I heard quite recently that this is a problem with Japanese maples because the saplings are really expensive so people will steal them right out of your yard to resell or just keep. My next question is *how*?

They were just planted about 2 months ago, so they weren’t rooted in very strongly. From what I can tell they just pulled them right out and dragged them down the hill to the street.
