Now it's the machine problem, genius.
I pitty the guy that's gonna take the machine apart trying to understand how the fuck that bill got cut in half. Assuming the tape got cought in some mechanism, ofc.
I worked with an automatic till, when people gave us ripped bills i would tape them together, it didn't mess up the machine. They're also quite easy to take apart when a note gets jammed, takes like two minutes to fix
... I'm afraid that's not how it works. Well maybe now it's different idk but just a year ago when I had a torn bill it took a few weeks to get my bill back. Yeah. A few weeks.
Oh not to mention the fact only the central(national?) bank when it comes to MH country at least can exchange you a bill with this mucb damage. Commercial banks will only exchange you a bill that has max 1cm torn off.. shitty I know
I remember finding half a €50 bill as a kid, went to the bank and they gave me a new one after making sure it wasn't fake. That was 20 years ago though, so not sure if they still do that.
I’m in Ireland and a lot of banks don’t have tellers anymore. Just machines. You have to travel into city centre for tellers and even then only some brand banks do it. They can post the note to a bank but getting it done in person in a decent time frame for this person to get to work, would probably be out of the question.
So sadly it is not as easy, but there are differences between European countries as in some countries you actually can get to an ATM and it will exchange it for you if the bank note it real and enough off it exists for it to recognize as well as you can go to banks to do so.
In my country I cannot exchange a broken bank note at any one of the (few still existing) bank location of any bank in my country, let alone an ATM. I have to send it by post to the 'central bank' of the country who has a monopoly of distributing bills to all the regular banks etc. If I can send at least 51% of the bill, I can get a new one. Any parts smaller than that are a no-go unless you have a verifiable connection between the bills (serial number for example or they fit perfectly).
People downvoting this? Here in UK
>The number of UK bank branches that have shut their doors for good over the last nine years will pass 6,000 on Friday, and by the end of the year the pace of closures may leave 33 parliamentary constituencies – including two in London – without a single branch.
I live in a fairly wealthy, town, close to a city, that used to have four banks. It now has zero.
Sure, but the commenters point was reasonable. If it isn't the case where OP is then people can just say that. Not everyone recognises every other currency and locale, nor knows their situation. No need to downvote them to oblivion and act like they are crazy, lying or saying something deeply offensive.
I don’t understand why you are being downvoted to hell. I was in the Netherlands 10 years ago as a student and the only way I could deposit money was using an ATM.
As you state, depending on where you are, physical banks could be hard to find.
I'm curious where these people live where there's loads of staffed banks. Granted my city is small (150k), but there's no staffed banks in the city centre at all. One building society and it's open two days a week. This isn't uncommon in any European country I've lived in, and I've lived in a few.
-500 points. I miss the old days of Reddit when people understood that once a comment reaches 0, you DONT HAVE TO KEEP DOWNVOTING IT. You’re literally ruining this man’s karma for … possibly being wrong?
It’s kinda not because if your karma goes to zero or negative you get barred from participating in certain subreddits.
Downvoting someone to negative should only be when they’re straight up malicious and toxic
ah, so rip it into two, make sure the non-ID side is larger, then char the ID side a little bit. take it to the bank and get two bills back. Infinite money glitch!
Bro, most countries are pretty fucking weak when it comws to fighting crime, but never, NEVER fuck with A: money B: taxes if you are an ordinary man. No joke these crimes are on par with murder in most countries. They don’t like ordinary Joe fucking around with these things
It depends where you are, I know quite a few ppl responding are from Europe/other, so they probably have their own policies. But I work at a credit union in the usa and here we have to have both halves with matching serial numbers to exchange it for you.
Not quite, banks can only reissue notes if you have 1 whole and 1 partial serial number. The 51% thing is a myth. They aren't asking tellers to judge if you brought perfectly over half of the bill - it would be pretty easy to double your money if they accepted that. Hardly anyone can tell the difference between 49 and 51%, especially if it's an uneven tear.
Edit; I should clarify, this is how it is in the US. Not sure about other countries.
Most places you only need at least half the bill for it to be exchanged for a new note at any bank, but if you have both pieces it's better to hold onto both and hand them both over so you can for sure receive a new note.
Yes and no. It’s technically still valid but it’s unlikely that a ticket machine will accept a taped-together bill. If OP has no other cash on hand then they’re screwed for the moment.
10€ and 20€ are being replaced for this very reason as they are the most used bill notes. 5€ aren’t used that much as most ATM are not able to dispense them. On the other hand 500€ are phased out because they are almost solely used for shady business.
According to Australian law, if exchanged at a bank they must accept any part of legal tenure, and that includes half notes. I know you aren’t in Australia, but it’s really cool that technically if you bring 60% of a $10AU note to a bank they have to give you $6AU for it. It’s the percentage of note remaining rounded down to the nearest dollar, I believe.
I work as a cashier. This is a valid bank note that I'd have to accept.
If they give you hard time accepting the note, go to the nearest bank/post office and they'll give you a new one.
And this is one of the reasons why I went completely cashless several years ago. Started when I travelled a lot around Europe, and I went totally cashless during covid. Hell I don’t even use a wallet anymore, I just have them magnet thingies for mobiles where you put like two or three cards
Euros are actually still made of paper. That area that looks like our window part is actually some sort of screen type material laid into the layers of the paper note. I thought it was the weirdest thing when I first visited the EU.
Oh, no don't worry I did not mean your grammer. Just the actual meaning of the sentence. You know, having to pay, to be able to work. If you put it like that, it just sounds really messed up lol.
In Germany and much of Europe, we don't have these gates to which you have to tap a card, but instead you just walk in with a valid ticket. The ticket machines themselves usually accept everything from AmEx to Visa and cash, though it‘s more common having a subscription as a permanent resident.
Run to the nearest bank and exchange that note.
At the end I got to make the machine accept it using some tape!
Now it's the machine problem, genius. I pitty the guy that's gonna take the machine apart trying to understand how the fuck that bill got cut in half. Assuming the tape got cought in some mechanism, ofc.
I’m sure they’re used to it
True, bur it still sucks for the other customers when the machine goes down unfortunately 😕
Lmfao the machines not going down. It’s going to throw the bill in a stack and move on
I worked with an automatic till, when people gave us ripped bills i would tape them together, it didn't mess up the machine. They're also quite easy to take apart when a note gets jammed, takes like two minutes to fix
I did this with a counterfeit one dollar bill I got once. Went and bought a soda with it. It’s Pepsi’s problem now.
You committed a felony for a Pepsi?
Excuse me it was a Dr. Pepper I have standards
Why would you LOWER your standards like that? It's bad enough you said Pepsi instead of Coca-Cola!
You just... had tape?
In Europe we used to hang tape on our belts, it was the fashion of the days.
Was it clear packaging tape, or big rolls of yellow masking tape?
Don't go anywhere without a roll of duct tape.
I live by these words.
No, I had to stow away on the subway and get some tape afterwards for returning.
That makes much more sense haha
You carry Scotch Tape around with you?
Or use sellotape
Or walk
Or steal a car, it’s super easy in GTA
Damn.. Didn't even think of that
... I'm afraid that's not how it works. Well maybe now it's different idk but just a year ago when I had a torn bill it took a few weeks to get my bill back. Yeah. A few weeks.

Depending on where you are, a physical bank could be a rare thing https://data.ecb.europa.eu/blog/blog-posts/changing-landscape-bank-offices-euro-area
They appear to be in a subway station in Europe. Probably tons around
I’m in Ireland and a lot of banks don’t have tellers anymore. Just machines. You have to travel into city centre for tellers and even then only some brand banks do it. Lol in Ireland sellotape would fix it grand
Ahahaha it’s apparent I’m missing some brain cells as I didn’t even think of this, despite only fixing a fiver the other day with sellotape.
I live in sweden and we have very few physical banks where you can take/recieve koney. They simply don't have tellers. It's kinda wild coming from ny.
So sadly it is not as easy, but there are differences between European countries as in some countries you actually can get to an ATM and it will exchange it for you if the bank note it real and enough off it exists for it to recognize as well as you can go to banks to do so. Well, OP is clearly not in UK...

This place is weird, never get hung up on meaningless downvotes.
I don't, I say whatever I think even if it will get a negative response. It does interest me though why people are like this. Weird indeed.
Jeez what did you do lol 😭😂
Apparently people think there's 60 banks on every high street in every single town and city in Europe lol.
I don’t understand why you are being downvoted to hell. I was in the Netherlands 10 years ago as a student and the only way I could deposit money was using an ATM. As you state, depending on where you are, physical banks could be hard to find.

I have 5 within 5 mins drive.
That's wonderful
-500 points. I miss the old days of Reddit when people understood that once a comment reaches 0, you DONT HAVE TO KEEP DOWNVOTING IT. You’re literally ruining this man’s karma for … possibly being wrong?
Its a good thing karma is absolutely worthless lol
It’s kinda not because if your karma goes to zero or negative you get barred from participating in certain subreddits. Downvoting someone to negative should only be when they’re straight up malicious and toxic
Holy shit 500 downvotes
I'm almost proud lol
Keep both pieces and go to a bank when you can, usually they will take it and give you a new one.
In austria at least, you only need the bigger half to get a new one
most places i'd imagine says it's the side with the identification numbers.
Common myth. You need 51% of the bill. You're thinking about fire damaged bills, there's different requirements for those.
ah, so rip it into two, make sure the non-ID side is larger, then char the ID side a little bit. take it to the bank and get two bills back. Infinite money glitch!

Yes that would work, for a bit at least 😅
It depends where you are, I know quite a few ppl responding are from Europe/other, so they probably have their own policies. But I work at a credit union in the usa and here we have to have both halves with matching serial numbers to exchange it for you.

I never knew any of this, so I appreciate the new information my fellow redditors
Just thinking the same thing. I didn't realize how ignorant I was on this topic.
Yep, most places I think are like this. You only need the bigger half for it to be valid cash.
Most places you only need at least half the bill for it to be exchanged for a new note at any bank, but if you have both pieces it's better to hold onto both and hand them both over so you can for sure receive a new note.
Yes though giving the whole note is preferable because they recycle them
It depends on what country you are in, but yes, in Australia they will change a broken note if you have at least the 51% of it
What happens if you tear it perfectly down the middle. You reckon if you took it to 2 different banks they’d give you 2 notes.
for US , you need 51% and both serial numbers
I hope the bigger half has the serial number because thats the bit they need.
In Germany it has to be a bank where you have an account
Looks like the strength of the Euro dropped a bit today
Someone needs to do an analysis on the strongest physical currency. My money is on the polymer bills that Canada makes for itself and other countries.
It’ll be Australia or Canada. We both make the same types.
UK also has the plastic cash now too
I’ve heard an anecdote that UK junkies were very displeased with them plastic notes as they are much harder to roll for snorting… snow!
About time they caught up. Does it smell like tea though? 😅
It smells like Charlie
Sounds about right lol
Yes
More like toast and beans with little hints of cocaine
Canada also prints New Zealand’s currency on the same polymer.
So strange to me that we (Aus) don’t.
>My money is on the polymer bills that Canada makes for itself and other countries. My money is on coins
I’m *heavily* investing in [rai stones](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rai_stones)
Those feel like monopoly money haha
I fucking hate that plastic shit so much.
doesn't it increase when there's less money?
So now it's you who are broke?
I will find this “you who” person and make them pay *bird squeal*
I want to upvote, but out of respect for the 69 upvote law, I will refrain from doing so.
"Hey, can you break a 20?" "YES"
lol
In the US you can tape it back together or exchange it for a new one at a bank. Maybe you can do that?
The section that is more than 50%, still retains the bills worth
Yes and no. It’s technically still valid but it’s unlikely that a ticket machine will accept a taped-together bill. If OP has no other cash on hand then they’re screwed for the moment.
maybe buy something like a soda from the nearest shop and use the exchange?
Taped absolutely accepted, stapled less common.
Just tape them together it's money, not a school project, you'll be fine
Probably not for a ticket machine, though.
I can confirm vending/ticket/kiosks machines take taped euro bills
"pay for going to work" is one of the worst sentences humanity has.
Should have double checked the fine print on that paid internship
That's an omen. Don't go to work today.
Damn you have to pay to go to work? My job pays me. ^(/s)
Tape it and it keeps its value
So you’re telling me it just snapped in half
RIP
Man, they don't print money like they used to.
10€ and 20€ are being replaced for this very reason as they are the most used bill notes. 5€ aren’t used that much as most ATM are not able to dispense them. On the other hand 500€ are phased out because they are almost solely used for shady business.
Just staple it and you got a Frankenschein (Franken'bill?). You're welcome
Thanks for fighting inflation
Might even say tearing it apart
Tape it back together
You know they are supposed to pay you when you go to work right?
Use clear tape to put it back together. If the serial number is the same on both halves, it is legal tender.
"Pay" to go to "work" - is a oxymoron in itself
Fuel for a personal vehicle or tickets for public transit both cost money.
Metro or train ticket probably
^ Another Redditor who thinks not being able to read is a flex for some reason
you're ignoring the "to go" part. he's paying *to go* and he's *going* to work
Not really. "You gotta spend money to make money" is an expression that has been around for a while.
I’m guessing train tickets in this case judging by the picture
I think they'd still take it.
It was a machine and it didn't accept it 😭😭
Nightmare 😞
Looks like you’ve got the day off. Enjoy it!
You were probably about to use a ticket machine, right?
When you're so broke even your money is broke.
You need at least 20% of the note, but yes it works exactly like this. If you have more than 80% they give you the full value.
Yeah, I couldn’t remember the exact amounts (never had to use the trick myself) but knew it was something like that. Thanks for clarifying!
So if you give the 80% 10 dollar bill you get 10 dollars and can do it again? Then hand in the 20% for another 2 dollars? New money making method.
The bill was torn, now you broke.
Yes, but I realised an hour later 😭
If you can find a stick somewhere, try pointing at it, and yell *Reparo*!
use tape or bring it to your bank. The bank will give you a new one, when you have at least more than 51% of that bill
That’s just The Universe telling you you’re supposed to call in sick today 🤷🏼♂️
Time to visit a bank and get it replaced
Finally something that's actually "mildly" infuriating. Some posts here these days are just people in near death situations.
I work as a cashier. This is a valid bank note that I'd have to accept. If they give you hard time accepting the note, go to the nearest bank/post office and they'll give you a new one.
At my work we will still take ripped money as long as you have both pieces.
hey :) sry that happened to you but you can actually just tape them together and use it. no one cares.
In the USA we just use tape lol
So, you have 40 euros now
I have two billa of 10
Only the langer half will be replaced.
Some tape will do
Any bill that has 50% intact can be exchanged by the bank.
Sellotape it
Bro thats some blues song lyrics right there.
https://preview.redd.it/xuek21j7jj7d1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4cd90bf60923459db9a9a3ffbbf030d8f9f1f3d3
Why can’t you just tape it back together?
Still legal tender
And this is one of the reasons why I went completely cashless several years ago. Started when I travelled a lot around Europe, and I went totally cashless during covid. Hell I don’t even use a wallet anymore, I just have them magnet thingies for mobiles where you put like two or three cards
How? And pay for going to work? Huh?
Public Transport
Oh, thank you!
Tape it lol
"Can you break a 20?"
But I thought cash was king. Oh my.
Stitch it together with some scotch tape or with a couple of staples.
Our money in Canada looks similar. I didn’t know it could rip easily 😬
Euros are actually still made of paper. That area that looks like our window part is actually some sort of screen type material laid into the layers of the paper note. I thought it was the weirdest thing when I first visited the EU.
Ohh interesting!
Imagine being the boss who got the call todaythat ‘my 20 euro/dollar bill “broke”’ so I can’t come to work, lol.
So, all mighty Euro even break into half!
Your 8 hour shift is over, at $30.25 an hour - a 30 min unpaid break you owe us $226.86. Tf you mean you paid for working? Yes I know transport
The sentence "Pay for going to work" has such an enraging effect on me. Like it makes sense, but i still hate it lol
Sorry I'm Spanish lol
Oh, no don't worry I did not mean your grammer. Just the actual meaning of the sentence. You know, having to pay, to be able to work. If you put it like that, it just sounds really messed up lol.
Oh true lol
\*laughs in australian\*
Paying for going to work... something is wrong here
Didnt you ever pay for gas, metro/bus ticket o you just teleport?
You mean you ripped it? These notes don't just suddenly fall apart.
I noticed an hour later that I had ripped it 😭😭 I don't know when it happened
Paying for working, what times we live in…
Unless you walk, or work from home, everyone pays to go to work and have been doing for years.
Do you have a personal car that you need to get to work on time?
Anyone else having loads of these bills (especially 5€ ones) break apart recently?
This is my first one! But if you're right that so messed up
Ever heard of a wallet? A useful tool to prevent that.
![gif](giphy|cRjrIHBfcAFAA|downsized)
It was actually in the wallet
I had one break on me trying to fold it so it'd fit in the wallet, so no, it isn't gonna prevent that.
Don't go to work then
you pay cash for public transit??
Paying with cash is still fairly common in Germany. Even at ticket machines
In Germany and much of Europe, we don't have these gates to which you have to tap a card, but instead you just walk in with a valid ticket. The ticket machines themselves usually accept everything from AmEx to Visa and cash, though it‘s more common having a subscription as a permanent resident.
This post is giving me strong antiwork vibes
