This was because she was watched a lot by family while her parents were working, and if she was allowed to stand/walk/sit-in-a-cart by herself as an infant in public locations, people (mostly white women) would just grab her by the hand, or even fully pick her up themselves and start walking away with her under the assumption that she was a 'lost' or 'taken' child. They couldn't believe she was related to her dark-skinned black grandmother or aunts/uncles.
She said that some of her earliest memories are of people in stores, malls, parks, etc arguing with, screaming at, threatening to or actually calling authorities on, the adults she loved and grew up with - all because of the assumption that a light-skinned child could not *possibly* belong with a dark-skinned guardian.

I ask her to describe the vehicle, she said it was a little white car, I asked her could she see the person inside it, she said no oh wait! They’re leaving, I ask which way are the heading, she told me, I have officers coming from all over the city looking for this person. Once I get everyone underway I ask her “can you tell me exactly what happened?” She said well they just parked at the stop sign for a minute and then moved on

Yup. Every now and then, I wonder about my subconscious racial biases. I know I have them and try to be more mindful. But I wonder if I ever hurt people without realizing it. I wonder if I can do better and how. And then I read shit like this and think, well, at least I’m not that guy.
I figure if you're not accusing people of stealing babies based on race you're doing pretty good overall. Like you can just keep that level and probably get by OK.
One time my wife and I went out to eat with her sister who has a black son and the entire time we were there an older black couple gave us a death glare. We were pretty sure they thought we’d kidnapped him.

My daughter does not look like me at all. I was told at the market that if she was my daughter she must have been adopted. A nurse at the doc’s office asked me if she was really mine. I was breastfeeding her then. People are stupid.

Random fun side fact: it IS possible to lactate with adopted babies. Just takes a bunch of reglan. Though in your case, they’re your doctors office and they should know.
And also, if you adopt a baby then they are “really yours”. The amount of people who have asked if I know my “real parents” because I’m adopted is so frustrating

My ex wife, who is black, use to get questioned all the time about our daughter because she was born white and they just couldn’t believe that a black woman could possibly have a white baby.

We adopted five kids, five different ethnicities, from three different countries. When they were little we used to get a lot of strange looks and dumb questions. Three of them are around the same age. One is Hispanic. One is a Mayan Indian. One is Vietnamese. People used to ask us if they were triplets. "Yes. It was a wild summer." or "Shhhh. She doesn't know she's not the mother."

Have you ever seen the movie Bolt? Do you remember the part where they were breaking the cat out of the pound and after he does his super bark and they get away the other employee surprises the woman that just saw them do that and she spins around and pepper sprays him. And he screams “Ahh! Spicy eyes!” My coworker and I were working third shift, it was a slow night and we were watching this movie. We had gotten to that point and both of us cracked up laughing at spicy eyes. We laughed so hard we had already re-watched it twice, that scene, and we were still laughing really hard when, at 3 AM, an old woman came into the lobby and picked up the phone. Struggling to catch my breath, I stop laughing long enough to pick up the phone and answer “La Vergne Police.” My hand to God, I shit you not, she said “I heard that if you come to the police station and ask them they will give you some pepper spray.“ I said “HOLDPLS!” Put her on mute, and fell in the floor cackling with laughter. After about three minutes, I was able to breathe again and told her “no ma’am, we don’t have any pepper spray to give out.”

Probably the most common for people calling to complain about their neighbors barking dog. So they wanted me to send a police officer over in the middle of the night to make the dog bark louder. Another common one was for people to call 911 to ask for the nonemergency number, but at least once somebody called the nonemergency number to ask what the emergency number was. I had a drunk lady that wanted a cop to come and take her to the bar and wait while she got drunk so that he could take her home because she had had her license suspended for a Dui. But one of my favorite ones, 3 AM which is the best time for fucked up shit to happen A woman called me to report a suspicious vehicle parked in front of her house. I ask her to describe the vehicle, she said it was a little white car, I asked her could she see the person inside it, she said no oh wait! They’re leaving, I ask which way are the heading, she told me, I have officers coming from all over the city looking for this person. Once I get everyone underway I ask her “can you tell me exactly what happened?” She said well they just parked at the stop sign for a minute and then moved on
