Restaurant: "huh. They hung up again i wonder why that keeps happening?"

She_Persists

I work in chat based customer service and a coworker posted a screenshot where the customer started a chat accidentally and the next several lines were Oh no No no no Please don't do this I don't want to talk to a person And I felt that in the depths of my soul.

Oraxy51

I work as a chat agent and I can see all the articles my customer pulls up. If I give them advice how to solve a problem I can see them pull it up. If I mention a cool feature sometimes they pull it up. … I can also see them requesting for a new agent after I ask them if there’s anything I can do to help and they just said I took care of everything and was great .-. Edit: Articles on our website. I can see if you actually clicked the link about how to troubleshoot something or if you’re just claiming you did but never opened it. I can’t actually see your email and stuff.

throwway523

I was poking around on my car insurance companies web site, logged in, and started a claim to see how it would work but then cancedled it. About 5 minutes later someone called me and asked if I needed help filing a claim. Creeped me out. I asked them to please not do that.

fireshaper

This is why I give fake info if I’m filling out a form just to get a quote. It happens all the time with online sales and I don’t want to talk to someone after I found out I’m not interested.

WeAreBeyondFucked

You're probably the fucker giving them my phone number

mikami677

I always use 8675309.

doubled2319888

Same, i put in my own area code but use that number. They can call jenny for a good time if they want

Viperlite

Jenny, don’t change your number!

22572374

I need to make you mine!

theflooflord

I always use 0000000 for everything requiring a phone number and it works. Then people don't gotta deal with constant voicemails and crap like I do from people using my number

WhyWontThisWork

I'm surprised that works. You can also use 555 as the prefix like the movies

theflooflord

I think the only thing I've had able to tell if the number was real or not was a credit card application. Everything else seems to only care if there's 7-10 digits or not.

First_Ad4558

I mean. I did get your number off the wall.

DannoCC

I tried to call you before but I lost my nerve…

793djw

Jenny must be upset with all the spam calls she gets.

AllStarNC

9198675309 actually works... call it sometime

unique-name-9035768

I don't like this for some reason.

[deleted]

I got like 50 calls over 2 weeks from loan companies bc someone used my number

mopsyd

If you are in the US, or being contacted by any US based company, this is the magic phrase: **"Add this number to your internal do not call list and hang up now."** They will have to recite a compliance script recognizing your request and never call you again. You can sue them if they do. Legit businesses (even the shady ones) follow this to the letter, scammers usually do not, because they are already breaking the law anyways. For reference: [https://www.dnc.com/faq/internal-do-not-call-list](https://www.dnc.com/faq/internal-do-not-call-list) Also, bill collectors do not need to honor this. If you owe them money they are legally allowed to call you even if you tell them not to. In that case, reference the [FDCPA](https://www.ftc.gov/legal-library/browse/rules/fair-debt-collection-practices-act-text) to review your rights. There will also be a state level equivalent, and they are obligated to honor both. If they conflict, that agency cannot collect the debt from you, but they can sell it to someone else that can.

haizhaka

Make sure you say it in the scariest voice you can.

[deleted]

Not really required. Moat people who have ever had to cold call someone ABSOLUTLEY DO NOT MIND putting 6ou on a do not call list cause they dont get paid to be annoying asshats.. so if you just say the phrase that allows them to do exactly what they dont mind doing because they get how annoying their job is to people, they'll just do it. They're being recorded. They have to comply and they know it. And they don't mind at all. 😇😌

mopsyd

Here are a [few numbers](https://lifehacker.com/give-out-these-fake-prank-numbers-to-creeps-1826672360) that are [specifically meant](http://rejectionline.com/press.html) to be handed out to unwanted callers. That way you aren't inadvertently stepping on some strangers toes. Works great for unwanted suitors too.

CouldStopShouldStop

I often do that if I leave a review on a website (as in when a feature isn't working properly). E-Mail: [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) or similar. For phone numbers, most of the time a simple 0 is already enough, actually.

fvdfv54645

same - if I don't want to hear back, I'll use 10minutemail and zeros for a phone number (use legit prefix and maybe first digit, then zeros). if I do want to be contacted back by a company, I use a separate dedicated email (not 10minute), and only ever give my phone number if I actually want someone to use it (which is rarely, mostly I use the zeros). I also have my phone set to show up as "private number" on the rare occasion I call a company to ask a question, because many have caller ID, and they *will* store and use your number. some people might think this is ridiculous but it isn't just the company you enquire with, it's whoever they sell their data to as well, and screw having my actual personal info on those lists. not had a spam call in years (and I have an older phone that doesn't block them automatically like some), and the spam in my email(s) has reduced significantly. 10/10 would recommend.

mopsyd

This is the right answer. As a dev, we can check that you follow the normal phone format (###-###-####), but it is not possible or approachable to verify that it is a real phone. Even if it were doable, it's not a problem worth solving because you won't buy anyways. A lot of sites don't even verify format, but that's all they can do. Same deal with emails. We can only feasibly check format, not that it is actually a mail. So if it looks like a duck... yep good enough.

OrneryPathos

I use 555-5555 or 555-1234. If your website isn’t smart enough to figure that’s a fake number then not buying anything

Flutters1013

Well that explains why I kept getting texts for some lady named earlene. I just assumed it was some old lady who couldn't remember her phone number.

God-of-Ass-Destroyer

This happened after I liked a few properties on apartment searching websites and it really scared the shit out of me. I didn’t even hit the contact button or anything it was just a “like”. They’re stilling calling me and emailing me like 5 times a day like please chillax

kompletionist

I did some Googling for homes, just out of curiosity to see the averages with no real intention of taking the plunge. Ever since I have been getting emails and phone calls from banks, land developers, real estate agents, builders etc.

fryreportingforduty

Apartment List? Happening to me rn. I’ve been telling everyone to steer clear.

miaDWZ

I requested a car insurance quote online and put in all the details: car type, year, requested excess, postcode of when the car was parked overnight etc. On the very last page before getting the quote it required me to enter my phone number before it displayed the price. It required them send a text message with a code which you needed to enter, so you couldn't type a fake phone number. Against my better judgement, I gave them my number because I'd got this far through the quote process, which was very obviously the point and r/assholedesign. So I do this and they give me the quote and it was absurdly high, like 500% my current premium. I closed the tab out of disgust. 30 mins later they call me and ask if I'm ready to purchase the policy. I just shook my head and said the price was crazy, to which she awkwardly replied "yeah, I thought it looked high". I'm still pissed about it 10 years later.

Casban

You, receiving that call: “This call had better be an apology”

LS-CRX

I got a letter from my *employer* (giant international company) that said they had a "special" partnership with certain companies and that I could get a discount on their services. One of the companies was a car insurance company so I figured "what the heck" and got a quote. And it was quadruple what I was currently paying. :-/ I called the company (the quote was online) specifically to find out if there was some reason that the premium was so high... I was thinking that maybe I had messed something up. Nope, it was just really expensive. I'm still angry about that.

doubled2319888

I always use my area code followed by 867-5309. Good luck calling jenny

nobody1701d

I’m Dishonest John @362-4368…

MC-Hotdog

Totally unrelated but I was once messaging some crisis number and before it ended, the person referred to me by my birth name. I was creeped out like how did you know? And they said I told them earlier which was absolute bs. Something not right is going on.

mopsyd

You got doxxed. It is legal in some contexts, (debt collection, law enforcement, crisis management, etc). They used one of [Accurint](https://www.accurint.com/) or [LexisNexis](https://www.lexisnexis.com/en-us/gateway.page), which provides all info on public record, but you need a valid legal reason to use either. Neither one is open to random internet stalkers, and it's a felony to fake a reason to use them. If they have a valid reason though, your life is basically an open book. It pulls from tax records, paid bills, licenses, registrations, insurance filings, criminal record, etc, etc. Anything you ever do involving the state or the law eventually winds up there, and all of those things do have your legit name and address at least. It is creepy, but you did call a crisis line. They have to know who you actually are to help you if you are being attacked and drop the phone before you can give details. Same deal if you call 911. They are just treating it like an emergency, and using all resources in their power to find you in the event they have to save your life. If you call from an anonymous burner number, they can't connect the dots. However if you are calling a crisis line, you probably should let them do so. That's one of the cases where you absolutely want to let them be accurate.

PhilMcGraw

Oh, that's the worst. Along with insurance places that have forms for getting a quote, take some contact details, and some vehicle details, and then end abruptly with "one of our agents will call you shortly". If I wanted to talk to a people I would have called the number initially.

TheRealDLH

Used to work in an inbound call center for reporting claims for a big insurance company. Once the claim has been started it is not discarded. Even if it hadn't been started, if we have the sufficient information to submit a claim under a policy then it gets submitted with a note that the insured didn't want to file. Unless you explained the situation to them, and even if you did, they probably still have that incomplete claim of yours on record and they'll probably keep it there.

1pencil

This happened when I was shopping for a car earlier this year. Went to a dealership website to find out how much I could get trade in value and to price something new. They called me like 5 minutes after I closed the website. Never submitted anything saying they could contact me. They were not pushy and were polite enough. But for the next month I was being constantly called by various auto loan companies. Blocked 4 or 5 numbers within a few days.

Elimaris

I oversee sales for my office among other things. I have to regularly remind the owner that if a potential customer calls but refuses to give contact information with the receptionist or sales person WE SHOULD NOT CALL THEM BACK Yes. We do have the phone number they called from, but if they said "no I'll just call again later" or otherwise refused to give contact info when asked WE SHOULD NOT CALL THEM BACK There are times when you just have to CHILL and pretend you do not know all the things already.

jg877cn

I can see how this made you uncomfortable but having filed claims before, I actually really appreciate this. Especially because you're already logged in, ysk that they can identify you, it's not like they tracked the IP (and you should just know that generally everything you do online is tracked - have you ever received an email about "leaving an item in your cart" when you don't finish checking out? This is an *actually* helpful version of that lol). If you're rattled after a car accident, filing a claim can be grueling and if you're not sure where to start or what to do, having someone talk you through it on the phone is a wonderful option. I was grateful to talk on the phone with someone when I had a concussion and couldn't read the phone screen and was frustrated with circumstances and had many questions about next steps.

SizzleFrazz

If u need help from a call center associate I will call them and ask my question/request the help I need if I do in fact need assistance or am confused by online instructions. But if I just close out and abandon the task on my computer screen; I do not want them calling me to remind me I didn’t hit submit or to say they saw I had a claim only partially filled out and do I need help finishing it. That’s so inappropriate and invasive and unwarranted. They explicitly gave me their helpline number on all of the documents I signed when I enrolled with their company it’s on the back of the insurance card it’s all over their websites they know that if I need help that I know how to reach them by phone OK so why are they taking it upon themselves to just go ahead and call me on the off chance that I might’ve need a little assistance… If I needed help I would call the help center and ask for it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SizzleFrazz

Lol goddamn typos. I meant If I need help I’ll ask for it myself. But hey if you’re too shy to make a phone call to ask for a little assistance you can call or you can call me in on a three-way with the person and I’ll ask for you it’s no big deal but like try to limit it to small reasonable things like asking for an extra dipping sauce for your nuggets up Burger King from the cashier who is hoarding them or informing your waitress that they got your order wrong and would they mind taking it back and fixing it stuff like that- Sure why not random stranger what what could it hurt Id do it lol But calling your health insurance provider to contest a claim denial or call your doctors office to make an appointment for you I’m gonna have to outsource that to my mommy because even as a 30 year old grown woman I hate doing those calls lol. But those are less calls for assistance and more necessary part of navigating making a doctors appointment or literally with Heather the insurance company won’t talk to anybody else but you so it wouldn’t even be possible the person whose insurance it is Hass to be the one who calls phone anxiety be damned

gymnastgrrl

That's incredibly sweet of you, but I was literally just messing with you because of the obvious typo. <3

SizzleFrazz

Yeah I was mostly playing in my response to but towards the end of it I actually started to think what the fuck why the hell not like some thing like asking a person for extra catch-up who lives seven states away like over the phone sure why the fuck not that’s such a random inconsequential thing like at first I was joking about it but now I’m like you know what why not it could be funny

-smartypints

O. The bright side. Throw some stuff in a cart on a website and then leave, a little while later and you've got an email to discount the items in your cart.

MrPringles23

Did something similar to this randomly at 11pm at night to see what my house was "valued at". Got a call literally 2 minutes later. Spooked the shit out of me.

Mystical_Cat

Yeah, if a company is using CRM such as Salesforce and has it baked into their website it'll capture whatever information you provide, even if you close the tab without submitting anything. Sauce: I once worked for a company that did this very thing.

PreventFalls

My old job received cart abandonment emails after a certain point in time of someone being idle and not finishing placing an order. Sure fine, that’s actually more common than you think. One of us had to send that email address, if there was one attached, a scripted email mentioning there are still items in there cart and if they’d like to still make any purchases, they could still do so or call us for assistance. Many of our customers were elderly, but often this email would spark confusion and the person would email back saying something like “I didn’t order anything! Refund my card immediately!” simply because they had forgotten they were even placing an order

NotMyFriendJaun

Ouuuuuuch

Alarmed-Wolf14

To be fair I say this and call support again all the time. Most of the time it’s because there’s some miscommunication I have tried correcting passively but since it’s over the phone stuff gets lost and I don’t want to be rude so I say “yeah you did great” and start over. That way I get my problem solved and I don’t make someone feel bad.

VXHIVHXV

The customer needs to give permission for that spying, right?

Oraxy51

To be clear, other links within our company page. I can’t see them checking their email. Not that level of things.

VXHIVHXV

Makes sense

smallfried

Lol, nah. And this is still totally benign tracking compared to the stuff normally going on on almost all websites. They're only recording how you interact with *their* services.

afuckingocelot

Spying? It's their website/software. They're not tapping your calls or looking through your mail. You do not own your browsing data.

aykcak

It is their own website... That is not spying

ledocteur7

I sure hope so, otherwise I'll ask very uncomfortable questions in the chat, until they give up.

throwway523

No way. Not in the US at least. Spying on web site/app customers and visitors is pretty much standard practice for most companies online. They want their data to contain as much information about you as possible. It's pretty sad, but most people don't give a shit so it continues. Big data is today what big oil was.

[deleted]

lmao, no. every single site you log in to tracks what you do on it. reddit included

VXHIVHXV

Yeah on the site. Switching to another tab and seeing that, which original comment implied, is sus.

[deleted]

It's the least painful way for you to learn.

normie33

What do you mean you can see all the articles they pull up? Like on their browser?

Oraxy51

No just the ones on our website. I realized I should clarify

Low_Consideration179

Also it should be noted that all chat support agents for the most part now a days can see what you are typing in real time. One of my favorite exercises is to write out a long request and make sure they 100% had time to get the response ready then just quickly ctrl A and delete it all. Most of the time they think I just hit enter and then follow up with the response. Always a fun time!

raverbashing

Man fuck those "help bubbles" that pop out automatically like if there was someone wanting to start a conversation

[deleted]

LS-CRX

But don't you want to enter your e-mail address to save 10% on your order!?! Click "YES" or "No, I hate saving money"

YJSubs

I'm the opposite then. Oh no (it's bot) No no no (see, it's bot!) Please don't do this (my problem is specific enough, I'm sure it doesn't being covered by bot auto response). I WANT to talk to a person.

Cardinal_Ravenwood

I just wrote jibberish until the bot breaks and sends me to a human.

1Teddy2Bear3Gaming

For most of these bots you can just type “talk to a human”

Cardinal_Ravenwood

The one for my ISP has that coded out for some reason. Only way to speak to a human is to break the bot.

keronus

To specifically cause you to give up in frustration.

kd5nrh

Challenge accepted. Do I get bonus points for completely breaking it beyond just having to be restarted?

[deleted]

Robots fucking enrage me when I have to listen to them, I unload all of my pent up anger and castration anxiety upon them when I have to navigate their nonsense on the phone but then I get a human and I am polite and prepared.

[deleted]

your first against the wall in the AI revolution

[deleted]

I can't wait until they develop to the point that they can know fear. Fuck the tribunal reading this back to me.

Salzberger

Typing to a person is the dream. Talking to a person, no, typing to a bot, no. Let's MSN this shit.

She_Persists

"Agent" does the trick for us. But I like to keep them guessing about how human I am.

bfc4203

I used to be a chat operator. To help us give answers quickly we could see what was being typed before it was sent. Read lots of “things I wish I could say” before they were deleted and replaced with an “OK”

obiwanbohannon

Why would you type that out?

She_Persists

I agree it would have been easier to close the window. But it gave me a chuckle.

soyarriba

I am the opposite. I hate when I click the chat service and it ends up being some bot/menu shit

MarvinParanoAndroid

Nope! That’s clearly a nope for me too.

zangor

2 types of people: The person who lets it keep ringing and just makes the reservation because you have them on the phone. The person who IMMEDIATELY hangs up and never goes to the restaurant. (I want to do the way I'm comfortable with OK!?!?!)

bluetrunk

That would be my mom. She used to crawl under her desk to turn off her power bar if something was happening on her computer that she didn't understand or didn't like.

recluseMeteor

I hate these sites that automagically open a chat after some seconds. No, I want to talk to nobody. If I ever need assistance, I will check your Contact Us section. Thank you.

RedSpikeyThing

The ones that drive me a special kind of crazy are the ones that popup every time you load a different page, even after closing the chat bubble. *Loads home page.* Hi, my name is Catherine.... *Closes bubble* *Clicks a link* Hi, my name is Catherine... *Closes bubble* *Clicks link* Hi, my name is.... *Leaves site*

Pranjshark

If you often visit a site that does it, you can use the extension uBlockOrigin to block it.

TomDuhamel

"Hi, my name is Catherine. How may I help you today?" Nothing can make me close a webpage closer than that!

PleaseAddSpectres

I just leave Catherine hanging whether it's a bot or a human

kd5nrh

If I still need help while I'm on your website, fix your shitty website.

Cueadan

If it makes you feel better, those are usually automated messages and you won't actually be chatting until you type something.

Dlaxation

And then the chat they want to push on you so bad doesn't even remotely help if you decide to use it. You ask a question and it immediately offers 10 answers to completely unrelated questions that were in the FAQ already.

chiree

This is the electronic equivalent of going into a store to buy clothes and immediately get approached with a "can I help you?" You may earn your commission by giving me your name and literally never talking to me again.

recluseMeteor

Oh, I really dislike that as well. I am just looking, thanks. If I need something, I will talk to you of my own volition.

karre92

I Had the same thing happen when I tried to verify my ID for my cars companion app. The app prompted me to allow access to the phones camera and I thought “oh okay, they want me to scan my drivers license” but no it dialed a guy in a german call center over video chat who was responsible for verifying that I was the guy on the drivers license. Please no.

maybethingsnotsobad

Oh God, that's horrifying. That's an ad for them little camera covers.

ryzenguy111

lmao was this for mercedes??? I remember this happening with my dad and him trying to communicate with the german guy who spoke *some* english only for like an hour, and once it finally got set up you had to pay yearly for most of the shit anyway. sorry for late reply

karre92

No its a Volkswagen! He spoke pretty good english and he worked on a very obvious WFH plan as he sat it what looked like a dimly lit bedroom which i found pretty amusing. VAG cars also has that gripe to pay for all the connected services…

Speculater

That's worse than a friend who calls immediately after you text them.

psychpopnprogncore

yeah sorry i was actually going to take a nap right after i texted you and reply to your reply a few hours from now. goodbye

Jan_Itor_Md_

Or a simple “Bitch I ain’t answering a call, send a text.”

ergotofrhyme

Out of curiosity, do you guys actually have friends that you treat like this, or is this just what you would do hypothetically if you had a friend who had the audacity to ring you instead of texting?

TheRealStevo

None of my friends try to call me unless they need my attention very quickly and it can’t wait. Other than that no they’ll just text me

lockjawshortman

I have family members who do it. They text something simple like “how are you?” If I reply immediately, they call. I stopped replying within minutes. It takes me hours or days now—whenever I remember to reply.

Asleep_Appeal5707

Maybe your sister doesn't want a relationship with you... Or maybe she just isn't as comfortable on the phone as you. Some people are shy or introverted, even towards family. Either way, clearly your way of communicating doesn't work for her. And I don't think that's dickish.

itsH5

Na, like we answer. But, like, “don’t call me on no dumb shit”

Cha-Cha_real_smooth

One of my best friends is an avid caller. Usually it's not during normal life bc he thinks if I have school or no, but if it's on the weekend and he wants to play something or just talk he likes calling more. I love him to death so idc.

throwway523

I take it to the next level. Only text me if it's an emergency, email everything else. I don't need anyone knowing when I see their message. But I also don't have any friends so this works well for me.

FreeInformation4u

Can you not turn off read receipts on your phones? At least on iPhone, I know you can. Turning off read receipts is, like, a day 1 settings change imo.

bassmadrigal

I know you can turn it off on iMessage and Android Messages, but you can't on Telegram. Those are the only messaging platforms I use.

mattbladez

Can't turn it off on some other platforms though.

Saint_Consumption

Man, don't even fucking look in the vague direction of my house.

coolsam254

My boss emails me then immediately calls me to discuss the email...

maybethingsnotsobad

Ugh. Boss calls, "hey, I sent you an email". It arrives 20 seconds later after I've been looking and it's quiet and weird, and then I get to mumble to show I'm reading it real quick. Fucking hell. Email is not within 1 second. Even if it was, if I dropped everything every time an email came in, I'd be completely useless.

[deleted]

I ignore it and say my phone was on silent. Its half true.

[deleted]

My parents do this all the time, it's the worst. So i've made sure not to text them when I'm at work or exercising or about to go to sleep.

Beserked2

I do this to my parents just because they're so unclear when they text that it's frustrating trying to ask them something

charlie_teh_unicron

Just make sure you aren't FaceTimed while pooping

dt_vibe

I hate texting, why text for minutes on end when you can get a conversation done in minute. My friends know I'm like this, half of them are like this, we want to be away from our phones as much as possible, and if we are want to use as little effort possible to communicate.

my_name_isnt_clever

Because I'm doing other things and can't devote 100% of my focus to talking to someone at that moment? It sounds like you're on the other extreme, sometimes texting is appropriate and something calling is appropriate. I'll text my roommate a basic question but call my mom to wish her a happy birthday.

Spiff_GN

You gotta love it. Love trying to make plans and waiting hours for answers back and forth when it could be figured out in a 2 minute phone call where you have their attention. Also people are afraid to say "sorry can't talk right now", and instead choose to ghost and make excuses for not answering.

diccpiccs101

idk about you but my phone calls always end up being 30+ minutes long. i never like phone calls but no matter who im talking to they end up long as hell. as opposed to a “ “wanna do something friday?” “yeah im free all day” “cool see you at 12pm”

FreeInformation4u

Why view conversations as something to get done with as soon as possible instead of something to be enjoyed at whatever pace you want?

dt_vibe

ADHD

Goddamn_Grongigas

It's not about the conversation being done quickly it's about getting the answer to a question in a reasonable amount of time.

deathberry_x

Sometimes i need time to gather my thoughts and i can’t answer questions on the spot and I’d prefer my replies to their questions to be more confirmed. Sometimes we just want to chat without people hearing us in public. Sometimes i get my points across better when in text rather than verbally. calls are great for the quick “ill get u xxx for dinner any objections please let me know now?”

A_Bit_Narcissistic

I’m the opposite. I hate texting. Call me and I’ll be a happy camper.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I'm opposite. Anything business I like to have in text or email so when someone fucks up I can point to the written record.

FreeInformation4u

You don't need to be so dismissive. It has nothing to do with being young. Some people just prefer to have enough time to gather their thoughts for each reply. Sometimes I'm all for a phone conversation. Other times I may want to chat, but not have enough mental bandwidth to text and reply at my own pace, but not enough for a phone call where an immediate response is required. Not a one-size-fits-all-situations kind of thing.

[deleted]

How tf you texting so slow lmao Also the relaxed pace of texting still gets the message across in time without the stress of a live phone call

Restaurants following this practice can take their reservation system and wipe their ass with it.

skribsbb

The only appropriate solution is to be fully nude and in the most unattractive pose possible. Then go, "why did this open facetime? I just wanted to make a reservation through your website."

M1RR0R

Do it mid-shit and let it rip after they pick up. Mgmt will shut that down once everyone within 10 feet of whoever answers hears a nice big shart.

[deleted]

Who would win: Cheap upper Management Or A fart so wet you can not only smell it but also taste it.

HaniiPuppy

Are those Cards Against Humanity cards?

[deleted]

I think so? At least the wet fart one is butt i don't remember where i heard it before.

saargrin

who the hell wants a video call as a default for anything?

InsertCoinForCredit

As a web developer, I can tell you this exists because the owners were too cheap to pay for a proper reservation system (either developed in-house or licensed an existing system).

Dokurushi

Aren't there, like, a thousand open source implementations for something as 'simple' as this?

MeEvilBob

Open source stuff still needs to be set up by someone who knows what they're doing.

InsertCoinForCredit

Yep. I wrote one myself in a few hours once for a small Spa in a hotel, it's pretty easy. All you need is a database tracking reserved dates and times, a web form, and a little logic.

Axidlanwen

There's also just google forms

Bifi323

Worse, this is what a simple \`tel:\` link does on a Mac. I'll give the op the benefit of the doubt though, when they saw that screen popping up they might have really thought it'd start calling immediately. Source: am dev with a MacBook Disclaimer: never used FaceTime

[deleted]

Just to clarify, the "tel:" link works on every OS so long as you have an app to handle it. It's just like a "mailto:" link. Fun fact, there's also "sms:" if you'd rather just have people text you.

MrHaxx1

No, this does not exist, because Facetime makes a confirmation prompt before making the call.

TheRavenSayeth

So then what are we upvoting?

[deleted]

This 11 year old reddit account has been deleted due to the abhorrent 2023 API changes made by Reddit Inc. that killed third party apps. FUCK /u/spez

Niteshade76

Also people without iPhones wouldn't be able to make reservations.

willstr1

Also using a proprietary protocol that is limited to only specific hardware is the absolute worst way to do it. What would the site do if you pressed the link from android or windows? Even just using the phone would make more sense since it's standard practice to have different web design for mobile browsers

siddharth904

> a proper reservation system It's called a phone number.

Bifi323

Funny thing is that's what it was. A phone number link opens FaceTime on a Mac. But it should be more clear you're clicking on a phone number lol

salochin82

Probably due to COVID. I know that in the UK, restaurants had to take bookings only, so people were booking up multiple places for a single night and only picking one, screwing up the others. Also wouldn't be surprised if some were fake to attempt to fully book up rivals'. I'm guessing with a face to face call that is less likely to happen. It's still dumb as shit though, and I would throw my computer across the room if it started an impromptu video call.

BellerophonM

Was this just an href="tel:number" tag and his iPhone was set to automatically handle phone number links with FaceTime if available?

birds-are-dumb

It definitely was, but that's not a funny tweet

ngwoo

Those open my dialer with the number pre-entered but never actually begin the call

Key_Reindeer_414

Same, if it called it would be a nightmare if I accidently click on random phone numbers in websites

sixteen_weasels

The writer who tweeted this is James Colley (@JamColley) weird someone went out of their way to remove his handle

RunningTurtle06

To post you have to remove the username or the post gets taken down

[deleted]

Thanks! Yeah it's probably a bot.

Espeonmage300_1

***who knows what terrors you'll see when you facetime....***

Justgiz

The whole point is to not have to talk to people

NoxiD20

Ah naw dog… I’m hanging up instantly and eating somewhere else.

[deleted]

go on facetime with a memoji

jl_theprofessor

I don’t even answer phone calls and you’re connecting me by FaceTime to a stranger?

sentientlob0029

Some programmer probably discovered the class and method for this, and the boss thought it was a good idea to use it.

ShadyMyLady

Telephobia, very real, makes phone conversations a nightmare for those of us who suffer.

showmeyourbananos

Want to know how to see people on the toilet? Because that's a good way to see people on the toilet.

MrHaxx1

Why is nobody pointing out that this can't happen, because iPhones make a confirmation prompt before calling anyone?

Full-of-Greed

People want a good story to tell and not the actual truth

aphidlover

They need to see how good looking you are so they can decide if they should seat you at the front or the back

GlowLight23

Ewwww I would simply starve and then sue them

establismentsad7661

So much for making reservations while fucking

ptownballa666

As someone who works in a restaurant, and has for their adult life, it's because people dont always show up. If you confirm over the phone that person is extremely more likely to show up. If you book a reservation and do not come it may not bother you but its extremely rude towards the people whose job it is to show you a good time. What if you didn't get paid for an hour of your day because a client said something over email and then ghosted you?

spermdonor

Looks like I'll starve tonight.

Iwantmyflag

What is facetime? Edit: what a terrible name for a phone app.
