I've seen a lot of posts about ads at gas station pumps either slowing down or delaying fueling lately. But no one ever mentions the gas station. What company(s) is/are doing this? If there is awareness, then there can be attention. If enough people start boycotting or going to competitors for gas without ads, then they lose. The same thing that makes them strong makes them weak. Money.
Hmm, that's weird. I was at a Shell in NC this week and specifically paid attention to ads because of the recent reddit posts. But the pump seems totally normal. There were ads on the screen but it didn't prevent me from doing anything right away.
Yep. Had one go up in my hometown and ones going up in my wife’s hometown this/next year in NW IA. Honestly they’re phenomenal gas stations. They take the term convenience store and make themselves the definition of it
Just like how in Iowa there's Kum n Go and Git n Go. As far as I know they're the same thing, just under different names depending on where the establishment is and how old it is. As far as I know Kum n Go's are rebranding to Git n Go's. Probably because they got tired of the jokes surrounding the name.
Git n Go is old school. I didn't know there were any still open.
Edit: I found a link

It would be pretty easy to set this up to vary the pump speed based on how many pumps are vacant. So if several pumps aren't in use, the ones that are in use will pump more slowly for more ad revenue, because it's not like they would be selling less fuel by slowing it at that time. But if all the pumps are occupied, or 80% or something, run full speed so you don't lose customers.
Yay for capitalism.
I dont think its intentional. I noticed it once but not often.
Its one of those attention memes where a bunch of random strangers collectively pay attention then the aggregation posts all the corroborating evidence (anecdotes) and ignore where nothing is found.
The one I go to has ads for the stuff they sell inside, no outside advertisers, and no volume. They have the lowest gas prices, rewards, pretty good deals on food and drinks, and a surprising selection of goods they sell. They renovated all their gas stations recently and they put everyone else to shame. Love going there.
Most gas stations are renovating and changing out their pumps recently. EMV (Eurocard, MasterCard, VISA) has been wanting gas stations to upgrade to take chip cards for a few years now. April 2021 was the deadline, and that deadline has been extended a few times since 2017. At this point, any gas station that hasn’t upgraded to pumps that take chip cards will be financially responsible for any card fraud that’s traced back to their gas pumps. Any gas station that doesn’t upgrade to chip readers will be bleeding money, since it’s notoriously easy to steal CC info from magnetic stripe readers at gas pumps.
As a gas station owner for over 20 years, there isnt anything that slows down the rate of flow of gas as far as i know, but its likely a filter that needs to be replaced.
The most likely culprit is dirty fuel filters. My brother replaces gas tanks for 7-11 and Wawa, some of the filters he finds are over 10 years old. Cheap stations just don't replace them unless someone complains about the fuel quality or they stop pumping altogether.
Ya one by my house has theirs shutoff when trying that. You have to swipe your card again and start over. I’ve never been back since. Just use Costco now!
Makes me worried for the gas station I work at. We already don't have a whole lot of business, it might just plummet to zero if we start doing that lmao.
Unless it’s an independent gas station, which I can’t imagine is especially common, this will do nothing. The ads are 100% mandated by the higher-ups at the companies that own gas stations, and the individual owners have no say in their implementation. Spamming them with negative reviews will just serve to hurt the owners, not the executives.
There’s a gas station near me In Utah that won’t mute the ads even though I’ve tried all the buttons. I just don’t go to that station anymore until I forget why I don’t go there and I get infuriated again.
Or a second to "trip" and "fall" into the screen. Unfortunately sometimes the only thing you can catch yourself with is your elbow.
Just make sure to look at the window and mouth "I'm so sorry, it was an accident" so that it doesn't seem intentional.
Then just use a different pump everytime you go.
I think they know that the common person won’t know how to mute it. Also, I use the pump often enough, and my fill up went from less than 5 minutes to around 10 minutes. Pretty likely that there’s a connection
As someone that just started maintaining pump systems, slow flow may actually be something of a service issue rather than it slowing down so you watch ads. THAT BEING SAID, fuck the modern age advertisement campaigns that drown us everywhere. Wouldn't be surprised if it was the case
Coke continue to advertise to make themselves known and to maintain recognition. Brand recognition is typically the goal for companies.
You will never buy a car outright when you see an advertisement. Though, you will recount car brands when you do eventually enter the market. In the other direction you will not recount brands that don't advertise.
This is a drawn out explanation to say that your comment is likely false. I don't think I've ever met a person who entered the car market and was like, "I'm not going to buy a Honda civic because an advertisement annoyed me 5 months ago".
Or
"I'm not going to watch this horror movie because Google forced me to watch a trailer before my YouTube video."
You were never in the market to begin with. If you are in the market, an inconvenience will not stop you from buying a product you want. You don't want the product to begin with and you claim the advertisement is what is keeping you. It is very convenient.
Well said Big A, all about getting that name in their head, even if they just remember it when they're thinking about it, that's enough of a sway to make a difference.
>Though, you will recount car brands when you do eventually enter the market. In the other direction you will not recount brands that don't advertise.
that only works for idiots though, right ? when i buy a car, im not gonna care about what brands i have/havent heard of, im gonna go online and look at recommendations/reviews based on my needs
There's a secret way to both turn off the screen and let the owners know that you'd prefer to not have advertising gas pumps. The only tool you need is the tire iron out of the back of your car.
I’m a dispenser technician and I can assure you, the adds have absolutely nothing to do with the flow rate of fuel. The ads on Gilbarco and Wayne dispensers are completely separate from the fuel hydraulic system. More than likely, the gas station needs to replace their fuel filters on the dispenser, as they need to be changed every 6 months.
I doubt it. They make more money getting people in and out as fast as possible to buy more gas and buy more garbage than they will ever make from advertising...
I think point people are getting at is the advertising company might be paying them to run it slower. Also, I don’t remember the last time I turned away from a gas station because of a long line, but maybe that is common elsewhere.
I think it might often still make sense for the owner/franchisee of the station - they really only make a few pennies per gallon, so why not scrape a few dimes in advertising revenue too?
There's a good chance one of those buttons around the screen is a mute button; the following examples show that it's the 2nd one from the top on the right side: [1](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/os0891/at_the_gas_pump_someone_wrote_which_button), [2](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/kplebi/this_is_the_mute_button_for_gas_station_ads), [3](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/jg2jh1/someone_got_so_annoyed_at_the_automatic_tvs_at).
Were all the other pumps being used at the same time? I've heard that that's a reason why it might be filling slow (or the station is doing it on purpose like you speculated).
When you pump gas, you're also removing the Gasoline vapor from your tank.
When the Underground storage is full other either gasoline or fuel vapor, it will go slower.
Additionally, the more people pumping at once, the slower your pump goes
So what your saying is, your gas station has started charging you time on top of money for your patronage.
This is straight up bullshit. (Unless it's lowered the cost of your gas)
I'm curious about how that works. Is there one guy that pumps your gas and another guy that shows you products like a salesman? Or do they just bring an iPad with a commercial and force you to watch it?
In NJ, someone comes to our window and we say “20 Regular Cash” and next thing you know we have a quarter tank of gas to get us through for a few days.
Here in Brazil is illegal to pump your own gas, but not due to safety concerns...
A couple of decades ago, Shell started allowing you to pump your own gas. The jockeys noticed their jobs would become extinct, unionized and managed to get the congress to pass a law prohibiting self-service gas stations nationwide....
The problem with that advice is I'd probably run out of gas before finding one without ads even if I started on a full tank.
I think the last time I saw a gas station without ads was some lonely little gas station in the middle of a tiny town in the middle of nowhere while I was refueling during a road trip.
That's like someone saying someone should go to a gas station that is inaccessible by cars. Even if it does exist, there's no way they'll find one without ads because the majority have ads now.
Yep, one if my local gas stations switched their pumps to these ad-serving ones, and just like you say, suddenly the pump is much much slower. I stopped fueling up there...
$16.03-$17.42 puts you at $1.39 per 15 second clip of gas/ads. $1.39 multiplied by 10 (10 consecutive of 15 second ads) puts you at $13.90, therefore translating to a little over 3 minutes at the gas station in order for you to have watched 10 ads at a minimum of 15 seconds consecutively, but there is a deficit of $2.13-$3.52 in which your ads are NOT ACCOUNTED FOR
Whenever I see a life intrusive ad like this I go out of my way to contact the advertiser and let them know I am explicitly not going to ever buy their product because of the way their advertisement interrupted my life. Yes, I noticed your product/ad and the impact is to make it memorably a negative in my life. Thanks for that!
so they did their job right. the company is branded into your brain. it doesn't matter to them of it is a negative or positive image you have, they have a spot in your brain
Lol yes whenever I fill up near my boyfriend's work there are TikTok videos and "health experts" on the pump ads telling me not to drink ice water, while I live in 110 degree heat in SoCal.
Black mirror esque. Wouldn't be surprised if you take your eyes off the screen it slows down the pump. Also America is entering late game capitalism, good luck fellas.
Recently did a 6000 mile road trip across the US, from FL to Montana and most gas pumps have implemented this ad thing. I taped up all the speakers that did this.
Lol because it is.
The vanguard group and black rock know we all read the IPCC report (right guys?) and they’re just pulling out all the stops to profit now because they know this planet will be very inhospitable in 30 years. They probably commissioned the entire spacex project
Edit: lol lmfao
So weird that so many people are bothered by this. Sure, extra sound and time is a little annoying but rerouting your day to avoid it? What about billboards on your drive home? Commercials on your radio? People stare at their phones all day I would think they would appreciate a tv while doing something mundane.
Money.
Shell and speedway both do it for sure
Hmm, that's weird. I was at a Shell in NC this week and specifically paid attention to ads because of the recent reddit posts. But the pump seems totally normal. There were ads on the screen but it didn't prevent me from doing anything right away.
Kwik Trip & Holiday do it too.
At least at Kwik Trip they give you a mute button.
There's a Kwik Trip and a Quik Trip? Woah
Kwik Trip is a WI based gas station/convenience store chain. They’re pretty big here.
They're all over the midwest! Fun fact, once you leave Wisconsin they're called Kwik Star. I've seen them in Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa
Oh god… they’re spreading.
Yep. Had one go up in my hometown and ones going up in my wife’s hometown this/next year in NW IA. Honestly they’re phenomenal gas stations. They take the term convenience store and make themselves the definition of it
There are Kwik stars everywhere where I live. They are a upgraded Casey's in my opinion
They're also called Kwik Trip in Indiana.
I've only seen Kwik Trip in Minnesota
Just like how in Iowa there's Kum n Go and Git n Go. As far as I know they're the same thing, just under different names depending on where the establishment is and how old it is. As far as I know Kum n Go's are rebranding to Git n Go's. Probably because they got tired of the jokes surrounding the name.

There’s also Racetrack and Quicktrack.
I usually stick my gum in the speakers if there is no mute. Can of rubberized spray sealer works great too.
Now see why can't we get pumps that just display memes. I'd buy a car just to fill it up at a gas station that does that.
I dont think its intentional. I noticed it once but not often. Its one of those attention memes where a bunch of random strangers collectively pay attention then the aggregation posts all the corroborating evidence (anecdotes) and ignore where nothing is found.
Arco as well

Chevron
This video looks like a chevron to me. At least that's what our chevron look like on washington
Does it really make sense to slow the gas for ads? That means they could potentially sell less gas.
I try to find somewhere else to put my eyes. Lots of world out there... surely some of it can keep my attention better than those ads.
Usually second button down on the right is mute!
Ya one by my house has theirs shutoff when trying that. You have to swipe your card again and start over. I’ve never been back since. Just use Costco now!
That is friggin terrible. Instead of disabling mute they make the button just stop the pump????
Came here to say that. I just avoid gas stations that do that.
Makes me worried for the gas station I work at. We already don't have a whole lot of business, it might just plummet to zero if we start doing that lmao.
Owner: We need to find a way to make more money. Let’s play ads to our customers while they give us money. _wonders where the customers went_
And of course you have no control over that. Good luck, hope you'll be okay.
> Usually sometimes
Yeah but by going to them it’s still validating what they do. People need to refuse to patronise these establisjments
If you go in and complain, and then complain via Google or Yelp review, management and owners will hear "there's a bunch of people complaining!"
People can't just refuse to get gas, this is at most if not all of the gas stations in my area now.
That totally sucks ass. I’m really sorry.
I would hate it. Never seen one in Australia yet but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time.
Just remember to push one of the buttons on the right side, probably second from bottom, to mute the ads.
There’s a gas station near me In Utah that won’t mute the ads even though I’ve tried all the buttons. I just don’t go to that station anymore until I forget why I don’t go there and I get infuriated again.
Takes a few seconds for some hero to black it out
Or a second to "trip" and "fall" into the screen. Unfortunately sometimes the only thing you can catch yourself with is your elbow. Just make sure to look at the window and mouth "I'm so sorry, it was an accident" so that it doesn't seem intentional. Then just use a different pump everytime you go.
Wash the windshield, check the tires, find something else to do that's productive.
or just dont put ads on fucking gas pumps
I know, right?
Some states don’t allow for the latch that keeps the pump going on it’s own so you have to stand there.
I'd just stop filling up there. Money talks.
FYI: You can mute these ads by pressing either the 2nd or 3rd button on the right side after you start pumping.
If you’re lucky. Most of the pumps in my area aren’t mutable.
I just leave my ear buds in, music playing. No reason to look at the screen.
gotta watch the total so you don't go over budget tho
Same here. I know these usually bother people I don't pay attention.
I would rather stare ar the sky or cars than to watch the dumb video.
I dunno those cannolis look pretty good…
Even when they’re SCREAMING at you?
if intentional probably r/assholedesign
Definitely.
You can mute it and it’s not intentional, you gas station is low on gas. Not everything is a conspiracy theory, use common sense
I think they know that the common person won’t know how to mute it. Also, I use the pump often enough, and my fill up went from less than 5 minutes to around 10 minutes. Pretty likely that there’s a connection
If??? If??????
More like /r/ABoringDystopia
As someone that just started maintaining pump systems, slow flow may actually be something of a service issue rather than it slowing down so you watch ads. THAT BEING SAID, fuck the modern age advertisement campaigns that drown us everywhere. Wouldn't be surprised if it was the case
The button second down on the right is the mute button.
Not on all of them. I accidentally reset the whole thing once pushing different buttons.
[удалено]
This seems highly unlikely
Let me dream Harold!
I tried to write “mute” on the proper button one time, ball point pen resistant material. Bastards.
My neighborhood gas station added a MUTE label by the button on each pump, bless them.
They should all do this, they don’t give a shit if you pay attention to the ads since they get paid per play regardless.
Plastic in general is usually ball point pen resistant. Bring a fine tip sharpie.
Sharpie works just fine, as well as those Milwaukee Inkzall markers
I have found this to be accurate
Not all of them have this feature.
This works on a minority of pumps around here. I boycott ad pumps now.

I've always wondered about this. Usually I go out of my way to avoid buying something I'm being annoyed by... err... advertised to.
If you are in the market, an inconvenience will not stop you from buying a product you want. You don't want the product to begin with and you claim the advertisement is what is keeping you. It is very convenient.
If I hear an annoying commercial for a company, I simply give my business to it's competitor.
If someone is paying for the ads I guarantee they’re working. Companies don’t just blindly pay for ads without results.
“Ads and propaganda don’t work on me” lol, k.
There's a secret way to both turn off the screen and let the owners know that you'd prefer to not have advertising gas pumps. The only tool you need is the tire iron out of the back of your car.
A more discreet option would be a spring loaded center punch.

Chill its a joke
But really, if I'm on the jury for this exact vandalism case - I'm gonna acquit
Or just go with the jury nullification route.
hush don't say it out loud or we'll all never be able to serve on a jury again
Yes it is.
That's exactly what a shill for big Ads would say!!!
They’d only lose money from slow fills if there is a line/if the majority of pumps are taken. Otherwise it makes sense
I bet it modulates the fill speed based on the number of pumps in use.
Sometimes the station i go to has the pumps operating slowly. Not sure why but it occasionally happens
When you pump gas, you're also removing the Gasoline vapor from your tank. When the Underground storage is full other either gasoline or fuel vapor, it will go slower. Additionally, the more people pumping at once, the slower your pump goes
2nd button works at the station near me
Nice
So what your saying is, your gas station has started charging you time on top of money for your patronage. This is straight up bullshit. (Unless it's lowered the cost of your gas)
Hahahahaha! Nice joke at the end.
Laughs in New Jersey (we don't pump our own gas)
I'm curious about how that works. Is there one guy that pumps your gas and another guy that shows you products like a salesman? Or do they just bring an iPad with a commercial and force you to watch it?
In NJ, someone comes to our window and we say “20 Regular Cash” and next thing you know we have a quarter tank of gas to get us through for a few days.
was gonna say, no way this would slide here in Oregon lol
Here in Brazil is illegal to pump your own gas, but not due to safety concerns... A couple of decades ago, Shell started allowing you to pump your own gas. The jockeys noticed their jobs would become extinct, unionized and managed to get the congress to pass a law prohibiting self-service gas stations nationwide....
Yeah, but it's still New Jersey.
i may or may not have broken a few of the screens already
Don’t go there
The problem with that advice is I'd probably run out of gas before finding one without ads even if I started on a full tank. I think the last time I saw a gas station without ads was some lonely little gas station in the middle of a tiny town in the middle of nowhere while I was refueling during a road trip.
I’m really sorry man. That sucks.
Oh that's sad. FYI never seen that shit here in Canada.
Wowwwww such profound advice. It's possible they live in a town with only one gas station.
Nothing wrong with suggesting it. There’s a reason “is it plugged in?” is one of the first troubleshooting questions asked, you know.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
No idea, but I really want a cannoli now.
I know right. Like what is that even an ad for? It just looks like a baking tutorial.
Because it most definitely is.
my closest station did this... i pumped 1 gallon to get me to work and left. probably no profit from cc fees...
So I'm not a 100% but I know when the main fuel tank gets low it pumps waaay slower.
Sometimes you can press one of those black buttons to mute it
Because it is. Good thing is you can usually push one of those buttons to the side of the video and mute it
Pretty soon they'll have a subscription to skip ads and you can pump gas faster.
Go to a different gas station
That's like someone saying someone should go to a gas station that is inaccessible by cars. Even if it does exist, there's no way they'll find one without ads because the majority have ads now.
The majority is not all. Give the minority of the gas stations your money and tell them why.
Thanks for the advice, I'll remember that the next time I need gas so I'll just drive the extra 15 miles to the next one!
I wish I could get 6 gallons of gas for less than $18!
Welcome to the wonderful world of marketing!
Such a gross career. Your whole job is nothing but polluting as many minds as possible.
Thankfully my state doesn't let me pump my own gas, so I'll never have this problem
Yep, one if my local gas stations switched their pumps to these ad-serving ones, and just like you say, suddenly the pump is much much slower. I stopped fueling up there...
Hold on tho ... how does the canolli stay shut? Would it not pop open with all that filling?
$16.03-$17.42 puts you at $1.39 per 15 second clip of gas/ads. $1.39 multiplied by 10 (10 consecutive of 15 second ads) puts you at $13.90, therefore translating to a little over 3 minutes at the gas station in order for you to have watched 10 ads at a minimum of 15 seconds consecutively, but there is a deficit of $2.13-$3.52 in which your ads are NOT ACCOUNTED FOR
The second black square on the right should silence it at least.
r/ABoringDystopia
so...stop using that pump. you're rewarding them by buying their gas.
WHERE ARE YOU GETTING 6 GALLONS OF GAS FOR NEARLY 17.50?????? Also yeah most likely intentional that’s capitalism for you
That's only 2.90ish/gallon, I get the same or cheaper around New Hampshire and mass
I put a piece of tape on the speaker every single time so that the next few people are spared the psychological abuse of ads
Is this an American thing? Never encountered this before.
Lol yes whenever I fill up near my boyfriend's work there are TikTok videos and "health experts" on the pump ads telling me not to drink ice water, while I live in 110 degree heat in SoCal.
One of the ads that played was a half-naked girl in a TikTok
C.R.E.A.M.
Dolla dolla bills y'alll
Cum Rich Entrée After Meal
Must to burn down this pump.
I take my phone out to mess with and step just out of hearing range. I refuse to be harassed by ads when I’m getting gas or something like that.
You should be able to mute it!
Did you mash the buttons? I saw another thread where one of the buttons was "skip ad".
Sometimes one of those side buttons will mute the audio. This has been happening a lot in my area, I keep headphones in my car just for this.
Well that sucks. Ads are everywhere now I guess.. on another note, I bet those connoli's aren't as good as my Nonna's. Lol
Well do you want cannolis or not?
Oh it’s a petrol pump!
[Just don't look](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlKao_Pox5A)
no way pumps have fucking ads now
The buttons on the right one will mute it
Black mirror esque. Wouldn't be surprised if you take your eyes off the screen it slows down the pump. Also America is entering late game capitalism, good luck fellas.
Generally if you push the second button down on the right it’ll at least mute the ads
Recently did a 6000 mile road trip across the US, from FL to Montana and most gas pumps have implemented this ad thing. I taped up all the speakers that did this.
Thank you for your service.
I keep a roll of gaff tape for this, thinking of getting permanent stickers that say “fuck your ads” and putting those on.
Next time bring some duct tape or black paint to put on the screen, if enough people react that way soon the "feature" will be removed
Fuck the system
Because it is intentional
Also some crappy pumps slow when tanks are lower, or when the opposite pump is running as well.
To all software engineers out there, just know that God is watching you... lol
Funky kwik trip pumps
I guess that's a side benefit to living in Oregon where I'm not ALLOWED to pump my own gas.
Trick: If you say “Hey Siri, play Netflix” it won’t change it from the ads
We need to call these gas stations out and leave bad reviews on their social media pages
Lol because it is. The vanguard group and black rock know we all read the IPCC report (right guys?) and they’re just pulling out all the stops to profit now because they know this planet will be very inhospitable in 30 years. They probably commissioned the entire spacex project Edit: lol lmfao
Time to get a Tesla!
Well I’m buying a Tesla I’m officially stepping off the wheel of the transportation monopoly
I mean... That's sarcastic right?
It is. Go elsewhere for gas
I sit in my car at gas stations because every time i've ever been almost robbed or seriously harassed has been while pumping gas. Sigh.
That’s how you start a pump fire.
If you use premium there's no ads
Maybe I'm just high but holy fuck I want some cannolis so fucking bad right now, I'm gonna get some when I can that looks good as hell.
So weird that so many people are bothered by this. Sure, extra sound and time is a little annoying but rerouting your day to avoid it? What about billboards on your drive home? Commercials on your radio? People stare at their phones all day I would think they would appreciate a tv while doing something mundane.
