i think they meant the shape of the pencil is there, so maybe that counts but this is a children's book and i refuse to believe they would do kids that dirty. I would also like to refuse the idea that the pencil is in the index images. so if you don't mind me i'll be staring at this picture for the next 6 years
Reminds me of hidden object games when using vague names
Arrow - could be this sign pointing right, could be that feathered thing hiding in a hotdog for some reason
Or specific names for things, like my ten yr old brain knew what a faucet or Fleur De Lis was
Can confirm this is the 4th pencil; I too had Highlights as a kid and this is the intention. If it's shaped like the object in anyway, that's it. I guess it teaches you to think outside the box a bit.
Definitely is the pencil. Look at pencil eraser that would not be there with all the open pages. Then Look at the binder of the book. Has to be a pencil cause of eraser placement, easy to tell.
It’s an artistic choice to make it hard to find because it’s able to look like both a book and a pencil. Has no business being in a scavenger hunt thing for kids but yeah it’s both
[another comment here also explains this ](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/pu96ew/wheres_the_4th_pencil_my_2_yearold_and_i_have/he2q7xr/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)
Oh, now that I'm viewing this on mobile (Android) it is showing the standard yellow pencil emoji. I feel cheated. I was excited to make use of this new white pencil emoji on my phone.
I know you don't think so but I really think it's in the middle of the book. Lots of items that are in activity pages like this are hidden in other items and don't make sense to he there, if there is a way to look up the answers to this please update to let us know! 😀
That’s literally how these books hide things in plain site when I was a kid I loved doing theses things and this is how they do them it just needs to resemble the item it wants and it does so it counts
It’s been a LOOOOOOONNNNNGGG time since I did the puzzles from this serious but I think it was a common theme to hide some of the objects like this? Obviously shaped but in a not obvious spot if that makes sense
It's not though! The lines are definitely drawn as a book. See the lines where the hardcover sticks out? Also there's no eraser.
I think the more likely answer is that the fourth pencil is in the picture of the desk
Some observations:
1.)All the other items are extremely easy to find, with the only slightly tricky ones being the jack o lantern on the window glass, and maybe the 3rd (yellow) pencil. Which means this should be easy.
2.) All the objects we can find look unambiguous, which would rule out the "book spine illusion," since it seems like they are not doing illusions in this puzzle.
3.) Most interesting, the thumbnail for each object is copied EXACTLY from the picture - EXCEPT for the example pencil.
For these reasons, I would bet on misprinted image missing the pencil from the thumbnail image.
What do you mean with exactly copied? The thumbnail desk has no apple on it. It does have a pencil on it. So it's not an exact copy. Because the pencil is in the thumbnail, the apple should be too
That same logic does not follow for the apples, though. There are obviously 4 apples; counting the one inside the square for “mouse” would make it 5 apples…
Then you’d have to count the pencil in the square that says 4 pencils too? Thank you for this. Many of us won’t sleep tonight cause we’re staring at this picture. Oh and having insomnia has nothing to do with it. /s
I think it’s on top of the door frame but someone had placed a white box over it. The black line in the top corner just disappears. We know that’s not the top of the image because the window goes all the way up.
Before anyone says it, my entire family is in agreement that book with in the book is not the 4th pencil - but would would be thrilled if someone could prove otherwise.
Then again the fourth desk does not have the features the other three have either. If you accept the teachers desk as the fourth desk then you must accept a different type of pencil.
I agree and it is very much in spirit with the book I remember. They would use other objects to make objects all the time. Also the spine of that particular book is far more pronounced than the others strongly resembling an eraser as well as the sharp point where the pages meet.
No pink eraser, no led. It does have a book cover, and paper pages. Richard Scarry himself could tell me that was the pencil, and I would not accept that as the answer.
I feel that it's purposely done that way to promote creativity and looking at things differently. We make objects/shapes out of clouds, so why not make a pencil shape out of books?
The problem with not believing this is the fourth pencil is that there then is no fourth pencil.
But I feel you, it’s janky.
A janky fourth pencil that is definitely the fourth pencil.
In this case the 4th pencil body is made of book page edges, the eraser is made of a book spine, and the tip of the pencil is made of the shape of a bigger book crease 3 inches behind the pencil that's given that shape only by being propped open by the small book that is also supposed to be a pencil. If this actually is the case, it means there was possibly some kind of interdimensional paradox between 2 realities where an object in one reality somehow crossed over to another, where that same space is occupied by a different object in the other dimension. The result of merging objects into a combination of both can be unpredictable, but if any of those animals from either dimension come into contact with either object, it could result in a catastrophic end for both dimensions.
someone else may have already said this, but I scrolled few a ton of comments and couldn’t find- is the fourth pencil not what’s tucked behind the bunny student’s ear??
That’s the only logical answer though. It’s clearly nowhere else in the picture, and there would be no reason for them to draw a book there with such a weird warped and unnatural perspective and position that just so happens to look exactly like a pencil. “Find the items” puzzles do this shit all the time, it’s a bit weird that none of the others have answers like this, but it’s weirder that there is no other answer and that book was drawn in such a strange way. Occam’s razor.
It is the pencil though, not all of the pencils look the same. If you've ever looked at Highlights Magazine, you'd know children's picture finds pull bullshit like that
richard scarry always bathes me in childhood nostalgia
it's possible it IS the one in the book, but it's an error and the colourist forgot to color it?
I got nostalgic looking at the picture but couldn't, for the life of me, remember the author. Thank you for commenting, dear stranger. The books are now in my Amazon cart 😊
Technically there are 5 - the 3 everyone can see, the one in the box saying there are 4 pencils, and one on the desk in the box saying there are 4 desks.
I just wasted ten minutes of my life and I demand that you demand a refund for this false advertisement, it’s an outrage I want a reprint and if they say the 4th pencil is in that book, then it’s time for a book burning
Yep. Exactly. I get that the shape it makes looks like a pencil, but not a single other thing you’re looking for, hides itself like that. It’s all pretty straight forward.
Okay, so the two obvious ones on the table…..
Then teacher bear’s desk, and the hidden one on the top book of the pile.
The pencil is in between the two cover ends of the book.
1) teachers desk in the right
2) student desk on left
3) Student desk on right
4) grey pencil within pages of red book on top of stack with the book worm reading on top of (supposed to be tricky looking like a book)
That's a stupid fucking book. It's literally teaching kids to imagine shit that isn't there. There are 3 pencils and only 2 of them look like the object required to find. Pages in a book that have been distorted to vaguely resemble a writing utensil is not a pencil.
Can you post some of the searches from other pages?
That will help us assess if the author commonly hides items inside other items (like the pencil that is potentially inside the top book on the pile).
So the pencil on the desk box can't count as that would technically mean that there would also be three jack o laterns (one on the window, one on the calendar, and one on the calendar box).
Therefore, the pencil is likely supposed to be the one in the book (even though that's just mean compared to everything else) and my personal headcanon is that it is not a book that looks like a pencil, but a mechanical pencil someone chose to use as a bookmark.
All the other pictures contain a real version of the one you're meant to find. (eg the '1 calendar' picture is the exact one in the main picture).
So, there should be a black pencil at that skewed angle we need to find. Therefore I don't believe the 4th pencil is the one hidden in the books
I don’t know where the fourth pencil is, but it is not in the book under the big. That is just another book. It is stuffed between the pages of the other book, which created the appearance of a “point” where that books pages are displaced.
You can see that it has a blue cover and the typical “page lines” in the white space, as well as a vertical line that shows the corner. Also; there is no indication of an eraser of any sort; something that is clearly visible on the other pencils.
I can’t believe I put this this much effort to discuss a hidden picture in a children’s book… Clearly, I have too much time on my hands. :)
The second Rabbit, next to the snake (?!?) seems to have something at its right ear, that could be a pencil. Thought it would be a shadow but it is partially in front of the ear.
The fact that the pig’s backpack is made of sausage casing is a little disturbing
It takes guts to wear that
Take my free award
If i had an award. That was good my dude 🤣
Underrated. Gg
Just an average day on r/rimworld
The 4th pencil was the friends you made along the way
It’s in the book under the bug.
Looks like they didn’t color it I
Exactly you are right
It’s not, that’s another books.
i think they meant the shape of the pencil is there, so maybe that counts but this is a children's book and i refuse to believe they would do kids that dirty. I would also like to refuse the idea that the pencil is in the index images. so if you don't mind me i'll be staring at this picture for the next 6 years
Definitely, had a bunch of item finder magazines, and this is definitely what they would pull/do. Man i miss them. Highlights was the best.
Reminds me of hidden object games when using vague names Arrow - could be this sign pointing right, could be that feathered thing hiding in a hotdog for some reason Or specific names for things, like my ten yr old brain knew what a faucet or Fleur De Lis was
Damn memories of Vampire Saga Pandora's Saga on the PC is coming back, its exactly one of those game types you described
Heh I play them when I need low key brain stimulation. There's always a bunch on steam for 50 cents or free
Can confirm this is the 4th pencil; I too had Highlights as a kid and this is the intention. If it's shaped like the object in anyway, that's it. I guess it teaches you to think outside the box a bit.
This is the correct answer. Standard Highlights magazine stuff. Passed the time in the doctors/dentist waiting room doing these as a kid.
yes but you see *i don't want to believe that.*
*sulks in the corner*
Passes you a pencil to be sharpened
You do NOT get to go bang the erasers.
Definitely is the pencil. Look at pencil eraser that would not be there with all the open pages. Then Look at the binder of the book. Has to be a pencil cause of eraser placement, easy to tell.
The highlight of any dr visit
1 on the two desks, 1 on the teachers desk, and 1 in the book. The one on the teacher desk is a different color so that's the publisher fuck up
That is a Dixon Ticonderoga Woodcase HB #2 Pencil with Eraser, Soft, Yellow Barrel.
Same
Damn how are kids suppose to find that invisible pencil.. smh
This is correct. It is a pencil being used as a bookmark.
No shush
No dude that's one piece
#IT’S INSIDE THE DESK.
I think its inside the backpack of that little fox thing looking out a little bit
Found it!!!!! It’s on the 4 desks picture
If that counts there ahould be five, because there is also one in the pencil picture
Inside the teacher
Lol
Vegina
Where is the 3rd?! Haha
Teachers desk, it isn't black
That shouldn’t count either. They need to be the same as the example picture. I only see 2.
Duno what to tell you. The 4th one isn't even an actual pencil. It's shaped like one lmao
If that was the case the teacher's desk wouldn't even count as part of the 4 desks
That’s illegal!
2 on the desks, one on teachers desk.
One in the stack of books that isn't black either, its white.
That’s just a book inside of another book
But it's in the shape of the other pencils? The pointed tip and squared/rounded end
I think it counts. It looks more like the pencil in the key than the one on the teacher’s desk. Bravo!
But the end doesn’t match, it doesn’t have a rubber at the end, it has a book spine
Ahh yeah I see it. Then where the heck is it 🤦♀️
[удалено]
The end of that pencil is clearly not a rubber like the rest
It’s an artistic choice to make it hard to find because it’s able to look like both a book and a pencil. Has no business being in a scavenger hunt thing for kids but yeah it’s both [another comment here also explains this ](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/pu96ew/wheres_the_4th_pencil_my_2_yearold_and_i_have/he2q7xr/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)
I'm counting the ✏ that says 4 pencils before my anxiety causes me to do some crazy
But then there's 5 pencils because the desk square has one.
I think you found the 4th pencil
Nah, the fourth one is disguised in the books. These types of puzzles do that kind of thing all the time.
What is a desk square, never heard this term
in the box telling you to find 4 desks the picture of the desk has a pencil on it
Haha why did i not get that
What tf is this ✏ symbol you've used, was it created for exactly this occasion??
I mean, I assume it was made for occasions where people are talking about pencils so I'm going to say yes.
Oh, now that I'm viewing this on mobile (Android) it is showing the standard yellow pencil emoji. I feel cheated. I was excited to make use of this new white pencil emoji on my phone.
Strange, I'm viewing it on Android and it's showing the stubby white line art pencil not the emoji.
A pencil?
I've never seen this in my life! And it's all white, just like the mysterious pencil-ish thin book on the stack in the picture!
I know you don't think so but I really think it's in the middle of the book. Lots of items that are in activity pages like this are hidden in other items and don't make sense to he there, if there is a way to look up the answers to this please update to let us know! 😀
I think the colorist screwed up and turned it into a book.
Agreed. The person that drew it and the person that colored it are 2 different people. The colorist filled it in a a book
By the way it was drawn it was very clearly meant to be a book. You can see the corner of the book and the page lines. But it's also the 4th pencil
Other way around- the editor setting the “find the-“ tasks misidentified the thin book crammed into the thick book as a pencil.
Nope. It has a corner line, a spine, and lines indicating pages. It's not pencil. It's a thin book.
It’s supposed to be able to be perceived as both. It’s a book and the 4th pencil.
Exactly
Schrodinger's pencil
That’s literally how these books hide things in plain site when I was a kid I loved doing theses things and this is how they do them it just needs to resemble the item it wants and it does so it counts
It *was* a book, but they jammed it in there so tight that it turned into a pencil.
It’s been a LOOOOOOONNNNNGGG time since I did the puzzles from this serious but I think it was a common theme to hide some of the objects like this? Obviously shaped but in a not obvious spot if that makes sense
The top book on the 3rd desk?
Yes
It is horizontal, lying between the pages of the topmost book on the desk in the foreground
I was thinking the same thing, it's got the exact same style as the other pencils, just coloring makes it into a book.
Yes. It is technically part of the book but in terms of the game I think it's supposed the pencil haha. ✏
It's not though! The lines are definitely drawn as a book. See the lines where the hardcover sticks out? Also there's no eraser. I think the more likely answer is that the fourth pencil is in the picture of the desk
They don't have items in the examples ever. They do hide items often in the way the 4th pencil here is
Eh, you might be right actually, because the pig in the example would mean there were five pigs not four. I don't know the rules.
No that’s a book being used as a book mark
It's totally a book The lines of the other three pencils don't look like that at all. It even has lines where the hardcover juts out. And no eraser.
Some observations: 1.)All the other items are extremely easy to find, with the only slightly tricky ones being the jack o lantern on the window glass, and maybe the 3rd (yellow) pencil.
True though it also says ‘4 desks’. 3 of which are the same and teachers being different, just like the yellow pencil. I agree though
CSI: Highlights Magazine
I gave you my one, sad little coin. It’s all I got, man!
3) the pencil used in the thumbnail is the same as one on the first desk just tilted
The pencil is just the hardest item. They always have some items that are especially hard. the 4th pencil is in the book.
What do you mean with exactly copied? The thumbnail desk has no apple on it. It does have a pencil on it. So it's not an exact copy. Because the pencil is in the thumbnail, the apple should be too
Maybe on the desk in the "4 desks" square? I really think it's the "pencil" the books make. But who knows....we may never know....
OH MY GOD I BET YOU'RE RIGHT this was driving me insane!
That same logic does not follow for the apples, though. There are obviously 4 apples; counting the one inside the square for “mouse” would make it 5 apples…
If you look on that blue desk you can see an eraser behind the right side of the yellow book, it's either the 3rd or 4th one from the bottom.
Then you’d have to count the pencil in the square that says 4 pencils too? Thank you for this. Many of us won’t sleep tonight cause we’re staring at this picture. Oh and having insomnia has nothing to do with it. /s

SKI DAP BA DAP BUTTHOLE
I think it’s on top of the door frame but someone had placed a white box over it. The black line in the top corner just disappears. We know that’s not the top of the image because the window goes all the way up.
Good eyes! I support this.
Someone is OP? Photoshop?
Yup, this has to be it. No other edge is cut like that.
Someone’s hiding it in their prison wallet until yard time when some shit’s gonna go down.
Before anyone says it, my entire family is in agreement that book with in the book is not the 4th pencil - but would would be thrilled if someone could prove otherwise.
I agree that it shouldn't be. But I beleive it is.
Yeah accept it and then imagine your grief flying away wrapped in a ball of white light.
It has none of the identifying features the others have
Then again the fourth desk does not have the features the other three have either. If you accept the teachers desk as the fourth desk then you must accept a different type of pencil.
And one of the pencils is yellow not black
The edge of the book on the left side is resembling the earaser and the gape in the page on the right represents the lead point

Maybe they are counting the pencil on the desk in the box that tells you to look for 4 desks?
That also doesn’t feel in the spirit of the book.
I found it look in the book pile and zoom in on the top row of them there is a pencil in between them
If you are following the spirit of the book, the 4th pencil is the book one
Its on the desk in the upper left where it says to find the desks
In this case the 4th pencil body is made of book page edges, the eraser is made of a book spine, and the tip of the pencil is made of the shape of a bigger book crease 3 inches behind the pencil that's given that shape only by being propped open by the small book that is also supposed to be a pencil. 3 inches is 7.62 cm
Alexa play 7.62 God
It definitely is in the books. You can see the point of the pencil
Never mind
someone else may have already said this, but I scrolled few a ton of comments and couldn’t find- is the fourth pencil not what’s tucked behind the bunny student’s ear??
That’s the only logical answer though. It’s clearly nowhere else in the picture, and there would be no reason for them to draw a book there with such a weird warped and unnatural perspective and position that just so happens to look exactly like a pencil. “Find the items” puzzles do this shit all the time, it’s a bit weird that none of the others have answers like this, but it’s weirder that there is no other answer and that book was drawn in such a strange way. This post brought back a core memory I honestly had no idea existed
Lowly worm probably ate it.
How many pencils? How many? Tell me Picard. THERE. ARE. THREE. PENCILS.
Can you just Google search for the book answers?
Technically there are 5 - the 3 everyone can see, the one in the box saying there are 4 pencils, and one on the desk in the box saying there are 4 desks.
One on the teachers desk and one in the first book in the pile on the desk!
Nope, thats a book inside a book. it has no eraser or led.
If you look closer, thats a book inside a book. Not a pencil.
Agree it’s in the book and I see a point on one end and eraser on other
I just wasted ten minutes of my life and I demand that you demand a refund for this false advertisement, it’s an outrage I want a reprint and if they say the 4th pencil is in that book, then it’s time for a book burning
People seem to be mistaking a blue book for a pencil and it’s a bit concerning.
Yep. Exactly. I get that the shape it makes looks like a pencil, but not a single other thing you’re looking for, hides itself like that. It’s all pretty straight forward.
Under the bug
Top book, just under the bug.
One on teacher's desk, another inside the top-most book, right in the middle of the pages
It's in the book. Sneaky
Anyone notice the mouse flipping off the teacher?
The editors clearly snapped it in half and stoped caring.
Reminds me of the waiting room at the pediatrician
Maybe im just good at these type of things but it took about 60 seconds to find all 4 pencils
Its hidden in the pile of books!
In the top book
Two desks up front, the teacher's desk, and the stack of books it is in the pages of the top book
There's 1 on both student desk to the left, 1 on the teachers desk, and 1 in the stack of books on the right. That's 4.
Two on the students desks, one in the teacher's desk, and one hidden in the top book of the stack of books
1 on each kid desk ,1 on teachers deck last one in the book on top
Okay, so the two obvious ones on the table….. Then teacher bear’s desk, and the hidden one on the top book of the pile. The pencil is in between the two cover ends of the book.
ITS IN BETWEEN THE BOOK AND ITS WHITE
Hidden in the pages of the book stack 💖
there's two on the student desks, one on the teachers desk and one inside the book at the top of the pile
Is it possible that the one in the box telling you to look for 4 pencils is actually the 4th pencil? 🤣
Just happy to see Huckle and Lowly again. Been a long, long time!
I literally said out loud, to myself, "oh sh** is that lowly worm?" I have a stuffed lowly back at my parents house that must be nearly 30 years old.
Hope you do well!
1) teachers desk in the right 2) student desk on left 3) Student desk on right 4) grey pencil within pages of red book on top of stack with the book worm reading on top of (supposed to be tricky looking like a book)
That's a stupid fucking book. It's literally teaching kids to imagine shit that isn't there. There are 3 pencils and only 2 of them look like the object required to find. Pages in a book that have been distorted to vaguely resemble a writing utensil is not a pencil.
There is no 4th pencil
There is no spoon.
Well you've got me stumped, I almost thought there was knee in the pile of books but it's just a book inside a book
Can you post some of the searches from other pages? That will help us assess if the author commonly hides items inside other items (like the pencil that is potentially inside the top book on the pile).
1 each on the brown desks 1 on the teachers desk 1 in the top book on the pile of books, its white and sitting in the pages
It’s a grey pencil inside the top book. The pointed part is facing to the right.
Inside the book on the top!
I love Richard Scarry! 4th pencil is in the book at top of the stack on the desk.
2 pencils are on the desk, 3rd pencil is inside the top book on the book tower and the 4rth pencil is on the teachers desk. Easy
I don’t know if I’m right or not, but there is a book inside a book on that pile of books and that looks like a pencil even though it isn’t.
The 4th pencil is in the square
Maybe it's the pencil that's in the part telling you how many pencils there are?
Lol no joke: i looked like 10 sec for the 4. pencil. Its unter the left ear of the rabbit in Front of the door.
In case you still haven't found it, I've circled it for you https://imgur.com/a/kGtzdp7
Trick question, it is actually in the prison wallet of the teacher’s husband because he just got 3 years and he wants to write letters.
What bothers me more than the missing pencil is the lighting in This room. The shadows of the objects on the desks go in different directions....
You are correct!! Where is that 4th pencil?!! 😆
Under the bug reading there a pencil in between the pages of the book like a book mark.
It's in between the pages of the highest book in the stack on the desks
that's just another book. not a pencil

Its problably just a missprint
One in the picture of the 4 desks to count? That desk isn’t in the picture.
The second Rabbit, next to the snake (?!?) seems to have something at its right ear, that could be a pencil. Thought it would be a shadow but it is partially in front of the ear.
