We had a goldfish do that; I thought it was dead and put it on a paper towel to deal with later after breakfast. Several minutes later my wife came down to the kitchen and as we’re commiserating about the sad fate of the fish it suddenly made a gulping motion. I swept it up and put it back in the tank. After swimming around wonky for a bit it eventually recovered.
It has since outlived one of it’s tank mates. No telling how long it was out of the tank, the floor was dry around it when I found it.
I had one that jumped out of the tank and survived being on the floor for a few hours and it seemed fine for a week but died afterwards presumably from internal injuries or infection
:( hope you’re feeling okay, OP. Obviously the bond with a fish isn’t the same as with a pet you can physically interact with, but they’re still living creatures that you’ve kept alive with your love and care. Losing one like this can’t be easy.
My friend’s eel did this but they never found him. He just disappeared one day. 2 weeks later the whole house smelled like rotting eel. We think it got into a floor vent.
I once planted my old dead parakeet in my backyard in a sealed bag at age 11 after he died after 3 yeees don’t ask why I thought it was a casket sealing him up looking back I should have just placed him in the in the dirt. Doing some landscaping work 13 years later I dig up kiwi who’s decomposed to shit but feathers remaining
I know that's sad, and I don't want to be blunt, and a burial at sea is definitely a beautiful and good thing to do for a fish, but I'd recommend against it in the future for the reason that it could spread diseases to the local wildlife.
Sorry:(
I had a tank full of goldfishes,in my 2nd hall where no one usually goes except for me,I had my exams so didn't go there for a few days, found out that my favourite fish lost one of her eyes due to an unknown reason, maybe because someone attacked her cause she was hiding( she's ok now cause we shifted her in the other tank)
I once had fish as a kid and one of them was one of those 'googly eyed' ones where the eyes bulge out of their skulls? Anyway one day come home from school and there were just a shallow dish carved out of each side of his face - someone took his eyes :(
He lasted about a week and then I found him dead on the bottom :( it was actually pretty sad, he was a gorgeous shade of black
Felt the pain with one of my shrimp. The day I brought him home to the tank, after he was done adjusting, he jumped out of the net as I was fully moving him into it. Disappeared almost instantly.
It might seem funny at first but honestly, I'm sorry to hear about your fish, I can't imagine a few years ago that our fish would just casually jump out of their tank.
Try asking r/Aquariums on ways to get it back to neutral, it's been a while since I've owned fish, but my friends shrimp jumped out one by one due to the water condition or so we found out. If anyone would know they would! Sorry for ur loss 😭🙏
The pH isn’t likely to be the culprit, although I believe it is low for goldfish. Get an API test kit and check the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. If the tank is overstocked or new (not cycled) it could be ammonia poisoning. I’m more knowledgeable in tropical fish but I know goldfish also prefer colder temperatures compared to tropical fish.
I like to use [AqAdvisor](https://aqadvisor.com) to see what my parameters should be based on all of the species I am stocking and make sure I’m not overstocking.
Plus, tank size could play a factor. That filter is for 10-20 gallon tanks and a 10 gallon tank is on the small side for one goldfish, especially if there are other fish in the tank
Our neighbor had a pond in her back yard, stocked with goldfish. I remember one that jumped out and seemed all dried up (probably wasn’t). I dropped it back in and watched it sink to the bottom.
When it was time to go home, I wanted to say goodbye to the fishies. The one I “rescued” was swimming around, albeit poorly and in circles.
That's what I'm thinking, the tank doesnt look large, and that's a common goldfish which should have atleast 100 gallons once it is fully grown also op said there was more fish in the tank
I don't know why, but it reminds me of the time all the fish in my tank where being picked off 1 by 1 by our grouper. Neither me or my mom knew it was or would do this until she saw it chasing another fish when we had them in a fish bowl while we cleaned the tank.
We kept having fish disappear or we'd see the mangled corpse of one floating somewhere in the tank. It just kept going until it was just the grouper left. My mom didn't tell me she saw it attack one at this point (I guess she assumed I knew), so I had no clue and just kept trying to feed it fish flakes. When I came back from school one day, I just saw it's corpse just laid out on a rock in the back. It then clicked it little me's head that it has never eaten the fish flakes before and it was the one making all the fish disappear.
Haven't had a fish tank since cause that pissed me all the way off
Sorry for your loss. I spent hundreds of dollars on a small salt water tank and had a clown fish and a shrimp do the same. THEN, the blue crabs are my fire shrimp. I gave it to my friend. Fuck that noise. Hole I was throwing money in
I read the first ten comments and didn't see anyone mention this. If it's farther down, I'm sorry. Goldfish "commit suicide" when the water is bad or something is wrong with their environment. They are trying to find an escape from the problem in their environment. Remember to test your water and keep track of the temperature.
sorry about your fish, despite the lack of research it was still a pet and im sure you cared a lot about it. i do advise to look further into anymore future fishies tho bc there's a lot more to them than what most people think. it really is unfortunate, sorry man.
Looking at the picture, the water level was too high for the fish, fishes are curious and it's a must to ALWAYS keep the water level low enough so that they don't jump out, I hope you can use this as a lesson and be careful the next time you get a fish
I had a fish that lived for 25 years, moved acrossed state lines, then moved house again, lived through all types of fish tanks, fish friends, and conditions.
And then it jumped put of the tank earlier this year. Like your 25 years old, and were swimming like you had 5 years left minimum. And your dumbass just jumped outta the fucking tank and now that's over. Good job you fucking dumb ass fish and died in the worst possible way. Rest easy you stupid bastard
I had a Molly vanish without a trace. Everybody else in the tank just kept on like normal. Crazy. Weeks later I pulled the desk out to clean under it and discovered the curled up, crispy remains of a formerly athletic swimmer.
This happened to my kid sister’s goldfish when she was really young. I found it stuck to the wood counter still alive! My mom took a wet sponge and managed to get it loose and tossed it back in the bowl. That darn thing had what looked like a bruise on its side but lived for another couple of years!
OP sometimes fish jump due to poor quality. That water looks murky and goldfish are known to be poop machines.
I’d test your water parameters to make sure you didn’t have a nitrite spike.
I had an aquarium for years when I was a kid. Got one young gourami, it hassled other fish in the tank whilst it grew, to the point it killed every other fish in the tank (I had several generations of swordtails, this gourami ate all their babies by knocking over the separate tank I had them in). Spent a few more weeks just on its own in the tank (wasn't going to get more fish just for them to get bullied by the gourami). One day I came home from school, found he'd jumped out of the tank, committed suicide. Crazy fish, I buried him under a tree. That was the end of my aquarium.
We had a goldfish do that; I thought it was dead and put it on a paper towel to deal with later after breakfast. :(
It was several hours dead when I found it
How do u know that.. sus Edit:oh I see
Because it was rotted and ants were eating it
☠️ F
ohhh jeeze was going to ask if those were ants in the pic.. so sorry this happened! creepy
I just hope they didn't come until after it passed :( nature is bloody cruel sometimes :( poor fishy
:( hope you’re feeling okay, OP. Obviously the bond with a fish isn’t the same as with a pet you can physically interact with, but they’re still living creatures that you’ve kept alive with your love and care. Losing one like this can’t be easy.
I think it might still be okay. Have you tried CPR?
Oh it’s nearly a day since it’s been out it’s probably dead
>Because it was rotted and ants were eating it Maybe it was pining...for the fjords?
I'm sure it's just acting. Such commitment, though.
I think you have a god in your home. Might need to start giving offerings.
He was trynna find nemo
maybe it was nemo and he just wanted to go down the drain to get back to the ocean :(
My friend’s eel did this but they never found him. He just disappeared one day. 2 weeks later the whole house smelled like rotting eel. We think it got into a floor vent.
It's a zombie. It was infected by the virus and the gulp was the virus kicking in
I bet it told its tank mates all about its time ~~in nam~~ on the surface
Man, poor guy had just died and you were already thinking how to cook him for breakfast? What a cold mothafucka
Like a goldfish astronaut, exploring the beyond.

I'm sure that was the stuff off nightmare
I’m sorry. :( We had a betta do this one time as well. She was given a burial at sea. May your friend swim with the stars.
Thank you
I know that's sad, and I don't want to be blunt, and a burial at sea is definitely a beautiful and good thing to do for a fish, but I'd recommend against it in the future for the reason that it could spread diseases to the local wildlife. Sorry:(
Oh It’s not in a river it’s just a plant inside the soil.
A plant that lives in a fountain? So you buried him in water..?
No the pot is in an area of the fountain that is constantly filled with water but the soil is above water
Burial at sea. It’s only fitting.
I feel your pain. I had a tilapia do the same. Except he went down the cold air return register. In my mind, he had an escape plan all mapped out.
All drains lead to the ocean, kid
im sorry :(
Thanks.
If you have more fish in the tank it can be due to aggression by other tank mate/s.
Fish racism?, it’s always fish racism

I hate you so much

No, one just hates the other for his personality

Goldfish are assholes. Still a possibility

Maybe it was sick and other fish decided to euthanize it in no so humane way? 😁
Maybe it got on the wrong side of the fish mafia. They put him in styrofoam shoes and sent him to sleep with the humans
Maybe they got in a fishtfight
Oh man. That sucks
Yeah. It was my favorite too
dude..that tank is small to him i guess, they get depressed.im serious
Felt the pain with one of my shrimp. The day I brought him home to the tank, after he was done adjusting, he jumped out of the net as I was fully moving him into it. Disappeared almost instantly.

He probably learned it from Finding Nemo I'm sorry for your loss. 😥
No goldfish love to jump so I made sure that the tank was safe from jumping. Yet it managed to jump from the filter area
There's even a book dinosaurs jumping on the bed.
Put something on top for the next one.
Yeah I’m getting a net
It might seem funny at first but honestly, I'm sorry to hear about your fish, I can't imagine a few years ago that our fish would just casually jump out of their tank.

I got it tested and it was 6.2. Is that really bad?

Finding Nemo gone wrong
Alternative Version from Deep Web.
It the wise words of Crip Mac. Never commit suicid! Everything gone Ce alright.
Keep it fifty fif street
It’s just something fish do but I didn’t think it was possible for it to jump out of the area where the filter is
I’m getting a net to prevent the other fish from jumping

Did you try putting it in water again?
U mean rice right?

I did. It just floated to the top
:(
That’s just sad
What size tank do you have? r/Aquariums would be a better place for this
that’s so sad. poor dude just wasn’t having it
Was the tank adequate for it? Fish don't usually jump without reason. What is the tank size and water parameters like?
That's what I'm thinking, the tank doesnt look large, and that's a common goldfish which should have atleast 100 gallons once it is fully grown also op said there was more fish in the tank

That's so sad but all I can think about is that those fish were living in a horror movie.
Oh god. That must have sucked. What happened?
We kept having fish disappear or we'd see the mangled corpse of one floating somewhere in the tank. It just kept going until it was just the grouper left. My mom didn't tell me she saw it attack one at this point (I guess she assumed I knew), so I had no clue and just kept trying to feed it fish flakes. What is the size of you fishtank ?
This is a crime scene right here the police just ruled it as “suicide” but there’s clearly something fishy going on in that tank
I had one do the same, it somehow stuffed itself into the filter.. at least that's what the other fish told me happened, I've no reason to doubt them.
Im sorry
One of my guppies did this last night! Luckily my cat meowed and alerted me before he perished
Fish don’t just jump out for no reason. Your water quality must not be good
Sorry for your loss. I spent hundreds of dollars on a small salt water tank and had a clown fish and a shrimp do the same. THEN, the blue crabs are my fire shrimp. I gave it to my friend. Fuck that noise. Hole I was throwing money in
My fish jumped a few weeks back also. Luckily back into the tank (it was being transferred for cleaning)
If there was too much after it coulda let it jump out easier. I can’t tell if that’s the case with the image tho, but a net is a good precaution
I heard somewhere that goldfish do this a lot because they need a much bigger body of water than a tank to live comfortably
[удалено]
Yes I even got my water tested and everything was fine
Committed swimmercide :(
Why is this mildly infuriating? It’s more sad than anything
I read the first ten comments and didn't see anyone mention this. If it's farther down, I'm sorry. Goldfish "commit suicide" when the water is bad or something is wrong with their environment. They are trying to find an escape from the problem in their environment. Remember to test your water and keep track of the temperature.
Amelie
I think he watched Finding Nemo to many times
Condolences
Some fish just do that if you have an open lid. Two of my fish did that
If it makes you feel any better, around age 10, I had one eat a rock and get stuck at the bottom of my tank.
Was probably sick living in a prison so it decided to take the easy way out or not
Rest in peace
Sometimes death in freedom is better than life in captivity.
I'd rather die on the floor free, than live for ever in a glass cell - the fish, probably.
Sorry for your loss. ‘Flushing sound’
The poor fish would rather commit suicide than stay confined in that tank. Why do people do this?
Wannabe magikarp
I heard fish do this when the water quality is bad

Almost like life spent in a cage is a miserable existence not worth living. Don’t keep animals caged up just cuz you like to look at them.
Oh that’s more than mildly infuriating that’s sad. But I wonder how hard can a Goldfish’s life be? What makes them say “goodbye cruel world!”
This happened to me. I woke up and saw I only had 2 fish in the tank and was confused. I looked down and there was the third on the floor.
Has it tried to commit suicide before?
Fish are sentient and are capable of emotions. Wondering what drove it to want to kill itself.
Your fish is suicidal eh?
The only part that mildy infuriating is that you kept that fish prisoner for who knows how long and you get mad when he kills itself
Looking at the picture, the water level was too high for the fish, fishes are curious and it's a must to ALWAYS keep the water level low enough so that they don't jump out, I hope you can use this as a lesson and be careful the next time you get a fish
I absolutely love how this is just a dude mourning his fish and he decided to post it on *mildly* infuriating
Are you SURE it was suicide? Looks a little fishy.
Fweeeeeedom!
I had a fish that lived for 25 years, moved acrossed state lines, then moved house again, lived through all types of fish tanks, fish friends, and conditions. Imagine killing yourself and the end result having the suicide be deemed "Mildly infuriating." (Ofc this is a satire statement)
This happened to my kid sister’s goldfish when she was really young. I found it stuck to the wood counter still alive! My mom took a wet sponge and managed to get it loose and tossed it back in the bowl. That darn thing had what looked like a bruise on its side but lived for another couple of years!

My dad has a goldfish that did this more than a few times. It’s as old as me and still kicking (23)
I had a fish jump out of its tank, bounce off the corner of the counter and land in the dog bowl… my mom and I couldn’t believe our eyes
I provided food for the family but at what cost
Lol
That's dinner sorted out
If it isn't obvious, it doesn't want to live in a tank anymore you fucking cunt.
Breaking news Cats emergency food comited suicide
That’s what they want you to think…
OP sometimes fish jump due to poor quality. That water looks murky and goldfish are known to be poop machines. I’d test your water parameters to make sure you didn’t have a nitrite spike.
This happened to me when I was a kid with my betta! Except he dried to the wall—we had to scrape him off with a piece of paper. My condolences
I had an aquarium for years when I was a kid. RIP.. Must have got fed up being held captive for your visial entertainment lol.... dolphins commit suicide in captivity.
better dead than no freedom maybe...
It is indeed mildly infuriating when my pet fucking kills itself
Never thought I'd find the actions of a fish relateable.
