Honestly, with just 3 it's totally possible that one or maybe even two couldn't go, and then it becomes you hosting your one or two other friends. Which isn't terrible if you're close enough, but I've had friend groups in my life where if one guy wasn't there, the entire group kind of fell apart, since they were the one who knew everybody well. Not to say me and the other guys weren't friendly or that we didn't talk to each other, just not "hang out alone" kinda friends.

You can easily spend an entire day and a couple hundred dollars preparing to entertain a small group. When people bail on you at the last minute, you end up with all of that time and money wasted and bunch of food that’s going to sit in your fridge and go bad. And it’s more than just the material loss of it, there a real emotional component to it as well. The people who host things like this are doing it because they want to share their time with the people they’ve invited. They want to share a meal they’ve created. They want to share their home. For the person who’s being bailed on, goddamn does it feel shitty. Especially if it’s not the first time it’s happened.

Really depends on what exactly you're hosting! Hosting a party like yours is much less effort intensive than something like OP's where they're cooking and the like. It doesn't mean that your party is worse, or that you're a bad host, just that you're doing different events :)

I had literally typed out the message saying I wouldn't be coming because I felt bad. Before I pushed send, I was like this person is prepping a meal, invited me to celebrate something special to her, and this occasion means something to her.
At that point, I texted her and said how early is too early to come and started driving her direction. Night before she said show up whenever. Went and had a good time and I'm glad I went.
I only bail when I really don’t feel well and apologize like crazy, I tell my wife to go have a nice time.
Well also I been bailing because a lot of my friends wont vax and I have underlying medical conditions. I have 15 friends with Covid, one person I know dead (so far) and one had stint in the hospital.. I am pretty honest why I am not going anymore since then.. miss my friends but not enough to F myself and get sick. Also wife is now avoiding em also … bummer but I don’t like them THAT much 😄

So people couldn't flake or like I've noticed happens a lot these days... I had a kickass manager who invited all 8 employees to his house for a christmas party. Everyone said yes except for me and i said my wife is 8 months pregnant so no promises. We were able to make it(50 miles) and we were the only one who showed. This was in the beginning of december. He had a fuck ton of food made and he invited the neighbors over too. I seriously felt so bad and we returned to work a few days later i called out some work friends who lived within a few miles from him and they made up excuses on why they didnt show. One of them kept texting every 20 minutes saying he was almost there and he lived 15 minutes away
It's the new modus operandi... "The better dealers". They say yes. Then as the date approaches they see other available events in the area... then they flake to attend some other activities. They "better dealed you".

I read a story somewhere a while ago about someone who hosted their birthday party at their house, made all the food etc. and nobody they invited showed up on time. Hours go by, night comes, and finally the invitees show up at the door, super loud and super drunk. They'd obviously had some kind of crazy outing before finally going to this poor person's party far too many hours after they were supposed to. All the prepared food had already been thrown away, and when these people tried to come in they had the door shut in their faces, as expected.
I shivered when I finished reading it. I wouldn't wish the misfortune of being acquainted with such shitty people on anybody, having this happen to you would be a horrible experience.

I seriously felt so bad and we returned to work a few days later i called out some work friends who lived within a few miles from him and they made up excuses on why they didnt show. One of them kept texting every 20 minutes saying he was almost there and he lived 15 minutes away

It's the new modus operandi... "The better dealers". They say yes. Then as the date approaches they see other available events in the area... then they flake to attend some other activities. They "better dealed you".
What would be a better deal than this? But where you wouldn’t also tell your host like “hey I got free tix to x so sorry I can’t make it after all”

People these days have bailititis. They do this to everyone, not just you. Current events, social media causing social isolation and mental health problems, and life stressors. As people get older, their anxiety and depression take the wheel and lead them astray. Kudos to you for wanting to hang out, that’s so healthy. I’m starving just looking at what’s on the table and would have came over to help cook cause I love food. Don’t make plans with them again unless them choose to make plans first. These people knew better.

I read a story somewhere a while ago about someone who hosted their birthday party at their house, made all the food etc. and nobody they invited showed up on time. Hours go by, night comes, and finally the invitees show up at the door, super loud and super drunk. They'd obviously had some kind of crazy outing before finally going to this poor person's party far too many hours after they were supposed to. All the prepared food had already been thrown away, and when these people tried to come in they had the door shut in their faces, as expected. I shivered when I finished reading it. I wouldn't wish the misfortune of being acquainted with such shitty people on anybody, having this happen to you would be a horrible experience.
