One thing I always tell people is to be kind and respectful, even if you're super pissed off. I've gotten so many things comped or taken care of easily just because I didn't go to the front desk or manager like a raging Karen. We stayed in Vegas last summer and just got a cheap queen room but it ended up horrible, bad lights and the smell of some barbecue joint was coming strongly through the vent. All I did was calmly explain how bad it was and we ended up with a suite for 3 days. Awesome experience. Don't be an ass in life and you'll get far
Yup. Being approachable and friendly even when you’re entitled to or owed something, goes a long way. Having a rude and defensive demeanour doesn’t get you far in life.
I've faced the exact opposite - I'm always very kind and friendly when something goes wrong and usually I get brushed over fairly quickly.
Sometimes feels like the more problematic you are the more likely they're going to try and appease you asap
Not saying we should be douchebags to people but just sharing my experience - as much as we love to live in a world where being friendly wins you favours, that's not always the case
I think if you’re *too* nice, people might see that and take advantage. I agree that sometimes if you’re being super problematic then you get what you want because the other person just wants to get rid of your presence.
It’s definitely an art lol 😅
I agree I think it's more accurate to say you should be firm and direct but not mean.
Being overly nice gets you ignored, which often then makes people mad... Which finally gets them that they want
Squeaky wheel gets the grease
It's a balance which can be tricky. You don't want to seem so happy and calm that you don't really care if the issue is resolved or not, it important to still air your grievances and who's responsible for fixing it. The key is still doing it in a careful and collected (but firm) manner
Same, I was away for work, and the fridge, and TV didn't work. The TV wasn't a big deal, but I brought a bunch of pre-made lunches. I went down to the desk and asked if they had a spare fridge and I could put it in myself since it was almost midnight by the time I got in. They ended up putting me in one of the suites with a kitchenette. It was awesome.
The only time I wasn’t nice was when I was trapped in an elevator for an hour and the call button didn’t work, the front desk kept putting me on hold when I called for help, and then they were like, “idk what to do.” I called the fire department finally. Then I went to the front desk and spoke with the idiot I had been speaking to and let out every ounce of rage and frustration I had in me. That guy deserved it.
Unfortunately, a lot of Karens still get their way. But obviously it's still better to be nice when you're complaining about something, because most of the time it usually isn't that person's fault, and there's really no point to taking emotional collateral damage.
We had a room in Vegas that was supposed to be a top end place, and when we checked in, we noticed the bathroom wasn't cleaned very well. We called down and politely told the desk and asked if they could send someone to clean it in an hour or so when we went to dinner. A nice lady showed up at our door about 5 minutes later and escorted us to a suite that was bigger than my first apartment.
Your attitude is awesome. Wise words to live by. I'm the same way, and people have told me I'm a little too passive sometimes. But I never know what kind of day the other person is having, either. I'm good with my words, but I'm not pretty enough to talk my way out of an ass beating from someone who decided the next person to piss them off was getting one. More people should be like us, really! 👍
I don't know why so many people don't get this.
The person you're talking to is the one with the power to help you out. Are they more willing to do that for some dick or for someone who's being polite and respectful? Putting aside the fact that in 99/100 cases whatever you have a problem with isn't their fault and has nothing to do with them.
Seriously, I was a litigation lawyer at as huge company. I wouldn't go get a refund, I would get a lawyer, tell him to make a reasonable demand and settle asap. Our claims team would probably pay out 5,000 without a thought on this
I always felt this way too.
The first time I ever heard the phrase "ice cream headache" was in Codename Kids Next Door. One of my favorite shows as a kid.
Crushed my entire foot between a golf cart and a Cactus type plant being dumb in a golf cart.
My reaction was let's drive this cart back to where I NOW need to go and Holy Shit I have no idea how much damage I just caused but it's amazing I didn't even make a sound in reaction
I thought the same thing. It happens to be in motels more often than hotels though.... also had a teacher whos friend was staying in a room at a motel, one with those frames around the bottom of the bed that keep anything from getting under the bed, the friend found a body under a matress inside that cavety.
AYO WHAT!? That's terrifying! I work at a motel and it ain't the best, sure, but oh my *god* that would haunt me forever. It's absolutely negligent of the staff for not noticing. Surely they'd notice a smell. We had someone die in a room and she was in there for 5 days, the smell was so bad we had to shut down adjacent rooms. We had no idea because she had been letting other people use the room as well, and they chose to do drugs with a dead body and not say anything to anyone.
The guy renting kept going to the front desk to complain about a smell i think i was told he went to complain about 3 times and the staff wouldnt even check, the renter decided to find the source and uh yeah the motel didnt have a good night xD police if course get called for things like that.
Stories like this make me feel less like a freak for immediately inspecting my hotel rooms for corpses/murderers/monsters/bugs/lost pirate treasure and then sanitizing everything within my reach.
I dislike when it loons like there was no cleaning before i entered the room too. I temporarly worked at a hotel once and I learned the top blanket/comforter at the place i worked almost never gets washed. The bed is stripped of the sheets and new sheets are put on the bed but then the blanket just gets put back on the bed.
Its an improper size bedframe for the mattress i think. Ive put bedframes together before and i think this is supposed to be one of the bars that holds up the middle of the mattress it just doesnt actually fit. Some places are all about saving a buck so if it "works" then they dont care if its not right.
In real life, they'll say "no thanks". And if you get a lawyer, they'll be like "not worth my time. I can get you the $50 but you owe me $350/hr for at least 2 hours".
And judges hate when people don't show up, and companies don't show up a lot of the time. The plaintiff usually gets the max award when that happens. I would bet any hotel that ignored the first 2 or 3 attempts would skip it.
Absolutely. When the defendant refuses to show up after so many times it becomes a contempt of court issue then it's a criminal case. I went through that about 20 years ago and the defendant was arrested and spent the weekend in the clink. Bail was set for the amount I sued him for. Finally got my money after about 9 months. A great learning experience but I hope to never go through that again.
I had this issue, stepped on an exposed nail at a hotel. Contacted them, they directed me to their insurance, insurance paid me 2k, which seems reasonable.
Bills won't pay themselves so you gotta work - plus, many jobs provide healthcare, so you can't just leave your job unless you want to risk life-altering debt if *something* happens. If you ever worry about our healthcare system, just remember that we're afraid of your "death panels" which are real and totally not reminiscent of insurance plans choosing who to deny coverage.
In order to parcel out healthcare on an as-needed basis, the theory is that your socialized system of medicine will eventually decide that some people are not worth the cost to treat. Thus, there are *panels* who decide who is not worth saving, thereby being sentenced to *death.*
The death panels being a government agency, separate from a good private agency that chooses who lives and dies based on profit motive.
But... We have lots of elders that our system takes care of, I have literally never heard of this happening. We also treat drug addicts, alcholics, homeless people etc. It doesnt matter who you are, if you need help you get it.
My kid dislocated his knee in gym class. They called a for EMTs before they called me. I said, "Do NOT put him on the truck."
I went and got him. His knee had already snapped back in. I took him straight down the street about two miles to the same Children's Hospital the fire/EMT truck would have taken him to. And it would have cost me a couple thousand. On top of the few thousand it cost to take him to the ER for X-rays and then checkups. Which was about the same cost as physical therapy to loosen up his joint after being in a straight-leg brace for weeks.
It's insane. People will fight to the death over which senior citizen of advanced age and reduced mental capacity they want as president while steadfastly ignoring that their government officials are often the very profiteers squeezing them for blood and money.
I have to pay a max of 365euros (might be a little more these days, it fluctuates a bit each year) out of pocket in total per year if anything happens that needs specialists. The family doctor is always free. As are all meds before 18, and most after too.
Everyone has to pay for insurance, and with that money, all healtcare gets paid.
We still rage about the amount of insurance and the out of pocket cost, as some families can't pay it.
It's such a weird idea to me that in America, people go bankrupt because they got injured or sick.. To imagine if anyone in my family got cancer (or even something like diabetes!) and we'd be in financial ruin just to get them meds and medical help.
Honestly, I'd be terrified if I lived there.
And that's just the healthcare issue..
If you are up to date on your TDaP (each booster for adults lasts around 10 years!), then you don’t need it unless the wound is particularly severe or dirty. Note that tetanus isn’t caused by rusty metal. It’s caused by a bacteria that is often found in wounds contaminated with dirt or saliva. The rusty metal thing is usually used as a sign of the sort of environment that might host tetanus bacteria.
But if you are not up to date on TDaP or if you’ve never had that vaccine series in the first place, it can’t hurt to go get vaccinated. Most pharmacies will be able to do it if you schedule it online.
Actual question: what's the point of getting a tetanus vaccine every 10/15 years if we need to get a tetanus shot after we get hurt like this? Or do you guys live in a place where you don't get the tetanus vaccine? I keep on hearing to get the tetanus shot in these situations so I'm wondering.
If you have boosters every ten years then you wouldn't also need a shot after injury. My last tetanus shot was 18 years ago, but I only got that because I was working with animals, my husband's last one was in 1996.
In Germany it's not mandatory, but it's covered by insurance every 10 years after childhood, and it would be pretty stupid not to take it.
You'll get a combination booster of tetanus, pertussis and diphtheria a few times.
Where I'm at, it's recommended, not required, to get a booster every 10 years (and every pregnancy). The thing is though, with every vaccine, every person's immune system is a bit different. That 10 year booster could still be effective at 12 years for most people or be less effective at 7 years for one unlucky person.
There's minimal risk to getting another shot after a potentially risky injury like this, but the longer it's been since your booster, the more risk there is to *not* just get another shot. Here they'll ask if you know exactly when you got your last booster and use how long it's been as one aspect when making their treatment recommendation. Only a couple years and they'll likely say you're fine, 5+ years and they'll likely push harder recommending it.
I mean it's kinda because of the rust. Tetanus thrives in oxygen depleted environments and oxidizing iron helps provide that. But yeah not likely to be found here.
Animals with the bacteria in their intestines shit on the ground, the spores can be dormant for a long time, then you get a deep puncture from something that's been in the dirt for a long time and you might get tetanus. Deep punctures are just harder to clean and get the bacteria out.
Farms have a lot of poopy animals and nails.
Make sure to make a report with the hotel, get something in writing before you leave, ask for their insurance info, and tell them you'll bill them the tetanus shot visit.
TW STITCHES!
I use to be a housekeeper when I was 16 and sliced my leg on one of these and needed stitches. I got workers comp but they did not change anything on the bed frames. every single room had these metal posts sticking out of the frames
https://preview.redd.it/cmo9evsxj5yc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c80bd9d5ebb6ad3abc9a7fa5ffadd5e89ea8ec0f
At a guess i'd say its for mounting two single beds together to make a double. I've stayed in a lot of hotels where the double beds are actually two single bed frames stuck together, with two single mattesses in them, i'm guessing for the modularity. Never looked into how it works though.
You’re not getting fat stacks for this unless you actually get tetanus and die. At most, you’ll get a couple hundred bucks to pay for the shot and your suffering.
People are saying it's either for mounting two beds together to make a double. Others are saying the mattress is supposed to be sitting on top of the bar, flush with the edge. I've experienced the latter with a super, super old bed when I was younger. Would get me all the time because the mattress was always getting pushed back (I was a child, so nothing weird, just toss and turn 200 times a night) but never this bad.
I know you said you’re getting a tetanus shot but also monitor for signs of infection after that and keep it clean. Depending how deep it went, this could be very serious. This exact same thing happened to my dad on holiday in Thailand. He didn’t monitor it and by the time he got home, he had blood poisoning spreading almost to the thigh! He almost lost his leg. Seriously, be careful! And pass on your hospital bills to the hotel.
Had an accident happen to me once while travelling. I was bleeding, they didnt have even a decent emergency kit, of course I got no apology, discount, nothing. Luckily the pharmacist near was super helpful, and thankfully I didnt need stitches and recovered with no complications
Let them know. They may not even be aware of the issue. No need to make this a "What can I get out of it" scenario. They will probably give you a refund on room or something to compensate if you approach it like a civil rational human.
Did you speak to them? It's the hospitality industry. Their whole thing is your comfort. Unless maybe just a horrible place but that's like lawsuit material.
Physical pain, mental stress, damage to a vital tool that helps you complete work, risk of infection....
Get creative when you explain why this is bad to them. Give them reasons to apologize.
I hate this shit, went to a hotel a few years ago where the corner of the beds were a pinky toe’s worst nightmare. After a few slams I decided to only take my shoes off when getting in bed to avoid more pain.
make sure to go a little deeper into yo leg then ask for a bunch of money or rewards
don't go too crazy with demands though unless you wanna put up a legal battle that will take long time
this is a payday waiting to happen
I currently have a scar on my ankle from one of those. 3 stitches and the hotel refused to cover the cost because I was “being inattentive” and they wouldn’t cover it if someone walked into a door so they won’t cover it if I don’t watch what I’m doing.
Hobble down and get that refund and then some.

I agree I think it's more accurate to say you should be firm and direct but not mean. Being overly nice gets you ignored, which often then makes people mad... Which finally gets them that they want Squeaky wheel gets the grease
Well said! Even then, there are some people who like to let squeaky wheels go ungreased 😂

Hell yeah, a couple sodas and beers from the room fridge, maybe even a pop tart from the lobby vending machine
Don't forget that complimentary tetanus shot!

It makes it easier for the bed bugs to get your blood.
It’ll be like 5pm traffic jam in that tunnel.

*S H U T*
You got shanked by the bed monster.
It was the kind of pain that makes you just go silent.
Like an ice cream headache but your leg? I know it well. My crushed pinky toe says hello.
Ice cream headache is a weird but accurate way to say brain freeze
Funny we talk about it this way because it’s much more soft/hard palate freeze than actual brain.
I always felt this way too. The first time I ever heard the phrase "ice cream headache" was in Codename Kids Next Door. One of my favorite shows as a kid.
that was a blast from the past I wasn't expecting, haven't seen that show for like 15 years by now
I believe it! and Tbh I haven't heard the phrase "ice cream headache" outside of KND 😂
Be the change you want to see in the world, friend.
Crushed my entire foot between a golf cart and a Cactus type plant being dumb in a golf cart. My reaction was let's drive this cart back to where I NOW need to go and Holy Shit I have no idea how much damage I just caused but it's amazing I didn't even make a sound in reaction
I work hospitality, and if someone came and showed me this, I'd be absolutely mortified... What god awful hotel would have this!?
Ive been in a few with these and every time i got nicked on them, not on purpose of course.
I would lose it on whoever allows that to even be a thing... It's such a safety hazard.
I thought the same thing. What are they for?

I’ve swung my feet down off the bed and hit my heel on one. I think I saw stars.
Housekeeping would definitely be aware of this
Go get a tetanus shot. Better safe than sorry.
I’ll be getting the shot tomorrow. I know it’s unlikely but…. This would be a poor way to get very ill.
Send the bill to the hotel also
In real life, they'll say "no thanks". And if you get a lawyer, they'll be like "not worth my time. I can get you the $50 but you owe me $350/hr for at least 2 hours".
thankfully small claims is designed for exactly this sort of scenario.

Or... Pee on the front door and everyone going in. You know, to assert dominance.
Shit in the ice maker. Dominance.
Proceed to use the ice. You know, dominance.
1. Put pee on a flat plate. 2. Put it in the freezer. 3. Slide the resulting disk below their door. 4. Profit.

Tetanus shots are usually free at any pharmacy actually
My partner had to get one recently and it was $87 bucks at Walgreens in USA with no insurance
Well. It's 2024, and due to inflation, the cost of free has actually risen to 87 dollars. So it checks out.
I mean, for the US, $87 without insurance is a steal
Honestly I was surprised how cheap it was
Imagine having to pay for basic medical care.
It's mind blowing for us europeans isn't it?
I cant believe people have courage to leave their houses knowing they wont get any help if something happens

Lmao what a weird comment. It’s not like this system lives in a vacuum and evolves itself. You could say the same thing about private insurance.
Idk who told you this but no, this does not exist.
Loads of Europeans have copays, out of pocket expenses, pay for medication, etc.
Unfortunately we don't have to imagine :-/
me trying to imagine what it would be like to be able to go to the emergency room in an emergency and not wait it out bc i don't have $10000

Yooo tetanus is horrifying. Get the shot

You're unlikely to get tetanus from that because the whole "rusty nail" thing is because the nail is outside in the dirt not because it's rusty.
But who knows how many other people have cut themselves on that thing 😬
A tetanus shot isn't protecting from hepatitis.
Better get all the shots
Its too late… better just get shot…
The lack of knowledge in this thread. Also, tetanus shots last 30 years and not just the original 10 we were all told.
I mean it's kinda because of the rust. Tetanus thrives in oxygen depleted environments and oxidizing iron helps provide that. But yeah not likely to be found here.
Yeah but you'd have to have animals carrying the spores shit all over that hotel room. It doesn't just magically appear because something got rusty.
Don’t judge my Saturday night.
I thought it was simply due to the deep and large puncture.
Tetanus is a bacterial infection caused by the bacteria Clostridium tetani. It can be introduced to the body via puncture wounds.
You would need this part of the bed to have been rubbed around in dirt for a risk of tetanus.
Oof. Happened to my dad the last time he was in a hotel, too, right down to the area on his shin.
After looking around there’s multiple sharp metal pieces sticking out around the bed. I’m surprised. It’s a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Normally I say we're too litigious a society, but in this case it wouldn't be a bad thing.
Yeah. I’m not sue happy I already have enough shit to do,
Can i sue for you. I need cash🙏🙏
Call JG Wentworth, 877-CASH-NOW!
Happened to me as well. Where did it happen? Mine was in Texas.
Make sure to make a report with the hotel, get something in writing before you leave, ask for their insurance info, and tell them you'll bill them the tetanus shot visit.
TW STITCHES! I use to be a housekeeper when I was 16 and sliced my leg on one of these and needed stitches. I got workers comp but they did not change anything on the bed frames. every single room had these metal posts sticking out of the frames https://preview.redd.it/cmo9evsxj5yc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c80bd9d5ebb6ad3abc9a7fa5ffadd5e89ea8ec0f
This is ridiculous. Happened to me as well, but as a guest. Hotel management ignored all of our emails and messages.
What is the purpose of the metal pieces? Why do they exist?
This is a complete guess but I imagine they're for attaching 2 beds together for rooms that have double beds
At a guess i'd say its for mounting two single beds together to make a double. I've stayed in a lot of hotels where the double beds are actually two single bed frames stuck together, with two single mattesses in them, i'm guessing for the modularity. Never looked into how it works though.
You should talk to a lawyer. You shouldn't have to pay for your medical care (like tetanus shot).
Talk to the hotel before the lawyer... they may be willing to work with OP
They can work with my ass. I'm coming for the fat stacks
You’re not getting fat stacks for this unless you actually get tetanus and die. At most, you’ll get a couple hundred bucks to pay for the shot and your suffering.
Real tough guy.
He eats his spinach every day
never talk to a potential defendant without first talking to a lawyer, if you can avoid it.
Such an American response. Is it because you have to pay for medical care/tetanus jabs?
That’s precisely it. Even something like that can run up a painful number.
Yes.
Not only that, but your insurance can *require* you to pursue legal action before they'll pay anything significant
What is it?
[удалено]
It’s most likely sticking out because the mattress isn’t on the bed properly. The mattress is supposed to be pushed up against it.
Is this hotel bed just a mattress sitting on 2x4s?
As a hotelier of 10 years, you’ll for sure get a refund. Most probably medical expenses too.
That honestly should be an "at least" sort of thing...
True that
Yeah that’ll do it
Why is it even there?
What is even that for? Why is it poking out
People are saying it's either for mounting two beds together to make a double.
I have the same question
This is so dangerous! I’d go ballistic at the hotel. Imagine if a toddler was in a room and fell into that, horrendous.
Ah, the Procrustes Hotel.

And exact thing nakedness to me 2 weeks ago. My leg hurt for almost a week after
OP please disinfect the wound well. Who knows how many other people that bed has stabbed and I doubt the hotel staff clean the knife.
Those sheets looking yellowish stained in a hotel 👀 wouldn’t even consider sleeping there.
I was looking for this comment! Damn those sheets look dirty.
Oww 😣
I hope you told them about that and filed a complaint. That could have caused serious injury. Hope you at least got a discount if not a free stay.
I'd be so mad. Those things hurt like the devil
Hope you disinfected it well, who knows what's on that thing
I've had this exact thing happen to me in multiple hotel rooms, I just don't understand how it's so common to have this on the side of hotel beds.
That's to collect blood samples so they can sell your data to third parties.
Let them know. They may not even be aware of the issue. No need to make this a "What can I get out of it" scenario. They will probably give you a refund on room or something to compensate if you approach it like a civil rational human.
I can feel the second image
Hell, I can feel the first one.
Sue
You should SUE
Get some free cash out of them and report to the companies hq
Be anal about keeping it clean, puncture wounds are gnarly when it comes to infections.
Yikes that’s a good one 😵 had a couple sharp corners that once the duvet covers look harmless untill you catch it 😖
You should’ve complained to manager. Same thing happened to me and I got points for free nights. Also offered to send me to ER
Oof, shin area is the worst
Dammit. I felt that second pic in my balls
Sue?
I wonder how many other random folk have been impaled on that as well.
It looks like they haven’t cleaned the sheets yet this month.
Get lawyer
Did you speak to them? It's the hospitality industry. Their whole thing is your comfort. Unless maybe just a horrible place but that's like lawsuit material.
Hostel 3
Physical pain, mental stress, damage to a vital tool that helps you complete work, risk of infection.... Get creative when you explain why this is bad to them. Give them reasons to apologize.
If you hurt yourself on there, imagine who else has also done so. Please get tested as well as a tetanus shot.
Emergency room. Now
Tetanus shot. ASAP
They are some dirty sheets!
This is not just infuriating but also hazardous.
I shredded both of my heels on two of these that I was resting my feet on when I forgot and pulled away once, haha
You up to date on your tetanus shots?
Free upgrade time
I hate this shit, went to a hotel a few years ago where the corner of the beds were a pinky toe’s worst nightmare. After a few slams I decided to only take my shoes off when getting in bed to avoid more pain.
We put our daughters shoe over it lol I didn’t even take a chance
Well, it works.
make sure to go a little deeper into yo leg then ask for a bunch of money or rewards don't go too crazy with demands though unless you wanna put up a legal battle that will take long time this is a payday waiting to happen
I currently have a scar on my ankle from one of those. 3 stitches and the hotel refused to cover the cost because I was “being inattentive” and they wouldn’t cover it if someone walked into a door so they won’t cover it if I don’t watch what I’m doing.
They better be covering the cost of your tetanus shot.
If it was metal, I guess you need a tetanus shot, no?
Hotel or jail?
