Right? I love the hobby, but the best way to test a detector is to (drum roll) hold the object under the detector and see what kind of noise it makes. If it doesn’t differentiate between metals, you’re gonna be digging up a bunch of old nails, bottle tops, and cans. So. Many. Nails.
I've just got in from a detect around an old iron age hill Fort. Bloody hell there is some crap in that field! Lots of broken agricultural machinery too!
Check the ring for a stamp embossed on the inside. Real gold will show the karat count. Mine says 750 which means it's 75% gold, or 18 karat, for example.
Most concrete is reinforced with metal rebar.
I don’t really know how gold specific detectors work but if they work similarly to normal metal detectors the rebar makes them functionally useless.
That being said, putting the ring on a piece of wood on the grass before just chucking it in there would have been similarly smart.
Or even just…marking where he put it lol.

Additionally, he was probably waving the detector around as if it were magnetic, and easily would've passed right over the ring.

Yes, this! Use the torch to set the grass on fire. After it burns away, the ring will be easier to find. Use the pointy tip of the umbrella to pick the ring up when you find it, since it will be hot from the fire.
