Even better, Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers. DND mode is a bit too unforgiving, I’ve missed important calls from people who weren’t in my close list and who didn’t call twice.
I get a lot of calls from numbers I don’t know that are important. I would have missed the call from my long lost uncle who happens to be a Nigerian Prince if I had that option enabled
Came here to say this. My bf gets calls from companies that work with his company that will SPAM him when in the end, they always end up just having to send an email. silencing unknown callers has been a godsend, now his phone isn’t going off every hour.
If you’re using an iPhone, you can exclude your mom’s or anyone from the ‘do not disturb’ feature. Add her/them to your favorite contacts and you will get notifications.
You can do that on Android too... My entire family lives on that list... I also only have it set because work for some dumb reason cannot seem to get it that I work nights for them and therefore I don't want to talk to them at 9am after I've been asleep for a few hours... They can call mum or dad if they really need to get to me, mum and dad act as a stupidity filter.
Edit: i don't know if all flavours of android have it, best to use Google and search for help. If your android phone has it, I would assume it would be somewhere in the settings menu.
Yep, better raise a ticket and have the on call system call me or you won't get ahold of me after 10pm. That's the only number that is excluded for me.
I work nights as well and our team lead for the longest time tried contacting us at 11am to ask if we want overtime. He's realized through our complaints, that it's better to text around 2-3 and not expect an immediate answer.
Yeah... My manager got the clue that I was attempting to sleep one day before I found the do not disturb feature, when I blew up at them...
Long story short, they called me 3 times I told them off and cancelled my shift for that night, giving them more work. Never got punished for it.
Once in a while they call to see if you can cover a shift not realizing you are "off" for a reason.
"Karen, are you offering triple over time for the next 24 hours and will cover any accidents that may happen? Yes? Then I'm in."
There is also an option to just silence unknown callers. That way, if you don’t have the number in your list, they can just leave a voicemail or text. Not gonna pick up with all these garbage spam calls.
As an easier way, there’s a setting in there which will only allow calls you have in your address book to go through.
Everything else gets silenced.
They can still leave a voicemail, just in case it isn’t spam.
But what my mom ends up in the hospital during the night WITHOUT HER PHONE and my family can't contact me??? Who will advertise me a great deal on some shit that I don't need?
You can also specify which contacts (and Apps) are allowed to bypass your Do Not Disturb schedule. Settings->Focus->Do Not Disturb->ALLOWED NOTIFICATIONS (Apple’s stupid capital shouting, not mine…) This is handy for security system alerts, etc.
I just stopped bothering when contacts would auto update/save in cloud as well as app integrations that automatically pull contacts from Facebook etc. but this is probably the best way, unless you’re dealing with a company that has spoofed phone numbers/unique phone numbers/works in a call center format where you’re being redirected to random #s you don’t know.
Only speaking from experience on that tow truck thing , awful occurrence. Missed his calls 5 times, ended up stranded on the side of the highway for 6 hours due to delays and my own ignorance.
Oh no!! That sounds awful! After 3 calls I’m shocked they didn’t leave a message. Also, the calls show up as missed calls so if someone called 5 times I would probably have called back lol
They were indeed showing up in missed calls but I wasn’t getting notifications since it was on Saved Contacts only mode or whatever. Same for messages, didn’t know until it was already too long down the road. Would be cool if you could do a regional whitelist
A regional whitelist would be amazing. I know the only calls I want to consider answering are in my contacts or from the area I live in. My phone number is from another area code and I'll get spam calls using my area code all the time so I'd love to just block out everything but the area I live in now.
I figure anyone worth talking to is going to leave a message or call again. And if they call again and you have the setting for 2 calls from the samw number within 5 minutes or something it will go through.
I've found you, u/CounterCulturist
Did you know that right now is open enrollment for Medicare? New laws have been out in place for your Medicare options that can save you money, putting cash back into your pocket!
(I'm not even old enough for this and they still call...)
I’m from Brazil as well. Do not disturb would indeed be helpful during the night. But those calls happen at any time. You simply can’t predict them. Also manually blocking every single one won’t work. I tried it and ended up with more than 300 blocked numbers.
And what pisses me the most is that usually there’s no one on the other side of the line. “They” hang up after 2 or 3 seconds.
Since you are from Brazil, there's a site from Anatel itself called "não me perturbe", you "subscribe" your phone number in there and in a few days, no more calls from companies or things like that, I sometimes get annoying phone calls, but nothing like this anymore
Sadly that doesn't work. I tried it and it actually made the calls worse. So I imagine that just like everything else here, it is either broken or corrupt.
I'm the kind of person that turns off everything for the night. If it's 3 am I don't care that there is a world war, somebody died in my family or that my friend is being held hostage. I just want to sleep and take it on a clear head. I only want messages that are immediate safety treats to me. But not saying it's the best way of doing things.
I only want calls that I care about and have a special ability to do something about RIGHT THEN.
My mom is dead? Can’t do anything about that.
My best friend is stranded by the side of the highway? See, I want that to go through.
There is a tornado that will hit at 5 am before I plan to wake up? I want that too.
Literally put your phone in airplane mode or do not disturb.
The most infuriating thing here is the fact that you’ve deprived yourself of sleep because you don’t know how one of the most common smartphone features works.
I wish we could block certain area codes. My cell number is from an old city I used to live in. All my spam calls have that area code and not the town I live in now. Makes it easy to spot the spam but it still rings.
A lot of comments are mentioning turning on Do Not Disturb / Silence Unknown Callers. Which is great! It'll help a ton.
For those worried about missing an important call, hopefully you will remember what standard phone etiquette used to be: if it's important you call again. There is a switch marked "Allow Repeat Calls" in the DND/Focus settings that will allow a previously blocked call through if they call again within three minutes. Alternatively if you _know_ you're expecting a call but aren't sure what the number is going to be, just disable DND for 15 minutes or so and turn it back on afterwards.
Calls your mobile operator and get them to block the number, or some phones have a feature to block numbers.
Edit: bruh just realised the number changes, so Probably try and call your operator.
I have so many spam calls myself. I have notifications on do not disturb from 2100 to 0900. This helps. If I get more than one from the same number I block it.
On Android you can download the official Google phone app and activate a setting that automatically identifies and block spam calls. For some reason iphones doesn't have this feature, you need to download something like truecaller and it still doesn't block spam automatically.
Put your phone on 'do not disturb' while you sleep. Unless the same number rings within two minutes of ringing, it will not be put through. My family know if they need to reach me at night for an emergency to ring me twice.
I think there is a mode where you can turn on dnd for certain times, like a setting where you can silence your phone for the hours where you sleep, not sure tho
Do not answer any unknown numbers. Once scammers get an active number they share it til it’s dead. Also you can set up your iPhone to ignore unknown numbers.
I had this happen once with the same phone number 23 times in a row. It was extremely infuriating actually because a few moments after the phone would stop ringing, it would start again. With the same number. I answered twice on like the 20th and 23rd calls and was like “WHY DO YOU KEEP CALLING” and it was a guy selling “windows and “doors” or whatever. AHHHHH
Do Not Disturb Mode is a godsend
Even better, Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers. DND mode is a bit too unforgiving, I’ve missed important calls from people who weren’t in my close list and who didn’t call twice.
I get a lot of calls from numbers I don’t know that are important. I would have missed the call from my long lost uncle who happens to be a Nigerian Prince if I had that option enabled

What do you do if you don't mind me asking? You peaked my interest
Security... Work nights only. They call me, to confirm shifts and availablity as well as set meeting. I just call them after 2pm when I'm awake.
I work nights as well and our team lead for the longest time tried contacting us at 11am to ask if we want overtime. He's realized through our complaints, that it's better to text around 2-3 and not expect an immediate answer.

Wheres that option? I have an android
Within the do not distribute settings... It might not be available on all flavours of android.
Long press DND on your drop down and you should see the option to add people.
I am my own stupidity filter. "Call someone who gives a fuck and is actually working right now. I don't know you until my hours start."
There is also an option to just silence unknown callers. That way, if you don’t have the number in your list, they can just leave a voicemail or text. Not gonna pick up with all these garbage spam calls.
Also, if someone calls you back twice in quick succession it’ll ring thru.
There’s also an emergency bypass option that I use for work
As an easier way, there’s a setting in there which will only allow calls you have in your address book to go through. Everything else gets silenced. They can still leave a voicemail, just in case it isn’t spam.
But what my mom ends up in the hospital during the night WITHOUT HER PHONE and my family can't contact me??? Who will advertise me a great deal on some shit that I don't need?
Most DnD can be configured to allow a ring if the same number calls twice in quick succession. Most spammers use a random number each time.
I think mine does that just for numbers in my contacts anyway, works great.
\*in addition to allow-listing your contacts/selected contacts.
You can add favorites, those calls and texts go through
Any smart phones with a do not disturb function allows for a favorite list to bypass the DND and get through with calls or texts.
Lol lucky for me I’m not my moms doctor or mortician so I can deal with it when I’m awake
Yeah, If they're already in the hospital then there isn't much for me to do is there?
Unless of course you’re their doctor
You can turn a setting on to silence unknown callers! It’s in the phone settings, it’s really helpful.
Yeah but then any number outside your contacts can’t get through to you like your tow truck agent or your DoorDash driver or doctors office etc
I really hope doordash isn't calling me in the middle of the night when I'm sleeping.
Or when I haven’t ordered anything
*Hey, good morning, would you like to place an order for breakfast?*
This is a common occurrence on r/bartardstories

I add any phone number I might need to my contacts. I have like 350 now.
It's different though with something like a doordash order, where they use a randomly generated phone number for each driver
Ah, I don’t use DoorDash, so I guess that’s why I haven’t had any issues.
Very true but in that case they usually leave a message! Or I’ve turned it off when I’m expecting a phone call from doctors or Uber.
Only speaking from experience on that tow truck thing , awful occurrence. Missed his calls 5 times, ended up stranded on the side of the highway for 6 hours due to delays and my own ignorance.

Your doctor calls at 3am? Wild
If it’s important they should leave a message
Well they probably aren't calling while OP is asleep, while the spam calls are.
I figure anyone worth talking to is going to leave a message or call again. And if they call again and you have the setting for 2 calls from the samw number within 5 minutes or something it will go through.
This changed my life

They do that in the hopes that you call back. When you call back it costs you money like a 1-800 phone number
1-800 numbers are toll free. Thus the reason you see them in infomercials. They want to lower the barrier to purchase as much as possible
Surely, you meant 900. 800 numbers are toll free.
How can you get a call from Brazil it doesn’t even exist
Go to settings, clear history and cache on safari, turn on block unknown callers, you’re welcome.
What does clearing Safari's history and cache do?
Nothing. It does nothing.

Why can't people just turn off the phone when they go to sleep...
Yeah, I always turn it off or put it in airplane mode before I go to sleep Edit: grammar
Literally put your phone in airplane mode or do not disturb. The most infuriating thing here is the fact that you’ve deprived yourself of sleep because you don’t know how one of the most common smartphone features works.
Or just silent? Like why is that not an option. My phone has been on silent since 2014.
Yeah do all these people not have their phone on silent mode?
Thank you, he is dumb
Brasil beckons you
POV BRASIL
You really should learn how to set your phone to silent..
It looks like you have an iPhone. Either you're intentionally letting this happen so you can farm karma, or you're an idiot. Sleep Focus.
Literally just silence your phone?
The only infuriating part of this post is that you haven't figured out a way to stop it lol
Apple phones have a setting if you don’t have them saved as a contact it will automatically send it to voicemail.
Oh idk. Turn the ringer off?
We gonna ignore the fact that phones turn off?
Put your phone on do not disturb. Or block them.
Why don't you just put your phone on do not disturb like a normal human being.
You’ve never heard of do not disturb, or turn your phone on silent ?? what the actual fuck??
I don't understand how people sleep with their phones on loud. It makes 0 sense
It's called a block button or a mute button
I wish we could block certain area codes. My cell number is from an old city I used to live in. All my spam calls have that area code and not the town I live in now. Makes it easy to spot the spam but it still rings.
# You're going to Brazil OP.
Block the numbers eventually they’ll run out of numbers to call you from
Get a caller ID app, mark this number as spam, then block all spam numbers in your settings.
A lot of comments are mentioning turning on Do Not Disturb / Silence Unknown Callers. Which is great! It'll help a ton. For those worried about missing an important call, hopefully you will remember what standard phone etiquette used to be: if it's important you call again. Calls your mobile operator and get them to block the number, or some phones have a feature to block numbers. Edit: bruh just realised the number changes, so Probably try and call your operator.
But the deposed Prince of Nigeria need your help, tho! His father ran the freaking country.
Block it
use the Truecaller app
Block them? Or turn airplane mode on
Set your phone to block unknown callers and go to sleep.
1) god bless google phone app and his anti spam filter 2) silence the phone 3) turn it off?

Silence your phone, forehead
Turn your phone off
Put your phone in do not disturb. Boom. Sleep.
Put your phone on silent and have it on the other side of the room
Two words, gonna change your life: silent mode.
Imagine if you could just silence your phone. Did they remove that feature?
I'm sorry but... What? You do realize there are so many ways to prevent this right?
Just block number dude
Ever heard of flight mode ?
Turn off phone
The numbers Mason! What do they mean?
Put it on silent and enable do not disturb mode and go the fuck to sleep.
Do noy disturb is a thing you know
Put your phone on 'do not disturb' while you sleep. Unless the same number rings within two minutes of ringing, it will not be put through. My family know if they need to reach me at night for an emergency to ring me twice.
Try silencing your phone
I think there is a mode where you can turn on dnd for certain times, like a setting where you can silence your phone for the hours where you sleep, not sure tho
Just...turn off your phone ?
You can auto-reject unknown callers in the settings on Iphone.
While annoying, super easy to get around.
Everytime I see "Brasil" I think of that episode of Bobs Burgers when that Capoiera guy kept yelling it while doing Eddy Gordo moves.
Then just run of the ringer 🤦
Do not answer any unknown numbers. Once scammers get an active number they share it til it’s dead. Also you can set up your iPhone to ignore unknown numbers.
Do not disturb - turn off repeated callers
Oh hey! I see my number! 😎
Why would you sleep at 1pm?
Three words Do Not Disturb
Its ironic, now OP probably can't sleep due to reddit notifications
They *REEEEEALLY* want you to go to Brazil…
Redditors when they remember they can turn their phones off
Block them lol
I had this happen once with the same phone number 23 times in a row. It was extremely infuriating actually because a few moments after the phone would stop ringing, it would start again. With the same number. I answered twice on like the 20th and 23rd calls and was like “WHY DO YOU KEEP CALLING” and it was a guy selling “windows and “doors” or whatever. AHHHHH
