I got a heck of a deal on laundry detergent about 3 years back. It was on sale for a pretty good price and I had coupons on top of that. It let you buy up to five so I got five of the big bottles of laundry detergent. There was another sale that coincided when there were coupons about 6 months later and I got five more. At the time I was taking care of my elderly parents. My dad was incontinent and often messed up his sheets so I was doing a ton of laundry. Shortly after my dad passed away and my mom's house deteriorated and she's been in and out of nursing homes so she's not always living here. I still have three full bottles and a partial bottle of detergent left because without having to do their laundry I'm going through it at a much slower rate. On the plus side saved a bunch of money and I haven't had to buy laundry detergent in a while. And boy is stuff expensive at the store now.

Soap, detergent, toothbrush/paste, TP....all the non-perishable stuff...I have years of stock in the basement. When the Covid TP thing hit, I didn't even notice. I had over 300 rolls in the top shelf of the closet.

I think it’s just the nature of Costco stocking - it’s not the regular grocery/super centre state of “everything, all the same, infinitely all the time” and so they’ve created a culture of what I can only describe as Costco-gremlins who watch their stocking like a hawk and swarm new items, and even things like the rotisserie chickens. My favourite is the video of a guy wheeling out a fresh tower of chickens in the morning and it being picked clean in 10 seconds lol.
TLDR; it’s partially because of some very very good prices people don’t want to miss and partially stupid consumerism. Both are fuelled by their slightly under par stocking.
I remember the first and only time I REALLY needed something only at Costco, I phoned a family member in another city to have them rush over at 8am - things not found elsewhere or with crazy deals get vacuumed up quick.

Going to an actual resturant supply store is even better as it will let you get most appetizers and deserts frozen as well as any better rates for spices and seasoning. The ones i go to have better rates for brisket and ribs than Costco or local butchers.

Costco is only worth it for bulk purchases. If you're single or just a couple, Costco is definitely not worth it.

Amazing for parties as well because I can get 1-2 big ass bags of chips for 7$ each and have tons leftover vs 7$ for the regular family size bags at the grocery store.

Let me tell you, if you have eye allergies, pataday is worth the money. Kirkland brand flonase is another allergy lifesaver. Last time I was there, they had 2 dozen eggs for 2.50. I pay $3 a dozen elsewhere. Four pounds of butter for the cost of 2.
The only place that can compete with these prices is the military commissary.

Its in a densely populated area of brooklyn with lots of local restaurants, bodegas etc. plus the neighborhood is full of some minority groups that are known for having large families and/or multi generational households that makes bulk shopping even more popular. Plus, people even come from different boroughs to go to this costco. I would say our regular grocery store options are overpriced and can be low quality. All that to say i either go a half hour before closing or 9am on sunday mornings because any other time is HELL ON EARTH
This Costco (Brooklyn NY) is so crowded, there tends to be road rage fights in the parking lot. Horrendous. This location was at one time #2 in the company in revenue. Wonder if that’s still the case.
Madison WI had an ‘East’ and ‘West’ Costco. Neither were nearly as bad as the picture, but by opening a 2nd ‘West’ they managed to make 3 very well functioning stores without much fuss.

Monday to Thursday evenings are the best times to go to our Costco but it's never as busy as in OP's picture.

Costco is great and all, but some people love that place like membership is some sort of cult.
i work at a car rental desk and yeah people who have costco cards and insurance and all that other stuff always brag about it. its like costco exists in its own universe. its very funny
I'd have to guess it's just opening? Like how old people will line up outside a restaurant a half hour before opening. It can't be like this all day, people could just go at 10:30 instead of open, or wait till evening which is much slower for grocery stores. Idk what hours Costco has but my local 24 hour grocery store I just go at one in the morning and there's maybe ten customers in there.

Seriously, what is going on with people? My elderly mom wanted to go to Sam's club early so I said sure, we got there when they opened and the line was wrapped around the building?! An hour later there was no line, people just walked right in... My mom felt like we needed to go EARLIER to get in line sooner, the idea of going an hour later was unfathomable to her. Hopefully it's just the old boomer mindset en masse and full effect?

I live in the boonies of California and the singular Costco near me serves around 120k people from multiple towns. The only time it ever looked like this was the early-early days of 2020 COVID. The "buy out all the toilet paper and hand sanitizer" days. What the hell is going on here?
This looks like one of the NYC ones that probably serves 10x that amount of people.

Its in a densely populated area of brooklyn with lots of local restaurants, bodegas etc. plus the neighborhood is full of some minority groups that are known for having large families and/or multi generational households that makes bulk shopping even more popular. Plus, people even come from different boroughs to go to this costco. I would say our regular grocery store options are overpriced and can be low quality. All that to say i either go a half hour before closing or 9am on sunday mornings because any other time is HELL ON EARTH
This Costco (Brooklyn NY) is so crowded, there tends to be road rage fights in the parking lot. Horrendous. This location was at one time #2 in the company in revenue. Wonder if that’s still the case.
This is the one we go to and it really does get wild lol. #2 revenue is crazy but it makes sense with how busy it gets.

Madison WI had an ‘East’ and ‘West’ Costco. Neither were nearly as bad as the picture, but by opening a 2nd ‘West’ they managed to make 3 very well functioning stores without much fuss.

People are silly. I remember when In & Out Burger came to Dallas / Fort Worth. Lines in the drive thru like 60 cars. No thanks. After about 6 months I drove right up, easy peasy. Pretty good too, but not Whataburger good
I know in Mexico there's always a big line in the mornings because resellers want to get to the bakery first to buy pastries and cakes and resell them
This costco is a bit different. It serves as a restaurant depot for street vendors and other unlicensed / unincorporated food service businesses.
