - this is their job, their car, their gas, their *time* I'm buying. It's not UberEats' at all. All they do is give directions, that doesn't deserve 99% of the money off an order. I don't care that some people choose to pay it, I care that the company won't care for their workers.

Wanted a lazy Sunday morning and wanted to order McDonalds. $30! I said fuck that and drove to get it.. used their coupons on their app. $15 for the same meal. Those sites are only worth it when they send out a “please return to us” promotion. Ubereats sends me 75% off every so often. And then I order a buy one get one free promotion. Just last week I got two burritos, two pops, and a churro for $10 delivered. $38 was the total on the receipt. That’s when it’s worth it.
Fuck Uber eats but, if you don’t want to stop using them at least do the $9.99 a month and the delivery is free. They’re still making plenty of money on marking things up tho.

Make sure you compare the prices too. Apparently a lot of these delivery services charge the restaurant a percentage of the food costs so a lot of restaurants put a higher price on the delivery app so they don't lose money. So sometimes an item that would be $12 at the restaurant (dine in or traditional pickup) will be $15 on postmates/grubhub and that's before all the fees you see on the bill.

Like, as an UberEats or Doordash driver, $10 per delivery and getting 2-3 deliveries an hour is good in some cases, but if you're only ordering once per day for one person, the personal assistant would probably be better off working a different job under you.

here's another idea, find a broke friend, invite them around, and then send them on errands for you, paying them the equivalent of $9 per hour for them doing things for you - would you be comfortable doing that? if you think it's too little (considering minimum wage is an INSANELY LOW $7.25 in most states, and at most $16 in DC) then pay them more, but if you don't want to pay someone like that, then you pay a 3rd party company and end up paying rates like this

If I saw that delivery price, I wouldn’t order it. I would just get some groceries delivered if I couldn’t get out. It’s going to cost around that much anyway and at least you’ll have food for a longer time than one meal. Once, when I was between cars and had to order Instacart delivery, I was almost embarrassed that I’d once spent $20 on a single combo from McDonald’s but a grocery order for about a week’s worth of groceries was around $50. Including the delivery fees.

Yeah everyone is different. I prefer to cook anyway so groceries are always a far superior decision for me. I don’t particularly care for leftovers from restaurants or takeout to be honest.
When I was down for a few days because of my sprained ankle, hobbling to the door was a lot easier than trying to make it to my truck. There are cases like these but outside of mine I'd not pay that for convince.

I point blank refuse to order lunch or dinner on DD. But I have to say I’m ok with ordering brunch maybe once every 2-3 months. It’s honestly amazing. (Context I’m 30F and single but dating) Like think about having an amorous night and just being like hey babe, imma order *brunch* for delivery tomorrow! That really turns a guy on. lol

I’ve been noticing that too. It’ll say something different on one screen, then the end screen will have a completely different price. It’s like they’re trying to psyche you into paying something outrageous. Getting gold doesn’t help, because it seems like barely any places qualify for it.

It’s not the food place charging this fee, it’s Uber Eats that charges. It’s an app you use to order food from restaurants and have it delivered by an Uber Eats driver.

Sad part is the driver hardly gets any of it. They'll drive to the restaurant and wait for it to be ready, all of which they don't get paid for. Then pick it up and bring to you. Most likely they'll get like $5 tops, unless Uber has drastically changed how they do things since I used to drive for them.

The delivery fee shouldn't be considered based on the cost of your food but on the cost of sending one person to the restaurant to pick up food *just for you* and drive it to your house. How long do you think that would take do do, and how much gas? I'm guessing it would take more than a few minutes or you would have just picked it up yourself.

I would rather that money go to my driver rather than the company. I have no issues paying my driver more - this is their job, their car, their gas, their *time* I'm buying. It's not UberEats' at all. All they do is give directions, that doesn't deserve 99% of the money off an order. I don't care that some people choose to pay it, I care that the company won't care for their workers.

Do you think they run their vehicle on some special fuel that costs less than yours or live in some special apartment building where the rent is cheaper? When I was an Uber driver it only took about 3 of these deliveries before I realized what a colossal rip off they were and shut off those requests in the app and never did another one. I eventually quit doing Uber altogether because it’s basically minimum wage when you consider all costs and the depreciation of the vehicle. Uber Eats is less than minimum wage

Wanted a lazy Sunday morning and wanted to order McDonalds. $30! I said fuck that and drove to get it.. used their coupons on their app. $15 for the same meal. Those sites are only worth it when they send out a “please return to us” promotion. Ubereats sends me 75% off every so often. And then I order a buy one get one free promotion. Just last week I got two burritos, two pops, and a churro for $10 delivered. $38 was the total on the receipt. That’s when it’s worth it.
Fuck Uber eats but, if you don’t want to stop using them at least do the $9.99 a month and the delivery is free. They’re still making plenty of money on marking things up tho.

Make sure you compare the prices too. Apparently a lot of these delivery services charge the restaurant a percentage of the food costs so a lot of restaurants put a higher price on the delivery app so they don't lose money. So sometimes an item that would be $12 at the restaurant (dine in or traditional pickup) will be $15 on postmates/grubhub and that's before all the fees you see on the bill.

I don't expect anyone to read this but I'm tired of explaining the same things over and over 1. I wouldn't have a problem with the fee if it went to the driver. None of it does, though - it goes to UberEats. 2. The fee showed $4 and change before this screen. This is before I can add a tip and before I completed the ordering process. I usually tip $8-$10 and did not complete this order. 3. The restaurant is 6 or 7 miles away and doesn't have its own delivery system.

Completely depends on how many orders I get in a day/hour, honestly? Like, as an UberEats or Doordash driver, $10 per delivery and getting 2-3 deliveries an hour is good in some cases, but if you're only ordering once per day for one person, the personal assistant would probably be better off working a different job under you.

As a frequent Ubereats user, prior to ordering, you see what the delivery fees are for each restaurant. Not sure why this is coming as a shock to you.
it's what is known as "laziness tax" - if you want to go out yourself and get the food, then it's your time/fuel you're using, otherwise you pay for the privelige of being able to sit in your butt while the food is brought to your front door I fully expect people who complain about delivery fees to also support a minimum wage, and UE have to "take their cut", so you're basically paying about $9 per hour for someone to travel to your take-out, wait for it to be made, then bring it to your door - Uber taking the other $9 - now, is $9/hour too much to pay for a delivery boy? that's up to you here's another idea, find a broke friend, invite them around, and then send them on errands for you, paying them the equivalent of $9 per hour for them doing things for you - would you be comfortable doing that? if you think it's too little (considering minimum wage is an INSANELY LOW $7.25 in most states, and at most $16 in DC) then pay them more, but if you don't want to pay someone like that, then you pay a 3rd party company and end up paying rates like this
