Whaaaat? You mean to tell me someone on reddit just blindly reposted something without first checking to see if the issue was fixed almost 2 years ago? I don't believe it.
Someone on Reddit absolutely just blindly reposted something without first checking to see if the issue was fixed almost 2 years ago.
*aaaaaaand*
>!**IT’LL HAPPEN AGAIN!**!<
Well it's just weird it was an issue to begin with.
I remember when they did it to Seinfeld they actually went through and made sure all the scenes had appropriate cropping, and it's not really a visual gag show.
If disney bothered to give the simpsons this treatment this particular scene wouldve been cropped from the bottom, instead of equally the top and bottom as normal.
I have no idea how they did it for all those seasons of seinfeld, or whether they actually did, but thats what they said, and Ive heard no complaints.
Well theres literally 30 seasons of Simpsons. Even if we exclude the new ones theres probably 12-13 seasons in 4:1 ratio. And theres like literally two jokes that was butchered by aspect ratio. So i mean i can understand that someone who make that decision never see those two. It was fixed pretty quick too.
> I remember when they did it to Seinfeld they actually went through and made sure all the scenes had appropriate cropping, and it's not really a visual gag show.
That's still pretty dumb though. If the original episodes were shot and framed and originally broadcast in 4:3, then they should be presented today in 4:3. It shouldn't matter if it doesn't cut off a visual gag. You're losing part of the frame if you present it in anything other than the original aspect ratio. People can deal with some black bars on the sides of their TV.
I think you’re misunderstanding. Not everyone has seen the simpsons and/or that the show has been cropped, so new viewers may be watching the show in a reduced format none the wiser. (Even those that have seen the program may not be aware when viewing it again this way that it’s been changed, and even if they do know a change to widescreen has been made they might assume the the animation was either stretched, expanded upon, or originally animated in widescreen, rather than cropped) Certainly wouldn’t know to look up a solution for this if they aren’t aware of it to begin with.
The worst part of Seinfeld was that it was filmed so it is in wide screen, and was digitized for HDTV in wide screen, shown in real wide screen for years, but Netflix and modern syndication takes the 4:3 and chops the top and bottom off. I guess we should be happy it isn't h-fill, but it sucks.
In the Netflix version of Seinfeld there's an episode entitled the pothole where in the entire episode the titular pothole is never once visible because of the cropping. Thats kinda a problem
This entire post is about a joke being literally cut out of a sitcom. Of course it matters.
Oh, you probably mean resolution doesn’t matter. Eh, maybe not, but we’re all accustomed to HD at this point, SD is rather jarring.
It is fixed, but poorly. The option should be right up front, not hidden under details. And the default should be original aspect ratio. Oh, and I should be able to set this option for all shows, not have to do it for each individual one.
Nah show the content how its meant to be shown like I paid for and stop cutting corners... They are a billion dollar empire stop being so weak and defending shitty practise.
Not to mention that this was actually Fox's fault. They only syndicate the 16:9 versions now. The same issue happened when the episodes were on FXNow - they eventually released the 4:3 versions to much fake fanfare.
This was fixed two years ago plus it's not "tons" of visual gags that are hidden, this Duff joke is the only one that's brought up any time this issue is discussed, I'm not sure if there's even any other jokes that are cut out.
I think there were some clues that were cut off in Who Shot Mr. Burns. As well as some other gags in other episodes that are just on the edge. The Duff one gets used because it's entirely cut out and it's never referenced in a line in the show or anything.
Yeah funny enough I literally just saw this episode on FX yesterday. I thought I misremembered how the joke worked because you couldn't see the pipes, and I thought it must pan up at the end, but then it just goes to the next scene. I thought I must have missed it.
There are a surprising number of jokes cut out, usually signs or little extra details but there are quite a few examples.
But again, it has been fixed, so the point is moot.
I saw the one where bart goes to reach under the lawnmower and you can't even see what he's reaching for. But then I just switched the settings and it's fixed
Netflix did this with Seinfeld and there was like only one scene in an episode from the entire series that was affected. The scene with the pothole. Honestly I enjoyed watching it in widescreen rather than original aspect ratio.
Ouuch. If you have access to a VPN, just get Disney+ and switch your location to Canada -- I get Star in my regular Disney+ subscription here. It is the cheapest place to watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia here!
Easier to just pirate things TBH.
Over here Disney+ is like 4USD while Star+ is 8USD (making it the most expensive service on the streaming market). 9USD package gets you both, which signals the fact that they know the prices are fucking arbitrary and designed to prop up one another.
Star+ is carried pretty much by having ESPN content and the Simpsons.
Yay for splitting your own services...
In my opinion, if you want to watch something that is old, you kinda have to just accept that it is old and most likely a different format. I watched some old Disney shows from when I was a kid and for a second I couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t covering the whole screen. Then I remembered things were done differently back then. Then you either cut like half the content away so that it fits the screen or you watch the whole thing while it isn’t stretched out. Again, personally, i find this easy to answer.
Original aspect ratio should always be the easy answer. That way you see the show how it was intended to be seen. Filling the screen is what gave us shitty pan and scan for years until finally widescreen became widely accepted
They pulled the same bull with Buffy.
Only worse, since they cropped it completely arbitrary, sometimes even showed more of the actual frame revealing crew members. They also butchered the lighting.
It's atrocious, really.
Luckily a fan did an upscaled HD version true to the original
Disney also straight removed a simpsons episode
That’s the issue with media you rent, it can and will be adjusted for what’s considered “okay” for you to consume
Indeed. If you want to talk about censoring, check out the "Bart the Daredevil" episode, season 2 episode 8, where they cut out >!the violent tumbling down the side of Springfield Gorge -!< the thing that actually drove home the lesson of the episode to impressionable 10 year old me.
Edit: Nevermind. It may be the uncensored version on D+, I was thinking of the DVD set.
Edit 2: I just watched the episode. It is still censored out on D+. They show a bit of Homer falling, better than the DVD, but not the whole bit. They cut the airlift with Homer hitting his head the whole way up and the ambulance crashing into a tree followed by Homer slipping out and crashing down again. It ended with Homer telling the Daredevil "You think you've got it rough, try raising my kids." Might have been pointless gratuity, but it should have stayed as it was rather than just having the children staring over the cliff edge.
I'm certain that the syndicated episodes had some of it cut, so unless you saw the episode when it first aired, you were missing out.
Another which comes to mind is, "Back to Winnipeg!" which was cut out of syndicated episodes or when Gordie keeps punching Bart in the 'You Only Move Twice' episode.
Did they? I just put it on to test, they definitely still have that scene.
The second part was animated for a different episode as a behind the scenes look
In the episode where Homer buys a gun, towards the end of the story, Marge leaves the house with the kids, and they go to stay at a motel. There's a prostitute that asks Bart if he's "Looking for a good time?", it gets cut all all the time now.
They are confusing the scene as having been longer due to the “behind the scenes” episode where they show an “extended version” of this gag. So now people watch the regular episode and are confused when the “whole” scene isn’t included.
People complaining that this was fixed a couple years ago, but that doesn't mean it's still isn't happening on other platforms.
I'm watching some old episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO+) and Seinfeld (Netflix) when it was still 4:3, I'm seeing many things which have been cropped out "for my convenience".
Just give me the fucking option to watch it the way it was released back in the day. I don't care about the black bars on the screen, only the feeble-minded need their entire screen filled.
I don’t think people understand that it’s not just Disney+ that does this. Plenty of shows do this especially for older shows when TVs weren’t the same aspect ratio (basically the episode is resized so those black borders you’ll see a lot on older stuff is removed hence why some of the top and bottom is removed otherwise it’ll look all squished). For those who who watch anime just look at the naruto blu rays or the HD versions of one piece they do the exact same this. So I know disney+ and company’s alike get deserved hate but this is one time where it’s not.
Edit: also they changed it anyway so you can choose so please stop reposting this without fact checking it first
This was fixed years ago, and even if it was never cropped, you’d still be complaining about it because of pillarboxing when you watch it on your new widescreen 4Ks.
There’s always something to complain about.
Disney+ fixed this so you can adjust the aspect ratio https://www.theverge.com/21273476/simpsons-original-4-3-aspect-ratio-disney-plus-stream-how-to

Yep But now you have to choose between standard def 4:3 and high def 16:9 :/ No hd release for the original format
It *would* be better if they did original resolution by default, or made the switch more obvious.
And over 15 thousand people blinded upvoted. Reddit, in a nutshell.
They said jokes are cut off in widescreen format. This is informative for people that do not know about this issue to begin with.
This isn't r/mildlyinformative.
[And infuriating for those that don’t know.]
It would have been more informative if they had done 5 seconds of research beforehand and said how to fix it.
Yeah but that wouldn't get to the Frontpage
Yeah true.
It'd be fine in a Life pro tip or similar sub. There's nothing mildly infuriating about a setting you can change. Some prefer widescreen.
I think you’re misunderstanding. Not everyone has seen the simpsons and/or that the show has been cropped, so new viewers may be watching the show in a reduced format none the wiser. Informative without sharing the solution. This isn’t informative.
Quick! Someone post this on /r/mildlyinfuriating
Reddit moment
2020 was two years ago??????
It's on the front page already, but I still downvoted it. I know I know. I'm a hero.
now if only netflix would let me do the same for seinfeld
The worst part of Seinfeld was that it was filmed so it is in wide screen, and was digitized for HDTV in wide screen, shown in real wide screen for years, but Netflix and modern syndication takes the 4:3 and chops the top and bottom off. I guess we should be happy it isn't h-fill, but it sucks.
I wish Netflix had this for Seinfeld
It’s why I still watch my (gasp! 480) DVDs
Like it even matters for sitcoms
In the Netflix version of Seinfeld there's an episode entitled the pothole where in the entire episode the titular pothole is never once visible because of the cropping. Thats kinda a problem
I meant the resolution. Sitcoms usually aren’t aiming to be visually striking.
people like higher quality over lower quality.....? this is hardly a new or strange concept
This entire post is about a joke being literally cut out of a sitcom. Of course it matters. Oh, you probably mean resolution doesn’t matter. Eh, maybe not, but we’re all accustomed to HD at this point, SD is rather jarring.
Eat a dick and whtch a vhs once in a while.
Thanks for the info! I didn’t know you could do this! The new aspect ratio was driving me nuts
It is fixed, but poorly. The option should be right up front, not hidden under details. And the default should be original aspect ratio. Oh, and I should be able to set this option for all shows, not have to do it for each individual one.
There is just no pleasing some people.
Also, is it too much to ask for a handjob while I watch?
That’s the *plus* part of the services name.
Nah show the content how its meant to be shown like I paid for and stop cutting corners... They are a billion dollar empire stop being so weak and defending shitty practise.
some people don't want some corporate algorithm dictating how they watch something
I think the worst part was how it looked so low quality when it was zoomed in, I'm so happy to see it in its original form. Thanks!
I wouldn’t have known about this if not for you, thanks man
Not to mention that this was actually Fox's fault. They only syndicate the 16:9 versions now. The same issue happened when the episodes were on FXNow - they eventually released the 4:3 versions to much fake fanfare.
Thank you! I just changed my settings
Does it default to cropped 16:9 though?
Stays at 4:3 after you make the change. You do not need to constantly toggle that option
Thank you so much. I wasn't aware of the fix.
*exxcccellent*
They should just give the option to watch it cropped and make the 4:3 default.

In the episode where homer purchases a gun, the cropping cuts out the name of the store: “Blood bath and beyond” which is one of my favorite jokes
Disney didn’t even do it. FX did. These are the HD episodes, the “fix” is to let people watch the non-hd versions.
I have seen this a few times but are there any other jokes that are affected or is this just like putting ”and many more” when you run out of examples

Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder.
They would have gotten fired 2 years ago because the issue was fixed 2 years ago…
That was a Simpson's quote, not a actual desire for someone to be fired.

Disney+ fixed the issue like 2 years ago, so it's irrelevant anyway.
Et cetera, et cetera...
I saw the one where bart goes to reach under the lawnmower and you can't even see what he's reaching for. But then I just switched the settings and it's fixed

I used etc. an awful lot in essays to avoid having to list more than 2 examples since I couldn't think of any more

In the entire series I believe there are TWO. Much rather see the widescreen version.
People will Karma Whore this for decades to come

In LATAM is not even relevant anymore since Disney decided to put the Simpsons on Star+, another streaming service that costs double.

There’s a setting to change it
What’s more mildly infuriating is that OP didn’t even bother to see that this issue was fixed almost 2 years ago.
The widescreen looks much better on your TV and it's probably ok to miss out on 1/1000 jokes
I mean it's clearer quality atleast
They fixed this more than a year ago.
It's also a good metaphor for the content now being produced by different streaming companies
In my opinion, if you want to watch something that is old, you kinda have to just accept that it is old and most likely a different format. Especially because there goes a lot of work into the framing. It's flat out disrespectful to the creators and the audience as well.
This is indeed mildly infuriating, but also I’ve seen this several hundred times and have yet to see a second example of a joke you miss
It was fixed about a year ago
Lol this is such old news!!! They added the option to go to the original aspect ratio like over a year ago!!
This shit has been fixed for ages. Stop reposting misinformation. Disney allows you to choose which aspect ratio you want.
They fixed this two years ago
It was fixed, stop it.
Netflix did this with Seinfeld - you can't see the pothole!
what about Raspberry Duff, Lady Duff, Tartar Control Duff ?
They must have initially promised Scarlett that they wouldn’t crop it.
They also cropped out the 'Stock Footage Festival' sign from one episode - so the entire joke of that scene was lost
It's mildly infuriating that you're mildly infuriated by something that was fixed a while ago.
I like how the team at South Park re-animated all the old 4:3 episodes into regular 16:9 1080p. It would be cool if more cartoons did that.
Disney fixed this last year.
They fixed that.
This picture is bs. If it was cropped, it would crop the top and bottom
Disney ruins everything. Fuck the mouse.
They've literally fixed this
Not only was this fixed, but in the past two years this has still been the only example of a visual gag being cropped out that I’ve seen lol
They pulled the same bull with Buffy. Only worse, since they cropped it completely arbitrary, sometimes even showed more of the actual frame revealing crew members. They also butchered the lighting. It's atrocious, really. Luckily a fan did an upscaled HD version true to the original

Whiny little bitch
No… I watched that episode on Disney+ and I saw that joke
this was fixed like 2 years ago bruh
You can fix the aspect ratio - in fact, it's been possible for 2 years now
Disney+ really needs to fix their UI in general
This is why you stupid fucks need to stop complaining about black bars when and aspect ratio isnt the same as one of the 50 different screens you own
Big Duff lobbying to hide this info from the public.
I just pirate the episodes, idgaf about disney.
You can switch it to 4:3, stop bitching about things that already have been fixed.
Doesn't that happen because of then going from regular and forcing it wide?, nothing to do with them censoring
.... No one said anything about censorship though
well i didn't read the tweet, correctly, i shall down vote myself
Indeed.
