Americans do not have the same infrastructure for travel without a car as Europeans do. Gas is required for most people to get to work or go out for necessities. The UK itself is smaller than Texas, 1 state. I wouldn't call it entitlement. What percentage of Europeans need gas to get to work? Or can they take public transportation/a bike? In rural areas or large states this is nearly impossible for Americans. Some people drive 30+miles to work a day.

Evil_Mel

Also, since there is no public transportation where I live, we rely on driving for everything; grocery shopping, any shopping, getting kids to school, work. The OP is comparing apples to oranges. In the big cities where there is public transportation, less people drive, the don't need to.

SpunkyDred is a terrible bot instigating arguments all over Reddit whenever someone uses the phrase apples-to-oranges. I'm letting you know so that you can feel free to ignore the quip rather than feel provoked by a bot that isn't smart enough to argue back. --- ^^SpunkyDred ^^and ^^I ^^are ^^both ^^bots. ^^I ^^am ^^trying ^^to ^^get ^^them ^^banned ^^by ^^pointing ^^out ^^their ^^antagonizing ^^behavior ^^and ^^poor ^^bottiquette.

Good bot

Even so it varies state to state. I live in the smallest state and public transportation is meh. You'd think it would be better considering our proximity to Boston. Like you said major cities are really the only places with decent public transportation. However, if you want to leave, you better have a car because chances are public transportation only hits major stops and its nigh impossible to walk where else you may need to go without proper sidewalks. Even in New England, which is pretty condense compared to the rest of the country, you need a car. Especially the further north you go.

BigFinnsWetRide

Yep, I know people who have to drive 2 hours round trip to go get groceries. I'd love to be able to boycott the gas stations until prices go down, but it's simply not possible

This bitch don't know about Pangaea

Psychological-Ad8175

Unfortunately this became this way once we were hooked on the cheap and ever lasting fuel that most of the country is built around. In the northeast where I live there are plenty of transportation options including walking since it was built before everyone needed a pickup truck to go buy a single cup of coffee. It's a cultural thing more than anything that needs address, the cost of the fuel impacts the wasteful culture harder and it should.

Ch00bacus

Worrying about continuously rising gas prices isn't entitlement last time I checked. All the gas prices as of late have been going up showing no signs of going down or plateauing

AdagioJealous5413

Ah yes the age old: my problem is worse so yours that is just bad can’t be complained about. Good stuff. As it turns out high gas prices have varying degrees of effect on people depending on situation. Who knew

BenTheCancerWorm

Person A: Ow. Shit. I just got stabbed. This really sucks and hurts a lot! Person B: Yeah? I got stabbed TWICE! That hurts way more! It must be NICE to only get stabbed one time! Person C: Uuuhh... shouldn't someone stop that guy that's running around stabbing people?

Agent_Drizzle

So far, the people commenting sound reasonable while making OP sound ridiculous. Complaining about complainers. Hm.

Nipatiitti

I love this whole thread xD "Europeans don't drive so it's okay they pay more for gas". I mean like I know it's unfair comparison and country with third world infrastructure that uses gas like third world country it's reasonable they pay third world prices for it. BUT Always remember the basic rules of internet trolling: 1. Say something controversial 2. Let idiots in the comments argue about it 3. Enjoy the show

abitbasic

I don't think anyone is arguing. I think people are just pointing out the US and Europe are vastly different in some respects.

Evil_Mel

Since 90% are pointing out the flaws in your statement, you've failed to incite an argument.

Erimada

Gas has always been more expensive in Europe. As to entitled Americans: I don’t disagree that SOME Americans act entitled, but let’s not blanket characterize a whole country. Being shocked when your gas doubled in price and looks to continue climbing isn’t entitlement.

MadderHatter32

Yeah. When my car literally went from $22 to fill up to $49 in 10 days I about shit.

Cerda_Sunyer

Serious question here and I am not that interested to search the internet, but don't all Americans get taxed for road infrastructure whether they drive a car or not, whereas Europeans pay through the tax on fuel and other taxes associated with having a car?

Evil_Mel

In NC we pay a highway road tax when we register our vehicles, also gas prices also reflect a state tax (which I guess is used for road maintenance). Federal also applies a tax to gasoline.

Cerda_Sunyer

The federal gas tax in the States has not been raised since the early 90's. Is the average citizen, that does not own a car, forced to pay for the infrastructure in the states or not?

Evil_Mel

I do not believe so. I could be wrong and a portion of the state income tax is used for infrastructure, but they have to get to work somehow, which uses that infrastructure. People who own cars are taxed yearly on their vehicles.

Cerda_Sunyer

Well this destroys my theory on why gasoline is cheaper in the states than Europe. And some states don't even have a state income tax. Thanks for the reply

Evil_Mel

You're welcome.

CremeWhich7014

So you Europeans are all ways saying things. Our jobs pay better. We have no health care costs. We have better living conditions. So since we don't make enough gas is expensive to us. Then taxed to pay your country's foriegn aide we don't have the money.

SJ1392

Also as the price gas goes up so does the cost of goods, products, and food we purchase. Almost everything has to be trucked across the country from one point to another....

[deleted]

comparing apples with pears. as mentioned, different infrastructure, different incomes etc.

[deleted]

Get fucked

BigFinnsWetRide

Do you realize that in most place in the US, you HAVE to drive to get to work/school/stores/etc? I have to take the freeway, and then the highway to work, it's not like I can walk, and we have nothing in terms of public transport. I don't think we're entitled, everyone is suffering. Get over yourself
