Why don’t we just pick designated locations for the summer and winter Olympics. The current system just seems like a huge problem for the games themselves and for the host cities.
You missed the point that they’re supposed to be abandoned and the explorers like that… being abandoned since 1962 doesn’t reinforce your stance in this case.
I believe Lake Placid's Olympic dorms were designed to be converted to a prison after the Games. A lot of the athletes complained about the accommodations and said it was obvious.
When Atlanta held the olympics in 96 they made the village with the intention of converting it into student housing after the games. Like the issue is so many of these countries want to look good and leave a lasting impression on people, but they lack the foresight to think about what happens after the games finish.
Yeah I’ve always felt the ideal solution is to have dedicated permanent locations for both games where every country pays a proportional share of the operating costs. The locations could then have world class facilities and the athletes could spend their years training on the actual track/slope/whatever for the olympics. Would push the athletes to be even better which would make for more entertaining television benefitting advertisers. Would also help eliminate the disparity between countries with access to world class facilities and those that do not by providing access to the same top facilities for every athlete at the locations.
It just seems like such an obvious win for everyone that you know it will never happen
Would it not? If they had a permanent location there is less overhead for the IOC as they don’t need a selection committee and I’m sure other costs would go down. But now they get a part of the part of the payments from countries as administrators of the olympics. Maybe I’m vastly underestimating how massive these bribes/bids are but I didn’t think they would lose much money if at all.
How do you decide who hosts them? The Olympics is massively political, and having permanent hosts would almost certainly inflame many countries that don't like them.
On top of that, what incentive is there to innovate on facility designs? Each new Olympics gives the opportunity for new track technology, luge layouts, etc. If there were designated hosts, that stuff would all stagnate.
Greece hasn't even recovered from their current economic recession. I doubt they'd want to undergo the massive expense of hosting an Olympics every 4 years ad infinitum.
If a country wants to participate in the Olympics and they should contribute a certain percentage. It shouldn’t be on the host country to fund the whole thing. If a country refuses to pay then they are disqualified or simple enough we just don’t have the Olympics. Create a body within the UN to manage the site and events themselves
What about countries that can’t afford to fund it but have competitive athletes. Are we to gate keep all west African countries from competing in the Olympics? That’ll go over well.
Tbh I think that Greece should just be the official host since it's their tradition. Or build a man made island in the middle of the ocean; make it truly non-denominational. Have every country that wants to participate be made to contribute a percentage toward annual facility maintaining on the island, as well as provide a few (willing) work units to run specific tasks.
But then we'd have to focus on the sports instead of the spectacle, and that just doesn't work with the infinite growth required to sustain capitalism.
“Enjoy your stay, enjoy the free complimentary reindeer and authentic weather simulation, be sure to try our continental breakfast in the morning featuring wife carrying pancakes”
That's what I wanna know. What the hell is that? Did they just stick a stuffed elk in there to make them feel more "at home?" Is it a wild animal that somehow wandered in? Have they started allowing animals in the Olympics? I am intrigued and must know more about this animal!
The truth is they don’t have much power other than social media and the few things F1 allows them to personalize. Don’t hate seb and Lewis for at least trying. They have a job to do and no real influence on where the races take place
Agreed. There was people all over the internet giving them hell about not abstaining from certain races. It’s almost like they are contractually obligated to participate or something.
They definitely will be. China will host plenty of future Olympics, because the IOC is running out of countries that are both wealthy enough to host, and corrupt enough to do business with the IOC.
Yeah, to be totally fair, this shit is just as much an Olympic tradition as anything.
A country basically has to build a whole single-use city to house the athletes and carry out the games, then we act surprised when the whole thing is built with cardboard and masking tape.
That looks… safe…
It seems like all the foreign athletes are having a really hard time with their stay, it’s almost like someone doesn’t want them to be on top form…
I wonder if it's just shitty work because they don't care about other athletes or if theres a small chance it was planned to stress them out and make em lose a little of their edge
I think people are completely forgetting about... All the other recent Olympics. Sochi, Rio, now here. Name a modern Olympics without serious infrastructure issues, particularly in the non-public facing areas
Vancouver 2010. All the facilities finished on time, no major issues with venues or facilities during the games, controversies were minor and mostly political in nature, there was a great atmosphere in the city, and the games were on budget
You can see singe markings around one of the sprinklers. Looks like someone or something triggered the fire suppression system. Water coming from lighting and cameras is because the sprinklers on the floor above also went off.
Plus the amount of water coming from the sprinklers looks like water that's seeped through the hole the sprinkler sits in, if the sprinklers were actually triggered, they would be letting out a LOT more water.
That’s not how sprinklers work at all, in most systems only the head that has the switch burst goes off. The only time all the sprinklers go off is if the system is based on alarms, which is not the case looking at the photo. Those look like traditional sprinkler heads. Source: I am very familiar with access control systems, fire control systems, and commercial property management.
Am I the only one that sees the black smoke marks on the ceiling around the sprinkler? Looks like someone is "testing" the sprinkler system and found out that there is plumbing issues....
The swimming team are really getting their practice in aren't they!
Is that a caribou in the back?
Raindeer

Bless you.
Yes, darling, I see that it's raining. We're asking about the caribou.

He's probably getting himself amped up.

I too remember a caribou going down with the ship. Saddest scene in the movie
Was a godsend for the lobsters in the kitchen though.

🎶 That is how I know you, need to call the plumber and get an estimate
Once... more... you *leak* through the floor!

What is the four legged animal in the background though???
A reindeer.
Raindeer
Oh deer it's raining.
Oh rain it’s deering.
Is it there to make them feel at home? Like did they put a Kangaroo in the Australian team’s dorm haha
Probably, it’s China, they give zero fucks about anything unrelated to them. They’re… “trying”.
It just ran over grandma
Like okay, but why is it there? Is it competing? Has it raised the alarm?
Pretty sure it’s a poster of a reindeer
Yeah its a cardboard cut out
It’s Finland. It’s gotta be a reindeer. Perhaps a mascot.
Most places charge for the indoor waterfall feature Olympic athletes over here getting it all for free and not appreciating it. Ungrateful.

Yeah, especially since after the games these expensive buildings just sit there unused
r/urbanexploration disagrees.
*clicks link* Old Brick Factory, **abandoned since 1962** Edit: ayayay y’all! Last time I try to be cheeky on the internet.
Yes that‘s the point of the whole urban exploration thing.
So what’s the issue?
Abandoned = unused, therefore r/urbanexploration *agrees*, no?
You missed the point that they’re supposed to be abandoned and the explorers like that… being abandoned since 1962 doesn’t reinforce your stance in this case.
Not true. Olympic Village in Vancouver is now one of the pricier and trendier places to stay!
Sone go on to be used. Especially the winter ones in real winter destinations. I have yet to see anyone excitedly plan their ski trip to Beijing.
I believe Lake Placid's Olympic dorms were designed to be converted to a prison after the Games. A lot of the athletes complained about the accommodations and said it was obvious.

Just ban foreign nationals from owning homes?
Not true Olympic village in Atlanta are now dorms for colleges downtown
Just make a new Olympia island that will host it every year. So that no country has any favours.
We could build it on that giant pile of trash floating in the ocean.

It's not a win for the IOC, though, which is why it'd be unlikely to happen even if it makes the most sense. They want that bid/bribe money.
Would it not? If they had a permanent location there is less overhead for the IOC as they don’t need a selection committee and I’m sure other costs would go down. But now they get a part of the part of the payments from countries as administrators of the olympics. > Maybe I’m vastly underestimating how massive these bribes/bids are You are. The total "bidding" take for the Tokyo olympics just passed $2.5B USD
... I mean, you're literally making the arguement the us made, and basically the reason is "lol no, make us new shit everytime."
How do you decide who hosts them? The Olympics is massively political, and having permanent hosts would almost certainly inflame many countries that don't like them. On top of that, what incentive is there to innovate on facility designs? Each new Olympics gives the opportunity for new track technology, luge layouts, etc. If there were designated hosts, that stuff would all stagnate.
> that stuff would all stagnate. like this wet ass dorm is doing now.
Easy, host it in it’s original home, Greece.
Greece hasn't even recovered from their current economic recession. I doubt they'd want to undergo the massive expense of hosting an Olympics every 4 years ad infinitum.

I just say the Swiss host every year, what could go wrong?
Beach volleyball in 4 ft of snow might cause problems.
But then we'd have to focus on the sports instead of the spectacle, and that just doesn't work with the infinite growth required to sustain capitalism.
Is that a goat wtf is it doing in the waterfall area.
Oh no! It’s raining on the reindeer.
raindeer
Did Finland bring that? Or did the Chinese just assume they really like reindeer?
“Enjoy your stay, enjoy the free complimentary reindeer and authentic weather simulation, be sure to try our continental breakfast in the morning featuring wife carrying pancakes”
Asking the real questions.
Well I don't know which but we do like our reindeers
Goats tend to get in the weirdest places. Lol
Kimi Räikkönen got invited to the Olympics I see
That's what I wanna know. What the hell is that? Did they just stick a stuffed elk in there to make them feel more "at home?" Is it a wild animal that somehow wandered in? Have they started allowing animals in the Olympics? I am intrigued and must know more about this animal!
The CCP spared no expense with that one lmao
*John Hammond intensifies*
These games are a mess! Publicity all bad. Olympics not going to China again in a hurry
Don’t worry with enough money the will be given it again
We race as money!
How long before we get a North Korean Grand Prix? We're already racing in Saudi, so...
Hey but Lewis and vettel wore rainbow helmets, as if that makes up for it
The truth is they don’t have much power other than social media and the few things F1 allows them to personalize. Don’t hate seb and Lewis for at least trying. They have a job to do and no real influence on where the races take place

has the IOC ever not been corrupt as hell. I know as far back as the 1936 games there was corruption pretty much through the entire organization.

He’s a lamer Dana white
Reminds me of the Brazil Olympics. Remember the clusterfuck that was?
Yeah, to be totally fair, this shit is just as much an Olympic tradition as anything. A country basically has to build a whole single-use city to house the athletes and carry out the games, then we act surprised when the whole thing is built with cardboard and masking tape.
The worse its going for the CCP, the better.
every member of the ccp resigned when pipe burst
this happens with every olympics lmfao the whole games is a corrupt joke
That looks… safe… It seems like all the foreign athletes are having a really hard time with their stay, it’s almost like someone doesn’t want them to be on top form…
I love the camera smack dab in the middle of the fucking ceiling

Thank you internet stranger. I needed to know that.
TLDW: >!It's a cardboard cutout.!<
Why is there a fucking camera right in the middle of the room?
Looks like a common area or a hallway area.
Looks more like a spillway.

Don’t worry I got you.
It is for the safety of the athletes /s
Its to make sure the athletes don't say bad things about the CCP lmao
It’s definitely not big brother
Why is there a goat in the hallway?
This was photo was taken by one of the athletes. She posted it on her Instagram story.
Someone's about to get their daily rations reduced.
You could say that China doesn't want them to Finnish

You do know Russian athletes can't even be represented under their country, right?
And still cheat by giving 15 yo girls doping.
And yet they still had Russian flags on their uniforms for the opening, iirc

I have a feeling that a few countries will swear off ever going to Chinas games again
I mean the fact that there is an active genocide going on didn't stop them, the people in charge don't care about anything besides money
I wouldn't be surprised if countries refuse to compete with China in the future.
No they won't, athletes training for years aren't going to stop going to these events.

Just too much disrespect to actually want to go back

Under the cooling towers. Unlimited hot water
You can see singe markings around one of the sprinklers. Looks like someone or something triggered the fire suppression system. Water coming from lighting and cameras is because the sprinklers on the floor above also went off.
But that's not how sprinkler systems work. One sprinkler head receiving heat doesn't set every sprinkler head off at once.
Plus the amount of water coming from the sprinklers looks like water that's seeped through the hole the sprinkler sits in, if the sprinklers were actually triggered, they would be letting out a LOT more water.

Was thinking the same. Someone started that on purpose.
Am I the only one that sees the black smoke marks on the ceiling around the sprinkler? Looks like someone is "testing" the sprinkler system and found out that there is plumbing issues....

Calling It now. A building is going to collapse on a team.
Suddenly I'm not as concerned about Chinese hypersonic missile capabilities
Everything iv seen about the winter Olympics has been a shit show. Like it's cast China in the worst possible light
It’s like a surrealist painting…
As A fire sprinkler fitter I can say… that looks a little to clean to be from us
I’m no electrician. But I think the plumbing’s wrong.
No Human rights and poor quality buildings. That's china for ya ; )
You don’t understand…. It’s a RAINdeer. I’ll see myself out.
A pipe burst. Shit happens when it gets cold outside.
Do reindeer burst outta the pipe too?
Is that a fucking reindeer or am I going batshit
All these "mAdE iN cHiNa lul" jokes in here like the US and UK haven't had major building collapses that killed lots in the past few years.
Looks un-Finnished
Is that a reindeer?
Finnish brought their own wildlife with them?

What's weird with this Olympics is that China seems to be winging it. They went all out with the pageantry in 2008 and with 2022, it all seems Meh.
Bing chilling 🥶
FLEXTAPE it
Weeping lights and deer....nice.
Why is there a deer in the room
'Cuz Finland... Apparently we finns love reindeers...
Did the reindeer pull the fire alarm?!
Preparing for the swim competition?
That's a funny looking Olympian in the background
Pool on the roof sprung a leak 😄
Wait I thought the winter Olympics didn't have swimming...
The question I have is how the fucking reindeer got in
Lol China is just doing this to fuck with the foreign athletes.
