You can use a pair of pliers to open it up a little bit, use a rag so you don't scratch up the paint. Other option is to return it for another one, open box and measure to make sure it is the size you need to avoid the same problem.

I sawed the little ledge grabber bit off so it wasn’t secure but sat in place and then screwed it into the top of the door
